Edgar Cook
DANVILLE, Va. - Edgar Willie Cook, 73, of 646 Elizabeth St., died Friday, Nov. 12, 1999, at Danville Regional Medical Center in serious condition for the past two days.
Born June 18, 1926, in Caswell County, N.C., he was the son of Willie Monroe Cook and Loufanny Durham Cook.
He married
Jean Thompson Cook, who survives.
He was a veteran of the United States Army and spent most of his life in Danville. He worked for many years in the maintenance department of Dan River Inc. until he retired in 1985, on disability. He attended Pleasant View Baptist Church before becoming disabled.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include two daughters, Debbie Burton of Danville and Dora Myers of Pelham, N.C.; two sons, Danny Cook of Danville and Mark Cook of Vernon Hill; two sisters, Hazel Pruitt of Pelham and Stella Harold of Woodbridge; two brothers, Thomas Wayne Cook and Houston Cook, both of Pelham; and four grandchildren.
A funeral will be 2 p.m. Monday at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Gilmore Hundley and the Rev. Lawrence Morris officiating. Burial will be in Schoolfield cemetery.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home and at other times at the residence.
Helen Davis
EVANSTON, Ill. - Helen Helena Davis, 63, of 1301 Burmmel Ave., died Tuesday, Nov. 9, 1999, at St. Frances Hospital in Illinois.
Born Aug. 30, 1936, in Danville, Va., she was the daughter of Obery Davis and Anna King Davis, both of whom survive.
In addition to her parents of Danville, survivors include one daughter, Darlene Davis of Evanston, Ill; four sons, Jeff Davis of Chicago, Kenneth Davis, Gary Davis and Thomas Lee Davis, all of Danville; three sisters, Frances Venable, Catherine Thomas and Nell Whitehead, all of Danville; four brothers, Dannell Davis, Michael Davis, Hubert Davis, all of Danville and Percy Lee Davis of Chicago.
A funeral will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Kentuck Baptist Church with the Rev. Jesse Fitz officiating. Interment
will be in Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends 6-8 p.m. Saturday at Fisher and Watkins Funeral Home and at other times at the residence of her son, Kenneth Davis, 1556 Fall Creek Road.
Clarence Gilley
DANVILLE, Va. - Clarence Walter Gilley, 80, of 4148 Stony Mill Road, died Thursday, Nov. 11, 1999, at his residence.
Born July 31, 1919, in Cascade, he was the son of Bruce M. Gilley and Evie T. Gilley.
He married
Virginia J. Gilley, who survives.
He was retired from E.I. DuPont, Inc. with 29 years of service. He was a veteran of the United States Army serving during World War II receiving the Purple Heart, Sicilian Campaign and Italian Campaign Medal, the Oak Leaf Cluster and two battle stars Eame Service Ribbon. He was a member of Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church, the DAV, VFW American Legion, Young at Heart Club, St. John's United Methodist Church and the Fishermans Club.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include one daughter, Mary Joan Gilley Lewis of Burke; one son, Clarence W. Gilley Jr. (C.W.) of Liberty Lake, Wash.; two brothers, Herman Gilley of Axton, and J.M. Gilley of Bedford, Texas; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by one sister, Viola G. Monroe; and one brother, Marvin Gilley.
A funeral will be 2:30 p.m. Sunday at Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church with the Rev. James R. Maddox officiating. Interment
will be in Roselawn Burial Park with full military honors.
The family will receive friends one hour prior to service at the church and at other times at the residence.

William "Bill" Hall
DANVILLE, Va. - William H. "Bill" Hall, 86, of 268 West Main Street, died Wednesday at the Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Sept. 27, 1913, he was the son of Thomas Neely Hall and Lissie McCorkle Hall, of Charlotte, N.C. He was the last of three brothers and four sisters of the family.
He married
Josephine Williams Hall, who survives.
He was a member of West Main Baptist Church.
He served in the United States Army serving during World War II, inducted as a private in the 1940s first draft and discharged in 1947, as a captain in the United States Army (AUS). After his discharge he was employed in Paris from 1947 to 1950, by the State Department. He returned to the United States and became self-employed while attended George Washington University. Upon graduation from college in 1952, he worked for the Navy's Bureau of Aeronauts as a budget analyst until his full retirment in 1976.
A graveside service will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Mountain View cemetery with the Rev. Bruce Wilson officiating. American Legion Post 325 will provide full military honors.
The family will receive friends at the residence.

Earnest Hill
SPENCER, Va. - Earnest William Hill, 53, of 178 New Well Drive, died Thursday, Nov. 11, 1999, at Roanoke Memorial Hospital where he stayed for one week.
Born Sept. 24, 1946, in Danville, Va., he was the son of Richard Bernard Hill and Wilsie Ferguson Hill.
He was married
Feb. 16, 1967 to Nancy Pruitt Hill, who survives.
He resided in Danville most of his life moving to Spencer, in 1985. He owned and operated Earnies Tile and Etc. Home Improvement Co. He was of the Baptist faith.
He was member of the U.S. Navy.
In addition to his wife, survivors include one son, Earnest William Hill Jr. of Grottoes, Va.; one daughter, Tammy H. Allen of Axton; one brother, Richard Bernard Hill Jr. of Danville. A funeral will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel with the Rev. Carl E. Burger officiating. Burial will be in Floral Hills Memory Garden.
The family will receive friends at other times at the residence of Mike Hill, 1833 John Drive, Mount Hermon Community.
Ethel Horsley
DANVILLE, Va. - Ethel Hammock Horsley, 94, of 281 Flamingo Road, died Thursday, Nov. 11, 1999, at Danville Regional Medical Center after a two-week stay and six weeks of declining health.
Born Oct. 20, 1905, in Franklin County, she was the daughter of Ben Hammock and Mary Hodges Hammock.
She married
Andrew J. Horsley who predeceased her July 1971.
She lived all of her life in Franklin and Pittsylvania County where she was a homemaker. She was of the Brethren Faith.
Survivors include two sons, Benjamin "Ben" P. Horsley of Dry Fork and Carlton W. Horsley of Gastonia, N.C.; six daughters, Frances L. Horsley of Morristown, N.J., Clara H. Meadows and Dorothy Horsely, both of Richmond, Sallie H. Harlow of Danville, and Mildred H. Cousins of Callands, and Lizzie H. Willis of Dry Fork; 17 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.
She was the last survivors of her immediate family.
She was predeceased by two sons, David Horsley and Irvin Horsley.
A graveside service will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Boones Chapel Church of The Brethren cemetery at Snow Creek, with the Rev. Mike Hearp.
The family will receive friends 4-5:30 p.m. Saturday at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel.
Olandus O.J. Jones
DRY FORK, Va. - Olandus O.J. Jones, 65, of 6528 Dry Fork Road, died Thursday, Nov. 11, 1999, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Jan. 3, 1934, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of the late Charlie Dickerson and Mrs. Mattie Jones Womack, who survive. He was the step-son of Welford C. Womack, who survive.
He married
Lizzie Jones, who also survive.
He was a retired employee of Stanley Furniture Co. of Stanley Town, and was a member of Callands Baptist Church.
In addition to his mother of Star Route, Chatham, stepfather of Chatham, and wife of the residence, survivors include three sons, Nelson Jones of the residence, Milton Jones of Danville and Clevester Jones of Germantown, Md.; two daughters, Ethel Thompson of Danville and Cozetta Gaines of Greensboro, N.C.; one sister, Lillian Akers of Martinsville; and four grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a son, Paul Jones.
There will be a viewing one hour prior to the funeral sevice at Callands Baptist Church.
A funeral will be 2:30 p.m. Sunday at the church with the Rev. Obadele St. George officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Mary Moorefield
DANVILLE, Va. - Mrs. Mary Frances Oliver Younger Moorefield, 83, of 440 Wilkerson Road, Danville, Va., died Tuesday, November 9, 1999, at the Stratford Health Care Center.
She was born March 4, 1916, in Pittsylvania County, Va. She was the daughter of Will Oliver and Josephine Oliver.
She was married
to Willie Martin Younger who predeceased her and later married
Garnet Moorefield, who also predeceased her.
Mrs. Moorefield was employed with Belk Leggett for many years.
Survivors include one son, Clyde Younger of Blairs; one step-daughter, Shirley Moore of Danville, Va.; and two sisters, Beatrice Withers of Pelham, N.C. and Louise Anderson of Petersburg, Va.; one brother, William Oliver of High Point, N.C.; one brother-in-law, C.B. Anderson Jr.; three daughters-in-law, Clara Younger of Washington, D.C., Barbara Younger of Blairs, Va. and Catherine Younger of Danville, Va.; twelve grandchildren and a host of great-grandchildren, other relatives and friends.
The family will receive friends at the home of her son, Clyde Younger, 1103 Maison Drive, Blairs, Va.
Funeral service for Mrs. Moorefield will be conducted 2 p.m. Saturday, November 13, 1999, at Kentuck Missionary Baptist Church, Rev. Jesse Fitz Pastor. Interment
will follow at Floral Hills Memory Garden.

Laverna "Bunny" Patterson
DANVILLE, Va. Laverna "Bunny" Harlan Patterson, 92, of 126 West Moreland Court, died Friday, Nov. 12, 1999, at her residence.
Born Aug. 5, 1907, in Dixon, Ill., she was the daughter of Dr. Rolvix Harlan and Margaret Wade Harlan.
She married
Travis Thames Patterson Sr., who predeceased her April 26, 1974.
She was a member of First Baptist Church.
She was a member of the Garden Club, and a former member of the Danville Golf Club and Wednesday Club.
Survivors include two sons, Travis Thames Patterson Jr. of Summerville, S.C., and Rolvix Harlan Patterson of Danville; six grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by one sister, Margaret H. Hilton.
A graveside service will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Mountain View cemetery with the Rev. Joey Faucette officiating.

Christine Pierce
BLAIRS, Va. - Christine "Tina" Pierce, 76, of 5137 U.S. 29 north, died Friday, Nov. 12, 1999, at Danville Regional Medical Center after several years of declining health.
Born Nov. 10, 1923, in Halifax County, she was the daughter of Buster Pierce and Evelyn Nickols Pierce.
She spent most of her life in the Blairs community. She retired in 1977 from Dan River, Inc.
Survivors include one sister, Beatrice Walker of Danville; one brother, Calvin Pierce of Providence, N.C.
A graveside service will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Highland Burial Park with the Rev. Luther Lemon Jr. officiating.

Irma Powell
STUART, Va. - Irma Lavinder Powell, 96, formerly of 171 Cooper St., died Thursday, Nov. 11, 1999, at Blue Ridge Healthcare Center, Stuart.
Born Feb. 27, 1903, in Franklin County, Va., she was the daughter of John Peter Lavinder and Minnie Frances Young Lavinder.
She was married
July 2, 1921, to Moses J. Powell, who predeceased her March 13, 1988. She was a member of Moffett Memorial Baptist Church.
Survivors include two daughters, Evelyn B. Smith and Betty Dowdy, both of Danville; two sons, Richard Powell and Norman Powell, both of Hampton; two sisters, Fairy Brincefield and Norma Mitchell, both of Danville; 12 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren and eight great-great-grandchildren.

Richard Shumate
DANVILLE, Va. - Richard Lee Shumate, 91, of 180 Riverbend Road, died Wednesday, Nov. 10, 1999, at Stratford Health Care Center. Born May 11, 1908, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of Luther F. Shumate and Emma Bartee Shumate Hunt.
He married
on Oct. 6, 1932 to Dollie Turner Shumate, who survives. He lived his life in Danville and was retired from Barkhouser Motors as an auto technician. He was a member of Stokesland Baptist Church where he served as deacon and usher. He was also a member of Andrew Bible Class.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include three sons, Richard L. Shumate Jr. and R. Stanley Shumate, both of Danville and Clyde A. Shumate of Ridgeway; one sister, Pearl Clark of Pelham, N.C.; three grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, two step-grandchildren and three step-great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by one son, Sterling Shumate; two brothers, Lewis Shumate and Howard Shumate; and one sister, Ruth S. Strader.
A funeral was held at 2 p.m. Friday at Stokesland Baptist Church with the Rev. John Warner officiating. Burial was held in Shumate Family cemetery, Riverbend Road, Danville. The family will receive friends at the residence. Wrenn Yeatts North Main Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
