LEASBURG, Va. - Mary Miller, 73, of Highway 119 died Tuesday, Dec. 14, 1999, at Brian Center, Yanceyville after a period of declining health.
Born in Johnston County, she was the daughter of David Crockett and Lucy Mae Pearce Winston.
She married
George L. Miller, who predeceased her.
She worked in textiles for a number of years and attended Caswell County Schools. She was of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include two brothers, Charlie H. Winston of Hillsborough and George W. Winston of Durham; one half-sister, Thelma Williams of Fuquay-Varina.In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by two half brothers and one half sister.
A graveside service will be 2 p.m. Friday at Beulah Baptist Church cemetery. A viewing will be at Hooper Funeral Home, Yanceyville.
Raymond Parrish
CALLANDS, Va. - James Raymond Parrish, 86, of 18804 Franklin Turnpike, Callands, died in Danville Regional Medical Center on December 14, 1999. He had been hospitalized with Leukemia for three and one half weeks.
Born on June 8, 1913, he was the son of James Oscar Parrish and Cordie Eanes Parrish.
He was married
to Pocahontas Baugh Parrish, who died July 18, 1987.
He graduated in 1932, from Callands High School and remained in the community his entire life. A retired tobacco farmer, he served for many years on various committees and boards of the ASCS and the FMHA. He was an active member of the Callands Young Farmers until his retirement. A lifelong member of Liberty Baptist Church, he had served as a deacon and in other leadership roles.
He is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Danny and Kay Parrish of Callands; two daughters and sons-in-law, Priscilla and Bobby Merricks of Callands and Janet and Lee Montgomery of Wytheville; a sister and brother-in-law, Elise and Jimmy Belton of Danville; a sister-in-law, Edith Parrish of Callands; five granddaughters, Andrea M. Holly and her husband, Donald, April P. Blair and her husband, Jay, Mary and Susan Morgan, and Ashley Parrish; two great-grandchildren, Katie and Jamey Holley; three step-granddaughters Amanda, Jennifer and Holly Montgomery; and several devoted nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by one brother, Julian Parrish.
A graveside service will be held at Highland Burial Park, in Danville, at 2:00 P.M. on Thursday, December 16, 1999. Minister J.D. Hunt, III will conduct the service assisted by Rev. Charles Arnold and Rev. Daryl Joyce.
The Family will receive friends at the residence.
In lieu of flowers the family suggests memorial contributions be made to the Callands Vol. Fire Department or a charity of your choice.

Elsie Perkins
DANVILLE, Va. - Elsie Blanche Lewis Perkins, 96, formerly of 629 Cabell St., died Wednesday, Dec. 15, 1999, in Roman Eagle Memorial Home where she lived for six years, after several years of declining health.
Born Jan. 4, 1903, in the Keeling community of Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of John Benjamin Lewis and Rebecca Geneva Nunn Lewis.
She married
Clonie E. Perkins, who predeceased her April 1967. She lived all her life in Danville and Pittsylvania County. She retired from the No. 5 sewing room at Dan River Inc. after 52 years of service. She was a member of College Park Baptist Church where she was former secretary for the T.E.L. Sunday School Class.
Survivors include four daughters, Blanche P. Turner and Carroll P. Worley, both of Danville and Louise P. Brim and Geneva "Pat" P. Paul, both of Ringgold; one son, C.E. "Buck" Perkins of Danville; 16 grandchildren, 29 great-grandchildren and nine great-great-grandchildren.
In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by one grandchild and one great-grandchild.
A funeral will be 2 p.m. Friday at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel with the Rev. Todd Posey officiating. Interment
will be in Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Thursday at the chapel and at other times at the residence of her daughter, Carroll Worley, 128 Talbott Drive, off Route 41.
Gay Shelton
GRETNA, Va. - Gay Chism Shelton, age 87, of Gretna died Wednesday, December 15, 1999, in Roman Eagle Memorial Home in Danville.
Born June 23, 1912, in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of the late John Chism and Lillie Bell Mayhew Chism.
Mrs. Shelton was predecased by her husband, John Richard "Dick" Shelton; a sister, Carrie Chism Craddock and two brothers, Herman Chism and Earlie Chism. She was a member of Siloam United Methodist Church and a home maker.
She is survived by a son, Richard "R.T." Chism of Greensboro, N.C.; a sister, Orgile Reynolds of Pittsville; 4 grandchildren, 7 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Friday, December 17, 1999, at Colbert-Moran Chapel by Rev. Thomas Boggs. Interment
will follow in Gretna Burial Park.
The family will receive friends Thursday evening from 7 to 8 p.m. at Colbert-Moran Funeral Home.

Jessie Walters
DANVILLE, Va. -- Jessie Lee Walters, 77, of 1226 W. Stokes St., died Monday, Dec. 13, 1999, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Jan. 10, 1922, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of William Walters and Modell Price Walters.
He married
Bettie J. Wilson Walters, who survives.
He was employed at Dan River Inc. for many years prior to his retirement and was a member of the United States Army.
In addition to his wife, survivors include one daughter, Reba Walters of New York; four sons, Reginald L. Walters Sr., Jeffrey E. Walters Sr. and Ronnie D. Walters, all of Danville and Barry S. Walters of New York; one sister, Savannah Gilispie of Brooklyn, N.Y.; and a host of grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
A funeral will be 1 p.m. Friday at Fisher and Watkins Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Cecil Bridgeforth officiating. Burial will be in Oak Hill cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the residence of his son, 107 Kenmore Drive.
Alice "Tennie" Chaney
CHATHAM, Va. - Alice "Tennie" Wimbush Chaney, 72, of 1840 Concord Rd., died Tuesday, Dec. 14, 1999, in Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born March 10, 1927, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of James Mathis Wimbush and Mary Minor Wimbush.
She married
Henry Chaney, who predeceased her.
She was a homemaker and a member of Mount Zion Baptist Church.
Survivors include four sons, Samuel Chaney of Danville, Rufus Chaney and Henry Lee Chaney, both of Chatham, and Michael Chaney of Burkeville; six daughters, Carolyn Price and Frances Booker, both of Chatham, Louise Inge of Blairs, Alice Faye Chaney of Danville, Sarah Chaney of Philadelphia, and Leshia Davis of Lynchburg; two sisters, Mary Steele of New York and Corine Moore of Chatham; and 16 grandchildren.
In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by three sisters Alberta Price Davis, Mamie Robinson and Nora McNeal; three brothers, Clarence, Roy and Lindsay Wimbush; and one grandchild.
A funeral will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Miller Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Burnette Clark officiating. Interment
will be in Hill Crest Burial Park.

Carolyn Greenbacker
SOUTH BOSTON, Va. - Carolyn Robertson Perrow Greenbacker, 80, died Wednesday, Dec. 15, 1999, in Halifax Regional Hospital of pneumonia, secondary to Alzheimer's disease.
Born in Campbell County, she was the daughter of James S. Perrow and Maude R. Perrow.
She married
John E. Greenbacker Sr., who survives.
She spent most of her childhood in Halifax County and attended Grubby Road School before moving with her family to North Wilkesboro, Asheville, N.C., and Washington. A graduate of the Academy of Holy Cross in Washington, she attended Stephens College in Columbia, Mo., for one year before marrying Lt. (j.g.) Greenbacker in 1942. She was a wife, mother and homemaker before retiring to the family farm in Halifax County in 1976.
In addition to her husband, survivors include two sons, John Greenbacker Jr. and Christopher Greenbacker of Washington; two daughters, Susan B.G. Oller of Raleigh, N.C., and Florence M.G. Linn of Gaithersburg, Md.; and five grandchildren.
A memorial service will be 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 8, 2000, at Union United Methodist Church with the Rev. Dr. Roger Wilborn officiating.

Inez Hollie
DANVILLE, Va. - Inez Holley Hollie, 87, formerly of 169 American Legion Blvd., died Thursday, Dec. 16, 1999, at Roman Eagle Nursing Home.
Born May 19, 1912, in Dry Fork, she was the daughter of Charlie Lester Holley and Susan Brumfield Holley.
She married
Allen Joseph Hollie Sr., Aug. 19, 1933, who predeceased her in 1983.
She lived in Danville all her life and was a housewife. She was a member of Danville Primitive Baptist Church.
Survivors include two daughters, Charlene H. Stone of Burlington, N.C., and Sandra H. Dodson of Ringgold; two sons, A.J. Hollie Jr. of Danville and Carrell V. Hollie of Nampa, Fla.; one brother, Irvin Holley of Danville; two sisters, Gladys H. Stegall and Viola H. Davis, both of Danville; 10 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by two brothers, Russell Holley and Posie Holley; one sister, Mabel H. Wilson; one grandchild and one great-grandchild.

Joe Owens
MARTINSVILLE, Va. - Joe F. Owens, 79, of 1410 Rivermont Heights, died Thursday, Dec. 16, 1999, at Memorial Hospital of Martinsville and Henry County.
Born Dec. 3 1920, in Rockingham County, N.C., he was the son of Russell Owens and Josephine Harris Owens.
He married
Mabel Underwood Owens, who predeceased him.
He was a veteran of the United States Army and served during World War II. He worked with Martin Processing Dye House as supervisor for 25 years until he retired. He was of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include two sons, Wayne Owens and Thomas Owens, both of Martinsville; one brother, Howard Owens of Ringgold; three sisters, Ester O. Scearce, Gurthie O. Sloan and Bernice O. Dix, all of Ringgold; and five grandchildren.
A funeral will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Norris Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Coolidge Turner and Rev. Bobby McGhee officiating. Interment
will be in Roselawn Burial Park with military rites conducted by the Veterans Honor Guard of Martinsville and Henry County.

DANVILLE, Va. - Irene A. Stoots, 85, of Abington Place of Danville, died Thursday, Dec. 16, 1999, at Danville Regional Medical Center after three years of declining health.
Born Dec. 29, 1913, in Giles County, she was the daughter of Phillip Arthur Albert and Lula Pearl Anderson Albert.
She married
Harry McKinley Stoots, who predeceased her Dec. 29, 1944.
She lived her life in Pulaski County, moving to Danville, three years ago. She resided in Abington Place of Danville for the past 18 months. She worked for Paul Knitting Mill and Dobson Knitting Mill prior to her retirement. She was an active member of the Open Door Baptist Church in Pulaski County.
Survivors include one daughter, Anne S. Phillips of Danville; and two grandchildren.
A graveside service will be 11 a.m. Saturday in Highland Burial Park with the Rev. Lee Ellison officiating. Wrenn-Yeatts is in charge of arrangements.
