Winnie Valkenburg
DANVILLE, Va. - Winnie Mae Van Valkenburg, 82, of 491 West Main St., died Saturday afternoon, Nov. 27, 1999, at Riverside Healthcare Center.
Born Jan. 21, 1917, in Clarksville, Ark., she was the daughter of Alfred Ware and Ida Mae Ware.
She married
Frank Van Valkenburg II, Sept. 1, 1938, who predeceased her.
She lived most of her life outside of Arcadia, Okla. in Lake Hiwase, and later moved to Danville. She spent her last years caring for her little dogs and garden. She was a member of Sacred Heart Church.
Survivors include one son Frank Van Valkenburg, III of Danville; two sisters Georgia Fegerstrom of Redding, Calif. and Edna Lyall of Claypool, Ariz.; four grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
A funeral will be 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Joseph Cathedral in Oklahoma City, Okla. Interment
will be in Rose Hill Burial Park, Oklahoma City.
Leroy Wainwright
GRETNA, Va. - Leroy Wainwright, 87, of 397 Summerset Road, died Monday, Nov. 29, 1999, in Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Sept. 7, 1912, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of Robert "Bob" Wainwright and Sally Lou Barbour Wainwright.
He married
Mildred Wainwright who predeceased him. He was employed at Lane Company, Altavista prior to his retirement.
He was a member of New Chapel Church where he served on the Deacon Board.
Survivors include two sons Lester Wainwright of Gretna and Edmond Wainwright of Queens, N.Y.; one daughter Lena Clements of Gretna; one brother Nathaniel Wainwright of Philadelphia, Pa.; one sister Sally C. White; seven grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, two step-grandchildren and four step-great-grandchildren.
In addition to his wife, he was predeceased by one daughter Syble Wainwright.
A funeral will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Miller Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Lassie Jones officiating. Burial will be in Stone Family cemetery.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
Priscilla "Pat" Barber
DANVILLE, Va.. - Priscilla "Pat" Williamson Barber, 75, of 281 Guilford St., died early Wednesday morning, Dec. 1, 1999, at Danville Regional Medical Center after one year of declining health.
Born Dec. 24, 1923, in Halifax County, she was the daughter of Green Allen Williamson and Lucy Booth Williamson.
She married
L. Clinton Barber, who survives.
She spent most of her life in Danville where she was a homemaker and a member of St. Luke United Methodist Church.
In addition to her husband of the residence, survivors include two sons Clinton David Barber of Lynchburg and Thomas Allen Barber of Danville; three brothers John B. Williamson and Freddie Williamson, both of Milton, N.C. and Jimmy Williamson of Morristown, Tenn.; one foster brother Bobby Voigt of Southport, N.C.; and two grandchildren.
She was predeceased by one brother Conroe Williamson.
A funeral will be 2 p.m. Friday at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Ron Mateer and the Rev. Tom Evans officiating.
Burial will be in Danville Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home and at other times at the residence.
Margaret Chandler
SANDY LEVEL, Va. - Margaret Casey Chandler, 52, of 222 River Ridge Drive, died Wednesday, Dec. 1, 1999, after a long illness.
Born April 4, 1947, in Independence, Iowa, she was the daughter of Virginia Clark Casey of Vienna and the late Richard Casey, Sr.
She spent her working career in Washington D.C. at Georgetown University ROTC, the U.S. Forest Service and the Central Intelligence Agency.
In addition to her mother, she is survived by her husband Craig C. Chandler of the residence; a son Troy MacDaniel of Fairfax and a brother Richard Casey, Jr. of Vienna.
Funeral services will be conducted 11:00 a.m., Friday, December 3, 1999, at Colbert-Moran Chapel by Rev. Dr. John S. Ruef. Burial will be 12:30 p.m., Monday, December 6, 1999, in Quantico National cemetery.

Thomas Guill, Sr.
NATHALIE, Va. - Thomas Raymond Guill, Sr., 81, of 1247 Old Cedar Trail, died Tuesday, Nov. 30, 1999.
Born March 30, 1918, in Halifax County, he was the son of Charlie Melvin Guill and Ollie Crews Guill.
He married
Mary Smith Guill, who predeceased him.
He was a veteran of the United States Navy and served during World War II. He was retired from Dupont where he worked as a sheet metal mechanic and was member of Hunting Creek Baptist Church.
Survivors include one son Thomas Raymond Guill, Jr. of Fayetteville, Ga.; one daughter Brenda Guill Jones of Richmond, Va.; one brother Jesse Edward Guill of Richmond; one sister Betty G. Allen of Richmond; five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
A funeral will be 12:30 p.m. Friday at Bliley Chippenham Chapel, Richmond. Burial will be in Dale Memorial Park.
The family received friends 7-8:30 p.m. Wednesday and will receive friends 7-9 p.m. Thursday at the chapel.

Cecil Sizer
DANVILLE, Va. - Cecil G. Sizer, 93, formerly of 114 Cheryl Drive, died Monday, Nov. 29, 1999, at The Laurels of Willow Creek Health Care Center, Richmond.
Born Jan. 3, 1906, in Botetourt County, he was the son of Charles Sizer and Katie Rocke Sizer.
He married
Helen Suits Sizer, who predeceased her Oct. 28, 1995. He lived most of his life in Danville and worked until his retirement at Dan River Inc. He then worked a short time at The Downtowner. He was a member of North Main Baptist Church.
Survivors include two daughters Catherine S. Harris of Chester, and Linda S. DelPrince of Davis County, Fla.; one son James Kenneth Sizer of Orlando, Fla.; eight grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren.
In addition to his wife, he was predeceased by one son Bobby Lee Sizer; two brothers Hubert Sizer and C. William Sizer; and five sisters Effie S. Newton, Edith S. Glover, Elsie S. Brightwell, Pernie S. Ashby and Hannah S. Adams.
A funeral will be 2 p.m. Friday at Barker Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. A. Kyle Flora officiating. Interment
will be in Highland Burial Park.

Christine Meadows Taylor
CHATHAM, Va. - Christine Meadows Taylor, 82, died Monday, Nov. 29, 1999, at The Eldercare of Franklin County, Rocky Mount
Born Sept. 30, 1917, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Grover Cleveland Meadows and Virgie Davis Meadows.
She married
Gus Martin Taylor, who predeceased her.
She was a member of Sheva Church of Christ.
Survivors include four sons Kenneth M. Taylor of Danville, Carl Lee Taylor of Chatham, Gus Taylor, Jr. of Chatham, Hunt W. Taylor of Lynchburg; four daughters Pauline T. Sink of Rocky Mount, Margaret T. Bullington of Blairs, Joyce T. Hershman of Ruther Glen. and Bernice T. Saunders of Nathalie, and one sister, Irene M. Robertson of Gretna; 19 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren and seven great-great-grandchildren.
In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by two brothers, Cleveland Meadows and Berkley Meadows; and one sister Sally Riddle.
A funeral will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Sheva Church of Christ with the Rev. Mickey Witcher and the Rev. Larry Owen officiating. Burial will be in church cemetery.

Terenzo Bennett
DANVILLE, Va. - Terenzo Bennett, 18, of 161 Williams Court, died Saturday, Nov. 27, 1999, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born May 5, 1981, in Danville, he was the son of Joyce Edmunds and Terry Bennett, who both survive. He was the step-son of John Edmunds, who also survive.
He attended Dan River High School and was employed at Golden Skillet Restaurant. He was a member of Union Street Missionary Baptist Church.
In addition to his parents, survivors include one brother John Edmunds, Jr.; one half-brother Terry Bennett, Jr.; grandparents Paul Wade and Maggie Wade and Frank Bennett and the late Alberta Bennett; and great-grandparents.
A funeral will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Union Street Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. Dr. Samuel Griffith officiating. Interment
will be in Highland Burial Park. The family will receive friends at the residence.

Catherine Guthrie
DANVILLE, Va. - Catherine Johnson Guthrie, 83, of 144 Park Ave., died early Wednesday morning, Dec. 1, 1999, at Roman Eagle Memorial Home after several years of declining health. She had been a resident for 2 1/2 months.
Born Dec. 17, 1915, in Caswell County, N.C., she was the daughter of Lloyd L. Johnson, Sr. and Ida Chandler Johnson.
She married
Henry Samuel Guthrie April 20, 1940, who survives.
She made her home in Danville since 1953, where she was a homemaker and attended Burton Memorial Presbyterian Church.
She was predeceased by three brothers William Johnson, Lloyd L. Johnson, Jr. and James C. Johnson.
In addition to her husband of the residence, survivors include one daughter Betty Guthrie Thompson of Danville; one sister Annie B. Johnson of Yanceyville, N.C.; two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
A graveside service will be 11 a.m. Friday at Yanceyville Baptist Church cemetery with the Rev. Ralph McCormack officiating.

Meredith Broderick Kearney
HIGH POINT, NC - Meredith Broderick Kearney, 81, of 1003 Robin Hood Road, High Point, formerly of Danville, Virginia, died December 1, 1999, at her home.
She was born May 21, 1918, in Union, South Carolina. The daughter of the late William E. and Leona Griffin Broderick.
Her husband, M.B. (Buck) Kearney died in 1976.
She is survived by a daughter, Carol Sokevitz Matney and husband Don of High Point, formerly of Danville, daughter Laura Kearney White and husband Billy of Greer, SC and a son Edward (Chip) Kearney, also of Greer; seven grandchildren, and four great grandchildren; three sisters: Mary Elizabeth Hawkins of Danville & Bracey, VA, Margaret Nelson of Jonesville, SC, and Mildred Self of Spartenburg, SC.
Mrs. Kearney worked as a Public Health RN in Union, SC for 25 years. During her 9 years in Danville, she was a volunteer tutor for adults with the City's Literacy Program. For many years she also worked as a volunteer with the Danville Blind Bowlers Association.
Memorial Services will be held on Saturday, December 4, 11:30 am, at Spring Hill United Methodist Church, High Point, NC.
The family will receive friends at the church's Fellowship Hall after the Service.

Gertie Nichols
DANVILLE, Va. - Gertie Whitener Nichols, 94, formerly of 231 South Ridge St., died Wednesday evening, Dec. 1, 1999, at Roman Eagle Memorial Home. She had been a resident for 2 1/2 years.
Born Oct. 4, 1905, in McMinville, Tenn., she was the daughter of William Adolphus Whitener and Cynthia Reed Whitener.
She married
Yates Judson Nichols, who predeceased her.
She made her home in Danville for more than 70 years and worked at Dan River, Inc. before retiring. She was a member of Rivermont Baptist Church and Dan River Retired Workers Club.
She was predeceased by two sisters, Naomie Wright and Billie Whitener.
Survivors include one niece, two nephews and several great nieces and nephews.
A graveside service will be 4 p.m. Friday at Highland Burial Park with the Rev. Mike Wiles officiating.
The family will receive friends at the residence of Helen Wiles, 1237 Ringgold Road.
