Gladys Ballenger
GRETNA, Va. - Gladys Dalton Ballenger, 84, of 110 Highland Road, died Friday, Dec. 31, 1999, in Gretna Health Care Center.
Born Feb. 25, 1915, in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of Jabe A. Dalton and Carrie Ellis Dalton. She was married
to the James S. Ballenger. She was predeceased by three sisters and one brother, Thelma Tuck, Regina Jones, Edith Moore and Calvin Dalton.
She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Gretna.
Survivors include one sister, Juanita D. Elliott of Gretna; two brothers, Eillis W. "Jack" Dalton and Harold O. Dalton, both of Gretna.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 2, 2000, at Colbert-Moran Chapel by Rev. Glenn Graves and Rev. John Muth. Burial will follow in Gretna Burial Park.
The family will receive friends Saturday, 7-8:30 p.m., at Colbert-Moran Funeral Home and other times at the residence of her niece, Debbie Toney, 464 Windy Road, Gretna.
Robert Callands
GRETNA, Va. - Robert Callands, 83, of 103 Watts St., died Tuesday, Dec. 28, 1999, in Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born in Pittsylvania County, May 2, 1916, he was the son of Arthur Callands and Bessie Haley Callands. He was twice married
, first to Sadie Miller and second to Elsie Green Callands, who survives.
Prior to his retirement, he was employed by Olin Corporation in Connecticut. He was an Army veteran of World War II and a member of Mount Airy Baptist Church in Gretna.
Survivors in addition to his wife of Philadelphia include two sons, Michael and Bobby Callands, both of Philadelphia; four daughters, Dorothy Dallas of Martinsville, Cynthia Callands, Valerie Callands and Linda Callands, all of Philadelphia; one brother, James Callands of Akron, Ohio; three sisters, Marie Haywood and Evelyn Featherson, both of Philadelphia, and Ardenia Glass of Java; one step-son, Richard Green of Philadelphia; a devoted friend, Earline Saunders of Gretna and other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Isaac and William Callands, and four sisters, Lottie Bliss, Mamie Cook, Thelma Barley and Sylvia Drayton.
Funeral services will be conducted Monday at 1 p.m. from Mt. Airy Baptist Church by Rev. Robert P. King with burial in the church cemetery. A repass will follow in the fellowship hall of the church after the service.
The family is at the residence of Ardenia Glass, 1885 Mountain Road, Java, and Earline Saunders, 103 Watts St., Apt. 5, Gretna.

Julia Frazier
DANVILLE, Va. - Julia Lucille Klock Frazier, 82, of 4020 Westover Drive, Lot 77, died Wednesday, Dec. 29, 1999, at her residence.
Born Oct. 15, 1917, in Alexandria, she was the daughter of the late Derwood Klock and Richie Klock.
She was married
to the late George E. Frazier. She was predeceased by a sister, Thelma Cassell.. She was a homemaker and of the Methodist faith.
Survivors include one stepson, Lee Frazier, of St. Petersburg, Fla.
A memorial service will be at Colonial Beach at a later time.

Etta Lowery
SOUTH BOSTON, Va. - Etta Conner Lowery, 89, of 4021 Old Cluster Springs Road, died Thursday, Dec. 30, 1999 at her residence.
Born Oct. 20, 1910 in Halifax County, she was the daughter of the late Bruce Conner and Alice L. Ragans Conner.
She was married
to the late Lewis Thomas Lowery.
She was a homemaker and a member of Black Walnut Baptist Church.
Survivors include two daughters, Beulah Lowery Owen of Alton and Betty Faye Lowery Conner of Nathalie; four sons, Dewey Lowery, Ernest "Hook's" Lowery, Bernice "Bun" Lowery and Fred Lowery, all of South Boston; two sisters, Lennie C. Smith, of Petersburg and Betty C. Lowery of South Boston; 14 grandchildren; 17 great grandchildren and one great great grandchild.
A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at Black Walnut Baptist Church with the Revs. Jack Stewart and Grover Stevens officiating. Burial will follow in the Walnut Baptist Church cemetery in Cluster Springs.

Louise Moore
DANVILLE, Va. - Louise Augusta Crowder Moore, 80, formerly of 182 Sunset Drive, died Thursday, Dec. 30, 1999, after three years of declining health at Piney Forest Health Care Center where she had been since Nov. 24.
Born Oct. 16, 1919, in Dry Fork, Va., she was the daughter of James Crowder and Althea Shelton Crowder.
She was married
Sept. 16, 1942, to Garson Yale Moore Sr., who predeceased her Jan. 11, 1995.
She was of the Presbyterian faith and lived her life in Danville. She worked at Dan River Inc. in the Spinning Room, Riverside Division.
Survivors include one son, Garson Y. Moore Jr., of Greensboro, N.C.; one daughter, Brenda M. Crawford of Danville; one sister, Mary C. Moore of Danville; one grandchild and two step-grandchildren.
A funeral will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel with the Rev. Henry Taylor officiating. Burial will be in Oakland United Methodist Church cemetery.
The family will receive friends 7:30-8:30 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home and at other times at the residence of her daughter, Brenda M. Crawford, 173 Nathalie Lane.
Russell Davis
LEXINGTON, S.C. - Russell C. Davis, 77, died Thursday, Dec. 30, 1999.
Born in Markum, Va. in 1922, he was the son of the late George S. and Addie Ferloins Davis. He was married
to Lillian Scott Davis, who survives.
He was predeceased by a sister, Velmira D. Walker.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Army/Air Force and a member of First Baptist Church of Lexington.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include two sons, Russell R. Davis (Patricia B.) of Lexington and Coleman R. Davis (Joan Y.) of West Columbia; one sister, Odahilia D. Rogers of Danville, Va.; four brothers, James S. Davis, Bennet W. Davis, Allen N. Davis and Langhorn Davis, all of Danville, Va.; two grandsons, a granddaughter and a great granddaughter.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m., Monday at Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel with the Rev. Ralph Schneck officiating. Burial will follow in Danville Memorial Gardens.

Novella Barber
DANVILLE, Va. - Novella Crews Barber, 69, of 600 Main St., died on Saturday, Jan. 1, 2000, in Piney Forest Health Care Center.
Born Dec. 11, 1930, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of John Lonnie Crews and Cordie Gibson Crews.
She married
Ballard L. Barber, who predeceased her. She was a sitter for a number of years, and also worked for Danville Regional Medical Center. She later worked as a Certified Nursing Assistant at Roman Eagle Memorial Nursing Home. She was a member of Chatham Pentecostal Holiness Church. Survivors include one son, Claude Davis Jr., of Gretna; one daughter, Cordia Moore of Danville; one brother, Lester Crews of Hurt, and two sisters, Carrie L. Robertson and Mary Custer, both of Danville.
In addition to her husband she was predeceased by two brothers, Charlie M. Crews and Moncie A. Crews, and one sister, Rosie C. Moore. A funeral will be 11:00 a.m., Monday at Barker Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. D. Wayne Prillamon and the Rev. Harry Odom Vance officiating, with entombment following at Danville Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends on Sunday, from 7-8:30 p.m. at Barker Funeral Home, and other times at the residence of Mary Custer, 600 Main St., Apt. 104.

Carrie Breedlove
DANVILLE, Va. - Carrie Lee Parrish Breedlove, 91, formerly of Schoolfield Drive and Holiday Village, died Friday, Dec. 31, 1999, in Roman Eagle Memorial Home.
Born July 24, 1908, in Vance County, N.C., she was the daughter of the late George H. Parrish and Lucy Wortham Parrish. She was married
Feb. 28, 1925, to Richard W. Breedlove, who died May 28, 1975. She was predeceased by one daughter, Helen B. Walker; one son, Richard L. Breedlove; one brother, Silas M. Parrish and two sisters, Gladys P. Adcock and Nellie P. Owen.
She lived most of her life in Danville where she was a homemaker after having worked for Dan River Inc. for a brief time. She was a graduate of Henderson High School in Henderson, N.C. She was a member of the former Baptist Tabernacle for over 60 years.
Survivors include one daughter, Patricia B. Wilkerson, of Ringgold; one son, George H. Breedlove Sr. of Danville; two sisters, Margie P. Harris of Henderson, N.C. and Madeline P. Reaves of Durham, N.C.; eight grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren and one great great grandchild.
A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel with the Rev. Dr. R.J. Barber Jr., Rev. J. Richard Markham, and the Rev. Carl Burger officiating. Burial will follow in Danville Memorial Gardens.

Kathryn Franklin
SOUTH BOSTON, Va. -Kathryn Oakley Franklin, 81, of 1248 Old Cluster Springs Rd., died on Jan. 1, 2000, in Westminister-Canterbury in Lynchburg.
Born Feb. 14, 1918, in North Carolina, she was the daughter of Johnnie Samuel Oakley and Lizzie Conner Oakley.
She married
Archer Franklin Jr., who predeceased her. She was a retired textile worker and worked in sale knitting, and a member of the Black Walnut Baptist Church.
Survivors include one daughter, Janet McCormick of South Boston; three sisters, Lottie Lowery of South Boston, Esther Loftis of Wilmington, Del., and Ara Duncan of Fairfax; two brothers, Henry Oakley and Walter Oakley, both of South Boston, two grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
A funeral will be 2 p.m. Monday at Brooks Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Grover Stevens officiating, with interment following in Halifax Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends on Sunday night from 7-8:30 at Brooks Funeral Home and other times at the residence.

Bobby Garrett
DANVILLE, Va. - Bobby Olander Garrett, 66, of 843 Pine St., died Thursday, Dec. 30, 1999, in the Stratford Health Care Center.
Born June 14, 1933, in Danville, he was the son of Howard Garetts Sr. and Harriett Hayes Garrett Lee, who survives.
In addition to his mother of Danville, he is survived by three sisters, Mable Anderson, Harriett Poteat, and Clara Fuller, all of Danville; one brother, Howard Garrett Jr. of Danville, and a host of other relatives and friends.
A funeral will be Monday 2 p.m. at Fisher & Watkins Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Lovell Maxwell officiating. Interment
will follow in Oak Hill cemetery. The family will receive friends at the residence.
