Raymond ‘Humpy' Phelps

CASCADE, Va. - Raymond "Humpy" Ira Phelps, 69, of 680 Blackbird Place in the West Fork community, died Wednesday, April 17, 2002, at Danville Regional Medical Center in Danville.

Born Aug. 5, 1932, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of Walker Phelps and Callie Wilson Phelps.

He was married to Carrie Phelps, who survives. He worked as a truck driver for the city of Danville for 21 years, prior to his retirement at the age of 62. He was a member of Sheldon Baptist Church and had been in declining health since 1996 and a patient in the hospital several times.

Survivors, in addition to his wife, include two sisters, Della McDaniel of Cascade and Josephine Beverly of Danville, and three brothers, Robert Phelps of Cascade and Johnny Phelps and Burton Phelps, both of Danville; and a number of nieces and nephews.

The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Kenneth Hall officiating. Interment will follow at Danville Memorial Gardens.

The family received friends from 7-8:30 p.m. Friday at Swicegood Funeral Home and will receive friends at other times at the residence.

Swicegood Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Jeffrey Pritchett

DANVILLE, Va. - Jeffrey Dean Pritchett, 39, of 364 Willow Briar Lane, died Thursday, April 18, 2002 in Danville.

Born Sept. 22, 1962 in Danville, he was a son of Ray Harvey Pritchett, who predeceased him, and Ocie Pritchett Wadford, who survives.

He lived most of his life in Danville and owned and operated a vinyl siding business. He was of the Baptist faith.

Survivors, in addition to his mother of Danville, include two stepfathers, Wayne Wadford of Danville and Tony Adkins of Eden, N.C.; one stepmother, Gayle Adkins of Eden, N.C.; three sons, Holden Wayne Pritchett and Michael Ray Pritchett, both of Danville, and Journy Snead of Pelham, N.C.; one brother, Michael Wayne Pritchett of Danville; and one sister, Donna Pritchett Craddock of Danville.

He was predeceased, in addition to his father, by two sisters, Sherry Pritchett and Vicky Pritchett.

The graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at Danville Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Harold Kistler officiating.

The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 p.m. Sunday at Swicegood Funeral Home and at other times at the residence of his mother and stepfather, 28 Oak Ridge Ave.

Tiffany Williams

SUTHERLIN, Va. - Tiffany Nicole Williams, 26, of 3055 Hackberry Road, died Wednesday, April 17, 2002 at Danville Regional Medical Center in Danville.

Born March 16, 1976 in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of Leonard C. Williams and Virginia L. Oliver Williams, who survive.

She was a member of White Stone Pentecostal Holiness Church.

Survivors, in addition to her parents, include four sisters, Cordelia V. Jeffers, Tonya L. Williams and Tracey Bethel, all of Danville, and Demetrius R. Williams of Sutherlin.

The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at White Stone Pentecostal Holiness Church with Evangelist Gloria Cameron officiating. Interment will follow at the church cemetery.

A viewing will be held from 4-8 p.m. Saturday at Beavers Funeral Home. The family will receive friends at the residence.

Professional services are entrusted to Beavers Funeral Home.

Elizabeth Nichols Bray

DANVILLE, Va. - Elizabeth Nichols Bray, 77, formerly of 156 Forestdale Drive, Apt. 204, died Thursday, Jan. 9, 2003, at Roman Eagle Memorial Home.

Born Aug. 20, 1925, in Caswell County, N.C., she was the daughter of Ernest G. Nichols and Louise Ferguson Nichols Shelton, who predeceased her.

She was a charter member of North Main Baptist Church, where she was a choir member, Sunday School secretary, member of the Joy Sunday School Class and on numerous church committees.

She had worked as bookkeeper for Animal Medical Center.

She was married to Clyde "Jim" Bray on July 4, 1940. He predeceased her on Jan. 22, 1995.

She is survived by one son, Ernest Bray of Danville; one sister, Peggy Jones of Danville and one grandson, Randy Bray, of Burlington, N.C.

In addition to her parents and her husband, she was predeceased by one brother, Albert Nichols; one sister, Page N. Smith and a stepfather, Hugh Shelton.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Saturday at North Main Baptist Church with Dr. Leroy Clack and the Rev. Louis Wall officiating. Interment will follow in Danville Memorial Gardens.

The family will be at the residence of her son, 1740 Hunting Hills Road, Mount Hermon community.

The family suggests in lieu of flowers memorials be made to North Main Baptist Church, 2818 N. Main Street, Danville, VA 24540 or to Mt. Hermon Volunteer Fire Dept., 4268 Franklin Turnpike, Danville, VA 24540.

Bernard O. Burgess Sr.

DANVILLE, Va. - Bernard O. Burgess Sr., 74, formerly of 606 Worsham St., died Friday, Jan. 10, 2003, at Roman Eagle Memorial Home. He had been a patient at Roman Eagle since September 2001.

Born Oct. 12, 1928, in Surry County, he was the son of Waverly L. Burgess and Wilma King Burgess, both deceased.

He lived most of his life in Danville. He retired from Plumbing & Mill and also from Fiberglass Tub Repair. Prior to that, he worked for Coca-Cola. He was a member of Riveroak Church of God, Improved Order of Redmen, Poquison Tribe #124, a Past Master of the Masons and was formerly on the Board of Directors at Roman Eagle Memorial Home.

He was a veteran having served four years in the U.S. Marines.

He was the last surviving member of his generation.

He was married to Ruth Duncan Burgess, who survives.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by a daughter-in-law, Sue Burgess of Burlington, N.C. and two grandchildren, Amy Burgess and Amanda Burgess.

He was predeceased by a son, Bernard O. Burgess II.

The funeral will be held 11 a.m. Monday at the Swicegood Chapel with the Rev. Ellis Nuckles officiating. Interment will be in Floral Hills Memorial Gardens.

The family will receive friends 10-11 a.m. prior to the service at Swicegood Funeral Home.

Patsy Johns Donahue

DANVILLE, Va. - Patsy Johns Donahue, 60, of 336 Rosemary Lane, died Thursday, Jan. 9, 2003, at her residence, after being in declining health for the past nine months.

Born May 28, 1942, in Danville, she was the daughter of Norman Johns and Annie Johns Jordan, who survives.

She lived all her life in Danville and attended George Washington High School.

She was of the Baptist faith.

She was married to Gene E. Donahue on Aug. 19, 1960.

In addition to her husband, of the residence, and her mother, of Danville, she is survived by two sons, Jerry Donahue of Charlotte, N.C. and Troy Donahue of Mt. Airy, N.C.; a brother, William Johns; a sister, Barbara Walker, both of Danville and three grandchildren.

The funeral will be held at 4 p.m. Saturday at Swicegood Chapel, with the Rev. Carl E. Burger officiating. Interment will follow in Mountain View Cemetery.

The family will be at the residence.

Doris Oakes Minter Grizzel

SANDY LEVEL, Va. - Doris Oakes Minter Grizzel, age 87, of 13692 West Gretna Road, died Friday, January 10, 2003, at Autumn Care of Altavista.

Born November 23, 1915, in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of the late Rev. J.H. Oakes and Nora Mattox Oakes.

She was twice married, first to the late Obie Minter and then to the late E.W. Grizzel.

Mrs. Grizzel was predeceased by a son, Dr. Obie James Minter and two brothers, Bennett Oakes and Ray Oakes.

She was a member of Museville Christian Church, a member of the Christian Women's Association, a member of the Climax Ruritan Club and a homemaker.

She is survived by a son, Carlton R. Minter and his wife, Nancy, of Richmond; a daughter, Dianne M. Towler and her husband, Dwight, of Virginia Beach; three brothers, James Oakes of Chatham, Edward Oakes of Chatham and Samuel Oakes of Penhook; three sisters, Clarice Oakes of Chatham, Ruby Carter of Penhook and Lois Stegall of Hurt; and three grandchildren, James Minter, Haley Minter and Michele A. Witcher.

Funeral services will be conducted 2:00 p.m. Monday, January 13, 2003, at Museville Christian Church by Steve Hayes, Minister and Randle K. Johnson, Minister. Interment will follow in Liberty Memorial Cemetery.

The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Sunday evening at Colbert-Moran Funeral Home and other times at the residence, 13692 West Gretna Road, Sandy Level.

The family suggests memorial contributions be made to Museville Christian Church, 112 Victoria Road, Chatham, VA or the Alzheimer's Association, P.O. Box 823, Lynchburg, VA 24505.

Fletcher D. Harris

DANVILLE, Va. - Fletcher D. Harris, 74, of 406 Downing Drive, died Friday, January 10, 2003, at his residence after several months of declining health.

Born February 2, 1928, in Weldon, N.C., he was the son of Joseph M. Harris and Claudia Newman Harris.

He was a member of Fairview United Methodist Church. He graduated from Benjamin Franklin University (now George Washington University) in 1949. He passed the CPA Exam in 1951 and opened his office. After 51 years, he retired from Harris, Harvey, Neal & Co.

He also served in the Army Transport Service in 1945-46.

He served on City Council for four years and as chairman of the finance committee for two years. He was past president of the Danville Jaycees and past treasurer of Virginia Jaycees. He served on the Board of Virginia Society of CPAs and as President. He was appointed to the State Board of Accountancy by Gov. John Dalton, serving two years as chairman.

He was a former member of Danville Sertoma, past governor of the Moose Lodge, member of the Elks Club, 32nd Degree Mason Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite, member of Roman Eagle Lodge #122 A.F. & A.M. He also served as chairman of Piedmont Council of Boy Scouts of America.

In addition, he served on the Board of Directors of Danville Industrial Development, Inc. for 50 years. He also served on the board of directors of Danville Area Development Foundation from its inception.

He was married to Helen Ogburn Harris for 55 years.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by two daughters, Kathleen H. Boltinghouse and her husband, David, of Danville and Ellen H. Johnston and her husband, Lee, of Philadelphia; two grandsons, Micah H. Crane and Benjamin Crane, both of Danville; two brothers, Charles E. Cook and Mike Harris, both of Danville and a number of nephews.

He was predeceased by a brother, Samuel L. Harris.

The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Sunday at Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel with the Rev. Paul Johnson officiating. Interment will be in Highland Burial Park. Masonic Rites will be conducted.

The family will receive friends 2:30-4 p.m. Saturday at Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel and at other times at the residence.

Memorials may be made to the Melanoma Consortium, Duke Medical Center, Box 3966, Durham, NC, or to a favorite charity.

Bessie Louise Rich Howerton

DANVILLE, Va. - Bessie Louise Rich Howerton, 91, of 2526 North Main St., died Friday, Jan. 10, 2003, at Roman Eagle Memorial Home.

Born Sept. 14, 1911, in Graham, N.C., she was the daughter of Will Rich and Julia Owen Rich.

She lived her entire life in the Mount Hermon and Dry Fork communities and was a member of Mount Hermon Baptist Church.

She was married to Melvin A. Howerton, who predeceased her in 1988.

She is survived by four daughters, Mildred H. Emerson of Chester, Stella H. Emerson of Dry Fork, Minnie H. Easley of Chatham and Vivian H. Hall of Danville; four sons, Herbert H. Howerton of Axton, Glenn D. Howerton of Blairs, James W. Howerton of Danville and Charles D. Howerton of Blairs; 34 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by a brother, Vernon Rich, a son, Aubrey Howerton and a daughter, Dorothy Howerton.

The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Sunday at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel with the Rev. Don Davidson officiating. Interment will be in Highland Burial Park.

The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Saturday at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel and at other times at the residence of Vivian Hall, 3457 Franklin Turnpike.

Memorials may be made to Mount Hermon Fire & Rescue, 4268 Franklin Turnpike, Danville, VA 24540 or to the Danville Life Saving Crew, 202 Christopher Lane, Danville, VA 24540.

Blondola Broadnax Jones

DANVILLE, Va. - Blondola Broadnax Jones, 69, of 2275 Robin Hood Drive, died Wednesday, Jan. 8, 2003, at Danville Regional Medical Center.

Born Feb. 7, 1933, in Danville, she was the daughter of John Wallace Broadnax and Mary Eliza Inge.

She worked for Danville Regional Medical Center as a nurse's assistant.

She was a member of St. James Baptist Church, president of the Senior Choir, superintendent of Sunday School and a member of the Women's Adult Class Sunday School. She was also on several committees for the church and Sunday School union, and a past leader of the Buds of Unity Tent #423.

She is survived by two sons, Herbert L. Jones Jr. of the residence and Derrick Broadnax of Danville; two daughters, Evangelist Sandra D. Harris and Janet O. Broadnax, both of Danville; one sister, Alberta Hatchett of Danville; one brother, Christopher Broadnax of East Point, Ga.; eight grandchildren and two step-grandchildren.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Saturday at the Loyal Baptist Church with Pastor Michael E. Harris officiating. Interment will follow in the Oak Hill Cemetery.

A viewing was held Friday at Cunningham & Hughes Funeral Home.

The family will be at the residence.

Raymond Scruggs Saunders

DANVILLE, Va. - Raymond Scruggs Saunders, 82, of 200 Gatewood Ave., died Thursday, Jan. 9, 2003 at Danville Regional Medical Center.

Born June 26, 1920, in Danville, he was the son of James Edward Saunders and Alma Scruggs Saunders.

He lived all his life in Danville and was employed as a painter for John W. Daniels Construction Company prior to his retirement.

He was of the Baptist faith.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving in Germany and France.

He was married to Germaine McMillian Saunders.

In addition to his wife, of the residence, he is survived by one son, James Ray Saunders of Ringgold; one stepdaughter, Patsy Newsome of Lexington, Ky.; one sister, Alma Farthing of Danville and two grandchildren.

The graveside service will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Highland Burial Park with the Rev. Bobby Haynes and the Rev. Lewis Emerson officiating. Military honors will be given by American Legion Dan River Post #1097 Honor Guard.

The family will be at the residence.

Memorials may be sent to the Danville Life Saving Crew, 202 Christopher Lane, Danville, VA.
