Catherine Luck
DANVILLE, Va. - Catherine Winslow Luck, 95, of 341 Holbrook Street, died Saturday, November 6, 1999, at her home after several months of declining health.
Born January 7, 1904, in Danville, Virginia, Mrs. Luck was the only daughter of the late Albert L. Winslow, M.D. and Mrs. Cecelia R. Winslow. She was married
for 36 years to Clyde A. Luck, M.D., who predeceased her.
A lifelong resident of Danville, she was educated in the Danville schools and completed High School at St. Augustine's College in Raleigh, North Carolina. She was a graduate of Howard University in Washington, D.C., where she received a bachelor of Arts Degree in Home Economics in 1927. Subsequently, she matriculated at Columbia University in New York City, where she was Awarded a masters's Degree in Home Economics. Mrs. Luck was a professor of home Economics at Bennett College in Greensboro, North Carolina and also worked for the Community Improvement Council in Danville.
She was a loyal, faithful and lifelong member of the High Street Baptist Church, where her maternal grandfather served as the first Pastor. She served in various capacities at the church including the choir, the Missionary Circle, the Dudley School, the Galedia Class and countless others. She was a charter member of the Links, Inc., Danville Chapter, and member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority for over 70 years joining the Alpha Phi Omega Chapter in 1931, and was a faithful member of the "As You Like It Club." Mrs. Luck also served on the Board of Directors, Y.M.C.A., was a member of Church Women United and numerous other professional organizations.
Her survivors include two sons, Clyde A. Luck, Jr., M.D. and Albert H. Luck, M.D.; two daughters-in-law, Janet E. Luck and Merle M. Luck; two granddaughters, Kelli Luck Slade Esquire and Lori R. Luck, M.D.; and two great-grandsons, Sadat A. Slade and John C. Slade all of Los Angeles, California.
Funeral services for Mrs. Luck will be conducted Friday, November 12, 2:00 p.m. from High Street Baptist Church with Rev. Jerome B. Morris officiating. Interment
will follow in Oak Hill cemetery.
Mrs. Luck may be viewed from 4:00 to 8:00 on Thursday evening at Cunningham and Hughes Memorial Chapel. Private ceremonies will be conducted at 6:00 and 7:00 p.m.
The family will be at the residence, 341 Holbrook Street.

John McGuire
ROANOKE, Va. - John William McGuire, 67, formerly of Danville, died Sunday, Nov. 7, 1999, at Roanoke Memorial Hospital.
Born July 21, 1932, in Danville, he was the son of George Thomas McGuire Sr. and Winnie Moorefield McGuire.
He was formerly married
to Charlotte Doolin McGuire in November 1949, who survives.
He was a veteran of the United States Army. He worked at Laramore Construction as a worker until retirement and was of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include three sons, Donald W. McGuire of Danville, Ronald L. McGuire of Ringgold, and Jerry L. McGuire of Pelham, N.C.; and four grandchildren.
He was predeceased by one sister, Peggy M. Bernard; and one brother, George T. McGuire Jr.
A private memorial service will be held at a later date.

James Osborne
KEELING, Va. - James Harvey Osborne, 71, of 7889 Slatesville Road, and formerly of Stokesland Avenue, Danville, died Monday, Nov. 8, 1999, at the Veterans Administration Hospital, Salem after two years of declining health.
Born Aug. 2, 1928, in Elkin, N.C., he was the son of Harvey L. Osborne and Ethel West Osborne.
He married
Dorothy Worley Osborne, who survives.
He was a veteran of the United States Army serving during the Korean Conflict. He spent most of his life in Providence, N.C., and Danville. He retired from Dan River Inc. after 48 years of service and attended True Gospel Baptist Church and the Church of the Brethren on Westover Drive.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include one son, Allan Osborne of Ringgold; one daughter, Aileen Andrews of Martinsville; one brother, Eugene W. Osborne of Yanceyville, N.C.; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
A graveside service will be 4 p.m. Thursday at Schoolfield cemetery with the Rev. Hubert Inman and the Rev. Leonard Martin officiating.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Wednesday at Swicegood Funeral Home and at other times at the residence.
Bertha Shell
DANVILLE, Va. - Bertha Mae Shrader Shell, 94, of 115 Shannon Drive, died on November 8, 1999, after a short illness.
Born on October 12, 1905, at Honaker, Virginia, she was the daughter of George Beverly Shrader and Robina Beavers Shrader.
Mrs. Shell graduated from Radford University and spent most of her life in Buchanan County, Virginia where she taught school. After retiring in 1971, she moved to Danville.
She was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church, where she taught an adult Sunday School class. She was a member and former treasurer of Alpha Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma Society. She was a life member of the Virginia Retired Teachers Association. For many years, she was a volunteer at Danville Regional Medical Center.
She was married
to Blane Jones, who predeceased her, and later to Edward Shell, also deceased.
Mrs. Shell is survived by one daughter, Margaret Jones Dorton, and son-in-law, Charles E. Dorton, three granddaughters, Karen D. Winstead, Nina L. Dorton and Mary M. Dorton, and three great-grandsons, all of Danville. Also surviving is one sister, Agnes Lane of Raven, Virginia. She was predeceased by two brothers and two sisters.
The funeral will be conducted at Wrenn Yeatts Funeral Home North Main Street Chapel by the Rev. Linwood Daniel at 10:00 A.M., Wednesday, November 10, 1999. Graveside services will be held at Clinch Valley cemetery, Richlands, Virginia at 4:00 p.m.
The family will receive friends from 7:00 till 8:30 p.m., Tuesday, November 9, 1999, at Wrenn Yeatts Funeral Home, and other times at the residence.
The family requests no flowers.
Raleigh Thompson
KEELING, Va. - Raleigh Thompson, 94, of 502 Keesee Lane, died Sunday, Nov. 7, 1999, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Nov. 5, 1905, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of Jim Thompson and Daisy C. Thompson.
He married
Maude T. Thompson, who predeceased him.He was a self-employed farmer and a member of New Mine Creek Primitive Baptist Church, and served on the trustee board.
Survivors include two sons, Charlie Henry Thompson of Keeling and Raleigh Thompson Jr. of Goldsboro, N.C.; two sisters, Mamie Nash and Gertrude Morton, both of Danville; six grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
A viewing will be 4-8 p.m. Wednesday at Cunningham and Hughes Funeral Home.
A funeral will be 1 p.m. Thursday at New Mine Creek Primitive Baptist Church with Elder Bernard Bolton officiating. Interment
will be in Highland Burial Park.

Ruby Hughes
SOUTH BOSTON, Va - Ruby Creasy Hughes, 59, of 2218 Cluster Springs Road, died Monday, Nov. 8, 1999, at Somerset Court of South Boston.
Born Dec. 28, 1939, in Bedford, she was the daughter of Ray Creasy Sr. and Etta Lee Conner Creasey.
She married
Charlie Brann Hughes Sr., who predeceased her.
She was a supervisor with Tultex and was a member of Black Walnut Baptist Church.
Survivors include two daughters, Wanda Pool and Cynthia Smith, both of South Boston; one son, Charlie B. Hughes Jr. of South Boston; four sisters, Marion Morris and Becky Echols, both of Ringgold, Barbara Snead of South Boston and Debbie Root of Waynesboro; two brothers Bernard Creasy of Halifax and Ray Creasey Jr. of South Boston; and five grandchildren.
A funeral will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Black Walnut Baptist Church with the Rev. Grover Stevens officiating. Burial will be in Halifax Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Wednesday at Brooks Funeral Home and at other times at the residence of Cynthia and Randy Smith, 3155 Old Cluster Springs Road.

Baby Nathan Zavala
DANVILLE, Va. - Baby Nathan Margarito Zavala, died Tuesday, Nov. 9, 1999, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Nov. 9, 1999, in Danville, he was the son of Jorge Alfredo Zavala and Lisa Dodson Zavala, who both survive.
In addition to his parents of Danville, survivors include maternal grandparents, Eddie and Sandra Dodson of Ringgold; maternal great-grandmother, Margaret B. Dodson of Ringgold; maternal great grandmother Inez H-Hollie, Danville; paternal grandparents, Jose Margarito and Maria Marcelina Zavala of El Salvador; and paternal great-grandmother Rosa Aminta Zavala of El Salvador.
He was predeceased by his maternal great-grandfathers, Howard E. Dodson Sr. and Allen J. Hollie.
A graveside service will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Barker Family cemetery, Wilkerson Road, Route 730, with the Rev. Carl E. Burger officiating.
