Loyd Hampton Scarce Jr.
DANVILLE, Va. - Loyd Hampton Scarce Jr. departed from this earth to his heavenly home Wednesday, January 22, 2003, to join his father Loyd H. Scarce, mother Danie Thornton Scarce and brother Albert Scarce. He left behind numerous family members and friends to mourn his loss.
Mr. Scarce was born in Pittsylvania County on January 15, 1934. He lived in the Whitmell community when he met and married his beloved wife, Mildred Frances Yeatts Scarce on January 28, 1955. Mrs. Scarce continues to reside at 2289 Whitmell School Road, Dry Fork, Va. He is also survived by loving family: daughter Cynthia Scarce Heist, M.D. and her husband Dwight L. Heist of Danville, Va.; daughter Cheryl Scarce Bowman of Whitmell, Va.; son Michael Hampton Scarce and his wife Debbie Hawker Scarce of Keeling, Va., grandchildren, Christopher and Chelsea Heist, Jason Bowman, Hannah, Lindsey and Tiffany Scarce; step grandchildren, Jarad, Travis and Andrew Hayes. Also left to mourn his loss are two brothers, Russell Hugh Scarce of Danville, Va. and Ralph Daniel Scarce of Lynchburg, Va. and one sister, Ruth Ann Glover of Whitmell, Va.
Mr. Scarce was a retired press operator from Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company and prior to that was a supervisor with Dan River Mills for many years. After retiring, Mr. Scarce was known as the "President" of the Stump Club at Mill's Store in the Whitmell community. He was also a master gardener, growing vegetables and produce for family and friends.
Funeral services will be conducted Sunday, January 26, 2003, at 2:00 p.m. at Emmanuel Pentecostal Holiness Church on Dry Fork Road, by the Reverend Kenneth Terry, with interment to follow in Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends Saturday evening, January 25th from 7-8:30 p.m. at Wrenn-Yeatts, Westover Chapel. At other times will be at the home of his daughter, Cynthia S. Heist, M.D., 2984 Mount Cross Road, Danville.
Wayne H. Scearce
DANVILLE, Va. - Wayne H. Scearce, 67, of 4905 Comelia Drive, Raleigh, N.C. and 1151 Mill Pond Road, Alton died Thursday, January 23, 2003 in an automobile accident on Mill Pond Road in Halifax County.
Born August 22, 1935, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of the late Sidney Jackson Scearce and the late Lelia Parrish Scearce.
Mr. Scearce had lived in Danville a number of years prior to having lived in several different places due to his job and having lived in Raleigh for the past 20 years. He also had a home in the Alton Community of Halifax County, Virginia. He had retired from the Jesse Jones Division of Goodmark Foods, where he was a sales manager. He was very active in community activities in both Raleigh and in the Alton community. Mr. Scearce was of the Baptist faith.
He married Shirley Lawhorne Scearce on October 18, 1952.
In addition to his wife, of the residence, he is survived by two sons, Michael Wayne Scearce of Danville and Dennis Ray Scearce of Creedmoor, N.C.; one daughter, Debra Kay Scearce of Halifax; two brothers, Harold Scearce of Danville and Marvin Scearce of Norfolk; four sisters, Thelma S. Adkins of Danville, Frances S. Bass of Ringgold, Catherine S. Trent of BurkBurnett, Texas and Linda S. Brewer of Danville; five grandchildren, Michael J. Scearce, Kimberly Wayne S. McDaniel, Melissa S. McGee, Leah B. Jackson and Betsy R. Jones; and one great-grandchild, Sydney Elizabeth Jones.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by two brothers, Buford and Leland Scearce.
The funeral will be 2 p.m. Sunday at the Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel with the Rev. Samuel Greeson officiating. Interment will be in Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Saturday at the Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel. At other times they will be at the residence of his son Michael W. Scearce, 110 Bannister Court, Danville, Va.

James Woods
DANVILLE, Va. - James Woods, 76, of 1224 Washington Street, died Thursday, January 23, 2003 at the Blue Ridge Rehabilitation and Health Care Center in Martinsville.
Born June 26, 1916, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of Olando and Sarah Wooding Fitz.
He was married to Lois F. Woods.
In addition to his wife, of the residence, he is survived by five daughters, Lois Dianne Brock and Jane Woods, both of Danville, Mable Ross and Barbara Gall Woods, both of Baltimore, MD and Rosa Miller of Greensboro, N.C.; one son, James Edward Woods of Danville; and one sister, Evelyn Towler of Baltimore, MD.
The funeral will be 2 p.m. Sunday at the Oak Grove Baptist Church with Rev. Ralph Cypress officiating. Interment with military rites by American Legion Post #29 will follow in Floral Hills Memory Gardens.

Louise Smith Clark
GRETNA, Va. - Louise Smith Clark, 69, 1120 Player Road, died Friday, Dec. 13, 2002, at Medical Care Center in Lynchburg.
Born Aug. 15, 1933, in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of Nick Smith and Ida Coleman Smith.
She was employed by Magna-Tek, Altavista, prior to her retirement and was a member of Elba Missionary Baptist Church, where she served as a member of the Missionary Society.
She was married to Walter M. Clark Sr., who predeceased her.
She is survived by three sons, Walter M. Clark Jr. of Gretna, Tommy Clark of Columbia, S.C. and Steve Clark of Kannapolis, N.C.; one daughter, Sharon Logan of Durham, N.C.; two sisters, Bertha Reynolds of Washington, D.C. and Dorothy Allen of Pittsburgh, Pa.; 13 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by a daughter, Marie Joyce Coles; three sisters, Thelma Jackson, Mattie Watts and Estella Ellison; and four brothers, Clifton, Roy, Henry and Luther (Jack) Smith.
The funeral will be held 1 p.m. Monday from the chapel of Miller Funeral Home, with the Rev. B. I. Baize officiating. Interment will follow in the Carl O. Moran Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends 7-8 p.m. Sunday at the chapel of Miller Funeral Home and at other times at the residence of a son, Walter Clark, 256 Northwest Drive, Gretna.

Virginia Arline Dalrymple
DANVILLE, Va. - Virginia Arline Dalrymple, 83, formerly of 227 Allison Drive, died Saturday, Dec. 14, 2002 at Roman Eagle Memorial Home after several years of declining health.
Born May 23, 1919, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Augustus Coleman and Julia Irene Chattin.
She had lived all her life in Danville, where she was a homemaker. She was of the Baptist faith.
She was first married to Lester Arthur Fitts, who died fighting in World War II.
Her second marriage was to Waverly Walter Hutcherson, who predeceased her.
She is survived by one daughter, Carol S. Tilley of Danville; three sons, Ted Hutcherson of Blairs, Timothy Hutcherson of Chatham and Kelly Hutcherson of Danville; six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
In addition to her husbands, she was predeceased by one sister, Mary J. Pulliam; one brother, Roswell Coleman; and one grandchild.
The graveside service will be held 2 p.m. Sunday at Mountain View Cemetery, with the Rev. Cleo Hunley officiating.
The family will receive friends at the residence of the daughter, 227 Allison Drive.

James Junior Graves
BLANCH, N.C. - James Junior Graves, 66, of 429 Guthrie Rd., died Saturday, Dec. 14, 2002 in the Alamance Caswell Hospice in Burlington, after an extended illness.
Born March 8, 1936, in Caswell County, he was the son of Willie Graves and Florine Stewart Graves.
He was a member of Macedonia A.M.E. Church in Milton, where he served on the Steward board. He was also a member of the Leasburg Masonic Lodge #648, the Caswell Sportman Club, the Caswell Pines Golf Club, the Black Golf Association and a member of the Caswell Credit Union.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served in the Korean Conflict.
He was employed as plant manager at New Generation Yarn in Gibsonville prior to his retirement.
He was married to Martha Hankins Graves.
In addition to his wife, of the residence, and his mother, of Blanch, he is survived by three sons, Vincent Graves of Fredricksburg, Va., John Graves of Elon, and Willie Graves of Hickory; two daughters, Vivian G. Lipscomb and Loretta G. Noell, both of Blanch; seven sisters, Janette G. Wade, Barbara Graves and Joyce G. Mitchell, all of Blanch, Nannie Mae G. Garland and Martha G. Smith, both of Columbus, Ohio, Cora G. Crawley of Baltimore, Md. and Florine G. Totten of Yanceyville; and nine grandchildren.
In addition to his father, he was predeceased by one son, Ralph Graves and one brother, Willie Graves.
Funeral arrangements are incomplete at this time.

Lillie White Hunt
DANVILLE, Va. - Lillie White Hunt, 77, 168 White Street, died Friday, Dec. 13, 2002 at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born May 22, 1925, in Danville, she was the daughter of George W. White and Maddie Dodson White.
She was a custodial engineer who worked for the Danville City School System.
She was a member of Evening Light Cathedral.
She married Stephen Hunt, who predeceased her.
She is survived by one son, Robert J. Curley of Danville; one brother, Amos White of St. Louis, Miss.; three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be held noon Tuesday from Evening Light Cathedral with Bishop Fred Kidd and Bishop S.P. Pool officiating. Interment will follow in Highland Burial Park.
She may be viewed 4-8 p.m. Monday at Cunningham & Hughes Funeral Home. At other times the family will be at the residence.

Leonard Reid Scearce
DANVILLE, Va. - Leonard Reid Scearce, 79, of 2309 Franklin Turnpike, died Fri., Dec. 13, 2002 at Danville Regional Medical Center after several years of declining health.
Born July 23, 1923, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of Lee O. Scearce and Dana Winn Scearce.
He lived his entire life in the Pittsylvania County area where, prior to his retirement, he was the area manager for Leeds Music Store.
He was a member of Sharon Baptist Church for sixty years, where he served as choir member, Sunday School teacher and director. He also served on the board of deacons and was a member of Woodmen of the World.
He married Kitty Payne Scearce on Sep. 29, 1942. She predeceased him on June 18, 2000.
He is survived by one daughter, Kathy S. Jones of Cascade; one son, Ronald Payne Scearce of Danville; two brothers, Roy Scearce and Frank Scearce, both of Dry Fork; four grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild.
In addition to his wife, he was predeceased by one brother, Herman Scearce.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Sunday at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel with the Rev. Allen Holder and the Rev. Donald Scearce officiating. Interment will follow in Highland Burial Park.

Mary Denny Wilson
DANVILLE, Va. - Mrs. Mary Denny Wilson of 1111 Main Street, Apartment 206 of The Stratford House died Friday, December 13, 2002 at her residence.
She was born in Reidsville, N.C., September 25, 1904, a daughter of the late Charles Harden Denny and Julia Crafton Denny.
Mrs. Wilson was a member of the Main Street United Methodist Church, the United Methodist Women, the Junior Wednesday Club and the Wednesday Club. A retired schoolteacher in Schoolfield, Jamestown, N.C. and in Greensboro, N.C., she attended the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. On June 7, 1930, she married Lawrence G. "Lefty" Wilson who died March 11, 1993.
Surviving are two daughters, Mary Wilson Parr and her husband, Wilton Parr of Charlotte, N.C. and Elizabeth Wilson Price and her husband, Beau Price of Virginia Beach, Va.; one son, Lawrence G. Wilson Jr. and his wife, Elizabeth Temple Wilson of Danville; eight grandchildren, Gary Parr, Tuxedo Park, N.Y., David Parr, Charlotte, N.C., Elizabeth Walden, Danville, Mary Temple Mullis, Nags Head, N.C., Rebecca Atkinson, Danville, Scott Price, Arlington, Va., Mark Price, Clarksville, Del. and Tim Price, Telluride, Colo.; fourteen great-grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held Sunday, December 15, 2002 at 2 p.m. from the Main Street United Methodist Church by the Rev. Gary Milstead. Interment will follow in Mountain View Cemetery.
The family received friends Saturday, December 14, 2002 at The Evergreen Room, Stratford House from 6:30 to 8 p.m.

Herbert H. Younger Sr.
GRETNA, Va. - Herbert H. Younger Sr., 71, of 2929 Zion Road, died Thursday, Dec. 12, 2002 in the V.A. Medical Center in Salem, Va.
Born Feb. 20, 1931, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of Langhorne Younger and Lilia Crews Younger.
Prior to his retirement, he was employed as a driver for Gibson Lumber Co. of Gretna.
He was a member of Fairview Baptist Church, where he served as deacon, Sunday School superintendent, Sunday School teacher and treasurer.
He was a U.S. Marine veteran of the Korean Conflict.
He was married to Delma M. Younger.
In addition to his wife, of the residence, he is survived by two sons, Herbert H. Younger Jr. of Chula Vista, Calif. and Col. Kenneth M. Younger of Alexandria, Va.; one daughter, Rita Y. Jones, Gretna; four brothers, Lindbergh Younger of Gretna, Frank Younger of Philadelphia, Pa., Walter Younger of Washington, D.C. and Bobby Younger of Columbia, S.C.; three sisters, Vernell Byrd, Virginia Keatts and Gladys Burwell, all of Gretna; five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by seven brothers, Harry, Charlie, Burton, James, Edison, Earl and Parrish Younger and one sister, Thelma Y. Dearing.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Sunday from the chapel of Miller Funeral Home with the Rev. Hubert White officiating. Interment will follow in the Fairview Baptist Church Cemetery, Gretna.

Richard Adkins
CHATHAM, Va. – Richard Lee Adkins, 66, of 3533 Greenpond Road, died Thursday, May 2, 2002, at the residence.
Born May 18, 1935, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of Jessie M. Adkins and Teenie Bates Adkins.
He was married to Virginia Gibson Adkins, who survives. He was retired from the logging industry and attended Chatham Pentecostal Holiness Church.
Survivors, in addition to his wife of the residence, include two sons, Richard Lowell Adkins and Ricky Carl Adkins, both of Chatham; two daughters, Marilyn A. Farmer of Gretna, and Cindy A. Towler of Chatham; one brother, Sam Adkins; two sisters, Jane Gibson, and Alese Gibson, all of Chatham; nine grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by five brothers, Robert Adkins, Pete Adkins, Russell "Toad" Adkins, Jim Adkins, and Wade Adkins.
The funeral will be held 11 a.m. Saturday at Scott Funeral Home chapel with the Rev. D. Wayne Prillaman officiating. Interment will follow at the Adkins Family Cemetery in Chatham.

Eulalia Blount
SOUTH BOSTON, Va. – Eulalia Bomar Blount, 93, of 1056 Virgie Cole Road, died May 1, 2002, at the residence.
Born Sept. 24, 1908, in Halifax County, she was the daughter of George Booker Bomar and Minnie Newbill Bomar.
She was married to John W. Blount, who predeceased her. She was a member of the Mt. Laurel United Methodist Church where she was a Sunday school teacher for many years.
Survivors include one daughter, Mary B. Wilson of South Boston; one granddaughter; two great-granddaughters; two sisters, Lois B. Lewis of Mt. Laurel, and Frances B. Conner of South Boston.
She was predeceased, in addition to her husband, by two sisters, Louise B. Roller, and Virginia B. Snead; and four brothers, Samuel Carter Bomar, Jamie N. Bomar, Edward H. Bomar, and John B. Bomar.
The funeral will be held 3 p.m. Friday at Mt. Laurel United Methodist Church with the Rev. Ann Tang, and the Rev. Bill LaWall officiating. Interment will follow at the church cemetery.
