Peggy Adkins
DANVILLE, Va. - Peggy Yates Adkins, 58, of 724 Mount View Road, died Tuesday, Dec. 7, 1999, at her residence.
Born Dec. 20, 1940, in Danville, she was the daughter of Claude Yates and Essie Harris Yates.
She was married
Nov. 30, 1969, to Henry Irvin Adkins, who survives.
She was of the Baptist faith and was employed with Dan River Inc.
In addition to her husband of the residence, survivors include five daughters, Patty Jones, Boodie Williams, Tammy Jones, Brenda Blane and Cindy Jones, all of Danville; one sister, Thelma Price of Danville; nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
A funeral will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Barker Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Henry Taylor and the Rev. Daryl Joyce officiating. Burial will be in Floral Hills Memory Gardens.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home and at other times at the residence.
Evelyn Garrett Bowyer
DANVILLE, Va. - Evelyn Garrett Bowyer, 56, passed away 1:30 AM Monday, December 6, 1999, after suffering two and 1/2 years with diabetes.
Evelyn was the daughter of Albert Earle Garrett Jr., and Evelyn Steele Garrett of Danville. Evelyn was a graduate of George Washington High School and Westhampton College.
She married
Kenneth R. Bowyer July 1965. She was a member of the Junior Wednesday club and a member of the Danville Duplicate Bridge Club. Even in declining health, she played bridge on the internet and took first place in one of their recent tourneys with over 40 tables participating. She was a member of West Main Baptist Church.
Evelyn was also an artist. She painted numerous paintings which are enjoyed by family and friends. She illustrated coloring books, three of local interest were:"Village by the Dan", "Winston-Salem, N.C., A Journal to Color", and "A Story of Old Salem".
Born June 22, 1943, Evelyn is survived by her husband, Kenneth R. Bowyer, Sr., her son, Kenneth R. Bowyer, Jr. now in Winston-Salem, N.C., her daughther, Virginia Brooke Gauldin, and her terrific grandson, Bryan Joseph Gauldin of Danville.
Also surviving are her mother, Mrs. A.E. Garrett, Jr., her brother A.E. Garrett III, her sister, Clara G. Fountain, all of Danville, and her sister Carolyn Garrett Bouldin of Winston Salem, N.C.
Evelyn was a proud, loving, wife, mother, grandmother, and animal lover. Evelyn's request is in lieu of flowers, any considerations be sent to the Danville Humane Society, P.O. Box 3352, Danville, Va., 24543.
The family will receive visitors at the 120 Parkmore Court residence.
The funeral service will be conducted at Townes Funeral Home at 2:00 P.M. Wednesday, December 8, 1999, followed by interment at Highland Burial Park.
Edgar Bradshaw
CASCADE, Va. - Edgar Joe Bradshaw, 72, formerly of 4181 Whispering Pines Road, died Tuesday, Dec. 7, 1999, at Riverside Health Care Center after 10 months of declining health.
Born March 23, 1927, in Jackson County, N.C., he was the son of Joseph E. Bradshaw and Laura Mae Nations Bradshaw.
He married
Iona Custer Bradshaw, who predeceased him Nov. 21, 1988.
He spent most of his life in the Cascade community and was of the Baptist faith. He worked at American Furniture Company in Martinsville.
Survivors include one son, David Bradshaw of Axton; one step-son, Eddie Pickeral of Texas; one brother, Jimmy R. Bradshaw of Danville; three sisters, Trellamae Clark, Beulah B. Hardy and Imogene Blanks, all of Danville.
A graveside service will be 2 p.m. Thursday at New Bethel Church of the Brethern cemetery, Pittsylvania County, with the Rev. Roy Newton officiating.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Wednesday at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel and at other times at the residence of his sister Imogene Blanks, 250 Alpine Drive.
Annie "Cutie" Brown
DANVILLE, Va. - Annie Mae "Cutie" Brown, 87, of 2305 Robin Hood Drive, died Monday, Dec. 6, 1999, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Sept. 12, 1912, in Danville, she was the daughter of James Hardy and Mary Hardy.
She married
Archie Brown, who predeceased her.
She was employed with Export Tobacco Company for many years.
Survivors include one daughter, Marsha Wood of Danville.
A funeral will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Fisher and Watkins Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Jasper Watkins officiating. Interment
will be in Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends at the residence of her daughter, 231 North Davis Drive.

Carl Edmondson
SOUTH BOSTON, Va. - Carl Lee Edmondson, 45, died Sunday, Dec. 5, 1999, at his residence.
He was born Feb. 2, 1954, in Halifax County.
Survivors include one daughter, Tabitha Smith of Altavista; six sisters, Sallie Kirby of Halifax, Glenda Barksdale of Gladys, Carol Royal, Sylvia Royal and Wanda Royal, all of South Boston and Pearl Royal of Martinsville; and one brother, Jake Royal of South Boston.
A funeral will be 2:30 p.m. Wednesday at Union Grove CME Church with the Rev. Ronald Dean officiating. Interment
will follow in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the residence of Sallie Kirby, 1094 Union Church Road, Halifax.

Peggy Groves
ALBANY, Ga. - Peggy Woford Groves, 68, of 1900 Beattie Road, Albany GA, died Sunday at home.
The funeral service will be at 10 AM Friday at Covenant Presbyterian Church in Albany GA, Dr. Paul E. Luthman will officiate. Cremation will follow.
A native of Danville, Ky., Mrs. Groves had lived in Albany GA since 1957, and was a devoted wife and mother. She was a 1953, graduate of Swarthmore College in Swarthmore, PA, with degrees in Biology and English and conducted biological research for the National Science Foundation. Mrs. Groves was an avid tennis player, having received many awards beginning in 1957. She was City of Albany Champion for many years and won the championship in 1960, while 8 months pregnant. She had been ranked number 1 singles player in the State of Georgia and number three in doubles. She also played basketball in the Albany City League for several years. Mrs. Groves was a member of Covenant Presbyterian Church, helped teach Senior Hi Sunday School and was Counselor for Senior Hi Fellowship at Covenant Presbyterian Church.
Survivors include her husband, Robert H. Groves, MD; 2 daughters, Amy W. Villarreal of Clayton, GA. and Sarah Groves Hobart of Fremont, Calif.; 1 son, Robert H. Groves, Jr., MD of Greeley, CO; sister Janice Hammett of Chapel Hill, NC; 5 grandchildren.
The family will receive friends at Kimbrell-Stern, Thursday from 7 PM till 8:30 PM.
Erline Guthrie
PETERSBURG, Va. - Erline Conner Guthrie, 62, of 16314 Chinook Drive, died Monday, Dec. 6, 1999, at Chippenham Medical Center, Richmond.
Born Sept. 16, 1937, in Halifax County, she was the daughter of Elisha Conner and Myrtle McKinney Conner.
She married
Aubrey Raymond Guthrie, who predeceased her.
She was of the Penecostal Holiness Faith.
Survivors include four daughters, Robin G. Taylor of Yale, Tiffany G. Terry of Petersburg, Cynthia G. Guthrie and Vicky Jo Wesse-Drew, both of Richmond; two sisters, Eunice Wilbourne and Gladys Moore, both of South Boston; eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by one son, Ted Arnold Guthrie.
A funeral will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Townes Memorial Chapel. Burial will be in Floral Hills Memory Garden.

Larry Guy
DANVILLE, Va. - Larry Wayne Guy, 41, of 686 Shelton St., died Saturday, Dec. 4, 1999, in Jarratt.
Born Sept. 10, 1958, in Danville, he was the son of Fitz Guy and Ruth Mayo Guy, both survive.
He attended Danville Public Schools and was formerly employed with Marshall Construction.
In addition to his father of Chatham and mother of Danville, survivors include two sisters, Joyce Guy and Clarice Coleman, both of Danville; five brothers, Jeffrey Guy, Harry Guy, Daryl Guy, Michael Guy and Irvin Guy, all of Danville.
A funeral will be 3 p.m. Thursday at Fisher and Watkins Funeral Home Chapel with the Elder Coles officiating. Interment
will be in Highland Burial Park.

Margaret Haley
DANVILLE, Va. - Margaret Virginia Dunn Haley, age 82, of 156 Gray Street, died Tuesday, December 7, 1999, at Danville Regional Medical Center after a brief illness.
Born May 29, 1917, in Damascus, she was the daughter of the late James "Red" Dunn and Ida Dunn Wilson.
She was married
February 22, 1957, to William S. Haley Jr., of the home.
Mrs. Haley had lived most of her life in Danville and carried papers for many years at the Danville Regional Medical Center. She was a member of the New Life Community Church.
In addition to her husband of the home, survivors include three daughters, June Delores Grant of East Keansburg, N.J., Yvonne Marie Farmer of Ringgold and Brenda Kay Scearce of Dry Fork; one son, James Michael Dunn of Las Vegas; seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Hubert Jefferson
GRETNA, Va. - Hubert Garland Jefferson, 85, of Colonial Ridge Apartments, No. 404, died Tuesday, Dec. 7, 1999, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born June 14, 1914, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of Paul and Beulah Adkins Jefferson.
He married
Ethel Adkins Jefferson, who survives.
He was a member of Museville Christian Church and a retired farmer.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include one son, Jimmy Jefferson of Hurt; two daughters, Peggy J. Crawley and Pamela J. Brooks, both of Chatham; four sisters, Rebecca Walker of Penhook, Charlotte Rigney of Martinsville, Shirley Sutphin of Altavista and Sylvia McGregor of Evington; 10 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by one son, Clark Jefferson; three sisters, Lottie Divers, Elizabeth Burgess, Georgia Helmandollar; and two brothers, Perry Jefferson and Jake Jefferson.
A funeral will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Colbert-Moran Chapel with the Rev. Joe Glass, Minister Bobby Waters and the Rev. Randle K. Johnson officiating. Burial will be in Museville Christian Church cemetery.

Wiley Adkins
CHATHAM, Va. - Wiley Samuel Adkins, 65, of 593 Cooper Road, died Wednesday, Dec. 8, 1999, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Oct. 19, 1934, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of Clyde Adkins and Missie Adkins Adkins.
He married
Lois Keesee Adkins, who survives.
He was a member of Museville Christian Church.
In addition to his wife, survivors include three daughters, Rhonda Bousman of Penhook, Tammy Hammock of Callands, and Tonya Gauldin of Chatham; three sons, Ralph Adkins of Penhook, Jeffrey Adkins of Chatham and Shannon Adkins of Callands; five sisters, Sadie Tuck and Helen Divers, both of Danville, Edith Adkins of Callands, Hazel Easome of Chatham and Janie Popham of Washington; one brother, Clarence Adkins of Penhook; 12 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
He was predeceased by one brother, Jincy Adkins.
A funeral will be 11 a.m. Friday at Oak Grove Christian Church cemetery with the Rev. Kenneth McFarland. Interment
will be in church cemetery.
