Virginia, U.S., Marriage Records, 1936-2014

Lelia Adkins

DANVILLE, Va. - Lelia Hedrick Adkins, 92, of 1464 Blair Loop Road, died early Tuesday morning, Nov. 2, 1999, at Danville Regional Medical Center after 10 years of declining health.

Born Feb. 17, 1907, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of John Hedrick and Nannie Yeatts Hedrick.

She married Wade Adkins, who predeceased her Oct. 9, 1964.

She spent most of her life in Danville where she was a homemaker and a member of Westover Baptist Church.

Survivors include one son, Paul W. Adkins of Chatham; one daughter Remona Clendenen of Greenville, N.C.; one brother, Jack Hedrick of Callands; one half-sister, Betty Childress of Patterson, N.J.; four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

A funeral will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Dr. Doug Barber and Rev. Robert Vermillion officiating. Burial will be in Greenbay Christian Church cemetery in Pittsylvania County.

The family will receive friends at the residence.

Gladys Hopkins

BUFFALO, N.Y. - Gladys P. Hopkins, 81, died Friday, Oct. 29, 1999 in Buffalo, N.Y.

Born Jan. 25, 1918 in Pittsylvania County, Va., she was the daughter of Will A. Perkins and Dailey Jefferson.

She worked as a health care professional. She was member of Guildfield Baptist Church in Danville, Va., and St. John Baptist Church in Buffalo.

She is survived by three brothers, Thomas G. Perkins, Bernard C. Perkins and Leroy L. Perkins, all of Washington; and six sisters, Roberta P. Carter, Annie Mae Clark and Lovelyn Thompson, all of Danville, Va.; Obelia P. Fitzgerald of Chatham, Va., Geneva P. Dickerson of Silver Springs, Md., and Inez P. Foster of Martinsville, Va.

The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Guildfield Baptist Church with the Rev. Harold E. Vann II and Rev. Clayton Poole officiating. Interment icon will follow in Highland Burial Park.

The family is residing at the home of Anne Mae Clark, Route 746, Danville.

Cunningham & Hughes is in charge of local arrangements.

Cleveland Meadows

DANVILLE, Va. - Cleveland "Cleve" Meadows, 80, of 437 Williamson Road died early Wednesday, Nov. 3, 1999 at Duke University Medical Center in Durham, N.C., after declining health since September.

Born Oct. 13, 1919 in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of Grover Cleveland Meadows and Virgie Davis Meadows.

He was married to Mary Bowman Meadows who survives him.

Meadows was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force serving during World War II. Meadows spent most of his life in the Danville and Pittsylvania County area. He operated Cleveland's Citgo until his retirement and was of the Holiness faith.

In addition to the wife of the residence, survivors include one son, Leon Meadows of Keeling and one daughter, Carol Meadows Elliott of Lincolnton, N.C., and two sisters, Christine Taylor of Rocky Mount, and Irene Robertson of Gretna and six grandchildren and four great grandchildren.

The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Dr. Doug Barber and Rev. Robert Vermillion officiating. Interment icon will follow at Highland Burial Park.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 7 to 8:30 p.m. and other times at the residence.

Laura Ann Williamson

DANVILLE, Va. - Laura Ann Youngblood Williamson, age 96, of 372 Norwood Drive died Wednesday, November 3, 1999 in her residence.

She was born September 4, 1903, in Rock Hill, S.C., she was the daughter of Rev. Walter Williamson and Bessie Youngblood.

She was predeceased by her husband, Harry, one son, Frank and one sister and four brothers.

She is survived by two sons and daughter-in-law, Harry and Dorthy Williamson of Fairfax Station, and Glen and Ivey Williamson of Raleigh, N.C.; two sisters, Mae Youngblood and Vivian Godwin of Columbia, S.C.; four grandchildren, Jeffrey Williamson of Winchester, Elizabeth Williamson of Fairfax Station, Lee Williamson of Portland, Ore., and Laura K. Williamson of Raleigh, N.C.; five great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

She was a homemaker and for several years she was superintendent of the Danville National cemetery; the first woman to ever hold such a position.

She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church for 60 years. She taught Sunday school for more than 18 years, and for many years helped prepare a weekly luncheons for the Contact Club of the church; there she was well known for her "Cheese Biscuits." In 1982, she was presented an Honorary Life Membership to the "Woman of the Church-Presbyterian Church U.S." She was active in the auxiliaries of various veteran organizations.

The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Monday from the First Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Jack Heinsohn, Jr. and Rev. Dennis Williams officiating. Interment icon will be in Highland Burial Park.

Townes Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements and the family will receive friends at the residence, 372 Norwood Drive from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday. Memorials can be made to Gideon Memorial Bibles, Gideon International, 261 Major Court, Danville, Va. 24540 or to your favorite charity.

Her epitaph reads, "Hers never met a Heart it didn't Lift."

Mary Arnold

DANVILLE, Va. - Mary Martin Arnold, 87, of 549 Parer Road, formerly 78 Stokesland Ave., died 12:40 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 4, 1999 at Danville Regional Medical Center.

Born Nov. 8, 1911 in Danville, Arnold was a daughter of John Wesley Martin and Emma Moore Martin. She was married to Garnett N. Arnold, who died Nov. 14, 1994.

Arnold lived most of her life in Danville and worked in #3 Dress, Dan River Mills, for 37 years. She was a member of Riverview Baptist Church. She taught Sunday School for many years and was also a member of the choir.

She had been in declining health for four years and was the last surviving member of her generation. She had one deceased grandchild.

She is survived by her son, Garnett "Leon" Arnold of Danville, two grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Swicegood Chapel. The Rev. Duane O. Blevins will officiate. Burial will follow in Schoolfield cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Friday at Swicegood Funeral Home. At other times the family will be at the residence, 549 Parker Road.

Thomas Barber

CASCADE, Va. - Thomas Harden Barber, 77, of Route 1 died Wednesday, Nov. 3, 1999 at Hampton Hills Assisted Living in Durham, N.C., after five years of declining health.

Born Oct. 3, 1922 in Ruffin, N.C., he was the son of Thomas Madison Barber and Danie Gauldin Barber. He was married to Doris McCubbins who predeceased him..

Barber lived in the Cascade community and was employed by Dan River Inc. prior to retirement. He was a member of Willis Memorial Baptist Church, where he served on the board of deacons, as well as Sunday School Superintendent and choir director. Barber was a veteran of the United States Army who served during World War II.

Survivors include one son, Thomas Michael Barber of Danville; one daughter, Deborah B. Hoskins of Pelham, N.C.; his brother, Richard Barber of Danville; three sisters, Juanita B. Pickeral of Danville, Barbara B. Ball of Danville and Ruth B. Welch of Suffolk; eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by a son, Jerry Barber, two brothers, Willie Barber and Billy Barber, and three sisters, Sarah B. Davis, Ruby B. Welch and Virginia Barber.

A graveside funeral will take place at 2 p.m. Saturday in Danville Memorial Gardens. The Rev. Bill Preslar and the Rev. Hayward Alcorn will officiate.

Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Ricky Burch Sr.

DANVILLE, Va. - Ricky L. Burch Sr., 47, of 183 Nelson Ave. died Wednesday, Nov. 3, 1999 at Danville Regional Medical Center after several years of declining health.

Born June 21, 1952 in Danville, Burch was a son of E. Alton Burch of Ringgold who survives and Lorraine Pierce Burch who died July 25, 1982. He was married to Kathryn Anderson Burch who survives.

He was a member of Grace Design Untied Methodist Church. He lived most of his life in Danville. A veteran of the U.S. Army, Burch served in the Vietnam War. He was retired due to a disability sustained as a veteran.

In addition to his wife and father, Burch is survived by two daughters, Carla B. Richardson of Gibsonville, N.C., and Brittany Burch of Savannah, Ga.; one son, Ricky L. Burch Jr. of Douglas, Ga.; his step-mother, Anna C. Burch of Ringgold; two brothers, Ronnie W. Burch of Keeling and Larry E. Burch of Danville; two step-sisters, Dawn Tyson of Danville and Wendy Buffington; and two grandsons.

Burch's funeral will take place 2 p.m. Saturday at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel. The Rev. Scott Holcomb-McClain will officiate. Interment icon will follow at Highland Burial Park with military honors conducted by the Americal Legion Post No. 325.

The family will be at the residence of Burch's father, E. Alton Burch, 1732 Rock Springs Road, Ringgold.

Gregory, Carlton E., D.D.S.

MCLEAN, Va. - Gregory E. Carlton, D.D.S., of Mclean, VA, died in an automobile accident November 2, 1999.

Born in Callands, VA, he practiced general and restorative dentistry in Arlington for over 40 years. After attending Averett College and the University of Richmond, he graduated from the Medical College of Virginia in 1951. He served as administrative officer in the USAF from 1942-1946, completed Officer Candidate School and attained the rank of Major.

He was Past President and fellow of the Virginia State Dental Association, Fellow in the American Academy of Prosthodontics, member of American Academy of Restorative Dentistry and delegate to the American Dental Association.

He served as Past President of Kiwanis Club of Arlington, Board Member of Arlington Chamber of Commerce, and was a life member of the Washington Golf and Country Club.

Survivors include his wife, Anne Morton Gregory; three daughters, Julia Gregory Sleeman of Richmond, Dr. Mary E. Gregory of Arlington and Donna Gregory Hutcherson of Springfield; two sons, Carlton E. Gregory Jr. of Alexandria and Claiborne B. "Chip" Morton of Birmingham, Ala.; seven grandchildren; two sisters, Audrey Gregory Finney of Martinsville and Stella Gregory McCubbins of Callands.

Visitation on Sunday, November 7, from 3 to 5 p.m. at The Murphy Funeral Home of Arlington, 4510 Wilson Blvd.

Funeral services will be held at McLean Presbyterian Church, 1020 Balls Hill Rd., McLean, Va., 11 a.m. Monday, November 8. Interment icon Columbia Gardens cemetery, Arlington, Va.

Izaiah Perkins

RIDGEWAY, Va. - Infant Izaiah Marquis Perkins, of 246 Speedway Road, died Thursday, Nov. 4, 1999, at Martinsville Memorial Hospital of Henry County.

He was the son of Minister Paul Perkins and Carolyn Nibblett Perkins, who survive.

In addition to his parents of the residence, survivors include his maternal grandparents, Millard Nibblett of Gretna, and Mary Nibblett of Chatham; his paternal grandparents, Isaac Perkins and Laura Perkins of Ridgeway.

A funeral will be 2 p.m. Monday at The New Life Apostolic Church with the Elder Charlie Witcher officiating. Burial will be in church cemetery.

Miller Funeral Home, Gretna, is in charge of arrangements.

Elizabeth Sadler

DANVILLE, Va. - Elizabeth Rogers Sadler, 91, of 222 Courtland St., died Friday, Nov. 5, 1999, at Riverside Health Care Center.

Born Nov. 17, 1907, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of James Barksdale "Jim" Rogers and Delie Bryant Rogers.

She was married Nov. 3, 1928, to Robert Lindsey "Jim" Sadler, who predeceased her Nov. 5, 1965.

She lived her entire life in Danville and was a seamstress for many years. She was the oldest member of the New Testament Baptist Church.

Survivors include two daughters, Marie S. Clark and Shirley S. Hopkins, both of Danville; one son, William L. Sadler of Danville; one sister, Frances DeMarcus of Ringgold; one brother, Harold Rogers of Winston-Salem, N.C.; six grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

She was predeceased by five brothers, Buford Rogers, Wallace Rogers, Percy Rogers, Phillip Rogers and J.B. Rogers Jr.

A funeral will be 2 p.m. Monday at Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel with the Rev. Lee VonEime, the Rev. Hylton Lawrence and the Rev. John Meadows officiating. Burial will be Floral Hills Memory Garden.

The family will receive friends 7:30-8:30 p.m. Sunday at the chapel and at other times at the residence of one of her daughters, Shirley Hopkins at 188 Hamlin Ave.

Dr. Henry L. Sublett

BAY RIDGE, Va. - Dr. Henry L. Sublett, a longtime resident of Bay Ridge, died Thursday, Nov. 4, 1999, at Annapolis Nursing and Rehabilitative Center, after a lengthly illness.

Born Nov. 8, 1926, in Danville, he was the son of Henry L. Sublett Sr. and Freya Cramer Sublett.

He married May 24, 1975, to Barbara "Bambi" Sublett, who survives.

He grew up in Danville, where he graduated from high school. He was a veteran of the United States Navy serving in World War II.

He attended Randolph-Macon College in Ashland, and received his bachelor of arts degree in history from Duke University. He received a master's degree and a doctorate from the University of Virginia.

He retired in January 1989, after more than 37 years in the teaching profession beginning as a sixth-grade teacher in Florida. He became a principal at an elementary school in Charlottesville, and later taught at Madison College, West Virginia University and Duke University.

After 12 years at Duke, he became chair of the Dept. of Early Childhood-Elementary Education at University of Maryland at College Park. He concluded his career as professor of education at Maryland after serving on the faculty for over 14 years.

He was active in his professional organizations. He was also an honorary life member of the Virginia Congress of Parents and Teachers, a life member of the National Education Association, a member of Kappa Delta Pi, an honor society in education, and Phi Delta Kappa fraternity in Education. His social fraternity was Delta Sigma Phi. He was a mason and at one time was Chaplain of the Masonic Lodge in Annapolis. He was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star.

A member of Heritage Baptist Church, he served some time ago as Sunday School Director. He was also a member of the Sons of the American Revolution and the Sons of Confederate Veterans. He was an avid reader and much interested in genealogy, having written extensively in the field of his family history.

In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include one son, Henry L. Sublett III of Korea; one brother, Benjamin Whitfield Sublett of Birmingham, Ala.; and one grandson.

A funeral will be 10 a.m. Monday at John M. Taylor Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will be in Maryland Veterans cemetery, Crownsville.

A visitation will be 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home chapel.
