DANVILLE, Va. - Aleen Jordan Wright, 77, formerly of 411 Granville Drive, died Friday, Nov. 5, 1999, at Holy Spirit Hospital, Camp Hill, Pa.
Born Jan. 27, 1922, in Danville, she was the daughter of Dorsey H. Jordan and Leatha Anne Taylor Jordan.
She was married
April 25, 1942, to Victor Columbus Wright, who predeceased her Feb. 23, 1972.
She lived in Danville until 1957, when she moved to Pittsburgh, and returning to Danville in 1972. She was a member of Third Avenue Congregational Chrsitian Church.
Survivors include three sons, Nelson Douglas Wright of San Diego, Donald Wayne Wright of Harve DeGrace, Md., and Ronald James Wright of Baltimore; four daughters, Willa Frances Hals of New Cumberland, Md., Wanda Marie Spaid of Woodland Hills, Utah, Marlene Victoria Carey of Washington, and Christene Carla Foster of Churchville, Md.; one sister, Alee Josephine Neal of Danville; 17 grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, four step-grandchildren and two step-great-grandchildren.
A funeral will be 11 a.m. Monday at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel with the Rev. Freddy J. Vicks officiating. Interment
will be in Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends 7:30-8:30 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home chapel.
Melvin Adkins
DANVILLE, Va. - Melvin Paul Adkins, 73, of 610 Mount Cross Road died Friday, Nov. 5, 1999, at Memorial Hospital of Martinsville/Henry County after being in declining health for several years.
Born March 8, 1926, in Danville, he was the son of Johnny D. and Ruth Vaughan Adkins.
He was married
Oct. 6, 1973, to Barbara Chaney Adkins, who survives.
He was predeceased by two brothers, James D. Adkins and Edward T. Adkins, and two sisters, Rosa Ferguson and Rachel Doolin.
He lived his entire life in the Danville area, and prior to his retirement worked for Hamilton Manufacturing.
He was a member of the former Lynn Haven Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon. He was a World War II Navy veteran. He was also a member of the American Legion Post #325.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include one daughter, Karen A. Murphy of Danville; five sons, Melvin Paul "Jack" Adkins Jr. of Plant City, Fla., D.W. Adkins of Las Vegas, Nev., J.D. "Jim" Adkins of Holley Springs, N.C., J.P. Adkins of Richmond and Lynn Adkins of Waverly; two sisters, Erma Gosney of Danville and Barbara Murphy of Richmond; one brother, Albert Adkins of Shelby, N.C.; 14 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at Highland Burial Park, with the Rev. A. Kyle Flora officiating. Burial will include military honors by the American Legion Post #325.
The family will receive friends at the residence of his sister-in-law, Doris Childress, 201 Franklin Turnpike.

Jodie Baldwin
DANVILLE, Va. - Jodie Woodrow Baldwin, 78, of 231 Lansbury Drive died Friday, Nov. 5, 1999, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Aug. 9, 1921, in Black Creek, Wilson County, N.C., he was the son of Claude E. Baldwin and Lila Whaley Baldwin.
He was married
Dec. 24, 1942, to Mary Farson Baldwin, who survives.
He was predeceased by a son, Jodie Llewellyn Baldwin, and a brother, Cecil L. Baldwin.
He lived in Richmond and Lynchburg prior to returning to Danville in 1983. He was a rural letter carrier with the U.S. Postal Service for 39 years. He attended the Danville Technical Institute and John Hopkins University.
He was a member of Melville Avenue Baptist Church. He was also a life member of the Disabled American Veterans and the local D.A.V. chapter #19. He served as an adjunct member of the Lynchburg D.A.V. chapter #8 for many years.
He was a World War II Army veteran, having served in England and the European Theater. He served with the 239th Signal Radar Maintenance Unit and was attached to the 3rd Army under the command of Gen. George S. Patton.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include one daughter, Mary Jo Baldwin Reid, and son-in-law, Boyce G. Reid, of Midlothian; one sister, Ardena B. Wilson of Bristol; and two grandchildren, Susan R. Chadduck of Spokane, Wash., and Christopher B. Reid of Richmond.
A graveside service will be held 2 p.m. Sunday at Highland Burial Park, with the Rev. Charles Swanson and the Rev. Fred Cox officiating. Burial will include full military honors by the American Legion Post #325.
The family will receive friends at 231 Lansbury Drive.

Elizabeth Beard
SOUTH BOSTON, Va. - Elizabeth Bailey Beard, 65, of Wendell, N.C., and formerly of South Boston, died Friday, Nov. 5, 1999, at Rex Hospital in Raleigh, N.C.
Born in Wilmington, Del., she was the daughter of Marcellus French Carrington and Ruth Sevier Hale.
She was a member of the Dan River Baptist Church and the North Haven Church of Raleigh, N.C. She was a registered nurse for more than 40 years, 26 of those years at Halifax Regional Hospital.
Survivors include one daughter, Roberta Beard Swinson of Wendell, N.C.; one sister, Mary Anne Bonavita of Dover, Del.; one brother, Robert Harold Bailey of Marietta, Ga.; and one grandson, Elijah Swinson of Wendell, N.C.
Graveside services will be held 3 p.m. Monday at the Oak Ridge cemetery, with the Rev. Randy Carter and the Rev. Joe Brewer officiating.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to North Haven Church, Six Forks Road, Raleigh, or the Hospice of Wake County, N.C.
The family will receive friends from 1-2 p.m. Monday at Powell Funeral Home in South Boston.
Ava Bledsoe
STOKESDALE, N.C - Ava H. Bledsoe, 78, of 237 Middleton Road died Friday afternoon, Nov. 5, 1999, at her residence.
She was born Dec. 1, 1920, in Pittsylvania County, Va.
She was married
to Jessie M. Bledsoe, who predeceased her.
Survivors include one daughter and son-in-law, Linda and Richard Mitchell of Stokesdale; one son and daughter-in-law, the Rev. Dr. Jessie and Brenda Bledsoe of First Presbyterian Church in Pilot Mountain; two sisters, Nannie Perkins of Greensboro and Juanita Combs of Lancaster, S.C.; four grandchildren and two-great grandchildren, Christopher and Brianna Mitchell.
A graveside service will be held 11 a.m. Monday at Schoolfield cemetery in Danville, Va.
The family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. Sunday at Brooke Funeral Home in Stokesdale.

Zevelva Booth
DANVILLE, Va. - Zevelva Boyd Booth, 77, of 1208 Westover Drive died Thursday, Nov. 4, 1999, at her residence.
Born Dec. 26, 1921, in Harrell, Ky., she was a daughter of Tosh and Fannie Boyd.
She was married
Aug. 27, 1955, to Algie E. Booth, who survives.
She worked at Dan River Inc. as a spinner until retirement. She was a member of Riverview Baptist Church, where she was a former Sunday school teacher.
Other survivors include one daughter, Betty S. Harville of Danville; one son, Tommy Allen Jr. of Anderson, S.C.; four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Sunday at Barker Funeral Home Chapel, with the Rev. Dr. Samuel Lou Greeson. Burial will be in the Danville Memorial Gardens.
Carlton E. Gregory
D.D.S.
MCLEAN, Va. - Carlton E. Gregory, D.D.S., of Mclean, VA, died in an automobile accident November 2, 1999.
Born in Callands, VA, he practiced general and restorative dentistry in Arlington for over 40 years. After attending Averett College and the University of Richmond, he graduated from the Medical College of Virginia in 1951. He served as administrative officer in the USAF from 1942-1946, completed Officer Candidate School and attained the rank of Major.
He was Past President and Fellow of the Virginia State Dental Association, Fellow in the American Academy of Prosthodontics, member of American Academy of Restorative Dentistry and delegate to the American Dental Association. He served as Past President of Kiwanis Club of Arlington, Board Member of Arlington Chamber of Commerce, and was a life member of the Washington Golf and Country Club.
Survivors include his wife, Anne Morton Gregory; three daughters, Julia Gregory Sleeman of Richmond, Dr. Mary E. Gregory of Arlington and Donna Gregory Hutcheson of Springfield; two sons, Carlton E. Gregory Jr. of Alexandria and Claiborne B. "Chip" Morton of Birmingham, Ala.; seven grandchildren; two sisters, Audrey Gregory Finney of Martinsville and Stella Gregory McCubbins of Callands.
Visitation on Sunday, November 7, from 3 to 5 p.m. at The Murphy Funeral Home of Arlington, 4510 Wilson Blvd.
Funeral services will be held at McLean Presbyterian Church, 1020 Balls Hill Rd., McLean, Va., 11 a.m. Monday, November 8. Interment

Elizabeth Sadler
DANVILLE, Va. - Elizabeth Rogers Sadler, 91, of 222 Courtland St. died Friday, Nov. 5, 1999, at Riverside Health Care Center.
Born Nov. 17, 1907, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of James Barksdale "Jim" Rogers and Delie Bryant Rogers.
She was married
Nov. 3, 1928, to Robert Lindsey "Jim" Sadler, who died Nov. 5, 1965.
She lived her entire life in Danville and was a seamstress for many years. She was the oldest member of the New Testament Baptist Church.
Survivors include two daughters, Marie S. Clark and Shirley S. Hopkins, both of Danville; one son, William L. Sadler of Danville; one sister, Frances DeMarcus of Ringgold; one brother, Harold Rogers of Winston-Salem, N.C.; six grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
She was predeceased by five brothers, Buford Rogers, Wallace Rogers, Percy Rogers, Phillip Rogers and J.B. Rogers Jr.
A funeral will be 2 p.m. Monday at Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel, with the Rev. Lee VonEime, the Rev. Hylton Lawrence and the Rev. John Meadows officiating. Burial will be Floral Hills Memory Garden.
The family will receive friends 7:30-8:30 p.m. Sunday at the chapel, and at other times at the residence of her daughter, Shirley Hopkins, 188 Hamlin Ave.
Emily Terry
DANVILLE, Va. - Emily Clark Terry, 94, formerly of 221 Montague St., died Saturday morning, Nov. 6, 1999, at the Roman Eagle Memorial Home.
Born Oct. 12, 1905, in Granville County, N.C, she was a daughter of Floyd Clark and Alice Daniel Clark.
She was married
to William P. Clark, who died Feb. 15, 1962. She lived in Danville most all of her life.
She was a graduate of East Carolina Teacher's College and the Danville Memorial Hospital School of Nursing. She was a private duty nurse for a number of years.
She was a member of Amis Chapel Baptist Church and was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
Survivors include a niece, Ruth Currin of Oxford, N.C., and a nephew, William Graham Clark Jr. of Nice, Fla.
Graveside services will be 3 p.m. Monday at Amis Chapel Baptist Church cemetery, with the Rev. Malvin Tucker officiating.
The family will receive friends from 6-7 p.m. Sunday at Townes Funeral Home.
Elizabeth Thompson
DANVILLE, Va. - Elizabeth Johnson Thompson, 87, of 425 Maple Lane died Saturday, Nov. 6, 1999, at her residence.
Born April 29, 1912, in Atlanta, she was a daughter of John Charles Johnson and Lottie Baker Johnson.
She was married
in 1936 to Leonard M. Thompson, who survives.
She spent her early life in Decatur, Ga., where she graduated from Agnes Scott College in 1934. She moved to Danville in 1941 and was active in many organizations.
She was a member of the Mount Vernon United Methodist Church, where she served two terms as president of the Mount Vernon United Methodist Women. She also served as president of the Wednesday Club, Forest Hills PTA and Forest Hills Garden Club. She was a member of the Dorothea Henry Chapter of DAR.
In addition to her husband of the home, survivors include a daughter, Anne Thompson Geyer of Danville; two sons, William Charles Thompson of Lexington, Ky., and James Leonard Thompson of Cincinnati, Ohio; four grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
A private burial will precede a memorial service that will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday at Mount Vernon United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Jay Asby officiating.
The family will receive friends in the church parlor immediately after the service and at other times at the residence.
