Westley Dickerson Sr.
DANVILLE, Va. - Westley Hughes Dickerson Sr., 74, of 204 Cunningham St., died Monday, Oct. 25, 1999, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Feb. 22, 1925, in Danville, he was the son of William Dickerson and Nannie Waller Dickerson.
He was a veteran of the United States Army and was employed at the Pentagon, Washington, for many years prior to his retirement.
Survivors include two daughters, Patricia Tolliver of Glenarden, Md., and Michele Jeter of Silver Springs, Md.; one son, Westley Dickerson Jr., of Dale City; three sisters, Dessie Dickerson, Velma Lindsey and Frances Walton, all of Danville; seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
A funeral will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Guildfield Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. Harold Vann officiating. Interment
will be in Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends at the residence.

Clarence Duffer
SOUTH BOSTON, Va. - Clarence Edward Duffer, 79, of 1185 Ponderosa Road, died Monday, Oct. 25, 1999, at Halifax Regional Hospital.
Born Nov. 23, 1919, in Charlotte County, he was the son of Sam Paul Duffer and Gracie Duffey Duffer.
He married
Irene Dunaway Duffer, who survives.
He attended the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses and was employed at Rochester Button Company. He served in the United States Army during World War II.
In addition to his wife of South Boston, survivors include two sons, Wayne A. Duffer and C. Aubrey Duffer, both of South Boston; one daughter, Shirley D. McCormick of South Boston; two brothers, Sam Duffer and Paul Duffer, both of South Boston; one sister, Audrey D. McCormick of South Boston; six grandchildren, one step-grandchild and five great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by one brother, Sonny Duffer; one sister, Ruby D. Wallace; and one grandchild.
A funeral will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Brooks Funeral Home Chapel with Tom Giglio officiating. Burial will be in Oak Ridge cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the residence.
James Dunavant
HALIFAX, Va. - James Easley Dunavant, 63, of 425 Mountain Road, died Monday, Oct. 25, 1999, at Halifax Regional Hospital.
Born Sept. 25, 1936, in Halifax, he was the son of Samuel Jackson Dunavant and Bertha Easley Finney.
He married
Helen McMann Dunavant, who survives.
He was a member of St. John's Episcopal Church.
In addition to his wife of Halifax, survivors include two daughters, Robin Harris of Myrtle Beach, S.C., and Helen Wadino of Richmond; one son, James Easley "Jed" Dunavant Jr., of Columbia, S.C.; one brother, Samuel Jackson "Jack" Dunavant Jr., of Halifax; and two grandchildren.
A funeral will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at St. John's Episcopal Church with the Rev. Dewitt Loomis officiating. Burial will be in church cemetery.
Herman Jones
DANVILLE, Va. - Herman Gold Jones, 80, of 144 Martin Ave., formerly of 264 Park Circle, died 4:45 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 26, 1999, at his residence after one year of declining health.
Born July 19, 1919, in Schoolfield, he was the son of Grover W. Jones and Nannie Stuart Jones.
He married
Nancy Yates Jones, who predeceased him.
He lived most of his life in Danville and worked in 4B weave at Dan River Inc. He was a member of Fariview United Methodist Church. He served in the United States Marine Corps during World War II and was a lifetime member of Veterans of Foreign War Post No. 647, a member of the American Legion Post No. 1097, and the Schoolfield Friend's Club.
Survivors include two daughters, Pamela R. Bandy and Emily Claire Jones, both of Danville; one brother, Grover W. Jones of Danville; one sister, Dorothy May Berry of Hertford, N.C.; and three grandchildren.
A graveside service will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Danville Memorial Gardens with the Rev. O.H. Burton Jr. officiating with full military honors will be conducted by the American Legion Post No. 1097 honor guard.
The family will receive friends at the residence.

A. Linwood Lindsey
A. Linwood Lindsey, age 73, of 440 Maple Lane, died Monday afternoon, October 25, 1999, at his residence after a decline in health for the past six months.
He was born on September 22, 1926, in Ringgold, Va., a son of George Lindsey and Lottie Shelton Lindsey.
He attended the University of Virginia and was associated with First Virginia Bank for a number of years and retired in 1989, as Vice President.
He was a member of the Ascension Lutheran Church and was a former member of the Danville City Council.
He was married
to the former Dorothy Jones on April 1, 1972, who survives at the home.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by two daughters, Nancy L. Burris of Fayetteville, Arkansas and Roslyn A. Robinson of Raleigh, N.C., three grandchildren, J.A. Crumpler, III of Raleigh, Morgan Crumpler of Raleigh, and Samuel Burris of Fayetteville, Arkansas, a brother, Curtis Lindsey of Charlotte, N.C.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, October 27, 1999, at 11:00 a.m. from the Ascension Lutheran Church by Pastor Caldwell Day. Private burial will follow.

Mabel Frances Motley
Mabel Frances Motley, 79, of Roanoke, died Monday, Oct. 25, 1999.
A native of Danville, she was a lifetime Roanoke resident. She was retired from the Virginia Rehabilitative Services as a secretary after many years of service.
She was a member of the Baptist Church and a U.S. Navy World War II veteran.
She is survived by her two brothers: Julian and Garland Motley of Danville; and two sisters, Louise Cochran and Edith Dalton of Danville.
Graveside services will be held 2 p.m. Thursday, Oct 28, 1999, at Schoolfield cemetery with the Rev. William Blalock officiating. Arrangements by Oakey Funeral Service, Roanoke.
Harry William Pattisall
Harry W. Pattisall, 66 of 209 Whittle Street, Chatham, Virginia died Tuesday, October 26, at his residence.
Born February 24, 1933, in Danville, Virginia, he was the son of the late W. Harlan Pattisall and Ruby Cook Pattisall. He lived in Fitchburg, Massachusetts with his aunt and uncle, the late Mary and Joseph Grossman, until 1950. He attended Virginia Polytechnic Institute and served in the U.S. Air Force prior to obtaining his Bachelor's degree from Fitchburg State Teachers College in 1959. He moved to Danville in 1960, and began a 30-year teaching career with the Danville Public School System, retiring in 1990. He received his Master's degree from Virginia Tech in 1980. He was also a major in the Air Force Reserves.
He was married
on January 12, 1957, to Doris Stone Pattisall, who survives.
He was a member of Christ The King Lutheran Church and served on the Board of Directors of The Learning Center. He was a volunteer for the American Cancer Society and The Pittsylvania County Literacy Program. He had a special interest in the preservation and restoration of historic houses.
He is lovingly remembered by his wife, Doris; his children, Michael Pattisall and wife Ellen of Alexandria, Va., Melanie Flores and husband Joe of Pensacola, Fla., Kimberly Shore and husband Chris of Lexington, N.C.; his seven grandchildren, Clay, Brittney, Jessica and Jonathan Farthing, Tess Flores, Cameron and Caileigh Pattisall; his sister, Ann P. Wrenn of Lynchburg, Va., and his brother, Tom Pattisall of Alexandria, Va.
He was predeceased by a sister, Carolyn McDaniel of Rustburg, Va., and a brother, Dick Pattisall of Greensboro, N.C.
A funeral service will be held on Thursday, October 28, at 2:00 p.m. at Christ The King Lutheran Church, Danville, Va., by the Rev. Jim Kleinfelter. Interment
will be in the Mountain View cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday at Scott Funeral Home in Chatham and other times at the residence.
Herbert Peace, Jr.
DANVILLE, Va.- Herbert Lee Peace, Jr., 78, of 415 Williamson Road, died Monday morning, Oct. 25, 1999, at his residence of declining health since 1993.
Born Aug. 18, 1921, in Randleman, N.C., he was the son of Herbert Lee Peace, Sr. and Teansy Harvell Peace.
He married
Elizabeth Lemly Peace, who survives.
He was a veteran of the United States Army, serving during World War II. He lived in the Danville area most of his life and was a self-employed carpenter. He was in and out of the hospital a number of times and was of the Baptist faith.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include two daughters Cynthia Peace Wade of Danville and Mary Peace Hughes of Ringgold; one sister Jessie P. Bailey of Danville; and four grandchildren.
A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m., Wednesday at Floral Hills Memory Gardens with the Rev. Daryl Joyce officiating. Full military honors will be conducted by the American Legion Post No. 325 honor guards.
The family will receive friends at the residence of his daughter, Mary Hughes, 120 Cedar Lane, Ringgold, and at other times at the residence.

Arthur Pinchback Jr.
DANVILLE, Va. - Arthur Pinchback Jr., 74, of 215 Ross St., died Sunday, Oct. 24, 1999, at Veterans Administration Hospital, Salem.
Born July 25, 1925, in Danville, he was the son of Arthur Pinchback Sr. and the late Ella Bowe Pinchback.
He was married
to Nannie Louise Hundley Pinchback, who survives.
Prior to his retirement, he was employed at Lorillard Tobacco Company for over 40 years. He was a veteran of the United States Army and a member of Calvary Baptist Church.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include two daughters, Margaret A. Pinchback of the residence, and Brenda Fitz of Greensboro, N.C.; three sons, John D. Pinchback and Larry Pinchback, both of Danville, George E. Pinchback of Pittsburgh, Pa.; two sisters, Ann Gregory of Inkster, Mich., Nannie Hughes of St. Albans, N.Y.
A funeral will be 1 p.m. Thursday at Calvary Baptist Church with the Rev. Serenus Churn officiating. Burial with military rites will be conducted by the Martinsville Henry County Honor guard in Highland Burial Park.

Dollie Rich
DANVILLE, VA. - Dollie F. Rich, 92, formerly of 457 Pine Lake Road, died on Monday, October 25, 1999, in Danville Regional Medical Center for the past six days of three years of declining health.
Born July 10, 1907, in Concord, N.C., she was the daughter of Charles F. Faggart and Laura Krimmingery Faggart.
She was married
on May 12, 1925, to James Arch Rich, Sr., who died July 10, 1985.
Mrs. Rich was the last survivor of her immediate family. She lived most of her life in Pittsylvania County where she was a homemaker. Mrs. Rich was was a member of Calvary Baptist Church on Edgewood Drive where she also served as the church pianist and organist. She had also served as pianist and organist for a number of area churches.
Survivors include one son and daughter-in-law, James Arch Rich, Jr. and Dollie M. Rich, both of Danville; two grandsons, James A. Rich, III and Wade V. Rich, both of Danville; two granddaughters Debbie R. Smoake and Laurie R. Taylor, both of Danville; eight great grandchildren.
A funeral will be held at 11 a.m., Wednesday, October 27, 1999, at Wrenn Yeatts Westover Chapel with the Reverend Rick Markham and the Reverend William C. Blalock officiating. Interment
will be in Danville Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Tuesday at Wrenn Yeatts Westover Chapel and at other times at the residence of her son James and Dollie Rich, 453 Pine Lake Road, off of Route 58 West.
Ralph Hedrick
DANVILLE, Va. - Ralph "Ras" Hedrick, 94, of 211 Mimosa St., died 3:30 a.m., Wednesday, Oct. 27, 1999, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Feb. 15, 1905, in Chatham, he was the son of John Hedrick and Nannie Yeatts Hedrick.
He married
Nannie Matherly Hedrick, who predeceased him.
He lived in Danville for 65 years where he worked for 36 years in the weave room at Dan River Inc. He later became a security guard at a community college. He was a member of Westover Church of God.
Survivors include one daughter, Helen Marie Gatley of Danville; two sons, Billy Hedrick of Danville and James Hedrick of Hurdle Mills; one sister, Lila Adkins of Danville; one brother, Jack Hedrick of Callands; four half-brothers, Grover Hedrick of Lynchburg, Morgan Hedrick, Adele Hedrick, and Rosser Hedrick, all of Rustburg, Va.; one half-sister, Betty Childress of Patterson, N.J.; nine grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren.
A funeral will be 11 a.m. Friday at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. John Meadows and the Rev. Griffin Duncan officiating. Burial will be in Danville Memorial Gardens.
