Doris Austin
DANVILLE, Va. - Doris Elizabeth Boaz Austin, 73, of 14329 Mount Cross Road, Swansonville community, died Tuesday, Nov. 9, 1999, at her residence.
Born Jan. 26, 1926, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Eugene F. Boaz Sr. and Mary Austin Boaz.
She married
James C. Austin on June 27, 1953, who survives.
She was a member of Swansonville Pentecostal Holiness Church where she served as secretary-treasurer, Women's Ministries secretary-treasurer, building fund treasurer and taught the nursery-beginners' Sunday School class for more than 50 years.
She had been employed in the financial accounting department for 52 years at Dan River Inc.
In addition to her husband of the residence, survivors include two brothers, Eugene F. Boaz Jr. of Danville and Herman T. Boaz of Kingman, Ariz.; two sisters, Lona B. Holley of Danville and Catherine B. Handy of Dry Fork.
In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by one brother, Robert Cable Boaz.
A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at Swansonville Pentecostal Holiness Church with the Rev. Mike Hearp officiating. Burial will be Swansonville United Methodist cemetery.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Thursday at the church and at other times at the residence of her sister, Catherine Handy, 14289 Mount Cross Road.

William "Bill" Hall
DANVILLE, Va. - William H. "Bill Hall, 86, of 268 West Main Street, died Wednesday at the Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Sept. 27, 1913, he was the son of Thomas Neely Hall and Lissie McCorkle Hall, of Charlotte, N.C. He was the last of three brothers and four sisters of the family.
He married
Josephine Williams Hall, who survives.
He was a member of West Main Baptist Church.
He served in the United States Army during World War II, inducted as a private in the 1940s first draft and discharged in 1947, as a captain in the United States Army (AUS). After his discharge he was employed in Paris from 1947 to 1950, by the State Department.
He returned to the United States and became self-employed while attended George Washington University. Upon graduation from college in 1952, he worked for the Navy's Bureau of Aeronauts as a budget analyst until his full retirement in 1976.
A graveside service will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Mountain View cemetery with the Rev. Bruce Wilson officiating. American Legion Post 325 will conduct full military honors.
The family will receive friends 7-8 p.m. Friday at Swicegood Funeral Home and at other times at the residence.
Samuel Hill
NATHALIE, Va. - Samuel Thornton Hill, 86, of 1213 Cody Road, died Wednesday, Nov. 10, 1999, at Halifax Regional Hospital.
Born Sept. 19, 1913, in Halifax County, he was the son of John William Hill and Abigail Thomas Wyatt Hill.
He was a member of The First Baptist Church of Republic Grove, a charter member of the Volens American Legion Post No. 342.
He was a veteran of the United States Army serving during World War II. Survivors include one sister, Alice Hill Pruitt of Brookneal; one brother, Roy E. Hill, Sr. of Nathalie.
He was predeceased by two sisters, Arlene Hill Bane and Lena Emogene Hill Deaner; and one brother, John Smith Hill.
A funeral will be 2 p.m. Saturday at First Baptist Church of Republican Grove with the Rev. Shelton Miles III officiating. Burial will be in church cemetery.
The family will receive friends 7:30-8:30 p.m. Friday at the Powell Funeral Home and at other times at the residence of his brother, 5152 Chestnut Road, Nathalie.
Martin Keene, Jr.
DANVILLE, Va. - Martin Keene Jr., 90, of 2361 Sugar Creek Road, died Sunday, Nov. 7, 1999, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born April 28, 1908, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of Martin Keene and Nannie Thornton Keene.
He married
Sarah R. Keen, who predeceased him Nov. 12, 1985.
He was a retired employee of Dan River Inc. and was a member of Mount Lebanon Missionary Baptist Church where he sang in the choir and served as a deacon and trustee. He was also a member of Masonic Lodge No. 193.
Survivors include two daughters, Dorothy Sharpe of Camden, N.C., and Mildred A. Price of Miami; seven sons, Clarence E. Keene and Martin Keene, both of New Haven, Conn., Bobby R. Keene of Cascade, DeWright Keene and Ernest Hairston, both of Danville, Louis T. Keene of Shannon, N.C., and Sylvester Robertson of Pittsburgh; one sister, Elnora Robertson of Danville; 22 grandchildren, 33 great-grandchildren and 5 great-great-grandchildren.
A viewing will be noon-8 p.m. Friday at L.H. Brooks and Brothers Funeral Home Chapel.
A funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at Mount Lebanon Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. Frederick Wilson officiating. Burial will be in Danville Memorial Gardens.

Catherine Luck
DANVILLE, Va. - Catherine Winslow Luck, 95, of 341 Holbrook Street, died Saturday, Nov. 6, 1999, at her home after several months of declining health.
Born January 7, 1904, in Danville, Virginia, Mrs. Luck was the only daughter of the late Albert L. Winslow, M.D. and Mrs. Cecelia R. Winslow.
She was married
for 36 years to Clyde A. Luck, M.D., who predeceased her.
A lifelong resident of Danville, she was educated in the Danville schools and completed High School at St. Augustine's College in Raleigh, North Carolina. She was a graduate of Howard University in Washington, D.C., where she received a bachelor of Arts Degree in Home Economics in 1927. Subsequently, she matriculated at Columbia University in New York City, where she was awarded a masters's Degree in Home Economics. Mrs. Luck was a professor of home Economics at Bennett College in Greensboro, North Carolina and also worked for the Community Improvement Council in Danville.
She was a loyal, faithful and lifelong member of the High Street Baptist Church, where her maternal grandfather served as the first pastor. She served in various capacities at the church including the choir, the Missionary Circle, the Sunday School, the Galedia Class and countless others. She was a charter member of the Links, Inc., Danville Chapter, and member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority for over 70 years joining the Alpha Phi Omega Chapter in 1931, and was a faithful member of the "As You Like It Club." She also served on the Board of Directors, Y.W.C.A., was a member of Church Women United and of other professional organizations.
Her survivors include two sons, Clyde A. Luck, Jr., M.D. and Albert H. Luck, M.D.; two daughters-in-law, Janet E. Luck and Merle M. Luck; two granddaughters Kelli Luck Slade Esquire and Lori R. Luck, M.D.; and two great-grandsons, Sadat A. Slade and John C. Slade, all of Los Angeles, California.
Funeral services for Mrs. Luck will be conducted Friday, November 12 2:00 p.m. from High Street Baptist Church with the Rev. Jerome B. Morris officiating. Interment
will follow in Oak Hill cemetery.
Mrs. Luck's viewing was from 4-8 p.m. on Thursday evening at Cunningham and Hughes Memorial Chapel. Private ceremonies will be conducted at 6:00 and 7:00 p.m.
The family will be at the residence, 341 Holbrook Street.

Mary Moorefield
DANVILLE, Va. - Mary Frances Oliver Younger Moorefield, 83, of 440 Wilkerson Road, died Tuesday, Nov. 9, 1999, at the Stratford Health Care Center.
Born March 4, 1916, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Will Oliver and Josephine Oliver.
She married
Willie Martin Younger who predeceased her and later married
Garnet Moorefield, who also predeceased her.
She was employed with Belk Leggett for many years.
Survivors include one son, Clyde Younger of Blairs; one step-daughter, Shirley Moore of Danville; two sisters, Beatrice Withers of Pelham, N.C., and Louise Anderson of Petersburg; one brother, William Oliver of High Point, N.C.; 12 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.
A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Kentuck Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. Jesse Fitz officiating. Burial will be in Floral Hills Memory Garden.
The family will receive friends at the residence of her son, 1103 Maison Drive, Blairs.

Irma Powell
STUART, Va. - Irma Lavinder Powell, 96, formerly of 171 Cooper St., died Thursday, Nov. 11, 1999, at Blue Ridge Healthcare Center, Stuart.
Born Feb. 27, 1903, in Franklin County, she was the daughter of John Peter Lavinder and Minnie Frances Young Lavinder.
She was married
July 2, 1921, to Moses J. Powell, who predeceased her March 13, 1988.
She was a member of Moffett Memorial Baptist Church.
Survivors include two daughters, Evelyn B. Smith and Betty Dowdy, both of Danville; two sons, Richard Powell and Norman Powell, both of Hampton; 12 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren and eight great-great-grandchildren.
A graveside service will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Highland Burial Park with the Rev. Lee Ellison officiating.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Friday at Townes Funeral Home.
Richard Shumate
DANVILLE, Va. - Richard Lee Shumate, 91, of 180 Riverbend Road, died Wednesday, Nov. 10, 1999, at Stratford Health Care Center.
Born May 11, 1908, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of Luther F. Shumate and Emma Bartee Shumate Hunt.
He married
Dollie Turner Shumate, who survives, on Oct. 6, 1932.
He lived his life in Danville and was retired from Barkhouser Motors as an auto technician.
He was a member of Stokesland Baptist Church where he served as deacon and usher.
He was also a member of Andrew Bible Class.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include three sons, Richard L. Shumate Jr. and R. Stanley Shumate, both of Danville and Clyde A. Shumate of Ridgeway; one sister, Pearl Clark of Pelham, N.C.; three grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, two step-grandchildren and three step-great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by one son, Sterling Shumate; a sister, Ruth Strader; and a one brother Howard Shumate.
A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at Stokesland Baptist Church with the Rev. John Warner officiating. Burial will be in Shumate Family cemetery, Riverbend Road, Danville.

Hazel Tennant
CENTERVILLE, W.Va. - Hazel H. Tennant, age 93, of Centerville, formerly of Danville, Va., died Wednesday, Nov. 10, 1999.
She graduated from Davis & Elkins College, Elkins, W.Va. Hazel retired from George Washington High School in Danville, Virginia, where she was a schoolteacher. She was a member of Mount Vernon United Methodist Church in Danville, Va.
preceded in death by her husband, Leslie M. in 1972.
Survived by a son, Lawrence and his wife, Linda of Springboro, OH; a daughter, Martha Peters of Roanoke, VA; two grandsons, John D. Tennant and wife Fran, and William Michael Tennant and wife Annette, all of Charlotte, N.C.; 2 granddaughters, Leigh Anne Tennant of Springboro, OH and Michelle Wead of Roanoke, VA; and 4 great grandchildren, Ashley and Nicholas Tennant, Tayler Tennant and Emily Wead.
A graveside service will be held at 11:00 A.M., Monday, November 15, at Danville Memorial Gardens cemetery in Danville, VA, with the Rev. Jay Ashby officiating.

VIRGILINA, Va. - Cecil Bernard Wilkins, 86, of 1021 Seventh St., died Thursday, Nov. 11, 1999, at his residence.
Born Aug. 21, 1913, in Williamson, W.Va., he was the son of Jack Wilkins and Helen McGonnel Wilkins.
He married
Frances Chandler Wilkins, who predeceased him.
He was a retired tobacconist and a member of Virgilina Masonic Lodge No. 248.
He was also a member of Union United Church of Christ.
Survivors include two daughters, Mary Helen Gravitt of Virgilina and Mary Lou Chandler Boal of Madisonville, Ky.; one son, William R. Wilkins of Virgilina; one sister, Magdalene Reese of South Boston; eight grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
A funeral will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Union United Church of Christ with the Rev. Harvey Carnes officiating. Burial will be in Virgilina cemetery.

DANVILLE, Va.- Virginia F. Wilson, 90, formerly of Pine Street and Paxton Street, died Wednesday, Nov. 10, 1999, at Manor Care in Richmond.
Born Feb. 7, 1909, in Danville, she was the daughter of Fred W. Farley and Ella Shelton Davis Farley.
Survivors include three daughters, Anne Bonne, Ella "Petey" Terrill and Louise McAlister; four sons, Clarence H. Wilson Jr., Fred F. Wilson, W. Glen Wilson and Robert Andrew Wilson; 18 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.
A funeral will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Townes Memorial Chapel with the Rev. George Neas officiating.
Burial will be in Mountain View cemetery.
