DANVILLE, Va. - Gwendolyn R. Walker, 63, of 503 Freeze Road died Thursday, Nov. 4, 1999, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Sept. 1, 1936, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Willie Obery and Lillie S. Robertson.
She was married
to John W. Walker Jr., who predeceased her.
She was a member of Shockoe Baptist Church, the senior choir and the kitchen committee. She was a member of Shockoe Courts of Calanthe #250.
She was employed by Servitex Linen Service.
Survivors include three daughters, Gayle W. Coleman of Ringgold, Felicia W. Moore of Danville and Vanessa W. Allen of Ashburn; four brothers, John Robertson of Trenton, N.J., Lambert Robertson of Java, and Kenneth Robertson and James Roberston, both of Chatham; four sisters, Willie A. Glass of Chester, Pa., Lucille Rogers of Akron, Ohio, and Thelma Grasty and Ernestine Adams, both of Java; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Monday at Shockoe Baptist Church, with the Rev. George H. Pass officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
A viewing will be 4-7 p.m. Sunday at Shockoe Baptist Church.
The family will receive friends at the residence of Mr. and Mrs. Moore, 503 Freeze Road.

Clorie Bennett
DANVILLE, Va. - Clorie Ellen Ross Bennett, 73, of 699 Claiborne St., died Friday, Nov. 5, 1999 at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born March 8, 1926 in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of the late Ellen Younger Ross.
She was married
to Willie Bennett, who survives.
She was predeceased by one son, John T. Edmunds.
She was employed with Dan River Inc. for many years prior to her retirement.
In addition to her husband of the residence, survivors include two daughters, Clorie Wiles and Naomi Adams, both of Danville; two stepsons, one stepdaughter, two sons-in-law; seven grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and many friends.
Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Chapel of Fisher and Watkins Funeral Home. Burial will follow in Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends at 117 Courtney St.
Etta Chapman
DANVILLE, Va. - Mrs. Etta Virginia (McQuire) Chapman, 82, died Sunday, Nov. 7, 1999, at her home.
She was predeceased by one son, Wayne P. Chapman.
She was a member of 3rd Ave. Congregational Christian Church in Danville as well as 1st Church of God of Allison Gap in Saltville, VA.
Survivors include her husband, Preston Denny Chapman of Danville; two sons, Donald M. Chapman and his wife Wilma of Conyers, Ga. and Dale D. Chapman and his wife Linda of Danville, VA.; one daughter, Gale Turner and her husband Michael of Richmond, VA; one daughter-in-law, Doris (Jackson) Chapman of Glade Spring, VA; one sister, Ola Henderson of Marion, VA; five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and several nieces and nephews.
A funeral service for Mrs. Etta Chapman will be conducted at 8 p.m. Tuesday (Nov. 9, 1999) in The D.R. Henderson Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. David Mumpower officiating.
The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Tuesday evening prior to services.
Graveside services will be conducted at 9 a.m. Wednesday (Nov. 10, 1999) at the Mount Rose cemetery.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Danville Rescue Squad.
Adelaide Hagaman
DANVILLE, Va. - Adelaide Carter Hagaman, 83, of 2461 Sugar Tree Church Road, died Sunday, Nov. 7, 1999, at Memorial Hospital of Martinsville.
Born Oct. 2, 1916, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Althana Oaks Oliver and William Oliver.
She was employed by the U.S. government as a civil servant. She was a member of Bethleham Baptist Church.
She was an active member of the Virginia Heights Baptist Church, Norfolk, for over 50 years.
Survivors include two daughters, Judith Perry of Virginia Beach and Gayle Pacini of Danville; two stepdaughters, Nancy Weidmaier of Chesapeake, and Jane Hagaman of Charlottesville; three sisters, Harriet Wagner, Marie Miller and Charlotte Turner, all of Danville; 10 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by one son, William Emerson Hyler Jr.
A memorial service will be held 3 p.m. Tuesday at Bethlehem Baptist Church with the Rev. J.B. Haldridge officiating.

Irene Hall
RIDGEWAY, Va. - Irene Chaney Hall, 79, of 134 Ken Lane, died Saturday, Nov. 6, 1999, at Memorial Hospital of Martinsville.
Born Dec. 11, 1919, in Franklin County, she was the daughter of Charlie Chaney and Maude Via Chaney.
She was a retired beautician and a member of Ridgeway Baptist Church.
She was married
to Dexter Hall, who survives.
In addition to her husband of the residence, survivors include two sons, David D. Hall of Danville and Danny E. Hall of Tampa, Fla.; three grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by a sister, Nellie Chaney Scott; and a brother, Otis Chaney.
A funeral will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday at Collins Funeral Home Chapel, Bassett with the Rev. Roger Stanley officiating. Interment
will be in Roselawn Burial Park.
The family will receive friends 6-8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.
Katherine Hopper
FREDERICKSBURG, Va. - Katherine Edmondson Hopper, 91, formerly of Fairfax, died Saturday, Nov. 6, 1999, at Johnson Willis Hospital, Richmond.
Born June 9, 1908, in Halifax County, she was the daughter of Richard Allen Edmondson and Sallie Anne Ballow Edmondson.
She was a member of Trinity Episcopal Church.
She graduated from Mary Washington College Phi Beta Kapa and later received her doctorate.
She taught in the Fairfax County School System for 40 years and was director of guidance for the school system.
Remaining closely associated with Mary Washington College, she was the director of the Governors School for the Gifted and was a member of the board of directors.
She was a past president of the Virginia Education Association.
Survivors include one niece, Frances Katherine Stevens Ferguson of Palm Coast, Fla.; and one nephew, William Howard Tulloh of Midlothian.
A graveside service will be held 11:30 a.m. Tuesday at Oak Ridge cemetery with the Rev. Dewitt Loomis officiating.
The family will receive friends 10-11 a.m. Tuesday at Powell Funeral Home.
Gilbert Loftis Jr.
DANVILLE, Va. - Gilbert Samuel "Junior" Loftis Jr., 59, of 428 Vicar Road, died Sunday, Nov. 7, 1999, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Dec. 31, 1939, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of Gilbert S. Loftis and Laura Adkins Loftis.
He was the owner/operator of Triple A Plumbing.
He was a member of Oak Grove Baptist Church, Keeling.
He was married
to Brenda S. "Bunny" Loftis on Oct. 2, 1982, who survives.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include two sons, Gilbert S. "Sammy" Loftis III of Blairs and Randall S. "Scotty" Loftis of Danville; one stepson, Randolph G. "Greg" Saunders of Ohio; one daughter, Donna L. Pruitt of Danville; two sisters, Vergia L. Dalton of Keeling and Audrey L. "Boots" Grant of Danville; and 11 grandchildren.
He was predeceased by one stepson, Charles D. "Chuck" Saunders.
A funeral will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday at Barker Funeral Home with the Rev. Tom Erwin officiating. Interment
will be in Highland Burial Park.

Laughton Rowland Sr.
GRETNA, Va. - Laughton Talmadge Rowland Sr., 90, of 113 Music St. died Sunday, Nov. 7, 1999, in Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born April 28, 1909, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of Robert Rowland and Nannie Simpson Rowland.
He was a retired farmer and a weaver with Dan River Inc. He was of the Baptist faith.
He was married
to Nora R. Rowland, who survives.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include one daughter, Carol R. Pickral of Gretna; three sons, Wesley B. Rowland of Fredericksburg, and Frank W. Rowland and Laughton Talmadge Rowland Jr., both of Chatham; two sisters, Belle Pickral and Nannie Midkiff, both of Gretna; 15 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by one son, R.C. "Boots" Rowland.
A funeral will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday at Springfield Primitive Baptist Church with Elder Marvin Brumfield and Elder Raymond Goad officiating.

KEELING, Va. - Raleigh Thompson, 94, of 502 Keesee Lane, died Sunday, Nov. 7, 1999, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Nov. 5, 1905, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of Jim Thompson and Daisy C. Thompson.
He married
Maude T. Thompson, who predeceased him.He was a self-employed farmer and a member of New Mine Creek Primitive Baptist Church, and served on the trustee board.
Survivors include two sons, Charlie Henry Thompson of Keeling and Raleigh Thompson Jr. of Goldsboro, N.C.; two sisters, Mamie Nash and Gertrude Morton, both of Danville; six grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
A viewing will be 4-8 p.m. Wednesday at Cunningham and Hughes Funeral Home.

SOUTH BOSTON, Va - Ruby Creasy Hughes, 59, of 2218 Cluster Springs Road, died Monday, Nov. 8, 1999, at Somerset Court of South Boston.
Born Dec. 28, 1939, in Bedford, she was the daughter of Ray Creasy Sr. and Etta Lee Conner Creasey.
She married
Charlie Brann Hughes Sr., who predeceased her.
She was a supervisor with Tultex and was a member of Black Walnut Baptist Church.
Survivors include two daughters, Wanda Pool and Cynthia Smith, both of South Boston; one son, Charlie B. Hughes Jr. of South Boston; four sisters, Marion Morris and Becky Echols, both of Ringgold, Barbara Snead of South Boston and Debbie Root of Waynesboro; two brothers Bernard Creasy of Halifax and Ray Creasey Jr. of South Boston; and five grandchildren.
A funeral will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Black Walnut Baptist Church with the Rev. Grover Stevens officiating. Burial will be in Halifax Memorial Gardens.
