Frances Brown
JAVA, Va. - Frances Yancey Brown of 13649 Halifax Road, died Sunday, Oct 10, 1999, at Halifax Regional Hospital after being in the hospital for six weeks.
Born in Halifax County, she was the daughter of Willie Thornton Yancey and Lottie Thomas Yancey.
She lived most of her life in the Java community where she had been employed by Craddock-Terry Shoe Corp. prior to her retirement.
She was a member of Glen United Methodist Church.
She was married
to Richard Clarence Brown who predeceased her Oct. 8, 1976.
Survivors include two sisters, Virginia Y. Harris of South Boston and Eunice Y. Slayton of Vernon Hill; and two brothers, L. Berkley Yancey of Halifax and Melvin J. Yancey of South Boston.
A funeral will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Street Chapel with the Rev. Michael Teixeria officiating. Interment
will be in Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends at the residence.
Mildred Cobb
DANVILLE, Va. - Mildred S. Cobb, 67, of 167 Riverview Drive, Lot No. 43, died Sunday, Oct. 10, 1999, at Danville Regional Medical Center, after several years of declining health.
Born March 28, 1932, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Robert T. Strader and Pearl Dishmon Strader.
She was married
Aug. 19, 1950, to Thomas M. Cobb, who survives.
She had made her home in the Danville area since 1976, after spending much of her life in Rockingham County, N.C.
A homemaker, she attended Full Gospel Fellowship Church.
In addition to her husband of the residence, survivors include two daughters, Teresa Brummett and Cindy Mitchell, both of Danville; two sisters, Alane Stroud and Ruby Mitchell, both of Danville; one half-sister, Margaret Finch of Colonial Heights; two brothers, Ernest Strader of Reidsville, N.C. and Bobby Strader of Richmond; three grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by four brothers, Clyde Strader, Herman Strader, Lloyd Strader and Harry Strader.
A funeral will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday at Swicegood Funeral Home with the Rev. Roger Ewing officiating. Burial will be in the Danville Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home and at other times at the residence of her daughter, Teresa Brummett, 626 Tamworth Drive.
Jack Fitts Sr.
DANVILLE, Va. - Jack Elvin Fitts Sr., 71, of 339 Brentwood Drive, died Saturday, Oct. 9, 1999, at his residence.
Born Dec. 4, 1927 in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of Arthur F. Fitts and Nora Jordan Fitts.
He was married
to Evelyn Wells Fitts, who survives.
He had lived all his life in Danville and was employed with Smith Douglas Fertilizer Co. for a number of years until his retirement.
He was a member of Shermont Baptist Church.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include one daughter, Elizabeth Abernathy of Danville; two sons, Tommie Fitts of Zebulon, N.C., and Jack Fitts Jr. of Chatanooga, Tenn.; two sisters, Margaret Loftis of Danville and Eula Milam of Ringgold; nine grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
He was predeceased by three brothers, Lester Fitts, Hugh Fitts and James Fitts.
Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Monday at Shermont Baptist Church with the Rev. Bill Soyars and the Rev. Jack Fitts Jr. officiating. Burial will follow in Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends at the residence.

Doris Harris
DANVILLE, Va. - Doris Guill Harris, 82, 224 Courtland St., Holiday Village, Apt. 3, died Saturday, Oct. 9, 1999, at Danville Regional Medical Center after several years of declining health.
Born Dec. 30, 1916 in Danville, she was the daughter of the late Thomas Guill and Nancy Southard Guill.
She was married
to Kahzo Lee Harris, who predeceased her. She spent most of her life in Danville where she was a homemaker and a member of Moffett Memorial Baptist Church.
Survivors include four daughters, Suzanne Durham, Corky Cook, Nancy Warren and Vicki Neal, all of Danville; six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
She also was predeceased by a son, Tom Harris.
Graveside funeral services will be 11 a.m. Monday at Leemont cemetery with the Rev. Lee D. Ellison officiating.
The family will receive friends at the residence of her daughter, Corky Cook, at 434 Wyatt Drive in the Mount Herman community.

Matthew Hodnett
CHATHAM, Va. - Matthew Hodnett, 31, of 1063 Old Franklin Turnpike, died Thursday, Oct. 7, 1999, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Dec. 29, 1967, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of Joseph and Ivory Prunty Hodnett, who survive.
He was employed by Wal-Mart.
In addition to his parents, survivors include four brothers, Turner Hodnett and Moser Hodnett, both of Chatham, Roger Hodnett of Pittsville and Joseph Hodnett Jr. of Petersburg; and two sisters, Pencie McZeek and Brenda Martin, both of Chatham.
A funeral will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday at Miller Funeral Home with the Elder Charlie Witcher, the Rev. Raymond Ramsey and the Rev. B.I. Baize officiating. Burial will be in the Elba cemetery in Gretna.
Turner Hodnett Jr.
CHATHAM, Va. - Turner Hodnett Jr., 14, of 1083 Cooksburg Road, died Thursday, Oct. 7, 1999, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Feb. 26, 1985, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of Turner Hodnett Sr. and Shirley Robertson Hodnett, who survive.
He was an eighth-grade student at Gretna Middle School. He was a member of New Life Apostolic Church in Callands.
In addition to his parents of the residence, survivors include two sisters, Latisha Hodnett and Tiffany Hodnett, both of the residence; paternal grandparents, Joe and Ivory Hodnett of Chatham and maternal grandmother, Ruby Womack of Chatham.
A funeral will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Miller Funeral Home Chapel with the Elder Charlie Witcher, the Rev. Raymond Ramsey and the Rev. B.I. Baize officiating. Burial will follow in the Mease family cemetery in Sandy Level.
Mildred McGregor
DANVILLE, Va. - Mildred Moorefield McGregor, 86, formerly of Blairs, died Sunday, Oct. 10, 1999, at Roman Eagle Memorial Home.
Born Dec. 27, 1912, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Issac N. Moorefield and Lillian Payne Moorefield.
She was a member of Laurel Grove Baptist Church. She retired in 1975 from W.T. Grant in Richmond.
She was married
to Earnest Aubrey McGregor, who predeceased her July 4, 1994.
Survivors include one daughter, Lacy M. Barker of Sutherlin; one son, Aubrey N. McGregor of Richmond; two sisters, Mary Crawford and Nannie Perry, both of Danville; two brothers, Harold Moorefield and Roy Moorefield, both of Danville; eight grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.
She was also predeceased by a son, Jimmie McGregor and a sister, Gertrude Payne.
A graveside service will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday at Highland Burial Park with the Rev. Chris Griggs and the Rev. Bill Soyars officiating.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Monday at Barker Funeral Home and at other time at the residence of her granddaughter, Ellen Hargis, 2440 Double Creek Road, Sutherlin.
Ray Shields
CHATHAM, Va. - Ray Vernon Shields, 69, of 572 Statesville Road, died Oct. 10, 1999, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born March 3, 1930, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of Landon Shields and Geraldine Logan Shields Fitzgerald.
He was a member of Shockoe Baptist Church.
He was married
to Lois Stevens Shields, who survives.
In addition to his wife, survivors include one daughter, Vicky Rae Shields Moore of Sutherlin; and one stepson, Allen Bruce Jones of the residence.
A funeral will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday at Scott Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Michael Huff officiating. Interment
will be in Highland Burial Park, Danville.

William Vaughan
SOUTH BOSTON, Va. - William Briggs Vaughan, 57, of 1218 News Ferry Trail, died Sunday, Oct. 10, 1999, at Halifax Regional Hospital.
Born Nov. 22, 1941, in South Boston, he was the son of Oakley Briggs Vaughan and Margaret Eanes Vaughan.
He was a member of Seven Oaks Baptist Church. He was a handyman by trade.
Survivors include two sons, William B. "Billy" Vaughan of South Boston and Tony Lewis Vaughan of Poplar Bluff, Mo.; three daughters, Lisa Ann Tweedle and Janice V. Leigh, both of Mexia, Tex., and Donna V. Reidman of London, Ky.; four brothers, Phillip Marshall Vaughan, Douglas Wayne Vaughan and James Wesley Vaughan, all of South Boston, and David Oakley Vaughan of Alton; four sisters, Geraldine V. Young and Earline V. Wilborn, both of South Boston, and Carolyn V. Overby of Virgilina and Audrey V. Birchfield of Danville; and nine grandchildren.
He was predeceased by one daughter, Jackie Lynn Vaughan.
A funeral will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday at Brooks Funeral Home with the Rev. Rudolph Jacobs officiating. Burial will be in Halifax Memorial Gardens.

Kathryn Wendt
CHESTERFIELD, Va. - Kathryn Terry Wendt, 89, died Saturday, Oct. 9, 1999.
Survivors include one daughter, Ruby T. Shelton, three stepdaughters, Doris Carlson, Linda Butler and Pat Carberry; two stepsons, Kenneth Wendt and Larry Wendt; three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
A funeral will be held 7 p.m. Tuesday at Morrissett Funeral Home, 6500 Iron Bridge Road, Richmond. The family will receive friends an hour before the service.
Interment will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Highland Burial Park, Danville.
Katlynn Wright
Katlynn Michelle Wright died Thursday, Nov. 11, 1999.
Born Nov. 11, 1999, she was the daughter of David Wright and Mary Ellen R. Wright, who both survive.
In addition to her parents, survivors include one sister, Codi Marie Wright; grandparents Mary H. Reed, Jean O. Scearce, Melvin Wright and Beth Wright.
She was predeceased by grandfathers, Richard H. Reed and James M. Scearce.
A private memorial service will be conducted.
Earnest Hill
SPENCER, Va. - Earnest William Hill, 53, of 178 New Well Drive, died Thursday, Nov. 11, 1999, at Roanoke Memorial Hospital where he stayed for one week.
Born Sept. 24, 1946, in Danville, Va., he was the son of Richard Bernard Hill and Wilsie Ferguson Hill.
He was married
Feb. 16, 1967 to Nancy Pruitt Hill, who survives.
He resided in Danville most of his life, moving to Spencer, in 1985. He owned and operated Earnie's Tile and Etc. Home Improvement Co. He was of the Baptist faith.
He was member of the U.S. Navy.
In addition to his wife, survivors include one son, Earnest William Hill Jr. of Grottoes, Va.; one daughter, Tammy H. Allen of Axton; one brother, Richard Bernard Hill Jr. of Danville. A funeral will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel with the Rev. Carl E. Burger officiating. Burial will be in Floral Hills Memory Garden.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Friday at the chapel and at other times at the residence of Mike Hill, 1833 John Drive, Mount Hermon Community.
