Virginia, U.S., Marriage Records, 1936-2014

William Traynham

DANVILLE, Va. - William McKenley Traynham, 92, of 135 Ross St., died Tuesday, Dec. 7, 1999, in Danville Regional Medical Center.

Born June 15, 1907, in Alexandria, he was the son of Johnson Traynham and Annie Singleton Traynham.

He was married to Margaret Smith Traynham, who predeceased him on Dec. 27, 1998.

Survivors include three sisters, Annie Bell Crumblin, Ethel Lee Rush and Ruby Harley, all of Washington.

A funeral will be 2 p.m. Monday at Loyal Baptist Church with the Rev. Lovell Maxwell Jr. officiating. Burial will be in Danville Memorial Gardens.

The family will receive friends at the residence. Fisher and Watkins Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Pattie Vereen

DANVILLE, Va. - Pattie Mae Brandon Vereen, 85, 142D Baskerville Court, died on Saturday, Dec. 11, 1999, in Annie Penn Hospital in Reidsville, N. C.

Born Oct. 27, 1914, in Vernon Hill, she was the daughter of Will Brandon and Rosa Coleman Brandon. She married Rockfellow Vereen, who predeceased her on Oct. 5, 1985. She was a homemaker.

Survivors include one daughter, Venaris Vereen, and one brother, Roy Brandon of Republic Grove.

The family will receive friends at the residence.

Fisher and Watkins Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements, which will be announced when complete.

Mary Wilson

DANVILLE, Va. - Mary C. Wilson, 88, 153 Holbrook St., died on Friday, Dec. 10, 1999, in University of North Carolina Burn Center.

Born March 14, 1911, in Danville, she was the daughter of the late Annie Mae Powell.

She married Henry Chappell `1and later Raleigh Wilson who both predeceased her. She was employed with Dan River Inc.

Survivors include one daughter, Ruthe McKnight of Lynchburg; two sons, Jethro Chappelle of New York and Herman Chappelle of Danville.

A funeral will be 11 a.m. Monday at High Street Baptist Church. Interment icon will be in Highland Burial Park.

The family will receive friends at 1162 South Main St.

Paul G. Watlington

GRETNA, Va. - Paul Grove Watlington, age 86, of 552 Watlington Road, Gretna, died Saturday, December 11, 1999, in Danville.

Born October 12, 1913, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of Thomas A. Watlington and Ola Shelton Watlington.

He was predeceased by his wife Kizzie Tibbs Watlington and a brother Walter Herb Watlington.

Mr. Watlington was an active Mason belonging to Polk Lodge #61 A.F. & A.M., Campbell Lodge #316 A.F. & A.M. and Anderson Lodge #258 A.F. & A.M. He served as a former District Deputy of the Thirty-Eighth Masonic District for the state of Virginia and was a Past Worthy Patron of the Order of the Eastern Star, Gretna Chapter #118. He was a retired farmer, an honorary member of the Renan Fire Department, a member of Danville Senior Citizens Club and a member of Piney Grove Baptist Church where he served as a former Deacon.

He is survived by a son, Paul A. Watlington of Murfreesboro, TN; two daughters, Patsy Hutcherson of Angier, N.C. and Paulette Adkins of Madison, N.C.; two brothers, G. Allen Watlington of Hamlet, N.C. and Donald Wayne Watlington of Hampton; three sisters, Helen Short of Gretna, Florence Dewberry of Gretna and Gloria Suttmiller of Cumberland, Md.; a former spouse, Sallye A. Watlington of Lynchburg; a stepson, Joe Tibbs of Forest; a special friend, Pearl Shelton of Gretna; 8 grandchildren, Lisa Honetcutt, Cole Hutcherson, Russell Simpson, Mark Simpson, Todd Simpson, Jessyma Hull, Paul Watlington II and Kaye Watlington; 2 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be conducted 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, December 14, 1999, at Piney Grove Baptist Church by Rev. Chuck Haley and Dr. Lynn Marstin. Burial with Masonic Rites by Polk Lodge #61 A.F. & A.M. will follow in Gretna Burial Park.

The family will receive friends Monday, 7 to 8:30 p.m. at Colbert-Moran Funeral Home.

Aurelia Chattin

CHATHAM, Va. - Aurelia H. Chattin, 81, of 16 Lynn St., died Saturday, Dec. 11, 1999, in Danville Regional Medical Center.

Born Oct. 26, 1916, in Bristol, Tenn., she was the daughter of Carl Howard and Martha Howard Nance.

She married James L. Chattin, who predeceased her.

She was a member of Wilson Memorial Baptist Church and served on the Deaconess Board and a member of the Seniors Love Club.

Survivors include one son, Ralph Chattin of the residence; seven daughters, Nannie Fitzgerald of Chatham, Martha Akers of Blairs, Diane Walters of Danville, Deborah Shaffer of El Paso, Texas, and Lillie Johnson, Shirley Byrd and Alice Godwin, all of Philadelphia; two brothers, James L. Smith and John T. Smith, both of New York; three sisters, Sarah L. Smith of Roanoke, Lucy M. Fugate and Mary Chethman, both of Orlando, Fla.; 23 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.

A funeral will be 1 p.m. Thursday at Wilson Memorial Baptist Church with the Rev. Thomas Pounds officiating. Interment icon will be in Hillcrest Burial Park.

The family will receive friends 7-8 p.m. at the church and at other times at the residence.

Howerton Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Darla Enzler

PENHOOK, Va. - Darla Sue Hall Enzler, age 41, of Penhook, went to be with her Lord Tuesday, December 14, 1999.

Born October 16, 1958, she was the loving daughter of Richard and Janet Graybill Hall of Leesburg, Florida.

In addition to her parents she is survived by her husband, Larry Enzler of Penhook; daughter, Amber Lynn Hall of Penhook; three step sons, Jory Enzler of Richmond, David Enzler of Greensboro and Troy Enzler of Colorado Springs, Colorado; maternal grandmother, Sue Graybill of Roanoke; sister, Diane Shifflett of Roanoke; two brothers, Douglas Hall of Union City, Penn., and Gary Hall of Columbus, Penn.; several uncles, aunts, cousins, nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held 11:00 a.m. Saturday, December 18, 1999, at Liberty Christian Church with the Rev. Wayne Grinnell officiating.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Good Samaritan Hospice, Inc., 3825 Electric Road, SW Suite A, Roanoke, Va. 24018 or Cool Branch Rescue Squad, Penhook, Va. 24137.

Laura Gusler

FERRUM, Va. - Laura Young Gusler, age 92, of Ferrum, passed away Monday, December 13, 1999.

Born February 1, 1907, she was a daughter of the late George Lefford Young and Minnie Buckner Young.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 71 years, Charles Washington Gusler; a son, Melvin Gusler; granddaughter, Sue Gusler; great-granddaughters Devin and Paige Williams; great-great-granddaughter, Ashleigh Swain; son-in-law, Dennis Williams, Sr.

She was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother and will be missed by all.

Surviving are four sons and daughters-in-law, Jesse and Julia Gusler of Danville, Tommie and Artie Gusler of Rocky Mount, Linwood and Linda Gusler of Martinsville, Junior and Carol Gusler of Goodview, two daughters and one son-in-law, Marie Williams of Roanoke, Virginia and Denver Atkins of Ferrum; eleven grandchildren, fourteen great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren; sister, Frances Terrell of Danville.

Funeral services will be conducted 3:00 p.m. Thursday, December 16, 1999, at Maple Grove United Methodist Church with the Rev. Susan Brack officiating.

Interment will follow in Maple Grove cemetery, Ferrum.

Friends may call at the funeral home Wednesday after 2:00 p.m. where the family will be from 7:00 until 9 p.m.

Richard Hoobler

LEASBURG, Va. - Richard Makin Hoobler, 85, of 315 Bunny Rabbit Road, died Monday, Dec. 13, 1999, at his residence.

Born in West Virginia, he was the son of Frank Adam and Margaret Copenhaver Hoobler.

He married Margaret Burgey Hoobler, who survives.

He was employed 33 years with Corning Inc., and a member of the Corning Retirement Club.

In addition to his wife, survivors include one son, David Hoobler of Elmira, N.Y.; four daughters, Joyce H. Janowsky of State College, Pa, Linda H. Davis of Wellsboro, Pa., Sandra H. O'Hara of Franklinton, N.C., and Kathleen H. Hoff of Charlottesville; two brothers, Frank Hoobler of Port Richey, Fla. and Delbert Hoobler of Elmira, N.Y.; 18 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.

A funeral will be 4 p.m. Thursday at Brooks & White Funeral Chapel with Fr. John Pettrie officiating. Burial will be in Corning, N.Y.

The family will receive friends 7-8 p.m. Wednesday with a prayer service, at the funeral home.

Charlie Manning

AXTON, Va. - Charlie L. Manning, 55, of 5899 Mountain Valley Road, died Monday, Dec. 13, 1999, at Danville Regional Medical Center.

Born June 4, 1944, in Axton, he was the son of Averett F. Manning and Lillie Wells Manning.

He married Penny D. Manning, who survives.

He retired from Sara Lee Knitting Mill, Eden, N.C., and worked with Tomlinson Funeral Home Services for years. He worked with Virginia Mirrow as night watchman for three years. He was a member Anderson Chapel United Methodist Church and Woodman of the World.

In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include one daughter, Kelly M. Manning of the residence; and one son, Jody L. Manning of the residence.

He was predeceased by one brother, Douglas G. Manning.

A funeral will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Community Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Mark Wimmer and Charles R. Tomlinson officiating. Burial will be in Anderson Chapel Church cemetery with full military honors conducted by the Martinsville Henry County Memorial Honor Guard.

The family received friends 7-9 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home and will receive friends at other times at the residence.

Gregory McDonald

TOMBALL, Texas - Gregory Dale McDonald, 47, died unexpectedly Friday, Dec. 10, 1999.

Born July 31, 1952, in Akron, Ohio, he was the son of Glenn McDonald and Alice McDonald, both survive.

He married Mary McDonald, who survives.

In addition to his parents and wife, survivors include two daughters, Margaret and Alice; three sisters, Suzanne Moore, Dianne Harr and Valerie Swenson; one brother, George D. McDonald.

A funeral will be 11 a.m. Friday at Kline Funeral Home in Tomball, Texas.

Vory Medley

DANVILLE, Va. - Vory Louise Medley, 84, of 758 E. Stokes St., died Tuesday, Dec. 7, 1999, at Duke University Medical Center.

Born June 5, 1925, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Walter Medley and Pearl Farmer Medley.

She worked with P. Lorillard Tobacco Company.

Survivors include four sisters, Gertrude Medley, Clara M. Cooke, Kate M. Kirkland, all of Newark, N.J., and Mary Hall of Danville.

A graveside service will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Oak Hill cemetery with the Rev. Jessie Swann officiating.

L.H. Brooks and Brothers are in charge of arrangements.

Harry Moore

DANVILLE, Va. - Harry Dudley Moore, 84, of 2620 North Main St., died Monday, Dec. 13, 1999, at his residence after seven months of declining health.

Born Dec. 28, 1914, in Halifax, he was the son of Willie Beverly Moore and Octavia Richardson Moore.

He married Rachel Ray Melton Moore, Aug. 8, 1936, who predeceased him Oct. 6, 1993.

He moved to the Danville area in 1930, and owned and operated Moore's Hunting and Dog Supplies for 50 years. Until 1975, he owned and operated Moore's Papering and Painting Contractors. He was a member of Temple Baptist Church from 1948 to 1968, where he served as deacon. Since 1968, he has been a member of North Main Baptist Church. He was also a member of the Pittsylvania County Hunting Club.

Survivors include three daughters Judy M. Scearce and Patricia M. Henry, both of Danville and Terry M. Smith of Wilmington, N.C.; one son Danny Moore of Hillsborough, N.C.; one sister Wilsie Moore Bowman of Sutherlin; eight grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by three brothers James D. Moore, Daniel L. Moore and W. Howard Moore; and one sister Stella M. Reaves.

A funeral will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel with the Rev. Kyle Flora and the Rev. Freddy Vicks officiating. Interment icon will be in Highland Burial Park.

The family will receive friends Tuesday at the residence.
