Archie Griggs Jr.
DANVILLE, Va. - Archie H. Griggs Jr., 73, of 1856 Old Mayfield Rd., died Friday, Dec. 3, 1999, at Danville Regional Medical Center after three months of declining health.
Born Dec. 7, 1925 in Eden, N.C., he was the son of Archie Holland Griggs Sr. and Maybud Hankins Griggs.
He was married
to Doris Wimbush Griggs, who survives.
He lived in the Danville area for the past 44 years. He was employed by Fieldcrest Mills in Eden, N.C., as a supervisor and he retired in 1988. He was a member of Stokesland Baptist Church, Riverbend Volunteer Fire Dept. and a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include two daughters, Donna Whetzel, of Waynesboro, and Lo Ann Ward of Alexandria; two brothers, Phillip Griggs, of Pelham, N.C., and Pete Griggs of Collinsville; three grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.
A funeral will be held 2 p.m. Monday at Stokesland Baptist Church with the Rev. John Warner officiating. Interment
will be in Danville Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends at the residence.
Carol Wade
DANVILLE, Va. - Carol Hope Lanum Wade, 67, of 244 Hamlin Ave. died Sunday, Dec. 5, 1999, at Danville Regional Medical Center after a brief illness.
Born March 13, 1932, in Covington, she was the daughter of Dennis Kirby Lanum and Atlas Armstrong Lanum.
She had lived in the Danville area since 1967. She was employed by Sears and worked in the shoe department.
She was of the Christian faith.
Survivors include two sons, Steven F. Wade I of the residence and Richard H. Wade of Danville; two daughters, Sandra Wade Parks and Ronda F. Wade, both of Danville; three sisters, Lozelle L. Holt of Atlanta, Faye L. Braden of Alexandria and Lawanda L. Fitzgerald of Covington; two brothers, Gerald Lanum of Virginia Beach and Larry D. Lanum of Danville and three grandchildren.
A graveside service will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday at Highland Burial Park with the Rev. Bill Soyars officiating.
The family will receive friends 7-9 p.m. at the residence of her daughter, Sandra Wade Parks, 167 Naples St.
Kenneth Clement
NATHALIE, Va. - Elder Kenneth Leander Clement, 51, of 1090 Leda Road, died Friday, Dec. 3, 1999 at Halifax Regional Hospital, South Boston.
He was born August 10, 1948 in Winston-Salem, N.C.
He was married
to Veria Clement, who survives.
In addition to his wife of Nathalie, survivors include five daughters, Tabitha Clement and Winter Clement, both of Nathalie, Tracy Willis of Winston-Salem, La'Toya Epps of Petersburg and Camille Miller of Suffolk; one son, Kenneth Clement Jr. of Suffolk; three sisters, Janie Bishop of Atlanta, Mary Wilson of Kernersville, N.C. and Teresa Rosser of Winston-Salem; three brothers, William Clement of Prince George, James Miller of Winston-Salem and Donald Miller of Salisbury, N.C.; and four grandchildren.
A funeral will be held 1 p.m. Tuesday at Christ Temple Blue Rock Holiness Church, Vernon Hill, with District Elder Donald Johnson officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the residence.

Evelyn Garrett Bowyer
DANVILLE, Va. - Evelyn Garrett Bowyer, 56, passed away 1:30 AM Monday, December 6, 1999, after suffering two and 1/2 years with diabetes.
Evelyn was the daughter of Albert Earle Garrett Jr., and Evelyn Steele Garrett of Danville. Evelyn was a graduate of George Washington High School and Westhampton College.
She married
Kenneth R. Bowyer July 1965.
She was a member of the Junior Wednesday club and a member of the Danville Duplicate Bridge Club.
Even in declining health, she played bridge on the internet and took first place in one of their recent tourneys with over 40 tables participating. She was a member of West Main Baptist Church.
Evelyn was also an artist. She painted numerous paintings which are enjoyed by family and friends. She illustrated coloring books, three of local interest were:"Village by the Dan", "Winston-Salem, N.C., A Journal to Color", and "A Story of Old Salem".
Born June 22, 1943, Evelyn is survived by her husband, Kenneth R. Bowyer, Sr., her son, Kenneth R. Bowyer, Jr. now in Winston-Salem, N.C., her daughther, Virginia Brooke Gauldin, and her terrific grandson, Bryan Joseph Gauldin of Danville.
Also surviving are her mother, Mrs. A.E. Garrett, Jr., her brother A.E. Garrett III, her sister, Clara G. Fountain, all of Danville, and her sister Carolyn Garrett Bouldin of Winston Salem, N.C.
Evelyn was a proud, loving, wife, mother, grandmother, and animal lover. Evelyn's request is in lieu of flowers, any considerations be sent to the Danville Humane Society, P.O. Box 3352, Danville, Va., 24543.
The family will receive visitors at Townes Funeral Home, Tuesday evening between 7:00 and 8:30 p.m. and at the 120 Parkmore Court residence at other times.
The funeral service will be conducted at Townes Funeral Home at 2:00 P.M. Wednesday, December 8, 1999, followed by interment at Highland Burial Park.
Mary Davis
AXTON, Va. - Mary Elizabeth Hurd Davis, 84, of 1060 Sandy River Road, died Sunday, Dec. 5, 1999, at her residence.
Born May 21, 1915, in Henry County, she was the daughter of Millard Filmore Hurd and Bessie Ramsey Hurd.
She married
Reuben R. Davis, who predeceased her.
She was a homemaker and member of Dan River Primitive Baptist Church of Eden, N.C. She was former member of the United Daughters of the Confederacy, Daughters of the American Revolution, The National Society Colonial Dames XVII Century, The Huguenot Society of the Founders of Manakin in the Colony of Virginia, and the Daughters of the American Colonists.
Survivors include three daughters, Shirley Burchell of Eden, N.C., Polly Robertson of Axton and Cynthia Chiovoloni of Norwich, Conn.; two sons, W. Filmore Davis of Axton and Clark Davis of Richmond.
In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by six brothers, Leonard Hurd, James Hurd, Harry Hurd, Tom Hurd, Jesse Hurd and John Dyer Hurd; and one sister, Ninner Sue Hurd Stultz.
A funeral will be 2 p.m. Wednesday with the Elder Wallace Smith officiating. Burial will be in Reuben Davis Family cemetery, Axton.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Tuesday at Norris Funeral Home Chapel and at other times at the residence.
Raymond Farlow Sr.
FOREST, Va. - Raymond Cecil Farlow Sr., 68, of 105 Jane Randolph St., died Sunday, Dec. 5, 1999, at Lynchburg General Hospital after being in the hospital for two weeks and in declinig health for two years.
Born Feb. 23, 1931 in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of the late James M. Farlow and Gladys Robertson Farlow, who survives.
He lived in the Lynchburg and Danville areas most of his life. Prior to his retirement, he worked as a project manager for Southern Air Inc.
He was a member of Freedom Word Church in Appomatox.
He was married
to Billie Jean Kelly Farlow, Feb. 5, 1949, who survive.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include one daughter, Carolyn Rae Farlow Mabe of Rocky Mount; three sons, Raymond Cecil Farlow Jr. and Michael Swanson Farlow, both of Danville, and Mark Victor Farlow of Charlotte, N.C.; one brother, James Marvin Farlow Sr. of Danville; three grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
He was predeceased by one grandson.
A funeral will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday at Riveroak Church of God with the Rev. Tim Nuckles and the Rev. Greg Mayhorn officiating. Interment
will be in Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends 7:30-8:30 p.m. at Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel and at other times at the residence of his son, Raymond C. Farlow Jr., 715 Vicar Road.
Callie Gregory
DANVILLE, Va. - Callie Reynolds Gregory, 82, of 2396 Franklin Turnpike, died Saturday, Dec. 4, 1999, at Twin Oakes Convalesent Home, South Boston, after a five-week stay and two months of declining health.
Born Dec. 7, 1916, in Callands, she was the daughter of Will Reynolds and Mary Olive Arron Reynolds.
She lived most of her life in the Pittsylvania County area except for 25 years she lived in Newport News. Prior to her retirement she worked as a switchboard operator at a local hospital in Newport News. She was a member of Oakes Memorial Baptist Church.
She married
Raymond Gregory, who predeceased her.
Survivors include three daughters, Barbara Lacey of Danville, Carolyn Wilkerson of Ringgold and Linda Spikes of Grifton, N.C.; two sisters, Doris Barbour of Axton and Helen Creel of Newport News; seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
A graveside service will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Highland Burial Park with the Rev. Brian Gibson officiating.
The family will receive friends at the residence of her daughter, Barbara Lacey, 231 Franklin Turnpike.

Ernest Johnson
CHATHAM, Va. - Ernest P. Johnson, 55, of 3401 Irish Road, died Saturday, Dec. 4, 1999, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born April 22, 1944, in Ottawa, Ill., he was the son of Ernest Johnson and Gertrude Morgan Johnson.
He married
Margaret Casner Johnson in 1966, who survives.
He was employed by Shorewood Packaging and was a member of Calvary Church of the Nazarene.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include one daughter, Stephanie Boldt of Salem; two sons, Brian Johnson of Morris and Greg Johnson of Danville; and three grandchildren.
A funeral will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Seals-Campbell Funeral Home, Marseilles, Ill. Burial will be in Riverview cemetery.

Faye Plott
FREDERICKSBURG, Va. - Faye Plott, 80, died Thursday, Dec. 2, 1999, at Mary Washington Hospital, Fredericksburg.
She married
Billy R. Plott Sr., who predeceased her.
She was a member of Forest Lawn Baptist Church, Danville.
Survivors include one daughter, Jo Anne Thomas of Fredericksburg; one son, Billy R. Plott Jr. of Manassas; two brothers, Harry Johnson and Clyde Crouch, both of Danville; seven grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
A funeral will be 10 a.m. Thursday at Mountcastle Funeral Home, 4143 Dale Boulevard, Dale City with the Rev. William Day officiating. Burial will be in Mount Comfort cemetery, Alexandria.

Marion Stewart
DANVILLE, Va. - Marion W. Stewart, 79, of 2526 N. Main St., died Sunday, Dec. 5, 1999, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Nov. 20, 1920, in Danville, she was the daughter of Nathan Womack and Ola Holland Womack.
She married
Charlie Stewart, who predeceased her. She was a laborer at Dan River Inc. and a member of North New Hope Baptist Church.
Survivors include two sons, Charlie Stewart of Forestville, Md., and Grayland Stewart of Philadelphia; one sister, Garnett Towler of Columbus, Ohio; three grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
A viewing will be 4-8 p.m. Tuesday at Cunningham and Hughes Funeral Home.
A funeral will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at North New Hope Baptist Church with the Rev. Willard Smith officiating. Burial will be in Oak Hill cemetery.
