George Samuel Herndon
DANVILLE, Va. - George Samuel Herndon, 92, a former resident of Swansonville, died Sunday, Nov. 14, 1999 at Riverside Health Care Center.
Born March 14, 1907 in Pittsylvania County, Herndon was the son of George Cable Herndon and Annie Elliott Herndon. He was married
to Pearl Wells Herndon, who predeceased him Sept. 19, 1985.
Herndon was a member of the Swansonville United Methodist Church. He served as superintendent for 20 years and performed various other duties in the church.
He is survived by one son, Kenneth C. Herndon of Danville, one daughter, Phyllis H. Allen of Raleigh, N.C., one brother, Richard Herndon of Danville, three sisters, Pearl H. Fuller of Callands, Annie Mae H. Scarce and Elsie H. Adkerson, both of Dry Fork, four grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
A funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday at Townes Memorial Chapel. The Rev. Randy Williams and the Rev. Scott Holcomb-McLain will be conducting the services. Interment
will follow at Highland Burial Park.
The family will be at the residence of the son, Kenneth Herndon, 114 Chilton Court.

Iris Lemmon
NORTH PORT, Fla. - Iris Marie Loftis Lemmon, 68, of 4532 Tollefson Ave., died Saturday, Nov. 13, 1999, at Venice Hospital, Venice.
Born Feb. 23, 1931, in Danville, Va., she was the daughter of the late Otis Loftis and Rosa Loftis.
She married
Robert C. Lemmon, who survives.
She was a homemaker and of the Baptist faith.
In addition to her husband of the residence, survivors include one son, Charles Neal Baumann of St. Petersburg; two sisters, Frances Burns and Betty Jean Higgs, both of Reidsville, N.C.; two brothers, Willie Loftis of Rockingham, N.C., and Glenn Loftis of Reidsville, N.C.; and one grandchild.
She was predeceased by a son, Jimmy Baumann.
A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Tuesday at Swicegood Funeral Home.
Keith William Moss
DANVILLE, Va. - Keith William Moss, 44, of 3708 Westover Drive died Saturday, Nov. 13, 1999 at Durham Regional Medical Center in Durham, N.C. after four months of declining health and four days in the hospital.
Born Nov. 17, 1954, he was a son of Thomas Albert Moss and Lila Strader Moss, who survive. He was married
Jan. 26, 1980 to Patricia "Patti" Atkins Moss of the residence.
Moss lived all of his life in Pittsylvania County and Danville. He was a 1973 graduate of Tunstall High School. Moss was a self-employed antique dealer who owned Moss Antiques. He was a member of Westover Baptist Church, where he served as an usher and was very active in other church activities.
In addition to his wife and parents, who live in Danville, Moss is survived by two daughters, Nikki Nicole Moss and Melissa Ann Moss, both of the residence, and a sister, Dyan Moss Austin of Raleigh, N.C.
A funeral will be held 1 p.m. Tuesday at Westover Baptist Church. The Rev. Dr. Doug Barber and the Rev. Robert Vermillion will officiate. Interment
will follow in the Moss Family cemetery on Vandola Road.
The family will be at the residence, 3708 Westover Drive.

Virginia Oaks
DANVILLE, Va. - Virginia Ann Scott Oaks, 68, died early Sunday, Nov. 14, 1999 at Stratford Health Care Center in Danville.
Born in Hopkinsville, Ky., Oaks was the daughter of the late Lee Andrew Scott and Lois Shaw Scott. She graduated from Barret High School in Henderson, Ky. and the University of Evansville in Evansville, Ind. She was a member of Sigma Alpha Iota music fraternity.
Oaks taught in Illinois, Indiana and Kentucky before moving with her husband when his job took him to the Washington area. They lived in Annandale and near Midland.
Oaks taught junior high school music in Fairfax County Schools. She also directed the choir at Mount Horeb United Methodist Church near Catlett for 17 years.
Soon after her retirement in 1985, Oaks' husband, William D. Oaks died. A few years later she moved to the Danville area. For the last several years she lived near Callands, where she started and was in charge of the Share Food Program in her immediate area.
She was a member of the Swansonville United Methodist Church in Dry Fork and sometimes filled in as a temporary Sunday school teacher.
She is survived by a son, David, and a granddaughter, both of Bealeton. Also surviving are two sisters, Margaret J. Kilgour of Crescent, Okla., and Mary E. Kohlmeyer of Elberfield, Ind.
A funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel, 564 W. Main St. The Rev. Randy Williams will officiate.
A second service will be held in Evansville, Ind., at Alexander East Funeral Home on Lincoln Ave., with burial in Maple Grove cemetery, Boonville, Ind.
Clarence Poythress Sr.
DANVILLE, Va. - Clarence Samuel Poythress Sr., 43, of 632 Oakland Drive, was dead on arrival Sunday, Nov. 14, 1999, at Halifax Regional Hospital, after an automobile accident on 58 East near South Boston.
Born Aug. 8, 1956, in South Boston, he was the son of William Kinborght, who survives, and the late Annie Virginia Poythress.
He married
Linda Riley Poythress, who also survives.
He made his home in the Danville area for 10 years and attended Full Gospel Fellowship Church. He worked for Cron Construction for one year. At the time of his death, he was working with A.S. Pugh Roofing Co., where he worked for the past three months.
In addition to his father of South Boston and wife of the residence, survivors include four sons, Samuel Edward Poythress of the residence, Charles Edward Poythress of Danville, James Paul Poythress of Winchester and Clarence Samuel Poythress Jr. of Goochland. The family will be at the residence

Irvin Otis Taylor, Sr
CHATHAM, Va. - Irvin Otis Taylor, Sr., age 81, of 2076 Brandon Road, Chatham died Monday, November 15, 1999, at his residence.
Born January 23, 1918, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of Chesley Taylor and Mattie Worsham Taylor.
Mr. Taylor was predeceased by his wife Margaret Dalton Taylor and a son Irvin Otis Taylor, Jr.
He was a retired farmer.
He is survived by a daughter and son-in-law Carolyn and Richard Jones of Blairs; a grandson Richard Michael Jones, Jr. of Chatham; two great-grandsons Joshua Justin Jones and Matthew Tyler Jones.
Graveside services will be conducted 3:00 p.m. Wednesday, November 17, 1999, at the Taylor Family cemetery by Rev. Lenn E. Lloyd.
The family will receive friends 7 to 8 p.m. Tuesday evening, at Colbert-Moran Funeral Home.

Walter Beadles
CRYSTAL HILL, Va. - Walter Morell Beadles, 77, of Route 626, died Tuesday, Nov. 16, 1999, at his residence.
Born May 16, 1922, in Halifax County, he was the son of Archer Lee Beadles and Victoria Wesley Beadles Clay. He was the step-son of Jesse James Clay.
He married
Ada Mae Clay Beadles, who survive.
He was a member of Ellis Creek Baptist Church.
In addition to his wife of Crystal Hill, survivors include one daughter, Phyllis Ann Francisco of Nathalie; seven sons, Joey Beadles, Genie Beadles, Danny Lee Beadles, Earl Beadles and Elvis Beadles, all of Crystal Hill, Glen Beadles of Naruna and Kenneth Beadles of Nathalie; one brother, Lacy Beadles of Chase City; one half-sister, Adelle Clay Anderson of Nathalie; 21 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by two sisters, Maggie B. Lane and Louella B. Hancock.
A graveside service will be 2 p.m. Friday at Halifax Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Richard Welch officiating.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Thursday at Powell Funeral Home and at other times at the residence.
Evelyn Blair
FAIRFAX, Va. - Evelyn Mae Blair, 89, died Monday, Nov. 15, 1999, at Fairfax Nursing Center of congestive heart failure.
Born Sept. 11, 1910, she was the daughter of Thomas P. Blair and Ophelia Boaze Blair.
She was a longtime resident of Danville and worked in floral retail sales for 30 years and retired from H. W. Brown Florist in 1982. She was a member of the Fairview United Methodist Church for over 52 years.
She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
She was predeceased by one sister Elizabeth Blair Ashworth.
Survivors include two nieces Edith E. Ashwood of Oakton and Blair Ashworth McSpadden of Arlington.
A funeral will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at Fairview United Methodist Church with the Rev. O. H. Burton, the Rev. Linwood Daniel and the Rev. Dr. Thomas Evans officiating. Burial will be in Boaze Family cemetery.
The family will receive friends 5-6:30 p.m. Wednesday at Townes Funeral Home Chapel.
Dewey Crews
GRETNA, Va. - Dewey Rodgers Crews, age 70, of 1024 Harmony Road, Gretna, Virginia died Monday, November 15, 1999, at the Virginia Baptist Hospital in Lynchburg.
Mr. Crews was born June 29, 1929, inPittsylvania Co.,Virginia. He was the son of the late I. Swanson Crews and Mamie Creasey Crews. He is survived by his wife, Frances Jennings Crews of the residence; four sons, Steve R. Crews of Chatham, Wayne L. Crews of Amherst, Brian D. Crews, and Kenneth N. Crews, both of Gretna; two brothers Holland L. Crews and Billy T. Crews, both of Chatham; one sister, Lois C. Barbour of Chatham. Ten grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
He was a member of Straightstone Baptist Church and a retired farmer.
Funeral services will be conducted Thursday, November 18, 1999, at 2:00 p.m. from the Scott Funeral Home Chapel by Rev. Burt Johnson and Rev. James Manuel. Interment
will be in the Hillcrest Burial Park in Chatham. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday November 17, 1999 at Scott Funeral Home and at other times will be at the residence 1024 Harmony Road, Gretna, VA.

Virginia Eldridge
DANVILLE, Va. - Virginia Dare Blankin Eldridge, 73, of 18 Augusta Ave., died Monday, Nov. 15, 1999, at her residence after five months of declining health.
Born Sept. 18, 1926, in Kings Mountain, N.C., she was the daughter of Walter Blankin and Flora Sword Blankin.
She married
Greer Bowman Eldridge, Oct. 1, 1946, who predeceased her June 30, 1978.
She spent most of her life in Danville. She was a tailor at Saters Mens Shop for many years prior to her retirement. She was a member of Brush Arbor Baptist Church.
Survivors include two daughters, Vivian Annette E. Scruton of Danville and Dianne E. Broyles of Piney Flats, Tenn.; one son, Wesley David Eldridge of Danville; two sisters, June Smith Starcher of Mentor, Ohio, and Mary Blankin Reynolds of Ewing; and five grandchildren.
She was predeceased by two sisters, Evelyn Waters and Juanita Duncanson; and one brother, J.H. Blankin.
A funeral will be 8 p.m. Wednesday at Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel with the Rev. Stephen Lamb, The Rev. Billy Scearce and the Rev. J.B. Baldridge officiating. Burial will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Flower Gap cemetery, Blackwater, Va.

Nolan Green
DANVILLE, Va. - Nolan Green, 64, of 920 Luna Lake Road, died unexpectedly at Danville Regional Medical Center on Nov. 13, 1999.
Born March 2, 1935, in Charlotte County, he was the son of the late Edward Green and Mabel Green Shores.
He was the beloved husband of Shirley Lee Green, of the residence.
He was a member of the Druid Hills Congregation of Jehovah's Witnesses. He was retired from Reynolds Metals Co., of Reidsville, N.C.
He was the beloved father of five children, two sons, Lee Green of Pelham, N.C., and Paul Green of Milton, N.C., and three daughters, Debbie Fields and Melissa Adams of Gretna and Melinda Cells of Turnersville, N.J. He was the beloved Pa-Pa of 7 grandchildren: Jeremy, Tiffany, Jason, Sheri, Jacob, Alan and Brandon.
Survivors include one brother, Lawrence Shores of Drakes Branch, VA.; three sisters, Ruby Midcift of Danville, VA., Margaret Kelehar of Drakes Branch, VA., and Barbara Langford of Amelia, VA.
He was predeceased by two brothers, Sonny Green and George Shores.
A memorial will be held Saturday, November 20th at 2:00 p.m. at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses on 300 Terry Avenue. Memorial services will be conducted by Morgan Chewning. A private interment was held at Mountain View cemetery. Vaughn-Guynn is in charge of arrangements.
