Irvin Rigney
DANVILLE, Va. - Irvin James Rigney, 89, of 149 Sunset Drive, died Thursday, Oct. 21, 1999, at Danville Regional Medical Center after a brief illness.
Born Feb. 23, 1910, in Danville, he was the son of William R. Rigney and Sarah Jefferson Rigney.
He married
Aug. 15, 1942, to Mabel Todd Rigney, who survives.
He lived his life in Danville. He owned and operated W.R. Rigney Shoe Shop for over 40 years prior to his retirement. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Danville.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include one son, Daryl Rigney of Danville; one brother, Robert L. Rigney of Danville; one sister, Mary R. Baker of Danville; an two step-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by one brother, William Thomas Rigney; and two sisters, Lily R. Smith and Catherine R. Bailey.
A funeral will be 2 p.m. Monday at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel with the Rev. Joey Faucette officiating. Interment
will be in Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends 7:30-8:30 p.m. Sunday at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel and at other times at the residence.

Georgia Smith
DANVILLE, Va. - Georgia Odessa May Smith, 86, of 12 Still St., died late Thursday, Oct 21, 1999, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Feb. 6, 1913, in Guilford County, N.C., she was the daughter of Cyrus Ruffin May and Elsie Barker May.
She was married
to Denver Smith, who predeceased her.
She was of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include five sisters, Nellie Marshall, Minnie Bond, Vella Marshall, Pearl Perrow, and Dorothy Saul, all of Danville.
She was predeceased by one sister, Lucille Cooper.
A graveside service will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Schoolfield cemetery with the Rev. Jack Robertson officiating.
The family will receive friends at the residence.

William Terry
LAKE WALES, Fla. - William Harper Terry, 90, formerly of Pittsylvania County, died Friday, Oct. 22, 1999, at his residence in Florida.
Born April 23, 1909, in Pittsylvania County, Virginia, he was the son of Moses Lee Terry and Alice Hodnett Terry.
He was a member of Waverly Baptist Church in Lake Wales. Prior to his retirement he was employed by Klopman Mills.
He was married
to Virginia Callahan Terry, who survives.
In addition to his wife of Lake Wales, survivors include two sons, Harold V. Terry of Dundee and Frank E. Terry of Chatham, Va.; one daughter, Rachael T. Mitchell of Chatham, Va.; and one sister, Mary T. Harrington of Burlington, N.C.
A funeral will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday at Chestnut Level Baptist Church in Pittsylvania County, Virginia with the Rev. Julian Griffin, the Rev. R. Fletcher Hardy III and the Rev. F.P. 'Rusty' Mullins officiating. Interment
will be in Highland Burial Park.

J. Leland Williams
BLAIRS, Va. - James Leland Williams, 80, of 8001 Old Richmond Road, died Friday, Oct. 22, 1999, at his residence.
Born Dec. 28, 1918, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of James Floyd Williams and Mattie Butcher Williams.
Mr. Williams was a well-known farmer, insurance adjuster and worked at Virginia-Carolina, Produce and Piedmont warehouses for a number of years.
Mr. Williams was a former president of the Pittsylvania County Farm Bureau, served on the Pittsylvania County School Board and the School board Selection Commission from 1975 to 1991.
He was an Army veteran of World War II and was discharged as a pilot with the rank of first lieutenant. He was a graduate of Dan River High School and Roanoke Business College.
He was of the Primitive Baptist faith and attended Malmaison Primitive Baptist Church.
He was married
to Audrey Farmer Williams, who survives, Feb. 19, 1949.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include one son, David A Williams of Blairs; one daughter, Bonnie W. Moshenek of Ringgold; four brothers, Julian R. Williams of Keeling, Burnell B. Williams of Blairs, F. Wendall Williams of Athens, Ga. and Garland B. Williams of South Boston; two sisters, Thelma W. Hunt of Danville and Naomi W. Hunt of Keeling; four grandchildren, Nathan Moshenek of Danville, Richard Moshenek of Raleigh, N.C., and Stacey Williams and Katherine Williams, both of Danville.
He was predeceased by one brother, John Elwood Williams.
A funeral will be held 11 a.m. Monday at Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel with Elder Julian R. Williams, Elder C.B. Davis and Elder Kenneth R. Key officiating. Interment
will be in Highland Burial Park.

Lena Wright
DANVILLE, Va. - Lena Dickens Wright, 90, of 42 Fairfield Ave., died Thursday, Oct 14, 1999, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born April 16, 1909, in Wythe County, she was the daughter of Cornelius Neal Dickens and Jettie Vaughn Dickens.
She lived most of her life in Danville and was retired from Dan River Inc., where she worked in the spinning room.
She became semi-disabled and her daughter-in-law cared for her for many years.
She was married
to Benjamin F. Wright, who predeceased her.
Survivors include two brothers, Ernest "Luke" Dickens and Charles Walter "Jack" Dickens, both of Danville; three grandchildren; three great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
In addition to her husband she was predeceased by one son, Joel E. Wright, four sisters and four brothers.
A funeral was held Saturday, Oct. 16, at Swicegood Funeral Home with the Rev. Neal Isom officiating. Burial was in Schoolfield cemetery.
Matthew Bane
JAVA, Va. - Matthew Aylor Bane, 88, of 16056 Halifax Road, died Saturday Oct. 23, 1999, at Woodview Nursing Home.
Born July 4, 1911, in Halifax County, he was the son of Matthew Thomas Bane and Lula Miller Bane.
He was married
to Rena Marie Toombs Bane.
He was a member of the Country Line Baptist Church.
Survivors include one daughter, Jean B. Shapard of Nathalie.

William Barker
RINGGOLD, Va. - William Alvis Barker, 94, formerly of Ringgold, died Sunday, Oct. 24, 1999, at Roman Eagle Memorial Home, where he had resided for six years.
Born Sept. 18, 1905, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of Moses C. Barker and Annie Butcher Barker.
He lived his entire life in the Ringgold community, and before retiring, he was a teacher in the Pittsylvania County School System for 32 years. He taught many years at Dan River High School.
He was a member of Kentuck Baptist Church where he served as a deacon, a Sunday school teacher and a member of the choir. He was a member of Dan River Ruritan Club.
He was married
to Annie Davis Barker Dec. 20, 1930, who predeceased him June 22, 1980.
Survivors include one daughter, Carolyn Anne Raunswinder of Alexandria; two sons, John Wesley Barker of Ringgold and William Reid Barker of Danville; one brother, J. Howe Barker of Danville; one sister, Mildred B. Starkey of Danville; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
In addition to his wife he was predeceased by a brother, Edwin C. Barker and a sister, Louise B. Bennett.
A funeral will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday at Kentuck Baptist Church with the Rev. David Henry, the Rev. Carl Burger and the Rev. Jesse Lane officiating. Interment
will be in Highland Burial Park.

Shirley Hale
JONESBOROUGH, Tenn. - Shirley Jean Warren Hale, 64, of 196 Bayless Road, died Saturday, Oct. 23, 1999, at her residence.
Born in Rossville, Ga., she was the daughter of Claude Warren, who survives and the late Frances Via Warren.
She was married
to Nathan S. Hale.
A resident of Washington County since 1955, she was a retired school teacher in the Washington County School System, having taught primarily at Sulphur Springs Middle School. She was the 1991 recipient of the Washington County Teacher of the Year award.
She attended Mary Washington College in Fredricksburg, Va., and was a 1970 Cum Laude graduate of East Tennessee State University.
She was a member of the National Council of Teachers of English, Republican Executive Committee and former member of the Junior Service League.
She was a member of Sulphur Springs Baptist Church.
In addition to her father of Johnson City and her husband of the residence, survivors include one daughter, Melony Johnson of Knoxville; two sons, N. Scott Hale of Nashville and Warren C. Hale of Jonesborough; one sister; and seven grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held 7 p.m. Friday in the gymnasium of Sulphur Springs School.
A private graveside service will be held at Mountain Home National cemetery at a later time with the Rev. Vic Wallace officiating.

Jeanne Snead
BLAIRS, Va. - Jeanne Durkin Snead, 79, of 6020 Spring Garden Road, died Saturday, Oct. 23, 1999, at her residence.
Born Oct. 17, 1920, in San Francisco, Snead was a daughter of Elmer A. and Florence Richardson Jenkins. She was married
Oct. 1, 1944 to William Davis Snead Sr., who died Aug. 20, 1993.
She lived in Greensboro, N.C., before moving to Blairs in 1993. She was retired from the AT&T Federal Credit Union. She was of the Presbyterian faith.
She is survived by a son, William Davis Snead Jr. of Richmond; a daughter, Patricia S. Freeman of Randleman, N.C.; a brother, Elmer A. Jenkins Jr. of San Francisco; four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
A graveside service will take place 11 a.m. Tuesday at Highland Burial Park.

DANVILLE, Va. - Vicky Turner Taylor, 52, of 123 Jerry Drive, died Saturday, Oct. 23, 1999, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born June 10, 1947, in Danville, she was the daughter of Carl Turner and Mary Lou Sasser McNeill.
She was married
to John O. Taylor, who survives.
She was of the Baptist faith.
In addition to her husband of the residence, she is survived by two daughters, Jacqueline Taylor Payne of Yanceyville, N.C., and Donna Taylor Barley of Danville; two sons, John O. Taylor Jr. and Kelly Dean Turner, both of Danville; one sister, Geraldine Harris of Danville; one brother, Steve McNeill of Greensboro, N.C.; and six grandchildren.
She was predeceased by one brother, Jack Sylvestrie.
