Clifton Thompson
SUTHERLIN, Va. - Wesley Clifton Thompson, 87, of 1202 Hackberry Road, died Sunday, Oct. 24, 1999, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born July 2, 1912, in Charlotte County Courthouse, he was the son of Henry and Mattie Thompson. He was married
to Mattie C. Thompson, who survives. He was a lifelong member of Sandycreek Baptist Church, where he served as deacon and was a member of the Adult Men's Sunday School Class.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include two sons, Randy L. Thomspon of Kernersville, N.C., and Bobby L. Thompson of Virginia Beach; three sisters, Eldora T. Wallace of Keysville, Vernell Scearce and Margaret Thompson, both of Danville; four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
A funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday at Townes Memorial Chapel, with the Rev. H. Dale Proctor officiating. Interment
will follow at Danville Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday at Townes Funeral Home, and at other times at the residence.
J. Leland Williams
BLAIRS, Va. - James Leland Williams, 80, of 8001 Old Richmond Road, died Friday, Oct. 22, 1999, at his residence.
Born Dec. 28, 1918, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of James Floyd Williams and Mattie Butcher Williams.
Mr. Williams was a well-known farmer, insurance adjuster and worked at Virginia-Carolina, Producers and Piedmont warehouses for a number of years.
Mr. Williams was a former president of the Pittsylvania County Farm Bureau, served on the Pittsylvania County School Board and the School board Selection Commission from 1975 to 1991.
He was an Army veteran of World War II and was discharged as a pilot with the rank of first lieutenant. He was a graduate of Dan River High School and Roanoke Business College.
He was of the Primitive Baptist faith and attended Malmaison Primitive Baptist Church.
He was married
to Audrey Farmer Williams, who survives, Feb. 19, 1949.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include one son, David A Williams of Blairs; one daughter, Bonnie W. Moshenek of Ringgold; four brothers, Julian R. Williams of Keeling, Burnell B. Williams of Blairs, F. Wendell Williams of Athens, Ga. and Garland B. Williams of South Boston; two sisters, Thelma W. Hunt of Danville and Naomi W. Houser of Keeling; four grandchildren, Nathan Moshenek of Danville, Richard Moshenek of Raleigh, N.C., and Stacey Williams and Katherine Williams, both of Danville.
He was predeceased by one brother, John Elwood Williams.
A funeral will be held 11 a.m. Monday at Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel with Elder Julian R. Williams, Elder C.B. Davis and Elder Kenneth R. Key officiating. Interment
will be in Highland Burial Park.

Lorraine Clarke
DANVILLE, Va. - Lorraine Arey Clarke, 93, formerly of 241 Lady Astor Place, died 2:25 a.m. Monday, Oct. 25, 1999, at Riverside Health Care Center.
Born July 11, 1906, in Salisbury, N.C., she was the daughter of Ernest C. Arey and Martha Rose Fink Arey.
She was married
Nov. 1923, to Reginald G. "Brick" Clarke, who predeceased her.
She resided in Danville since childhood.
Survivors include one brother Dr. D. L. Arey of Danville; two grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by one daughter Nancy Clarke Suttle; and one sister Margaret A. Swicegood.
A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m., Wednesday at Highland Burial Park with the Rev. Jack Heinsohn officiating.

Alberta Davis
CHATHAM, Va. - Alberta Wimbush Price Davis, 83, of 1792 Concord Road, died Sunday morning, Oct. 24, 1999, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born July 12, 1916, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Matthew Wimbush and Mary Miner Wimbush.
She first married
Coil Warren Price who predeceased her and later to Elder Lloyd Davis, who also predeceased her.
Prior to her retirement, she was a nurse's assistant at Roman Eagle and Oak Grove Lodge. She was a member of Faith Hope Tabernacle Holy Church, in Gretna where she was mother of the church.
Survivors include six daughters Mary Burton of Silver Springs, Md., Elizabeth Shelton of Lamdham, Md., Virginia Coussa of Burtonsville, Md., Beatrice Carter of Smyrna, Del., Patricia Taylor of Danville, and Alberta "Freda" Hollis of Bear, Del.; four sons David Lee Price, Curtis Price and Clifton Price, all of Chatham, and Edward Price of Los Angeles, Calif.; three sisters Mary Steele of Brooklyn, N.Y., Corrine Moore and Alice Rebecca Chaney, both of Chatham; two step-daughters Mary Jennings of Gretna, Va., and Tinnie Dixon of Washington, D.C.; eight step-sons James S. Davis, George S. Davis, Larry L. Davis, Rev. Toise L. Davis, Joe E. Davis and Bobby S. Davis, all of Gretna, Lloyd S. Davis and Ralph H. Davis, both of Hurt, Va; 30 grandchildren, 31 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild, and a host of step-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren.
In addition to her husbands, she was predeceased by one son James Henry Price; two sisters Mamie Robinson and Elnora Freeman; three brothers Roy Wimbush, Lindsey Wimbush and Clarence Wimbush; and one grandson James Henry Price, Jr.
A funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday at First United Holiness Church with the Elder Ivanhoe Duncan officiating. Burial will be in Price Family cemetery.
The family will receive friends 7-8 p.m. Tuesday at Miller Funeral Home and at other times at the residence.
A. Linwood Lindsey
A. Linwood Lindsey, age 73, of 440 Maple Lane, died Monday afternoon, October 25, 1999, at his residence after a decline in health for the past six months.
He was born on September 22, 1926, in Ringgold, Va., a son of George Lindsey and Lottie Shelton Lindsey.
He attended the University of Virginia and was associated with First Virginia Bank for a number of years and retired in 1989, as Vice President.
He was a member of the Ascension Lutheran Church and was a former member of the Danville City Council.
He was married
to the former Dorothy Jones on April 1, 1972, who survives at the home.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by two daughters, Nancy L. Burris of Fayetteville, Arkansas and Roslyn A. Robinson of Raleigh, N.C., three grandchildren, J.A. Crumpler, III of Raleigh, Morgan Crumpler of Raleigh, and Samuel Burris of Fayetteville, Arkansas, a brother, Curtis Lindsey of Charlotte, N.C.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, October 27, 1999, at 11:00 a.m. from the Ascension Lutheran Church by Pastor Caldwell Day. Private burial will follow.

Bessie Oliver
RIDGEWAY, Va. - Bessie B. Oliver, of 28 Elam Drive, died at 10:55 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 23, 1999, at Memorial Hospital of Martinsville Henry County.
Born in Danville, she was the daughter of Charlie Morris and Annie Lokermy.
She is survived by her husband, Henry Oliver.
She was employed for 35 years at Dan River Inc.
In addition to her husband, survivors include one daughter, Mrs. Jackie Shirley Morton of Axton, Va.; four sons Michael Bowens of Wilmington, N.C., Carlton Bowens and Jimmy Bowens, both of Roxboro, N.C., and Eugene Bowens, of Burlington, N.C.; 16 grandchiildren and 24 great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by three sisters Edna Corbin, Bonnie Morris and Mary Apple; and one brother John Morris.
A funeral will be held at 2 p.m., Tuesday at Community Funeral Services Chapel with the Rev. Marvin Suit and the Rev. Bruce Hagy officiating. Burial will be in Mountain View cemetery.
Rachel Parrish
HAMPTON, Va. - Rachel W. Parrish, 86, died Sunday, Oct. 24, 1999.
Born in North Carolina, she was a resident of Hampton for 59 years.
She was married
to Harry Bruce Parrish, who predeceased her.
She was a cafeteria worker for the Hampton school system and retired in 1975, after 15 years of service.
Survivors include two daughters, Ann Glenn of Hampton and Carol P. Smith of Vinton, Va.; and one sister, Mamie Tilley of Danville, Va.
A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m., Wednesday at Peninsula Memorial Park with the Rev. Lawrence Biermann officiating. Burial will be in Peninsula Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m., Tuesday at Riverside Funeral Home.
Herbert Peace, Jr.
DANVILLE, Va. - Herbert Lee Peace, Jr., 78, of 415 Williamson Road, died Monday morning, Oct. 25, 1999, at his residence of declining health since 1993.
Born Aug. 18, 1921, in Randleman, N.C., he was the son of Herbert Lee Peace, Sr. and Teansy Harvell Peace.
He married
Elizabeth Lemly Peace, who survives.
He was a veteran of the United States Army, serving during World War II. He lived in the Danville area most of his life and was a self-employed carpenter. He was in and out of the hospital a number of times and was of the Baptist faith.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include two daughters Cynthia Peace Wade of Danville and Mary Peace Hughes of Ringgold; one sister Jessie P. Bailey of Danville; and four grandchildren.
A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m., Wednesday at Floral Hills Memory Gardens with the Rev. Daryl Joyce officiating. Full military honors will be conducted by the American Legion Post No. 325 honor guards.
The family will receive friends at the residence of his daughter, Mary Hughes, 120 Cedar Lane, Ringgold, and at other times at the residence.

GRETNA, Va. - Raymond R. Carter, 65, of 9420 Rockford School Road, died Monday morning, Oct. 25, 1999, at Beverly Hill Health Care in Martinsville.
Born Feb. 4, 1934, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of James Stone and Pearl E. Lovelace Carter Stone. He was the step-son of Katherine Stone, who survives.
He married
Flossie Carter, who survives.
He was a retired employee of Lane Company and a member of the Pleasant Grove Baptist Church.
In addition to his wife of the residence, and step-mother of Renan, Va., survivors include four daughters, Carolyn J. Miller and Susan Carter, both of the residence, Tammy G. Carter of Gretna and Jeanette Carter of Altavista; eight brothers, Clyde Carter, Caudie Stone, Taft Stone, George Stone and John Stone, all of Gretna, Darfuss Carter of Lynch Station, Dave Carter of Trenton, N.J., and Shirley Stone of Hurt; 11 sisters Mary Liza Stone, Pearl Baker, Patricia Farmer, all of Danville, Ernestine Scott of Evington, Sarah Hubbard of Red House, Pauline West of Rustburg, Dorothy Davis and Corene Rosser of Long Island, Beatrice Farmer and Goldie Stone, both of Gretna and Virginia Hall of Long Island; eight grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
A funeral will be 1 p.m. Thursday at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church with the Rev. Nathaniel Jones officiating. Burial will be in church cemetery.
