Viola Lowery
ALTON, Va. - Viola Cole Lowery, 75, of 17181 Philpott Road, died Thursday, Nov. 25, 1999 at Moses-Cone Hospice, Greensboro, N.C.
Born Dec. 11, 1923, in Halifax County, she was the daughter of John Alix Cole and Ola Lowery Cole.
She was married
to James Otis Cole, who predeceased her. She was a homemaker.
In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by a son, Shelby Lowery and three brothers, James Cole, Felix Cole and Ramon Cole.
Survivors include a daughter, Karen L. King of Salisbury, N.C.; a son, Charles Lowery of South Boston; three sisters, Nelva C. Lowery, Daisy C. Averette and Doris C. Purgason, all of South Boston; two brothers, Malcolm E. "Jack" Cole and Floyd C. "Buddy" Cole, both of South Boston; and six grandchildren.
A graveside service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Cole Family cemetery, Virgilina, with the Rev. Don Davidson officiating.

George Martin
STANLEYTOWN, Va. - George Harvey Martin, 93, of 159 Stanley Main St., died Friday, Nov. 26, 1999 at Martinsville Memorial Hospital.
Born July 10, 1906, in Patrick County, he was a son of George Robert "Bob" Martin and Martha Ann Wood Martin.
He was retired from Stanley Furniture Co., where he worked 45 years.
He was of the Methodist faith.
He was predeceased by one sister, Emma Layman and four brothers, Clarence, Amos, Clyde and Elbert Smith.
Survivors include his wife, Pearl W. Martin of the residence; two daughters, Lola M. Rose of Danville and Mona M. Edmonds of Bassett; a son, Donald Lewis Martin of Bassett; two brothers, Curtis Martin of Fieldale and Joe Martin of Patrick Springs; nine grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted 11 a.m. Monday, Nov. 29, 1999 from Collins Funeral Chapel by the Rev. Clyde DeLoach. Interment
will be in Roselawn Burial Park in Martinsville.
Gertrude Newcomb McKee
DANVILLE, Va. - Gertrude Newcomb McKee, 84, of Danville died Wednesday, Nov. 24, 1999, at Stratford Health Care Center after declining health for the past three months.
Born Sept. 27, 1915, in Galax, she was the daughter of William W. Newcomb and Ollie Smith Newcomb.
She was married
to Glenn D. McKee, who predeceased her Sept. 2, 1979.
She lived her life in the Danville area where she was a member of Northview Presbyterian Church. Prior to her retirement, she was employed with C & O Railroad for a number of years.
Survivors include one sister, Florence N. Combs of Lothian, Md.; and one brother, Dillion Newcomb of Clifton Forge.
The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Northview Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Adolph Otersen officiating. Interment
will be in Danville Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends Friday from 7 to 8 p.m. at the Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel.
James Herman Rowland
LYNCH STATION, Va. - James Herman Rowland, 80, of 25 Bishop Creek Road, Lynch Station, died Thursday, November 25, 1999 in Lynchburg General Hospital.
Born May 13, 1919, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of the late Amos Rowland and Annie Shields Rowland.
Mr. Rowland was twice married
. First to the late Beatrice Bennett Rowland and then to Fleecy Dalton Rowland of the residence.
He was a member of Gretna Christian Church and was a retired automobile salesman.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son Sherrill James "Jim" Rowland and his wife, Karen of Lynchburg; two brothers, Earl Rowland and John Rowland, both of Gretna; a sister, Pat Carter of Altavista; two grandchildren, Loree Rowland-Sheffield and her husband, Kevin of Columbia, S.C. and Eric Rowland and his wife, Tabitha of Lynchburg.
Graveside services will be conducted 2 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 28, 1999 at Gretna Burial Park by the Rev. John E. Wallace.
The family will receive friends Saturday evening from 7-8:30 p.m. at Colbert-Moran Funeral Home and other times at the residence, 25 Bishop Creek Road, Lynch Station.

Kathryn Turner
DANVILLE, Va. - Kathryn Fowlkes Turner, 78, of 150 Westmoreland Court, Apartment 10, died Wednesday, Nov. 24, 1999 at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born July 18, 1921, in Danville, she was the daughter of Albert Rosser Fowlkes and Kate S. Fowlkes.
She was married
to William A. Turner Jr., her husband of 58 years, who survives at the residence.
She was a longtime employee of First National/Nations Bank and was active in various professional and civic organizations for many years. She was a member of Mount Vernon United Methodist Church where she served on the board and was the chairwoman of the church caring committee.
In addition to her husband of the residence, she is survived by a daughter, Carol Turner Cawley of Yorktown; one son, W. Rodney Turner of Hampton; one brother, Robert D. Fowlkes of Danville and two grandchildren.
She was predeceased by two brothers, Dorsey J. Fowlkes and Albert R. Fowlkes.
The funeral will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at Mount Vernon United Methodist Church with the Rev. Jay Ashby conducting the services. Interment
will follow at Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at Townes Funeral Home and other times at the residence.
Willard Butts Jr.
DANVILLE, Va. - Willard Armstead Butts Jr., 73, of 786 East Paxton St., died Saturday, Nov. 27, 1999 at his residence after 10 years of declining health.
Born March 23, 1926, in Danville, he was the son of Willard Armstead Butts Sr. and Annie Rossie Marshall Butts.
He lived his entire life in the Danville area, where prior to his retirement he worked as a self-employed painting contractor. He was a member of College Park Baptist Church, where he had served as a deacon. He was also a member of The Knights of Pythias, where he was past chancellor for Phoenix Lodge #62. He served in the U.S. Navy in World War II.
He was married
to Anna Lou Peirce Butts, who died Jan. 12, 1994.
He was also predeceased by a sister, Louise Butts Holt.
Survivors include two sons, Fred Butts of the residence and Jim Butts of Watkins Glen, N.Y., and three grandchildren.
He was predeceased by one sister, Louise Butts Holt.

Henry Henson
DANVILLE, Va. - Henry Edward Henson, 78, of 121 Austin Circle, died Saturday morning, Nov. 27, 1999, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born April 26, 1921, in Greenville, S.C., he was the son of Henry Benjamin Henson and Lillian Center Henson.
He worked at McDonnell-Douglas until his retirement in 1980. He was a World War II veteran having served under Gen. George S. Patton. He received the Bronze Star and the Purple Heart twice. He was a member of Woodlawn Baptist Church.
He was married
on Jan. 1, 1992 to Peggy Green Henson, who survives.
Survivors in addition to his wife of the residence include two sisters, Margaret Pruitt and Wilma Salmon, both of Danville; one son, Henry B. Henson of Spartanburg, S.C.; one daughter, Jacquelin Shipman of Spartanburg; and several grandchildren.
Graveside funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, Nov. 29, at Highland Burial Park with the Rev. Mike Hearp officiating. The family will receive friends at the residence, 121 Austin Circle.

Ocie Davis
DANVILLE, Va. - Ocie Davis, 64, of 207 Audabon Drive, died Tuesday, Nov. 23, 1999, at Martinsville Memorial Hospital.
Born Feb. 11, 1935, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of James Davis and Beatrice Harris. He was a construction worker.
Survivors include five sons, Darrell Davis and Ocie Davis Jr., both of Danville, Arnie Davis of Seattle, Wash., Jerry Tarpley of Pensgrove, N.J., and Kent Campbell of Jamestown, N.Y.; two daughters, Cassie Morton of Danville and Vanessa Hairston of Axton; two brothers, Acie Davis of Danville and Leroy Davis of Martinsville; five sisters, Maria Lewis of Martinsville, Dorothy Cabell and Geraldine Poole, both of Danville, Ruth Harris of Axton, and Janie Taylor of Dansburg, Conn.; 14 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday, Nov. 29, from Cunningham and Hughes Memorial Chapel with Rev. William Wilson officiating. Interment
will follow in Tarpley's Chapel Baptist Church cemetery. The family is residing at 660 Glendale St., Danville.
Michia Pleasant
DANVILLE, Va. - Michia Dawn Valentine Pleasant, 45, of 508 Elizabeth St., died Thursday, Nov. 25, 1999, at her residence.
She was born Oct. 21, 1954, in Hillsdale, Mich., the daughter of Audley Burt Toy and Carolyn Jane Lockwood Toy Chesebro.
She was a homemaker and of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include her parents and her husband, Franklin McAuther "Mack" Pleasant of the residence; one sister, Patricia Newcomb of Yanceyville, N.C.; five brothers, Marlin Toy, Gregory Toy, Daniel Toy, Scott Toy and Audley Toy Jr., all of Danville; and four sons, Eric Valentine, Brian Valentine, Justin Valentine and Audley Toy, all of Danville.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Nov. 29, at Providence Baptist Church with the Rev. Kenneth A. Clark officiating. Marley Funeral Home of Yanceyville is in charge of arrangements.
Viola Stranahan
DANVILLE, Va. - Viola Thomas Stranahan, 95, formerly of 224 Courtland St., died Saturday morning, Nov. 27, 1999, at Gretna Health Care Center.
Born Feb. 6, 1904, in Charlotte, N.C., she was the daughter of John Thomas and Florence Austin Thomas. She lived most of her life in New York. She moved to Danville in 1970. She was a member of Forest Lawn Baptist Church, and she was a registered nurse before retiring.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Donald H. Stranahan, on Dec. 3, 1970. She also was predeceased by one brother, Bill Thomas, and two sisters, Carrie Brigman and Pauline Jones.
Survivors include one sister, Mozelle T. Shorter of Danville; seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Nov. 29, at Highland Burial Park with the Rev. Roger Austin and Rev. Gilmer Setliff officiating.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Sunday at Barker Funeral Home Chapel, and at other times will be at the residence of her niece, 105 Music St., Gretna.

Lewis Davis
Lewis Green Davis, 71, of 3159 Cherry Hill Church Road, formerly of Richmond died Sunday, Nov. 28, 1999 at McGuire Veterans Hospital in Richmond.
Born June 1, 1928 in Halifax County, he was the son of Albert Quincy Davis and Alice Newby Davis. He was a retired supervisor at Union Camp in Richmond.
He is survived by one son, Robert L. Davis of South Boston; three brothers, Joe Davis, Albert Davis and William Davis, all of South Boston; two sisters, Berthe D. Martin and Margie D. Jones, both of South Boston; two grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
He was predeceased by four sisters, Elsie Hamm, Inez Morris, Lossie Chopman and Lavenia Yancey.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday at Brooks Funeral Home Chapel, with the Rev. Jack Stewart officiating. The burial will be in Oak Ridge cemetery in South Boston.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Monday at Brooks Funeral Home and other times at the residence of his son, 3159 Cherry Hill Church Road.
