David Ragland Jr.
RINGGOLD, Va. - David Lawson Ragland Jr., 96, of 2321 Miller Drive, died Friday, Nov. 19, 1999, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born March 7, 1903, in Danville, he was the son of David Ragland and Mary Stovall Ragland.
He married
Beryl Bird Ragland, who predeceased March 23, 1965.
He attended Washington and Lee University and graduated from the University of Pennsylvania. He was a retired architect having worked for Thompson-Ragland. He was a member of Mount Vernon United Methodist Church.
He was the last surviving member of his immediate family and is survived by several nieces and nephews.
A graveside service will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Highland Burial Park with the Rev. Jay Ashby officiating.

Chester Seifers
DANVILLE, Va. - Chester Willard Seifers, 71, of Corn Tassel Road, died Wednesday, Nov. 17, 1999, at North Carolina Baptist Hospital, Winston Salem, N.C.
Born March 27, 1928, in Jasper County, Newton, Ill., he was the son of Martha Pittman Seifers Carroll, who survives, and the late Gideon Seifers.
He married
Mardell "Marty" Campbell, who also survives.
He was a graduate of the University of Tennessee in Chattanooga with a B.A. in Physics. He worked for IBM in Raleigh, N.C. He retired in 1982, after 27 years of service and moved to Danville in 1989. He served in the United States Air Force during World War II.
In addition to his mother of Newton, N.C. and wife, survivors include two daughters Sharon Mills of Hamilton and Faith Powers of Woodstock, Conn.; five sisters, June, Betty, Ada Mae, Margaret and Nellie; three brothers, Neil, Larry and Robert; five grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at Mount Hermon Baptist Church in Danville.
Cremation Society of Virginia is in charge of arrangements.
Mildred Starkey
DANVILLE, Va. - Mildred Barker Starkey, 82, of 329 Hampton Drive, died Thursday, Nov. 18, 1999, at her residence after several years of declining health.
Born Oct. 22, 1917, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Moses C. Barker and Annie Butcher Barker.
She married
James Thomas Starkey Jan. 26, 1974, who predeceased her Feb. 4, 1998.
She lived most of her life in Danville. Prior to her retirement, she worked as bookkeeper for Nehi Bottling Company and later Hosa Wilson. She was a member of Kentuck Baptist Church and the A.B.W.A.
Survivors include one step-daughter Susan Starkey Dykes of Danville; and one brother, Howe Barker of Ringgold.
In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by two brothers, Edwin C. Barker and Alvis Barker; and one sister, Louise B. Bennett.
A funeral will be held 2 p.m. Sunday at Kentuck Baptist Church with the Rev. Dr. S. Felton Carter and the Rev. Carl Burger officiating. Interment
will be in Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends at the residence of a nephew, J. Wesley Barker, 1804 Wilkerson Road, Ringgold.

Lorenza Withers
DANVILLE, VA. - Lorenza Chesterfield Withers, 84, of 835 Colquohoun St., died Wednesday, Nov. 17, 1999, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Aug. 24, 1915, in Yanceyville, N.C., he was the son of George Withers and Anna Epps Withers.
He married
Nannie Graves Withers, who survives.
He was employed with P. Lorillard Tobacco Co. for many years prior to retirement.
In addition to his wife, survivors include one daughter, Carolyn L. Walton of Danville; one son Lenn Withers of Danville; one sister Annie Mae Wilson of Philadelphia; and one brother, Lewis F. Withers of Danville.
A funeral will be 2 p.m. Monday at Fisher and Watkins Funeral Home Chapel with the Dr. J.P. Griffith Jr. officiating. Burial will be in Oak Hill cemetery.

Oscar Martin
GRETNA, Va. - Oscar Felix Martin, 88, of 168 Valley Road, died Friday, Nov. 19, 1999, in Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born March 25, 1911, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son George Thomas and Roena Toler Martin.
He attended Howard University. He was an Army veteran of World War II.
He was a member of Piney Grove Baptist Church where he served as trustee, treasurer and secretary.
He was a retired employee of Woodrum Lothrop Department store. He was a member of the Judah Masonic Lodge No. 265 of Chatham.
He was predeceased by two brothers, Ordalice Martin and James Martin; and one sister, Beatrice Cora.
Survivors include his wife, Fannie Edwards Martin of the residence; one brother, Russell Martin of Gretna; nine sisters, Ollie M. Elias of Jamestown, N.Y., Gracie M. Adams of Chester, Penn., Lois M. Logan of Worcester, Mass., and Almure M. Davis, Carrie M Whitehead, Roena M. Adams, Louise M. Ward, Willie M. Whitehead and Otelia M. Myers, all of Gretna.
A funeral will be held 1 p.m. Wednesday at Piney Grove Baptist Church with the Rev. Isaac Monroe officiating.

Elder Robert Hairston
CASCADE, Va. - Elder Robert Lee Hairston, 74, of 3817 Cascade Road, died Sunday, Nov. 21, 1999, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Sept. 28, 1925, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of Timothy Hairston and Sallie Adams Hairston.
He married
Doretha Hairston, who survives.
He was a member and former pastor of Assembly Chapel Progressive Primitive Baptist Church and Moderator of Mount Sinia Division of Progressive Primitive Baptist Churches.
In addition to his wife of Cascade, survivors include five sons, Robert G. Hairston, the Rev. Charles E. Hairston, Jerry W. Hairston, Harold J. Hairston and Lawrence J. Hairston, all of Cascade; four daughters, Lucy Hubbard, Malinda K. Hairston and Quezella Hairston, all of Cascade, and Dorothy Price of Stoneville, N.C.; one brother, Ernest Hairston of Camden, N.J.; one sister, Bessie Hairston of Cascade; eight grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
A funeral will be 1 p.m. Wedneday at Assembly Chapel Progressive Primitive Baptist Church with the Elder Lemond Adams officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Williard Hunt
DANVILLE, Va. - Willard E. Hunt, 56, of 1201 Washington St., died Sunday, Nov. 21, 1999, at Martinsville Memorial Hospital, Martinsville.
Born Oct. 31, 1943, in Danville, he was the son of the late Curtis O. Hunt Sr. and J. Alma Hunt, who survives.
He married
Sara Hunt, who also survives.
He was a taxi driver for Danville Taxi Cab Company and was a member of Ebenzer Baptist Church.
In addition to his mother and wife, both of Danville, survivors include two sons, Carl Whipple of Danville and Leanardo Hunt of Newport News; two daughters, Kathy Moreles of Pennsylvania and Angela Whipple of Danville; two brothers and one sister, Curtis O. Hunt Jr. and Wilbur H. Hunt, both of Danville and Marie Fletcher of New York City.
A funeral will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Union Street Baptist Church with the Rev. Paul A. Jackson and the Rev. Samuel Griffith officiating. Interment
will be in Highland Burial Park.

Hessie Hutcherson
DANVILLE, Va. - Hessie Burnett Hutcherson, 85, of 16 Oak Ridge Ave., died Saturday, Nov. 20, 1999, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Feb. 7, 1914, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Jason Osborne and Loula Belle Emerson Burnett.
She lived most of her life in Pittsylvania County; however, she also resided in Maryland and Michigan.
She was of the Baptist faith.
She was married
to George Edward Hutcherson on July 25, 1931. He predeceased her May 30, 1986.
In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by one son, Garnett E. Hutcherson; one grandson, James E. Hutcherson; five brothers, Clayton C. Burnett, Asa D. Burnett, Willie O. Burnett, James P. Burnett and Julian B. Burnett; and one sister, Levada Burnett Allmond.
Survivors include one sister, Elizabeth Burnett Lovelace of Baltimore; one grandson and five great-grandchildren.
A funeral will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday at Barker Funeral Home with the Rev. Daniel Lackey officiating. Interment
will be in Highland Burial Park.

Bessie Love
DANVILLE, Va. - Bessie Neal Love, 90, of 116 Chatlaine Ave., died Saturday, Nov. 20, 1999, at Roman Eagle Nursing Home.
Born April 9, 1909, in Pelham, N.C., she was the daughter of Gene Neal and Aggie Neal.
She married
Ross Love, who predeceased her.
Survivors include one brother, Robert Neal of Danville; two step-sisters, Leola De Jarnette and Lula Lee, both of Danville; and two grandchildren.
A funeral will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at The Disciples of Christ United Holiness Church, Darby Road, with the Rev. William Peerman officiating. Burial will be in Oak Hill cemetery.

Frances Berger Midkiff
GRETNA, Va. - Frances Berger Midkiff, 61, of 709 Fairmont Road, Gretna, died Monday, November 22, 1999, at her residence.
Born September 9, 1938, in Pittsylvania County, Virginia, she was a daughter of the late James Amos Hudson and Bessie Nichols Hudson. She was predeceased by a grandchild Lindsay and a sister Ruby Grantham.
Mrs. Midkiff was a receptionist in the office of Dr. Lester Bond and Dr. Glenn Bond, was a volunteer for Hospice of the Hills, Lynchburg and a home maker. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Gretna where she was active in Care and Share.
She is survived by her husband Ellis Midkiff of the residence; two sons and daughters-in-law, David and Patricia Berger of Lynchburg and Tommy and Tina Berger of Gretna; a daughter and son-in-law, Becky and Paul Shelton of Gretna; one brother Raymond Hudson and his wife, Geraldine of Hurt; three sisters, Annie Lee Roark of South Boston, Virginia Lanier of Hurt, Joyce Moore and her husband Clyde of Gretna. 10 grandchildren, Dustin, Stacey, Michelle, David, Jessica, Andrew, Brandon, James, Rachel and Taylor.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, November 24, 1999, at the First Baptist Church of Gretna by the Rev. Glenn Graves, Rev. W.D. Lilly and Rev. Claude Harrelson. Burial will follow in Greenfield Baptist Church cemetery.
The family will receive friends Tuesday, 7 to 8:30 p.m. at Colbert-Moran Funeral Home and other times at the residence, 709 Fairmont Road, Gretna.
