Russell Koger
DANVILLE, Va. - Russell P. Koger, 76, of 409 Locust Lane, died on Thursday, Dec. 30, 1999, in Piney Forest Health Care.
Born Aug. 19, 1925, in Danville, he was the son of Charlie L. Koger and Maria Watson. He married
Margaret Koger, who srvives. He worked for Dan River Inc., as a machinist, and was a member of White Rock Baptist Church.
In addition to his wife, survivors include two daughters, Margaret Person of Queens, N.Y., and Betty Carol Koger, of Bronx, N.Y.; one brother, Charlie Koger of Ringgold, and two sisters, Marie Brown of White Plains, N.Y., and Geneva Stephens of Danville. A funeral will be 3 p.m. Sunday, at White Rock Baptist Church with the Rev. Walter Tinsley officiating. Interment
will follow in Oak Hill cemetery. Viewing will be at the church from 2:30 to 3:00 on Sunday.

Julia Leonard
Born March 2, 1921, in Rowan County, NC. She was the daughter of the late George Henry and Ethel Boyd Kluttz.
She was married
Dec. 20, 1942, to Hugh Preston Leonard. She lived in the Danville community for 53 years. She received her BA degree from Lenoir Rhyne College in Hickory, NC and her Masters in Education Degree from the University of Virginia. She taught for 35 years in the Danville Public School System.
She was a member of Ascension Lutheran Church, a life long member of WELCA, a member of the church choir, active in Sunday School and served as an instructor in the original Chrismon project. She was also a member of the Grove Park Garden Club, the Danville Area Choral Arts Society and the Alpha Beta Gamma Club.
She is survived by her husband, Hugh P. Leonard of the home, two daughters, Faye L. Preston and husband, Jim of Kent, Conn., and Ruth S. Leonard of Caswell County, NC. Brothers, George Henry Jr., Arthur Jr. and Elbert Kluttz of Salisbury, NC. Sisters, Pearl Wilson of Charlotte, NC., Ruth Monroe, Ruby Goodman, and Daisy Martin of Salisbury, NC, Edna England of Raleigh, NC, Patricia Peeler of Centerville, and Margaret Kluttz of Spartanburg, SC. She has six grandchildren, Robert Alexander Duncan of New York, Victoria Rebecca Duncan of Kent, CT, Gregory Arden Wyatt of Charlotte, NC, Andrew Jerry Wyatt and George Leonard Wyatt of Winston-Salem, NC, and Matthew David Wyatt of Danville, Va.
A memorial service will be held Sunday, January 2, 2000, at 2:30 p.m. at the Ascension Lutheran Church with Pastor Caldwell N. Day officiating. Interment
of ashes will take place in Salisbury, NC at a later date.

Barbara Reeves
DANVILLE, Va. - Barbara Lee Reeves, 60, of 1008 Paxton St., died on Thursday, Dec. 30, 1999, in Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Dec. 20, 1939, in Danville, she was the daughter of Robert Neal and Mabel Smith Neal, who both survive.
She married
Marcellous Reeves Sr., who survives. She worked as a laborer for Lorrilard Tobacco Co.
In addition to her husband and parents, survivors include one son, Marcellous Reeves Jr.; five daughters, Gloria Reid, Debra Reeves, Linda Walden, Beverly Jefferys and Barbara Reeves; three brothers, Theodore Neal, Billy Smith and Sherman Neal; one sister, Geraldine Pannell; 13 grandchildren, and 14 great grandchildren. All survivors are of Danville.
A funeral will be 1 p.m. Monday, at Cunningham & Hughes Memorial Chapel, with the Bishop Major Hairston officiating. Interment
will follow in Highland Burial Park.
Viewing will be at the residence from 4-9 p.m.

Flossie Stewart
DANVILLE, Va. - Flossie Lean Pruitt Stewart, 84, of 1467 Myrtle Ave., died Thursday, Dec. 30, 1999 at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born June 20, 1915, in Danville, she was the daughter of John James Pruitt and Elsie Emerson Pruitt.
She married
William Aubrey Stewart, who predeceased her.
She was of the Baptist faith, and a lover and writer of poetry. She worked at Dan River Inc., 8A Dress, for 43 years.
Survivors include one son, W. Albert Stewart of San Francisco; seven daughters, Anne M. Witt, E. Elaine Harper, Gloria J. Hayes, and Diane Williams, all of Danville, Delores J. Briggs of Bayboro, N.C., Joan M. Gray of Ringgold, and Patricia E. Burke of Keeling; one brother, Harry L. Pruitt of Danville; 24 grandchildren, 53 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by two sisters, Doris Lewis and Ruth H. Pruitt, and three children, James Calvin, and twins, Donnie Ray and Donna Kay.
A funeral will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Barker Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Daryl Joyce officiating. Burial will be in Schoolfield cemetery.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Saturday at Barker Funeral Home and at other times at the residence.
Josie Tate
DANVILLE, Va.- Josie Fuller Tate, 76, of 3 Winstead Drive, died Thursday, Dec. 30, 1999 at her residence. She had been in declining health for two years.
Born May 10, 1923 in Caswell County, N.C., she was the daughter of the late George Fuller and Mattie Kirks Fuller.
She was married
Dec. 24, 1952 to Hedrick S. Tate, who survives.
She was predeceased by two sisters, Annie Travis and Isabelle Travis; two brothers, Clay Fuller and Robert Fuller and a step mother, Ethel Fuller.
She lived most of her life in Danville where she worked in the spinning room of Dan River Mills for approximately 36 years before retiring at age 62.
She was a member of Stokesland United Methodist Church and United Methodist Church Women's Club.
In addition to her husband of the residence, survivors include one son, Wayne H. Tate of Danville.
A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at Stokesland United Methodist Church with the Rev. Greg West officiating. Burial will follow in Floral Hills Memory Gardens.
The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 p.m. Saturday at Swicegood Funeral Home and at other times at the residence.
Doris Taylor
DANVILLE, Va. - Mrs. Doris Kinney Taylor, age 80, formerly of 154 Martin Avenue, died early Saturday morning January 1, 2000 at Riverside Health Care Center where she had resided for the past six years.
Mrs. Taylor was born in Winder, Georgia on November 23, 1919, a daughter of the late Charles Kinney and Corina Roberts Kinney.
She was predeceased by her husband, Walter Lee Taylor who died December 21, 1990.
Mrs. Taylor had spent most of her life in Danville. She was a homemaker and a member of Christ The King Lutheran Church. Survivors include two sons, Tom Taylor and daughter in law, Harriet Taylor of Danville, and Wayne Taylor and daughter in law, Mary Ann Taylor of Salem, and six grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren.
Graveside funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 P.M. Sunday at Highland Burial Park by the Rev. Jim Kleinfelter. Hollis Bell
DANVILLE, Va. - Hollis Lee Bell, 83, of 4530 Westover Dr., died Sunday, Jan. 2, 2000, at the Brian Center in Yanceyville, N.C., after 18 months of declining health.
Born May 16, 1916, in Lexington, N.C., he was the son of Edgar Bell and Lorena Cross Bell.
He was married
to Mary Lloyd Bell, who survives. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving during WWII. He spent most of his life in Danville, where he was a retired supervisor with Dan River, and a member of Schoolfield Baptist Church.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include one son, Raymond Bell of Annapolis Md.; one foster son, William Morris of Danville; one brother, Rayvon Bell of Lexington, N.C.; two sisters, Edna Mize and Maxine Dry of Lexington, N.C.; five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
A funeral will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. David Turbyfill. Interment
will follow at Danville Memorial Gardens.

Matthew Ferguson
DANVILLE, Va. - Matthew Edward Ferguson, 67, of 1100 West Stokes St., died on Friday, Dec. 31, 1999.
Born March 5, 1932, in Pittsylvania Co., he was the son of Edward Ferguson, who survives, and Willie Ann Owens Ferguson.
He married
Jessie Ferguson, who survives. He was employed with the City of Danville for many years prior to his retirement.
In addition to his wife of the residence and his father of Danville, survivors include three daughters, Sheila Ferguson, Angela Ferguson, and Paula Ferguson, all of Danville; one son, Michael Ferguson of Winston-Salem, N.C.; three sisters, Loveleen Thompson of Woodside, N.Y., Janie Hunt of Danville, and Mable Merritt of East Point, Ga.; three brothers, Maceo Ferguson of Jamaica, N.Y., Raymond Ferguson of Brooklyn, N.Y., and James Ferguson of Vance, S.C., three grandchildren, and a host of other relatives and friends.
A funeral will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Bennett Memorial Baptist Church with the Rev. Clarence Hairston, Jr. officiating. Interment
will follow in Oak Hill cemetery.

Melvin Jefferson
DANVILLE, Va. - Melvin Wayne Jefferson, 59, of Danville, died on Friday, Dec. 31, 1999, in Danville Regional Medical Center after several years of declining health and three days in the hospital.
Born June 7, 1940, in Danville, he was the son of Robert Jefferson and Bertie Harris Jefferson. He worked as a barber, and was of the Baptist faith, and was also a member of the Ramah Masonic Lodge #70, where he was a past master.
Survivors include one daughter, Amy Jo Crews of Danville, and one son, Bradley Wayne Jefferson of Raleigh, N.C., and one grandchild.
The funeral and interment will be 11 a.m. Monday at Highland Burial Park, with the Rev. A. Kyle Flora officiating.
The family will receive friends at the residence of his daughter, 424 Wyatt Drive.

Clarence Edward Mayhew
GRETNA, Va. - Clarence Edward Mayhew, 83, of 1780 Boxwood Road, Gretna died Saturday, January 1, 2000, in Virginia Baptist Hospital.
Born June 19, 1916 in Pittsylvania County he was a son of the late William Henry Mayhew and Nannie Robertson Mayhew. He was predeceased by six brothers, Ashby, Roscar, Oscar, Benny, Earl, and Dewey. Mr. Mayhew was a member of Zion United Methodist Church and retired from farming and Klopman.
He is survived by his devoted wife of sixty-three years, Annie Gatewood Mayhew of the residence; three sons and daughters-in-law, Wayne and Emily Mayhew of Hurt, Roger and Margot Mayhew of Gretna and Larry and Carole Jo Mayhew of Standardsville; one daughter and son-in-law, Faye and Dennis Craddock of Henderson, NC; two sisters, Dorothy Compton of Gretna and Venice Gammon of Hampton Roads; 13 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. His memory will live on in the hearts of those who loved him forever and he will be greatly missed.
Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Tuesday, January 4, 2000 at Zion United Methodist Church by Rev. Jess Staton and Rev. R.G. Rowland. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

WINCHESTER, Va. - Doris "Peggy" Simmons McDaniel, 62, of 1405-31 Front Royal Pike, died Saturday, Jan. 1, 2000, in the Winchester Medical Center after several years of declining health.
Born Sept. 6, 1937, she was a daughter of Weldon Simmons, who survives, and the late Bessie Dodd Simmons, and the stepdaughter of Virginia Simmons, who also survives.
She married
Merle McDaniel, who survives. She spent most of her life in the Lynchburg and Fredericksburg area where she was a homemaker. She was of the Baptist faith.
In addition to her husband of the residence, and her father and stepmother of Keeling, survivors include one son, Michael McDaniel of Lynchburg; two daughters, Brenda Branham of Pound, and Barbara Wilson of Lynchburg; two sisters, Betty Clifton of Danville, and Lois Rowland of Chatham, and three grandchildren.
A funeral will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Roy Taylor officiating. Interment
will follow at Highland Burial Park.
