Virginia, U.S., Marriage Records, 1936-2014

Dorothy Doss

DANVILLE, Va. - Dorothy Hayes Doss, 72, of 102 Stephens St., died Monday, Dec. 27, 1999, at her residence after three months of declining health.

Born April 14, 1927, in Elkin, N.C., she was the daughter of McKinley Hayes and Bertha Thomas Hayes.

She married Richard Hugh Doss, who predeceased her Oct. 24, 1998.

She was retired from Dan River Inc. and a member of Arlington Road Baptist Church.

Survivors include two daughters, Annette Doss Chesher and Joyce Doss Jessup, both of Danville; four brothers, Raymond Hayes, Mack Hayes Jr., Clyde Hayes and Jerry Hayes, all of Danville; three sisters, Jean Hayes Jones of Evington, Barbara Hayes Hodges of Danville and Joan Hayes Reaves of South Boston; four grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

A funeral will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Arlington Road Baptist Church with the Rev. Dr. Samuel Greeson officiating. Burial will be in Danville Memorial Gardens.

The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Wednesday at Swicegood Funeral Home and at other times at the residence.

Louise Edmunds

HALIFAX, Va. - Louise Easley Edmunds, 83, of 575 Mountain Road, died Tuesday, Dec. 28, 1999, at her residence.

Born Oct. 14, 1916, in Halifax County, she was the daughter of James Stone Easley and Margaret Graham Easley.

She married Paul Carrington Edmunds III.

She was a member of St. John's Episcopal Church, the Colonial Dames, Huguenot Society and the Halifax Women's Club. She graduated from Chatham Hall and Gunston Hall.

Survivors include four daughters, Margaret Edmunds DeJarnette of Washington, Louise Gilmer Edmunds of Richmond, Paula Edmunds Preskett of London, and Bee Edmunds Espey of Halifax; one son, Henry Hurt Edmunds of Atlanta; and four grandchildren.

A funeral will be 11 a.m. Thursday at St. John's Episcopal Church with the Rev. Fred Martin and the Rev. Dewitt Loomis officiating. Burial will be in church cemetery.

The family will receive friends 5-7 p.m. Wednesday at the residence.

Powell Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Bernice Green

DANVILLE, Va. - Bernice Marie Green, 75, formerly of 656 Mount View Road, died Tuesday, Dec. 28, 1999, at Riverside Health Care Center.

Born Jan. 8, 1924, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Henry Allen Green and Eva Davis Green.

She was of the Baptist faith.

Survivors include three sisters, Joyce G. Goad and Peggy P. Henson, both of Danville, and Barbara G. Burke of Axton.

She was predeceased by two sisters, Ruth R. Treadway and Margaret G. Smith; and two brothers, William H. Green and Ammul B. Green.

Townes Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements which are incomplete at this time.

The family will receive friends at the residence of her sister, Joyce G. Goad, 612 Mount View Road.

Archie Murphy

CHATHAM, Va. - Archie Roscoe Murphy, 76, of 1433 Chalk Level Road, died Tuesday, Dec. 28, 1999, at Danville Regional Medical Center.

Born June 8, 1923, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of Robert Thomas Murphy and Hassie Edmunds Murphy.

He married Erma Yeatts Murphy, who survives.

He was a veteran of the United States Air Force. He was a member of Mill Creek Baptist Church where he served as deacon, Sunday school teacher and board of trustees. He served three years on the Virginia Baptist Board representing Pittsylvania County. He was a member, past master and the Chaplain of Pittsylvania Lodge #24 A.F. and A.M.

He was predeceased by four brothers Rev. R.E. Murphy, Thornton Murphy, James Murphy and Gilmer Murphy.

In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include two daughters, Brenda M. Williams of Chatham and Betty M. Lissenden of Ashland; one son, Archie R. Murphy Jr. of Chatham; three sisters, Elizabeth M. Samuel and Eva M. Ferguson, both of Danville and Louise M. Brodie of Martinsville; two brothers, Joseph C. Murphy of Blairs and Elton G. Murphy of Chatham; eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

A funeral will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Mill Creek Baptist Church with the Rev. James Bullock Jr. officiating. Burial will be in church cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the residence.

Scott Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Eva Smoot

SOUTH BOSTON, Va. - Eva Alease Midkiff Smoot, 81, of 446 Crescent Drive, died Monday, Dec. 27, 1999, at Halifax Regional Hospital.

Born June 17, 1918, in Halifax County, she was the daughter of William Thomas Midkiff and Lou Blanks Midkiff.

She married Clarence William Smoot.

She was a member of Second Baptist Church.

Survivors include three sons, Ted Louis Smoot and Lloyd James Smoot, both of Oxford, N.C., and Kenneth Lee Smoot of Virgilina; two daughters, Edna Smoot Bray of South Boston and Carol Smoot Norman of Warrenton; one sister, Grayce M. Midkiff of Halifax; nine grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

A funeral will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Powell Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Jim Smith officiating. Burial will be in Oak Ridge cemetery.

The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Wednesday at Powell Funeral Home and at other times at the residence.

Lillian Snead

RINGGOLD, Va. - Lillian Weatherford Snead, 84, of 1188 Countryside Drive, died Sunday, Dec. 26, 1999, in Riverside Health Care Center after a four-day stay of two years of declining health.

Born Oct. 12, 1915, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of D.D. Weatherford and Annie Neatherly Weatherford.

She was married Dec. 30, 1933, to John Bennie (Buster) Snead who predeceased her Dec. 26, 1991.

She lived in Pittsylvania County most of her life and the past 29 years, she lived in the Ringgold community. She worked in the Glenwood School Cafeteria system for a number of years until her health declined. She was an active member of Ringgold Baptist Church, the Joy Club and a former member of the Glenwood Memorial Baptist Church.

Survivors include one daughter, Patsy S. Goad of Danville; two sons, Bennie R. Snead and John E. Snead, both of Ringgold; three brothers, D.D. Weatherford Jr. of Danville, William Weatherford of Ringgold and Garnett Weatherford of Alexandria; four sisters, Thelma W. Snead, Mary W. Walker and Helen W. Barksdale, all of Danville and Betty W. Atkinson of Ringgold; eight grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by five brothers, James Weatherford, Lindsey Weatherford, George Weatherford, Johnny Weatherford and Emmett Weatherford.

A funeral was 2 p.m. Tuesday at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel with the Rev. Carl Burger officiating. Interment icon will be in Highland Burial Park.

The family will receive friends at the residence.

Hattie Thaxton

SOUTH BOSTON, Va. - Hattie Sue Womack Thaxton, 85, of 610 Gravitt St., died Friday, Dec. 24, 1999, at her residence.

Born March 29, 1914, in Halifax County, she was the daughter of Charlie Womack and Harriet Carrington Womack.

She was married to Joshua Thaxton, who predeceased her.

She was a member of the Jeters Chapel Baptist Church.

Survivors include four daughters, Ida Roberts and Mary Faulkner, both of South Boston, Nannie Joseph of Boston, Emma Thaxton of Danville; eight sons, Robert Thaxton, William Thaxton, Herman Thaxton and Albert Thaxton, all of South Boston, Joseph Thaxton and Johnny Thaxton, both of Brooklyn, N.Y., David Thaxton and Rufus Thaxton, both of Richmond; two step-daughters, Eunice Travers of Cephus, Del., and Maude Bell of Philadelphia; 27 grandchildren, 37 great grandchildren and several great-great-grandchildren.

A funeral will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Jeters Chapel Baptist Church with the Rev. Roderick Fitz officiating. Burial will be in church cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the residence.

Jeffress Funeral Home Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

James Townsend

DESERT HOT SPRINGS, Calif. - James Thomas Townsend, 76, died Tuesday, Dec. 21, 1999, at Desert Regional Medical Center of cardiac arrest due to ischemic heart disease.

Born Dec. 24, 1922, in Aspen, Va., he was the son of James Thomas Townsend and Verlie Allen. He was married June 21, 1941, in Danville, Va., to Francis Elizabeth Patton, who survives.

He lived in the Desert Hot Springs area for five years. He was a maintenance supervisor for Alcoa Aluminum of America for 31 years.

He was ship-fitter for Newport News Shipbuilding and Drydock Co. during World War II. On June 30, 1944, he joined the United States Navy as Aviation Storekeeper.

He later transferred to the United States Army and served from 1948-1951 as Supply Clerk with rank of Corporal.

He received medals in the American Area World War II Victory and Asiatic-Pacific.

In addition to his wife of Desert Hot Springs, survivors include one daughter, Patricia Dale of Desert Hot Springs; one brother, Leon C. Townsend of Danville, Va.; one sister, Doris Haber of Silvis, Ill.; one grandchild and five great-grandchildren.

A funeral was 4 p.m. Sunday at Rose Chapel Mortuary, Desert Hot Springs. Burial was held in Riverside National cemetery, Riverside, Calif.

Jack Worley

DANVILLE, Va. - Jack Worley, 61, formerly of 224 Courtland St., Apt. 138, died Sunday, Dec. 26, 1999, at Riverside Health Care Center.

Born Nov. 26, 1938, in Grayson County, he was the son of Richard M. Worley and Kathleen Brown Worley.

He served in the National Guard and was of the Baptist faith. He lived in Baltimore for many years and worked for Allied Research Medal.

Survivors include three sons, Jack L. Worley and Scott Andrew Worley, both of Danville, and Kevin Lee Worley of Alexandria; one daughter, Karen Lynn Worley Foster of Bassett; four sisters, Bernice Ferguson and Marie Crum, both of Danville, Gayleen Mitchell of Texas, and Debra Ann Hillerman of Pennsylvania; three brothers, Ronnie Wayne Worley of Pelham, N.C., James D. Worley of Courtland and Richard M. Worley Jr., of Tennessee; and two grandchildren.

He was predeceased by one brother, Marvin G. Worley; one sister, Ruth Frances; and two grandchildren.

A graveside service will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Highland Burial Park with the Rev. Wayne Wallace officiating.

The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Wednesday at Swicegood Funeral Home and at other times at the residence of his son, Jack L. Worley, 125 Loretta Lane.

Beverly "Bill" Brumfield, Jr.

LEXINGTON, S.C. - Beverly "Bill" C. Brumfield Jr., 75, died Tuesday, Dec. 28, 1999.

Born in Dry Fork, Va., he was the son of Beverly Christopher and Pocahontas Grant Brumfield Sr.

He married Madeline Sloan Brumfield, who predeceased him and later married Shelby Rowe Brumfield, who also predeceased him.

He was a United States Navy veteran served during World War II and the Korean Conflict.

He received the World War II Victory Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign, Navy Occupation Service Medal, American Campaign Medal and National Defense Medal. He retired from the United States Navy as Hospital Corpsman after 22 years of service.

He attended Red Bank Baptist Church.

Survivors include two daughters, Melissa Rowe of Lexington and Linda Smith of Sharpsburg, N.C.; two sons, Wayne Brumfield of Lexington and John Brumfield of Columbia; two sisters, Annie B. Hudson of Danville and Clarice B. Hundley of Danville; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

A graveside service with full military honors will be 1 p.m. Friday at Bush River Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Robert A. Powell officiating.

Visitation will be 7-9 p.m. Thursday at Thompson Funeral Home, Lexington.

Keturah Gilbert Campbell

DANVILLE, Va. - Keturah (Toots) Gilbert Campbell, 74, of 109 Elwood Ave., died Tuesday, Dec. 28, 1999, at her residence after two years of declining health.

Born July 26, 1925, in the Callands community, she was the daughter of Luke Gilbert and Madie Aron Gilbert.

She was married May 6, 1944, to James L. Campbell Sr., who predeceased her Jan. 16, 1986.

She lived in the Pittsylvania County and Danville community all of her life.

She attended Pittsylvania County Public School and graduated from Danville Community College.

She was a licensed practical nurse at Danville Regional Medical Center Emergency Room for over 20 years until retirement.

She was a member of Pleasant View Baptist Church where she taught Sunday school and was church organist until her health declined.

Survivors include one son, James L. (Jimmy) Campbell Jr. of Pelham, N.C.; two daughters, Donna C. Allen of Richmond and Gayle C. Gravely of Ringgold, one sister, Virginia G. Jones of Danville; seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by one daughter, Cheryl C. Newton; one brother, Thomas Gilbert; and two grandchildren.

A graveside service will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Highland Burial Park with the Rev. Gilmore Hundley and Rev. Donald Mahan officiating.

The family will receive friends 7:30-8:30 p.m. Wednesday at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel and at other times at the residence of her daughter, Gayle Gravely, 444 Chaney Store Road, Mountain Hill Community.
