John Robertson
CHATHAM, Va. - John Linford Robertson, 93, of 740 Wayne Robertson Road, died Monday, Nov. 22, 1999, at the Riverside Health Care Center, Danville.
Born March 29, 1906, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of the late Frank Robertson and Mildred Phillips Robertson.
He married
Ethel Taylor Robertson, who predeceased him. He was of the holiness faith. Survivors include one son, Julian Wayne Robertson of Chatham; one daughter, Mattie R. Jones of Dry Fork; two sisters, Nancy R. Frazier of Tampa, Fla.; and Odell R. Dolley of Montvale.
In addition to his wife, he was predeceased by one son, Archie L. Robertson; and one daughter, Margie R. Shanklin.
A graveside service will be 3 p.m. Wednesday at Highland Burial Park in Danville with the Rev. Gilbert A. Hawks officiating.
The family will receive friends 7:30-8:30 p.m. Tuesday at Scott Funeral Home and at other times at the residence of his son at 740 Wayne Robertson Road, Chatham.

Jesse Smith
DANVILLE, Va. - Jesse Garrett "Red" Smith, 50, of 217 Walnut Road, died Nov. 20, 1999, at his residence after 18 months of declining health.
Born Nov. 5, 1949, in Danville, he was the son of Landon F. Smith and Thelma Williams Smith, who survives.
He lived his life in Pittsylvania County. He graduated from Tunstall High School in 1968 and attended the University of North Carolina at Wilmington on a basketball scholarship. He received a master's in education from Lynchburg College.
He taught math at Blairs Junior High School from 1972 to 1988. He then taught at Tunstall High School until 1998, when he retired due to health related reasons. He coached basketball and was an assistant baseball coach.
He was a member of Westover Baptist Church. He was married
to Donna Peters Smith on May 5, 1973, who survives.
In addition to his wife of the residence and his mother of Axton, survivors include one son, Garrett Spencer Smith of the residence; one daughter, Ashley Wright Smith of the residence; one sister, Susan S. Merchant of Danville; and two brothers, Charles W. Smith of Reidsville, N.C., and David M. Smith of Axton.
He was predeceased by his father and one brother, Landon F. Smith Jr.
A funeral will be held 1 p.m. Tuesday at Westover Baptist Church with the Rev. Doug Barber and the Rev. Robert Vermillion officiating. Burial will be in Danville Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Monday at Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel and at other times at the residence.
Ethel McGuire
DANVILLE, Va. - Ethel Grant McGuire, 71, of Yanceyville, N.C., died Wednesday, Nov. 24, 1999, at Moses H. Cone Memorial Hospital in Greensboro, N.C.
She was born in Newton County, Georgia.
She was a homemaker who lived in Caswell County for 52 years and member of Yanceyville Baptist Church. She was predeceased by her husband, William Franklin McGuire in 1986.
She is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, Skip and Margaret Rowland of Pelham, N.C; one sister, Ollie Sams of Covington, Ga., and two grandsons, Grant Rowland and Mark Rowland, both of Pelham, N.C.
A graveside service will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Yanceyville Baptist cemetery.
There will be no formal visitation, but the family will receive friends at the residence of the son, Skip Rowland, 3233 Allison Road, Pelham, N.C.

Barbara Morris
DANVILLE, Va. - Barbara Ann Williams Morris, 56, of 9681 Martinsville Highway, died unexpectedly Wednesday morning, Nov. 24, 1999 at Danville Regional Medical Center after a one-day stay in the hospital.
Born Aug. 10, 1943, in Danville, she was the daughter of Henry Williams and Gladys Cooper Williams, who both survive her.
She was married
to Alton G. Morris, who survives.
She made her home in Danville most of her life before moving to the Bachelor's Hall community of Pittsylvania County 20 years ago.
She was a homemaker and a member of Calvary Baptist Church on Edgewood Drive.
In addition to her husband of the residence and her mother and father of Ringgold, she is survived by one son, Alton Todd Morris of the residence; one brother, Kenneth Williams of Danville and two grandchildren.
The funeral will be held 11 a.m. Saturday at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. J. Richard Markham officiating. Interment
will follow at Danville Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends 7 to 8:30 p.m. Friday evening at the funeral home and other times at the residence of her mother and brother, at 10849 Franklin Turnpike in Dry Fork.
Mildred Price
DANVILLE, Va. - Mildred Smith Price, 83, of 422 Bradley Road in Danville died Friday, Nov. 19, 1999 at Piney Forest Health Care Center.
Born April 8, 1916 in Danville, she was the daughter of Thomas and Cora Chavis Smith.
She was a member of Camp Grove Baptist Church.
She is survived by one daughter, Barbara S. Banks of Philidelphia; two sisters, Gladiola Bailey of Philidelphia, and Doris S. Banks of Danville; one brother, Thomas Smith of Danville; two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be held 11 a.m. Friday at L.H. Brooks and Brothers Funeral Chapel with the Rev. W. J. Toomer officiating.
Interment will be at Floral Hills Memory Gardens.
The family will recieve friends at the residence.
Mattie Purgason
DANVILLE, Va. - Mattie Clyde Purgason, 77, formerly of 18 Selma Ave., died Tuesday, Nov. 23, 1999, at Danville Regional Medical Center. She had resided at Riverside Health Care Center for the past five years.
Born March 12, 1922, in Danville, she was the daughter of William Purgason and Alice Cumbie Purgason.
She lived in Danville all of her life and was a member of Schoolfield Baptist Church.
She retired in 1986, from Dan River Inc. and was a member of Dan River Retired Worker's Club.
Survivors include one brother, Herman Purgason of Lopoc, Calif.; three sisters, Zettie Bingham of Altavista, Hallie Martin and Nannie Eanes, both of Danville.
She was predeceased by two brothers, Norman Purgason and Garnett Purgason.
A graveside service was 2 p.m. Wednesday at Highland Burial Park with the Rev. David R. Turbyfill officiating.
The family will receive friends at the residence of her sister, Nannie Eanes, 50 Selma Ave.

Lawrence Roberts
DANVILLE, Va. - Lawrence Edward Roberts, 74, of 219 Westview Drive died Tuesday, Nov. 23, 1999 at his residence after three years of declinging health.
Born April 19, 1925, in Danville, he was the son of Wister Bryant Roberts and Mary Davis Roberts.
He married
Helen Dodson Roberts on June 24, 1948. She survives him.
He lived all his life in Pittsylvania County and Danville.
He served with the U.S. Navy during World War II.
He was retired from Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. with 20 years of service where he worked as a forklift operator.
He was also a charter member of North Main Baptist Church where he had served as a trustee for 35 years, as an usher and on the building and grounds committee.
In addition to the wife of the residence, he is survived by one son, Ray Edward Roberts of Greensboro, N.C.; one daughter, Dale R. Branch of Danville; two brothers, Marvin Roberts of Danville and Martin Roberts of Fayetteville, N.C.; two sisters, Kary R. Whitt and Faye R Pyrtle, both of Ringgold and three grandchildren.
The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Friday from the North Main Street Baptist Church with the Rev. Dr. Eddie Dave and Rev. Kyle Flora officiating.
Interment will be at Danville Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Street Chapel and other times at the residence.
Robert "Pete" Robertson
DANVILLE, Va. - Robert "Pete" Mose Robertson, 57, of 245 Winston Circle, died Tuesday morning, Nov. 23, 1999, at his residence after a five-year decline in health.
Born April 4, 1942, in Danville, he was the son of Dink Robertson and Lois Newby Robertson.
He married
Laura Hooker Robertson, who survives.
He worked in Charlotte, N.C. as an electrician before working for seven years at Wise-Hundley Electric Company, Inc.
He was of the Baptist faith and lived in Danville all of his life.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include one daughter, Karen Robertson Fillion of Danville; two sons, Michael Robertson of Texas and Earl Hooker of Lake Charles, La.; four sisters, Linda Barbour, Shirley Clay, Nancy Gammon and Joyce Pyron, all of Danville; one brother, Charles Robertson of Danville; and four grandchildren.
A funeral will be held 2 p.m. Friday at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Daryl Joyce officiating.
Burial will be in Hooker Family cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the residence.
Beth Humphries Rowsey
DANVILLE, Va. - Edith Elizabeth Humphries Rowsey, 47, of 229 Riveroak Drive, died Sunday, Nov. 21 at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Oct. 1, 1952, she was a daughter of James "Pat" and Mae Snead Humphries.
She was married
to David Rowsey April 30, 1998, who survives.
She lived in Danville, Richmond and New Jersey.
She was employed in the Danville area as a licensed practical nurse with Commonwealth Home Nursing and Hospice Inc.
She attended Blessed Hope Baptist Church.
In addition to her husband of the residence, survivors include a sister, Susan Humphries Kerr of Pennsville, N.J.; and a brother, Clayton Bowen of Mineral, Va.
Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Thursday at Wrenn-Yeatts Funeral Home Westover Chapel, with the Rev. Brian Edwards officiating.
Burial will follow in Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends at the residence.
Ethel Ward
DANVILLE, Va. - Ethel Price Ward, 97, of The Oaks at Richfield, 3706 Knollridge Road in Salem died Tuesday, Nov. 23, 1999 at Lewis Gale Hospital in Salem after a 10-day illness.
Born in Nov. 24 1901 in Elba, Ala., she was the daughter of George Price and Mary Ella Jay Price.
She was predeceased by her husband, Burt L. Ward, who died in 1957.
She made her home in Salem for the last five years.
She spent most of her life in Danville where she retired in 1957 from Dan River and was a member of Firview United Methodist Church. She was the last member of her generation of the family.
Survivors include two daughters, Marie W. Woody of Roanoke, and Bertra W. Bolden of Greensboro, N.C. and four grandchildren and eight great grandchildren.
Graveside funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Danville Memorial Gardens, with the Rev. Thomas Evans and Rev. Dr. Jeffrey D. Wilson.
