Virginia, U.S., Marriage Records, 1936-2014

Bernice Green

DANVILLE, Va. - Bernice Marie Green, 75, formerly of 656 Mount View Road, died Tuesday, Dec. 28, 1999, at Riverside Health Care Center.

Born Jan. 8, 1924, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Henry Allen Green and Eva Davis Green.

She was of the Baptist faith.

Survivors include three sisters, Joyce G. Goad and Peggy P. Henson, both of Danville, and Barbara G. Burke of Axton.

She was predeceased by two sisters, Ruth R. Treadway and Margaret G. Smith; and two brothers, William H. Green and Ammul B. Green.

A graveside service will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Highland Burial Park with the Rev. Mike Hearp officiating.

The family will receive friends at the residence of her sister, Joyce G. Goad, 612 Mount View Road.

Townes Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Jay McVay

AXTON, Va. - Jay Ledford McVay, 59, of 129 Home Creek Road, died Tuesday, Dec. 28, 1999, at his residence.

Born May 23, 1940, in Henry County, he was the son of Frank Clark McVay and Wilmoth Cole McVay.

He married Mary Elizabeth "Betty" McVay, who survives.

He worked in Drapers Barber Shop, Martinsville, as a barber from 1971 to 1989 until retiring with more than 30 years of service. He was a member of In Fellowship at Danville Bible Chapel.

In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include one son, Christopher Jay McVay of Bassett; one sister, Shelby Lorinda White of Axton; one grandson and two step-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by one sister, Wenonah Ward.

A funeral will be 11 a.m. Friday at Norris Funeral Services Chapel with James Pendry and L.H. Price officiating. Burial will be in Roselawn Burial Park.

The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Thursday at Norris Funeral Chapel and at other times at the residence.

Archie Murphy

CHATHAM, Va. - Archie Roscoe Murphy, 76, of 1433 Chalk Level Road, died Tuesday, Dec. 28, 1999, at Danville Regional Medical Center.

Born June 8, 1923, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of Robert Thomas Murphy and Hassie Edmunds Murphy.

He married Erma Yeatts Murphy, who survives.

He was a veteran of the United States Air Force. He was a member of Mill Creek Baptist Church where he served as deacon, Sunday school teacher and board of trustees. He served three years on the Virginia Baptist Board representing Pittsylvania County.

He was a member, past master and the Chaplain of Pittsylvania Lodge #24 A.F. and A.M.

He was predeceased by four brothers Rev. R.E. Murphy, Thornton Murphy, James Murphy and Gilmer Murphy.

In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include two daughters, Brenda M. Williams of Chatham and Betty M. Lissenden of Ashland; one son, Archie R. Murphy Jr. of Chatham; three sisters, Elizabeth M. Samuel and Eva M. Ferguson, both of Danville and Louise M. Brodie of Martinsville; two brothers, Joseph C. Murphy of Blairs and Elton G. Murphy of Chatham; eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

A funeral will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Mill Creek Baptist Church with the Rev. James Bullock Jr. officiating. Burial will be in church cemetery with masonic rites.

The family will receive friends at the residence.

Scott Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Lewis Walden

DANVILLE, Va. - Lewis Gregory Walden, 46, of 830 Stokes St., died Monday, Dec. 27, 1999, at Danville Regional Medical Center.

Born Jan. 5, 1953, he was the son of the late Shirley Liston Walden and Katherine Walden who survives.

He married Linda R. Walden, who also survives.

He was of the Baptist faith and attended the Danville Public Schools.

He was formerly employed with Meade Construction Company.

In addition to his mother, and wife of Danville, survivors include two daughters, Temekia Reeves and Michelle Reeves, both of Danville; one son, Randy Miller of Danville; three sisters, Shirley Ferrell, Thelma Walden and Darlene Walden, all of Danville; two brothers, Eugene Liston Walden of Houston, Texas, and Charlie Walden of Danville; and five grandchildren.

A funeral will be 1 p.m. Thursday at Union Street Missionary Baptist Church with the Bishop Breedlove and the Rev. Samuel Griffith officiating. Interment icon will be in Highland Burial Park.

The family will receive friends 5-8 p.m. Thursday at Beavers Funeral Home Chapel and at other times at the residence and at 735 Holbrook Ave.

"Bill" Brumfield, Jr.

LEXINGTON, S.C. - Beverly "Bill" C. Brumfield Jr., 75, died Tuesday, Dec. 28, 1999.

Born in Dry Fork, Va., he was the son of Beverly Christopher and Pocahontas Grant Brumfield Sr.

He married Madeline Sloan Brumfield, who predeceased him and later married Shelby Rowe Brumfield, who also predeceased him.

He was a United States Navy veteran served during World War II and the Korean Conflict. He received the World War II Victory Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign, Navy Occupation Service Medal, American Campaign Medal and National Defense Medal. He retired from the United States Navy as Hospital Corpsman after 22 years of service. He attended Red Bank Baptist Church.

Survivors include two daughters, Melissa Rowe of Lexington and Linda Smith of Sharpsburg, N.C.; two sons, Wayne Brumfield of Lexington and John Brumfield of Columbia; two sisters, Annie B. Hudson of Danville and Clarice B. Hundley of Danville; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

A graveside service with full military honors will be 1 p.m. Friday at Bush River Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Robert A. Powell officiating.

Visitation was 7-9 p.m. Thursday at Thompson Funeral Home, Lexington.

Bessie Gee

CHATHAM, Va. - Bessie Hale White Gee, 75, of 244 Concord Road, died Wednesday, Dec. 29, 1999, at her residence.

Born Aug. 8, 1924, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Raleigh White and Ella S. White.

She married Willie H. Gee, who survives.

She was a member of Greenrock-Gethsemane Pentecostal Faith Church.

In addition to her husband, survivors include two sons, Willie H. Gee Jr. of Columbus, Ohio and Victor L. Gee of Norfolk; eight daughters Deloris Hariston and Jacqueline King, both of the residence, Jean C. Christie of Trenton, N.J., Barbara Ferguson of Monroe, Va., Ernestine Howell of Greensboro, N.C., Mary Waller and Karen Fallen, both of Danville, and Josephine Gee of Mt. Vernon, N.Y.; two brothers James "Jimmie" White of Akron, Ohio, and Carl White of Philadelphia; 10 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

A funeral will be 1 p.m. Saturday at Greenrock-Gethsemane Faith Church with Elder Joyce Wright officiating. Interment icon will be in Hillcrest Burial Park.

The family will receive friends at the residence.

Howerton Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

"Pete" Hazelwood Jr.

NATHALIE, Va. - Gregory Bernard "Pete" Hazelwood Jr., 41, of 11235 L.P. Bailey Memorial Highway, died Thursday, Dec. 30, 1999, at Halifax Regional Medical Center.

Born June 2, 1958, in Halifax County, he was the son of Gregory B. Hazelwood Sr. and Christine Mattie Scott Hazelwood, both survive.

In addition to his parents of Nathalie, survivors include one sister, Norma Jean Bryant of Martinsville; two brothers, Michael Hazelwood of Nathalie and Sydnor "Ben" Hazelwood of Nathalie.

A graveside service will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Hazelwood Family cemetery with the Rev. Lee Roy Davis officiating.

The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Friday at Powell Funeral Home and at other times at the residence.

Julia Leonard

DANVILLE, Va. - Julia Rebecca Kluttz Leonard, 78, of 152 Dublin Court, died Wednesday morning, Dec. 29, 1999, at her residence.

Born March 2, 1921, in Rowan County, NC. She was the daughter of the late George Henry and Ethel Boyd Kluttz.

She was married Dec. 20, 1942, to Hugh Preston Leonard. She lived in the Danville community for 53 years. She received her BA degree from Lenoir Rhyne College in Hickory, NC and her Masters in Education Degree from the University of Virginia. She taught for 35 years in the Danville Public School System.

She was a member of Ascension Lutheran Church, a life long member of WELCA, a member of the church choir, active in Sunday School and served as an instructor in the original Chrismon project.

She was also a member of the Grove Park Garden Club, the Danville Area Choral Arts Society and the Alpha Beta Gamma Club.

She is survived by her husband, Hugh P. Leonard of the home, two daughters, Faye L. Preston and husband, Jim of Kent, Conn., and Ruth S. Leonard of Caswell County, NC. Brothers, George Henry Jr., Arthur Jr. and Elbert Kluttz of Salisbury, NC. Sisters, Pearl Wilson of Charlotte, NC., Ruth Monroe, Ruby Goodman, and Daisy Martin of Salisbury, NC, Edna England of Raleigh, NC and Margaret Kluttz of Spartanburg, SC.

She has six grandchildren, Robert Alexander Duncan of New York, Victoria Rebecca Duncan of Kent, CT, Gregory Arden Wyatt of Charlotte, NC, Andrew Jerry Wyatt and George Leonard Wyatt of Winston-Salem, NC, and Matthew David Wyatt of Danville, Va.

A memorial service will be held Sunday, January 2, 2000, at 2:30 p.m. at the Ascension Lutheran Church with Pastor Caldwell N. Day officiating. Interment icon of ashes will take place in Salisbury, NC at a later date.

Lucinda Miller-Miller

JAVA, Va. - Lucinda Miller-Miller, 94, formerly of Oriole Lane, departed this life Tuesday, Dec. 28, 1999, at Twin Oakes Convalescent Home.

Born March 10, 1905, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of William C. Miller & Sarah Smith Miller.

She was married to the late Nimmie Miller, who predeceased Nov. 11, 1995.

Lucinda was a homemaker and a member of Mt. Airy Baptist Church, where she served as Church Mother and honorary member of the senior choir.

Three brothers, Jezreel, Webster and Billy Miller; and three sisters, Irene, Marion and Alice Miller predeceased her in death.

She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.

Survivors include one daughter and son-in-law, Alberta and Archie Womack of Java; one foster daughter, Mattie Carter of Lynchburg; and one granddaughter, Gwendolyn Grasty of Java, three great-grandchildren, LeKeshia, Stephen and Archane Grasty, all of Java, one sister-in-law, Dorothy Miller of Gretna, one devoted cousin Sadie Hadley of Gretna, and a host of other relatives and friends.

Funeral sevrices will be conducted Friday, Dec. 31, 1999 noon at Mt. Airy Baptist Church by the Rev. Robert P. King, with burial in the Highland Burial Park, Danville, Va.

The family suggests in lieu of flowers consider the 640 Rescue Squad or the Riceville-Java Fire Department.

The family is at the residence of Mr. and Mrs. Archie G. Womack, 252 Yeatts Store Road, Java. Miller Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Lizzie Logan

NEW YORK - Lizzie Kate Davis Logan, 79, of 555 W. 151st St., formerly of Mount Airy, Gretna, died Monday, Dec. 27, 1999, in New York Presbyterian Hospital.

Born Aug. 26, 1920, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Jack Davis and Sally Miller Davis.

She married Byrdie Logan, who predeceased her.

She was employed as an educator assistant at Public School No. 28, in Manhattan. She was a member of Mount Airy Baptist Church, Gretna.

Survivors include one daughter, Retretta Chase of Jacksonville, Fla.; one sister, Marie Fitzgerald of Woodlyn, Pa.; two brothers, Sterling Davis of Philadelphia and Jack Davis of Chester; six grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by one son, Lanford; four sisters, Rolene, Helene, Janie, Florence; and four brothers, Garland, Dalland, Percy and Richard.

The funeral cortege will be 1 p.m. Sunday at Miller Funeral Home Chapel.

A funeral will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Mount Airy Baptist Church with the Rev. R. P. King officiating. Burial will be in church cemetery.

Louise Moore

DANVILLE, Va. - Louise Augusta Crowder Moore, 80, formerly of 182 Sunset Drive, died Thursday, Dec. 30, 1999, after three years of declining health at Piney Forest Health Care Center where she had been since Nov. 24.

Born Oct. 16, 1919, in Dry Fork, Va., she was the daughter of James Crowder and Althea Shelton Crowder.

She was married Sept. 16, 1942, to Garson Yale Moore Sr., who predeceased her Jan. 11, 1995.

She was of the Presbyterian faith and lived her life in Danville. She worked at Dan River Inc. in the Spinning Room, Riverside Division.

Survivors include one son, Garson Y. Moore Jr., of Greensboro, N.C.; one daughter, Brenda M. Crawford of Danville; one sister, Mary C. Moore of Danville; one grandchild and two step-grandchildren.

A funeral will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel with the Rev. Henry Taylor officiating. Burial will be in Oakland United Methodist Church cemetery.

The family will receive friends 7:30-8:30 p.m. Saturday at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel with the Rev. Henry Taylor officiating and at other times at the residence of her daughter, Brenda M. Crawford, 173 Nathalie Lane.
