Polly Sunshine Walker Smith
WAKE FOREST, N.C. - Polly Sunshine Walker Smith, 86, of 5217 Mill Dam Road, died January 9, 2003, at her residence. She was in declining health with Alzheimer's.
Born June 8, 1916, in Franklin County, Va., she was the daughter of George William Walker and Eliza Martin Washburn Walker.
She was a seamstress at Health-Tex in Danville, Va. for 25 years before retirement. She was a member of Matthews Memorial Presbyterian Church in Callands, Va., where she served as Elder and was a member of the choir and the Women's Fellowship.
She was married to Addison G. Smith, who predeceased her.
She is survived by three daughters, Mary Jane Keesee of Martinsville, Va., Polly Jo Dawson of Chatham, Va. and Trudy Martin Payne of Wake Forest; a daughter-in-law, Margaret H. Smith of Blairs, Va.; a son, Barney Lee Smith of Oxford; four sisters, Oleta Smith of Snow Creek, Va., Annie Laurie Cobbs of Chatham, Va., Winifred Mason of Collinsville, Va. and Marjorie Belcher of Penhook, Va.; a brother, Davis Walker of Martinsville, Va.; 12 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren.
In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by a son, Addison Dwight Smith and three brothers, Joseph Walker, George Walker and Burton Walker.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Sunday, January 12 at Matthews Memorial Presbyterian Church, Callands, Va., with the Rev. Russell East and Elder Norman Amos officiating. Interment will be at Smith Family Cemetery.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Saturday, January 11 at Norris Funeral Home, Martinsville, Va., and at other times at the residence of her daughter, Mary Jane Keesee, 50 Mountain Drive in the Figsboro Area of Martinsville, Va.

Rose Miller Spence
RINGGOLD, Va. - Rose Miller Spence, 56, of 296 Deerwood Creek, died Friday, Jan. 10, 2003, in Danville.
Born Dec. 15, 1946, in Jackson, Miss., she was the daughter of James Miller, who predeceased her and Gertrude Shepherd Miller, who survives.
She had lived in Danville for the past 25 years and worked at Dan River Mills for 24 years. She was a member of Lakewood Evangelical Methodist Church.
She was married to Stephen Rodgers Spence, who survives.
In addition to her mother of Texas and her husband, she is survived by a son, James Ervin Schrock of Dansville, Mich.; a daughter, Laurie Ann Slaughter of Ringgold; a stepson, Christopher Lee Spence of Roxboro, N.C.; two brothers, John Miller of Harrison, Mich. and Perry Miller of Texas; two sisters, Martha Jayne of Ringgold and Sherry Tomlinson of Texas and three grandchildren.
The memorial will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday at Lakewood Evangelical Methodist Church with the Rev. Jimmy Burks and the Rev. Kenneth Milam officiating. Interment will be private.
The family will receive friends at the residence of Sharon Ward, 1544 Mountain Hill Road.

Bessie Adkins Walker
DANVILLE, Va. - Bessie Adkins Walker, 73, of 356 Parkland Drive, died Thursday, Jan. 9, 2003, at Danville Regional Medical Center after being in declining health for the past year.
Born Feb. 21, 1929, in Caswell County, N.C., she was the daughter of Henry H. Pruitt and Nellie Terrell Pruitt, both deceased.
Mrs. Walker was a member of Schoolfield Pentecostal Holiness Church. Most of her life was spent in Danville where she worked as a nursing assistant for Roman Eagle Memorial Home for 32 years.
She was married twice, first to Edward T. Adkins, who predeceased her and then to Robert Walker, who survives.
In addition to her husband of the residence, she is survived by a son, Thomas Wayne Adkins and his wife, Joan Adkins, of Danville; a brother, William H. Pruitt of Hampstead, N.C.; a sister, Almeda Hubbard of Danville; a granddaughter, Christy Joyce and a great-granddaughter, Brittany Joyce, both of Danville.
In addition to her parents and first husband, Mrs. Walker was predeceased by a sister, Edna Rose and a brother, Otis Pruitt.
The graveside funeral will be held 2 p.m. Sunday at Danville Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Dr. Charles B. Scearce officiating.

Ernest Granville Baxa
DANVILLE, Va. - Ernest Granville Baxa, 88, died Wednesday, Jan. 22, 2003, at Clemson Downs in Clemson, S.C.
Born Dec. 16, 1914, in Selbyville, W.Va., he was the son of Albert and Ida Sayre Baxa.
He grew up in Buckhannon, W.Va., but came to Danville in 1937 and for 34 years served Danville Public Schools, first as a teacher, then as an assistant principal and finally as assistant superintendent. Subsequently, he was assistant professor at Danville Community College for more than eight years.
He was a graduate of West Virginia Wesleyan College and of the University of Pittsburgh. He was a past president of the Danville Education Association, the Virginia Business Education Association, the Danville YMCA, Danville Travelers Aid Society, Hughes Memorial Home and the Danville Rotary Club where he was active for more than 50 years. He was also a member of First Presbyterian Church in Danville where he served as Deacon, Elder, Sunday school teacher and lay preacher. He was a former board member for the Danville Cancer Society, local division of the American Heart Association and Danville United Way. In 1971, he was the recipient of the Danville VFW Citizenship Award for service to the community.
He was married in 1939 to Matilda Bryant Baxa, who predeceased him.
He is survived by three sons, Dr. Ernest G. Baxa Jr. of Seneca, S.C., David B. Baxa of Vienna and John W. Baxa of Roswell, Ga.; a sister, Lola Baxa of Pinehurst, N.C.; five grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Sunday at First Presbyterian Church with Dr. Charles LaPlaca and the Rev. Elbert Williamson officiating. Interment will be in Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends 3-5 p.m. Saturday at First Presbyterian Church in the Dunglinson-Roberts Fellowship Hall.

Cynthia Ann Shorter Clay
CHATHAM, Va. - Cynthia Ann Shorter Clay, age 48, of 2449 Callands Road, died Thursday, January 23, 2003, at her residence.
She was born on March 21, 1954, in Danville, Va. She was the daughter of the late Dorothy Farmer Shorter and is survived by her father, John Britton Shorter Jr. of Chatham.
She is survived by her husband, John Nelson Clay of the residence; one sister, Dr. Lisa Shorter Oakes and her husband, Alvin Oakes of Chatham; two nephews, Britton Burkett and Steele Burkett; one niece, Tyler Burkett, all of Chatham. She is also survived by her mother-in-law, Ruth Hankins of Mooresville, N.C.
She attended school at Stratford, graduated from Averett College and received graduate degrees from the University of Virginia and the University of Florida. She was a Special Education teacher and speech and hearing teacher for the Pittsylvania County public schools, Raleigh, N.C., Ft. Myers, Florida and Charleston, S.C. public schools. She was a member of Chatham Presbyterian Church.
A memorial service will be conducted Sunday, January 26, 2003 at 2:00 p.m. at the Chatham Presbyterian Church, by the Rev. Dr. Lanny Elmore officiating. The family will receive friends Saturday from 7-8 p.m. at Scott Funeral Home and at other times will be at the residence of her sister, 220 Fairview North, Chatham.

Frances Lindley Fralin
WHITE STONE, Va. - Memorial services for Frances Lindley Fralin, 70, will be held Saturday, January 25, 2003 at 1:00 p.m. following graveside rites at historic Christ Church in Irvington, Va.
Mrs. Fralin died Tuesday, January 21, 2003 after a lengthy illness.
She was born near Greensboro, N.C., February 15, 1932 and was the daughter of Francis H.and Jenny Cannon Lindley, deceased.
She is survived by her husband, Gordon G. Fralin of White Stone, Va.; three children, Gordon Lindley Fralin of Bon Air, Va. and John David Fralin and Rebecca Ann Fralin, both of Richmond; and five grandchildren.
Mrs. Fralin was a 1950 graduate of George Washington High School in Danville, and attended Converse and Averett Colleges. She was a secretary for Reynolds Metals in Richmond as a young woman. She later lived in Arlington and moved to White Stone, VA in 1993.
While living in northern Virginia, she became associated with the Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. and was named assistant to curator Jane Livingston in 1975. They went on to collaborate on shows that included "The Indelible Image, Photographs of War, 1846 to the Present." The show's 200 photographs were culled from 10,000 pictures from a score of wars and was also exhibited in New York and Houston. The New York Times called it the most comprehensive collection of war photography ever assembled.
Mrs. Fralin and Livingston also collaborated on "Changing Reality: Recent Soviet Photography," "Terra Sancta: Photographs from Israel and Sinai, Nepal and the North American Deserts," and "Odyssey: The Art of Photography at National Geographic," and a number of other shows.
As assistant Corcoran curator, Mrs. Fralin helped organize nearly 50 photography shows, including the acclaimed war exhibition that critics still cite as among the best of that genre. She also nurtured the careers of a generation of art photographers, colleagues said.
Mrs. Fralin was awarded an honorary doctorate by the Corcoran School of Art in 1988.
She was a member of Arlington Unitarian Universalist Church.
Lillian Gatewood Nethery
PROVIDENCE, N.C. - Lillian Gatewood Nethery, 91, of 3651 Park Springs Road, died Friday, January 24, 2003, in the Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born April 6, 1911, in Caswell County, N.C., she was the daughter of Samuel Gatewood and Laura Davis Gatewood.
She had lived all her life in Caswell County and owned and operated Nethery's Store on Park Spring Road for a number of years. She was a lifelong member of Bethel United Methodist Church.
She was married to Wilson Nethery, who predeceased her in 1962.
She is survived by two daughters, Jane N. Poteat and Judy Carroll, both of Providence, N.C.; a son, Kenneth Fuqua, also of Providence; eight grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.
In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by a number of brothers and sisters.
The funeral will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Bethel United Methodist Church with the Rev. Philip S. Brown officiating. Interment will be in Shady Grove United Methodist Church Cemetery.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Saturday at Townes Funeral Home. At other times they will be at the home of her daughter, Jane Poteat, 3621 Park Springs Road, Providence, N.C.

Lucille Graves Poole
DANVILLE, Va. - Lucille Graves Poole, 85, of the Piney Forest Health Care,, died Thursday, January 23, 2003. in the Piney Forest Health Care Center.
Born May 17, 1917, in Caswell County, N.C., she was the daughter of Azzie A. Graves and Lizzie Mims Graves.
She joined Mineral Springs Baptist Church at an early age. After moving to Virginia Beach, Va., she attended Mt. Zion Baptist Church in Norfolk, Va.
She was a homemaker.
She was married to Stephen Poole, who predeceased her.
She is survived by three daughters, Ollie Mae Poole and Lizzie A. Yarborough, both of Virginia Beach, Va. and Edna P. Walker of Providence; two brothers, Percy Graves of Reidsville, N.C. and Herman Graves of Pelham; two sisters, Mattie Lipscomb of Danville and Vola Russell of Yanceyville; and five grandchildren.
In addition to her husband, she was also predeceased by three brothers, Albert Graves, Willie Graves and Alexander Graves; and four sisters, Edna Graves, Annie Hudson, Addie Bell Bolden and Essie Marie Porter.
The funeral will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Mineral Springs Baptist Church with the Rev. Freddie Seabrooks officiating. Interment will be in the church cemetery.
The body may be viewed 2-8 p.m. Saturday at Fulton Funeral Home Chapel.

Barbara Eloise Minter Richardson
DANVILLE, Va. - Barbara Eloise Minter Richardson, 84, of 2526 North Main Street, formerly of Laurel Grove, died Friday, January 24, 2003 in Danville Regional Medical Center after being in declining health for eight months and in the hospital for five days.
Born Sept. 16, 1918, in Newport News, Va., she was the daughter of Louis Jennings Minter and Ada Franklin Minter.
For many years she lived in Richmond, Va., moving to the Laurel Grove Community in 1991. She was a former member of Stockton Memorial Baptist Church in Richmond and a member of the Laurel Grove Baptist Church since 1991.
She taught Sunday School and was a member of the choir.
She married the Rev. E.M. Richardson Jr on Dec. 1, 1935. He predeceased her.
She is survived by one son, William L. Richardson of Richmond, Va.; four daughters, Margaret R. Revels of Axton, Sandra L. "Sandy" Richardson of Sutherlin, Barbara R. Flowers of Ringgold and Emma Jean R. Howsare of San Antonio, Texas; 18 grandchildren and 30 great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Laurel Grove Baptist Church with the Revs. William Owsley, Edward Newcomb and A. Kyle Flora officiating. Interment will be in the Laurel Grove Baptist Church Cemetery.

DANVILLE, Va. - Lena Mae Rowland, 73, of 1773 Mt. View Road, died Thursday, Jan. 23, 2003, at Danville Regional Medical Center after one year of declining health and five months at Roman Eagle.
Born Jan. 6, 1931, in Danville, she was a daughter of James Henderson and Roxie Marshall Henderson.
She had lived all of her life in Danville and Pittsylvania County. She had worked at Dan River, Inc. for several years prior to becoming a full-time homemaker. She was of the Baptist faith.
She is survived by a daughter, Patsy Rowland Edwards of Danville; a sister, Jessie H. Hammock of Danville; a brother, James Lee Henderson of Ormond by the Sea, Fla.; three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by a son, Bobby Wayne Rowland.
The graveside funeral will be held 2 p.m. Saturday at Highland Burial Park with the Rev. Brian Edwards officiating.

Alberta N. Lunsford Satterwhite
YANCEYVILLE, N.C. - Alberta N. Lunsford Satterwhite, 83, died Friday, January 24, 2003 at The Brian Center after several years of declining health.
Born May 4, 1909, she was the daughter of Lee and Martisha Noonkester.
She was a lifelong member of Union United Methodist Church.
She was married to Gilbert R. Lunsford, who predeceased her.
She was later married to her second husband, William C. Satterwhite, who also predeceased her.
She is survived by four daughters, Connie Johansson of Novato, CA, Jackie Inman of Swansboro, Daphne Helmprecht of Greensboro and Dixie Vernon of Leasburg; 12 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren and nine great-great-grandchildren.
In addition to her husbands, she was also predeceased by a son, Donald.
The funeral will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Union United Methodist Church with Rev. Jeff Tallent officiating.
