Fred Barker

DANVILLE, Va. - Fred W. Barker, 78, of 13 Brown Lane in Westover Hills, died Wednesday, November 24, 1999, at Danville Regional Medical Center after a decline in health for the past month.

Born May 10, 1921, in the Boxwood Community of Henry County, he was the son of Reese Webster Barker and Alfra Barker Barker.

He had lived in Danville for the past 50 years and was top alignment specialist with Smith-Davis Tire Co. for the past 20 years, and retired at age 65. He attended Woodlawn Baptist Church and was a member of the Fellowship Bible Class.

He married Kathleen Hine Barker in May 1945.

In addition to his wife of the residence, he is survived by three sisters, Jessie B. Wilson and Lucille B. Roach, both of Axton, and Violet B. Newcomb of Martinsville; and one brother, Ray W. Barker of Martinsville.

The funeral will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel, with the Rev. William Blalock officiating. Burial will follow in Highland Burial Park.

The family will receive friends Friday from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at Swicegood Funeral Home and other times at the residence on Brown Lane.

Curtis Brandon

ALTON, Va. - Curtis Darnell Brandon, 61, of 3069 Mason Chapel Road in Alton, died Sunday, Nov. 21, 1999, at Halifax Regional Hospital.

Born Oct. 31, 1938, in Halifax County, he was the son of Royal D. Brandon and Eunice B. Brandon.

He was married to Eliose B. Brandon, who survives him.

He was a member of the Mason Chapel Baptist Church.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by two daughters, Michele Hairston and Pamela Chandler, of Alton; four sisters Lucy Woods, of Inglewood, Calif., Anne Mae Richmond of Milton, N.C., Helen Richmond of Silver Springs, Md., and Carolyn Taylor of Roanoke; two brothers, Royal Brandon and William Brandon of Alton; one father-in-law, Luther Boose, one sister-in-law, Jeanne Briscoe; one brother-in-law, Calvin Cheeks, Sr. and two grandchildren.

The funeral will be held Saturday at 1 p.m. at the Mason Chapel Baptist Church with the Rev. Ronal Claiborne officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends from Friday at 7 p.m.-8 p.m. at the Mason Chapel Baptist Church.

Jefferess Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Mary Ann Brooks

DANVILLE, Va. - Mary Ann Ziebarth Brooks, 62, of 2365 Franklin Turnpike, died Tuesday, Nov. 23, 1999, at her residence.

Born Sept. 12, 1937, in San Diego, she was the daughter of Elmer Clarence Ziebarth and Nellie Elvira Davis Ziebarth.

She was married April 20, 1974, to William Woodbridge Brooks, who survives.

She was a member of Dayspring Community Church and was employed at Pluma in Chatham.

In addition to her husband of the residence, survivors include five sons, John R. Rumley of Greensboro, N.C., Jim A. Rumley and Paul E. Rumley, both of Brown Summit, N.C., Frederick P. Rumley of Georgetown, Texas and Mark A. Rumley of Archdale, N.C.; one daughter, Daisy R. Adams of Greensboro, N.C.; one stepson William H. Brooks of North Carolina; three stepdaughters, Ruth J. Caswell, Wanda B. Tompkins and Wendy F. Earles, all of Blairs; two sisters, Carol Wright and Vivian Ziebarth; 30 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by two brothers, Clarence Vernon Ziebarth and James Elmer Ziebarth; and three sisters, Juanita McCurdy, Mildred Shannon and Florence Cordon.

A graveside service will be 11 a.m. Friday at Danville Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Luther Lemon officiating.

The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Wednesday at Barker Funeral Home and at other times at the residence.

Linwood Callands

BLAIRS, Va. - Linwood "Fitz" Callands, 71, of 145 Fox Den Drive in Blairs, and formerly of the Mount Airy community, died Monday, Nov. 22, 1999, in Martinsville Memorial Hospital of Martinsville and Henry County.

Born Nov. 6, 1928, in Pittsylvanic County, he was the son of the late Virgie Callands.

He was a retired employee of Burlington Industries in Altavista, a veteran of the Korean Conflict and a member of Mount Airy Baptist Church.

He is survived by his wife, Ella Callands of Danville; two daughters, Linda L. Stephens of Blairs and Loretta Waller of Danville; one son Stanley Callands of Danville; two stepdaughters, Barbara Gene Tucker of Hurt and Jeanetta Cardwell of Danville; a stepson, William Thomas Barksdale of Atlanta, Ga.; three brothers, Leon Callands of Phildelphia, Pa., Joe Dickerson of Hurt, and Ernest Callands of New Rochelle, N.Y.; 11 grandchildren; five step-grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren and six step-great grandchildren.

The funeral will be held Friday at 1 p.m. at Mount Airy Baptist Chuch with the Rev. R.P. King officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Miller Funeral Home in Gretna is in charge of the arrangements.

Evelyn Clark

SOUTH BOSTON, Va. - Evelyn Buckner Clark, 74, of 2200 East Hyco Road in South Boston, died Wednesday, Nov. 24, 1999, at Halifax Regional Medical Center.

Born July 4, 1925, she was the daughter of Floyd Jackerson Buckner and Gratty Lee Barbour Buckner. She was married to Roy Hutchins Clark, who survives.

She was a member of Mount Zion Baptist Church in Danville and VFW Post #8243 Ladies Auxiliary.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by one daughter, Brenda C. Ford of South Boston; one foster son, Ronnie Garman of Danville, Pa.; two sisters, Reba B. Lunsford of Halifax and Margaret B. Puckett of Danville; two grandsons and one great-grandson.

She was predeceased by her parents, Floyd Jackerson Buckner and Gratty Lee Barbour Buckner, and foster parents Annie Bet and Jim Collie.

The funeral will be held Friday at 2 p.m. at Brooks Funeral Home Chapel, with the Rev. Joseph Willis officiating. Burial will be in the Halifax Memorial Gardens.

The family will receive friends Friday from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at Brooks Funeral Home in South Boston and other times at the residence.

Gertrude Newcomb McKee

DANVILLE, Va. - Gertrude Newcomb McKee, 84, of Danville died Wednesday, Nov. 24, 1999, at Stratford Health Care Center after declining health for the past three months.

Born Sept. 27, 1915, in Galax, she was the daughter of William W. Newcomb and Ollie Smith Newcomb. She was married to Glenn D. McKee, who predeceased her Sept. 2, 1979.

She lived her life in the Danville area where she was a member of Northview Presbyterian Church. Prior to her retirement, she was employed with C & O Railroad for a number of years.

Survivors include one sister, Florence N. Combs of Lothian, Md.; and one brother, Dillion Newcomb of Clifton Forge.

The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Saturday at Northview Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Adolph Otersen officiating. Interment icon will be in Danville Memorial Gardens.

The family will receive friends Friday from 7 to 8 p.m. at the Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel.

Barbara Morris

DANVILLE, Va. - Barbara Ann Williams Morris, 56, of 9681 Martinsville Highway, died unexpectedly Wednesday morning, Nov. 24, 1999 at Danville Regional Medical Center after a one-day stay in the hospital.

Born Aug. 10, 1943, in Danville, she was the daughter of Henry Williams and Gladys Cooper Williams, who both survive her. She was married to Alton G. Morris, who survives.

She made her home in Danville most of her life before moving to the Bachelor's Hall community of Pittsylvania County 20 years ago. She was a homemaker and a member of Calvary Baptist Church on Edgewood Drive.

In addition to her husband of the residence and her mother and father, both of Danville, she is survived by one son, Alton Todd Morris of the residence; one brother, Kenneth Williams of Danville and two grandchildren.

The funeral will be held 11 a.m. Saturday at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. J. Richard Markham officiating. Interment icon will follow at Danville Memorial Gardens.

The family will receive friends 7 to 8:30 p.m. Friday evening at the funeral home and other times at the residence of her mother and brother, at 10849 Franklin Turnpike in Dry Fork.

Lawrence Roberts

DANVILLE, Va. - Lawrence Edward Roberts, 74, of 219 Westview Drive died Tuesday, Nov. 23, 1999 at his residence after three years of declinging health.

Born April 19, 1925, in Danville, he was the son of Wister Bryant Roberts and Mary Davis Roberts.

He married Helen Dodson Roberts on June 24, 1948. She survives him.

He lived all his life in Pittsylvania County and Danville. He had served with the U.S. Navy during World War II. He was retired from Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. with 20 years of service where he worked as a forklift operator. He was also a charter member of North Main Baptist Church where he had served as a trustee for 35 years, as an usher and on the building and grounds committee.

In addition to the wife of the residence, he is survived by one son, Ray Edward Roberts of Greensboro, N.C.; one daughter, Dale R. Branch of Danville; two brothers, Marvin Roberts of Danville and Martin Roberts of Fayetteville, N.C.; two sisters, Kaye R. Whitt and Faye R Pyrtle, both of Ringgold and three grandchildren.

The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Friday from the North Main Baptist Church with the Rev. Dr. Eddie Davis and Rev. Kyle Flora officiating. Interment icon will be at Danville Memorial Gardens.

The family will receive friends at the residence.

Thomas Smith

HINTON, Va. - Thomas Carl "T.C." Smith, 77, of 11194 Rawley Pike in Hinton, died Wednesday, Nov. 24, 1999, at McGuire Veterans Hospital in Richmond after declining health for the past three months.

Born Jan. 1, 1922, in North Carolina, he was the son of Rufus and Leola Knight Smith.

On July 3, 1974, he was married to M. Louise Huskey Smith, who survives him.

He was educated in North Carolina Public Schools and served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He made his home in the Hinton community for the past 35 years and was self-employed in the landscaping business. He was a member of Mount Horeb United Methodist Church, Rion Bowman, VFW Post #632 and the Disabled American Veterans.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by three step-sons, James H. Dyson of Reidsville, N.C., Kenneth R. Dyson of Modesto, Calif., and Michael B. Dyson of Eden, N.C.; three brothers, Frank Smith and Paul Smith of Danville, and Rufe Smith of Greensboro, N.C.; one sister, Reumal Goodson of Danville and four stepgrandchildren.

The funeral will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. at Mount Horeb United Methodist Church with the Rev. Kenneth Walco, Rev. Jeff Ferguson and Rev. Cecil Gunn officiating. Burial with military rites will follow in the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends from Friday 7 to 8 p.m. at the Lindsey Harrisonburg Funeral Home in Harrisonburg.

Clecia Stanfield

DANVILLE, Va. - Clecia Mae Stanfield, 82, of 638 Holbrook Street, Apt. 1, of Danville died Tueseday, Nov. 23, 1999, at Riverside Health Care Center.

Born May 10, 1917, in Spartansburg, S.C., she was the daughter of Cleve Allen and Ruth Daniels Allen.

She was married to George W. Stanfield, who survives.

She was employed with Virginia Tobacco Factory unitl she became disabled and was a member of Mount Zion Holy Church.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by two step-daughters, Elsie Mae Miller and Florence Stanfield, both of Danville; three sons, Anthony Stanfield of Greensburo, N.C., Harold Stanfield of Danville, and Larry Stanfield of Ridgeway; one brother, Alonza Crews of Danville; ten grandchildren and four great grandchildren.

The funeral will be held Saturday at 1 p.m. at Fisher and Watkins Funeral Home Chapel. Interment icon will follow at Danville Memorial Gardens, with the elder Jimmy Woodson officiating.

The family will receive friends from Friday 7 to 8 p.m. at the Fisher and Watkins Funeral Home Chapel.

Clarence Towler

CHATHAM, Va. - Clarence "Papa" Towler, 92, of 561 Greenbay Road in Chatham, died Wednesday, November 24, 1999, at Danville Regional Medical Center.

Born April 11, 1970 in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of Jim Towler and Ora Custer Toweler. He was predeceased by his wife Minnie Hundley Towler; four brothers and two sisters: Percy Towler, Doug Towler, Aubrey Towler, Howard Towler, Lora Yeatts and Reba Towler.

He was the oldest member of Greenbay Christian Church where he served as a former deacon and board member. During World War II, he contributed to the war effort as a supervisor in Dye House #5, dyeing fabrics for the military. He worked 20 years at Dan River Mills and retired as a farmer. He made many friends in the community selling peaches from his Greenbay farm.

He is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Jackie and Reuben Pickral of Chatham and Glenda and Kenneth Creasy of Lynchburg; one brother, Marion Towler of Danville; one sister, Amy T. Stephens of Rocky Mount; four grandchildren, Stacey Gauldin of Axton, Chris Pickral of Germantown, N.C., Kelly East of Chatham and Courtney-Leigh Pate of Burlington, N.C., and two great-grandchildren, David Gauldin and Cristen Gauldin.

The funeral will be conducted 11 a.m. Saturday at Greenbay Christiam Church with the Rev.. Rudy Hearn, Rev. J.D. Hunt III and Samuel Marlowe officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends 7 to 8:30 p.m. Friday at Colbert-Moran Funeral Home and other times at the residence of his daughter and son-in-law, Jackie and Reuben Pickral, 497 Greenbay Road in Chatham.

Bessie Baynes

HALIFAX, Va. - Bessie Reeves Lovelace Baynes, 75, of 1018 Love Shop Road, Halifax, died Thursday, Nov. 25, 1999 at Henrico Doctors Hospital, Richmond.

Born June 14, 1924, in Halifax County, she was a daughter of Daniel Lacy Lovelace and Alice Reeves Lovelace.

She was married to Baxter B. Baynes, who predeceased her. She was a member of Dan River Baptist Church.

Survivors include one daughter, Linda Jean Salomone of Spotsylvania; three sisters, Mary L. Holt of Halifax, Margaret L. Costner of Greensboro, N.C. and Anne L. Newton of Richmond; one brother, Daniel "Pete" Lovelace of Halifax; three grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

The funeral will be conducted at 3 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 28, at Dan River Baptist Church by the Rev. Larry Frakes and the Rev. Joe Brewer. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends at Powell Funeral Home from 7-8:30 p.m. Saturday. At other times, the family will be at her home, 1018 Love Shop Road.
