Raymond Parrish
CALLANDS, Va. - James Raymond Parrish, 86, of 18804 Franklin Turnpike, Callands, died in Danville Regional Medical Center on December 14, 1999. He had been hospitalized with Leukemia for three and one half weeks.
Born on June 8, 1913, he was the son of James Oscar Parrish and Cordie Eanes Parrish.
He was married
to Pocahontas Baugh Parrish, who died July 18, 1987.
He graduated in 1932, from Callands High School and remained in the community his entire life. A retired tobacco farmer, he served for many years on various committees and boards of the ASCS and the FMHA. He was an active member of the Callands Young Farmers until his retirement. A lifelong member of Liberty Baptist Church, he had served as a deacon and in other leadership roles.
He is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Danny and Kay Parrish of Callands; two daughters and sons-in-law, Priscilla and Bobby Merricks of Callands and Janet and Lee Montgomery of Wytheville; a sister and brother-in-law, Elise and Jimmy Belton of Danville; a sister-in-law, Edith Parrish of Callands; five granddaughters, Andrea M. Holly and her husband, Donald, April P. Blair and her husband, Jay, Mary and Susan Morgan, and Ashley Parrish; two great-grandchildren, Katie and Jamey Holley; three step-granddaughters Amanda, Jennifer and Holly Montgomery; and several devoted nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by one brother, Julian Parrish.
A graveside service will be held at Highland Burial Park, in Danville, at 2:00 P.M. on Thursday, December 16, 1999. Minister J.D. Hunt, III will conduct the service assisted by Rev. Charles Arnold and Rev. Daryl Joyce.
The Family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 P.M. on Wednesday at Scott Funeral Home, Chatham, and other times at the residence.
In lieu of flowers the family suggests memorial contributions be made to the Callands Vol. Fire Department or a charity of your choice.
Joseph Ray
MARTINSVILLE, Va. - Joseph J. Ray, 63, of 1119 Sylvan Ave., died Monday, Dec. 13, 1999, at Virginia Medical Center, Salem, Va.
Born Nov. 6, 1936, in Pulaski, he was the son of Leonard Jay Ray and Nellie M. Draper Ray.
He married
Juanita Ray, who survives.
He was retired from Sheppard Furniture Company and of the Baptist faith. He was a veteran of the United States Navy.
In addition to his wife of Thomasville, N.C., survivors include two daughters, Deanna Ritchie and Sharon Tucker, both of Thomasville, N.C.; one son, Lynwood Ray of Thomasville, N.C.; three sisters, Alene Hopkins and Patsy Hendricks, both of Martinsville and Nancy Philpott of Danville; two brothers, Robert Ray of Martinsville and Sherman E. Ray of Lebanon, Tenn.; and five grandchildren.
A funeral will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Roselawn Chapel Funeral Home with the Rev. Willie Conner and the Rev. Gary Hughes officiating. Interment
will be in Roselawn Burial Park, Martinsville with military rites conducted by the Martinsville/Henry County Honor Guard.
The family will receive friends 7-9 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home and at other times at the residence of his brother, Robert Ray, 1119 Sylvan Ave, Martinsville.
Algie Saunders
DANVILLE, Va. - Algie W. Saunders, age 87, of 1702 Blair Loop Road, died December 13, 1999, after a lengthy illness.
Born October 31, 1912, in Danville, Va., he was the son of Edward P. Saunders and Cora Herndon Saunders.
He was married
to Hattie B. Saunders on April 8, 1938, in Fairview United Methodist Church.
Mr. Saunders was an active member of Fairview United Methodist Church until his health failed. He was a charter member of the Henry Hardy Class, served on the Administrative Board as chairman and member of the trustees, was finance chairman and served on many other committees.
He was founder and former owner of Saunders Building Supply and was the contractor for twenty-nine churches and parsonages including Fairview United Methodist Church.
He was also a former board member of Virginia Bank and Trust and a life member of Westover Sertoma Club.
In addition to his wife Hattie of sixty-one years, survivors include three sisters, Edna Davis and husband Henry Davis, Mary Hyler and husband Howard Hyler, and Patty Brooks, all of Danville; two sisters-in-law, Dot Saunders of Danville, and Elizabeth Saunders of Norfolk, Va.; Godchild Beverly White and husband Billy White of the Whitmell Community; and a number of nieces and nephews.
Mr. Saunders was predeceased by four brothers, Clyde Saunders, J.O. Saunders, Hap Saunders and Dandridge Saunders.
Funeral services will be conducted on Wednesday at 11:00 a.m. at Fairview United Methodist Church by the Rev. O.H. Burton, the Rev. Linwood Daniel, the Rev. Norman Chattin and Dr. Tom Evans. Interment
will follow in Danville Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends at the residence.

Herbert Saunders
DANVILLE, Va. - Herbert Roland "Skip" Saunders, 67, of 1222 W. Stokes St., died Saturday, Dec. 11, 1999, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born April 16, 1932, in Danville, he was the son of the late Dillard Saunders and Frances Leftwich Saunders, who survives.
He married
Mary Lovelace Saunders, who also survives.
He was a veteran of the United States Air Force.
In addition to his mother and wife, both of Danville, survivors include one daughter, Denise S. Brown of Atlantic City, N.J.; two sons, Herbert Saunders Jr. and Norman Dexter Saunders, both of Atlantic City, N.J.; three sisters, Kay George and Laura Barber, both of Danville, Carol Mitchell of Virginia Beach; three brothers, Deacon Robert Hairston, Deacon John Saunders and the Rev. William Saunders, all of Danville; and two grandchildren.
A funeral will be 1 p.m. Thursday at Bennett Memorial Baptist Church with the Rev. Clarence Hairston officiating. Burial will be in Oak Hill cemetery with military rites conducted by the American Legion Post No. 29.
The family will receive friends at the residence.

James Scarce
MADISON, Tenn. - James Ray Scarce, 55, died unexpectedly Sunday, Dec. 12, 1999.
Born Nov. 27, 1944, in the Whitmell community of Pittsylvania County, Va., he was the son of Early Garland Scarce and Myrtle Walton Scarce.
He was married
15 years to Mary M. Scarce, who survives of the residence in Madison.
In addition to his wife, survivors include five sons, James Ray "Chip" Scarce Jr. and William "Bill" Scarce, both of Tennessee, Eric Narowski of New York, Michael Narowski and Kirk Narowski, both of California; one sister, Earlene Bliss of Danville; and three grandchildren.
He was predeceased by two brothers, Ruben Garland Scarce and Harold Curtis Scarce.
A private memorial was held Tuesday, Dec. 14, 1999, in Madison, Tenn.
Gracie Walker
CHATHAM, Va. - Gracie Hudson Walker, 75, of 401 Museville Road, died Monday, Dec. 13, 1999, at Stratford Health Care Center.
Born April 22, 1924, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Buford Hudson and Bessie Osborne Hudson.
She married
Howard Edward Walker, who survives.
She was a member of Museville Christian Church.
In addition to her husband of the residence, survivors include one sister, Christine Hedrick of Chatham.
A graveside service will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Museville Christian Church cemetery with the Minister Lory Brafford, Minister Ted Clifton and Minister Randal Johnson officiating.
The family will receive friends 7-8 p.m. Wednesday at Scott Funeral Home and at other times at the residence.
Willie Clark
TRENTON, N.J. - Willie Curman Clark, age 55, formerly of Java, Va., died Thursday, Dec. 9, 1999, in Trenton.
Born Dec. 21, 1944, in Pittsylvania County, Va., he was the son of Edgar Clark, who survives and the late Mary Wimbush Clark.
In addition to his father of Java, Va., survivors include two daughters, Frencina Clark and Jessica Clark, both of Goldsboro, N.C.; three brothers, Ernest Clark of Trenton, Danny Clark of Ringgold, Va. and Gene Clark of Danville, Va.; three sisters, Harriett Robinson of Java, Va., Karen Martin and Rosa Clark, both of Chatham, Va.
A graveside service will be 1 p.m. Friday at the Shockoe Baptist Church cemetery with the Rev. Roger Williams officiating.

Darla Enzler
PENHOOK, Va. - Darla Sue Hall Enzler, age 41, of Penhook, went to be with her Lord Tuesday, December 14, 1999.
Born October 16, 1958, she was the loving daughter of Richard and Janet Graybill Hall of Leesburg, Florida.
In addition to her parents she is survived by her husband, Larry Enzler of Penhook; daughter, Amber Lynn Hall of Penhook; three step sons, Jory Enzler of Richmond, David Enzler of Greensboro and Troy Enzler of Colorado Springs, Colorado; maternal grandmother, Sue Graybill of Roanoke; sister, Diane Shifflett of Roanoke; two brothers, Douglas Hall of Union City, Penn., and Gary Hall of Columbus, Penn.; several uncles, aunts, cousins, nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held 11:00 a.m. Saturday, December 18, 1999, at Liberty Christian Church with the Rev. Wayne Grinnell officiating.

Clarence Hensley
SOUTH BOSTON, Va. - Clarence Hensley, 80, died Monday, Dec. 13, 1999, at Halifax Regional Hospital.
He was born May 26, 1919, in Charlotte County.
Survivors include five daughters, Mary Battle, Alma Edmonds, Elizabeth Jackson and Sarah Jackson, all of South Boston, and Darlena Chappell of Alexandria; three sons, Clarence Hensley Jr. of South Boston, Linzy Lipscomb of Alexandria, and Earnest Lipscomb of South Boston; 34 grandchildren and a number of great-grandchildren.
A funeral will be 1:30 p.m. Thursday at First Baptist Church News Ferry, South Boston, with the Rev. Ronnie Keene officiating. Burial will be in church cemetery.
A viewing will be one hour prior to funeral service.
The family will receive friends at the residence of his daughter, Alma Edmonds, 1207 Poter Lane.

Ora Hughes
DANVILLE, Va. - Ora Jane Bryant Hughes, 88, formerly of 1643 North Main St., died Tuesday, Dec. 14, 1999, at Roman Eagle Memorial Home after six years there, and six years of declining health.
Born Aug. 11, 1911, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of William Jackson Bryant and Mollie Myers Bryant.
She married
James Hubert Hughes, who predeceased her Feb. 7, 1965.
She lived all her life in Pittsylvania County and Danville. She was a farmer, homemaker and of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include one sister, Clara B. Terry of Danville.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was predeceased by three brothers and one sister.
A graveside service will be 3 p.m. Thursday in Danville Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Tommy Deal officiating.
The family will receive friends at the residence of her sister, 1213 North Main St., Apt. 3. Wrenn-Yeatts Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Gregory McDonald
TOMBALL, Texas - Gregory Dale McDonald, 47, died unexpectedly Friday, Dec. 10, 1999.
Born July 31, 1952, in Akron, Ohio, he was the son of Glenn McDonald and Alice McDonald, both survive.
He married
Mary McDonald, who also survives.
In addition to his parents and wife, survivors include two daughters, Margaret and Alice; three sisters, Suzanne Moore, Dianne Harr and Valerie Swenson; one brother, George D. McDonald.
A funeral will be 11 a.m. Friday at Kline Funeral Home in Tomball, Texas.
