Clarence Stanley
DANVILLE, Va. - Clarence Wiseman Stanley, 83, of 38 Stokesland Ave., died on Wednesday, Jan. 5, 2000, in Danville Regional Medical Center after one day there and two years of declining health.
Born June 10, 1916 in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of William Stanley and Rosa Hutson Stanley.
He was married
to Alma Wattlington Stanley in August 1936, who survives. He spent most of his life in Danville where he worked as a fixer in the #1 card room for Dan River for 46 years, retiring at the age of 62. He was a charter member of Holland Road Baptist Church and had been attending Schoolfield Baptist Church for the past few years.
In addition to his wife, survivors include one daughter, Carolyn Stanley McGuire of Blairs; two sons, Phillip Kent Stanley of Danville, and Tommy Stanley of Ringgold; three sisters, Lucille Strader, Pearl Garrett and Minerva Pruitt, all of Danville; four grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
He was predeceased by one brother, William Stanley, and one sister, Mary Gatewood.
A graveside funeral will be 11:00 a.m. Friday at Danville Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Dr. Lee Harris officiating.
The family received friends at Swicegood Funeral Home on Thursday from 7-8:30 p.m., and will receive friends at other times at the residence.

Garry Taylor
CHATHAM, Va. - Garry H. Taylor, 87, of 264 Concord Road, died on Sunday, Jan. 2, 2000, in the Brian Center, Yanceyville, N.C..
Born Oct. 14, 1912, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of Grover Cleveland Taylor and Mariah Allen Taylor.
He was married
to Willie Catherine Coleman, who predeceased him. He was a member of Antioch Baptist Church and of the Deacon Board. He was a Sunday School Teacher, Church Clerk, and Treasurer. He was retired from Saunders Lumber Company, and was a watch and clock maker, and gun smith. He was also a veteran of WWII and the Korean Conflict.
Survivors include two sons, Rev. Ben Logan of Atlantic City, N.J., and Garry W. Taylor of Egg Harbor Township, N.J.; four daughters, Marilyn Taylor of Newport News, Brenda Taylor Mitchell Garrison of Chatham, Sandra Taylor Braithwaite of Atlanta, Gwendolyn Tucker of Gretna; two sisters, Isabella Taylor of New York, and Lillian Lanier, of Donora, Pa.; 14 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren.
A funeral will be 1 p.m. Saturday at Antioch Baptist Church with the Rev. Ben Logan officiating. Interment
with military rites by VFW Post #4165 and DAV Chapter #46 of Altavista will follow in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 7-8 p.m. at the church.

Willie Turner
DANVILLE, Va. - Willie Turner, 76, of 208 North Point Lane, Apt. 101, died on Wednesday, Jan. 5, 2000, at the residence.
Born March 31, 1923, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of Douglas Turner and Alice Cardwell Turner.
He was married
to Gettie Johnson Turner, who survives. He was employed with Kendall Lumber Company for over 35 years.
In addition to his wife, survivors include one son, Willie Turner Jr. of Danville; four sisters, Louise Fitzgerald of Java, Mattie Turner of Philadelphia, Annie Womack of Chester, Pa., and Evelyn Turner of Mount Vernon, N.Y.; one brother, Oscar Turner of Philadelphia, and one grandchild.
A funeral will be 2:00 p.m. Saturday at Shockoe Baptist Church in Java, with the Rev. George Pass officiating. Interment
will follow in Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends at the residence.

Thelma Doss
CLOVER, Va. - Thelma Anderson Doss, 86, of 1007 Neal’s Corner Rd. died Friday, Jan. 7, 2000, at Halifax Regional Hospital.
Born March 16, 1913, in Halifax Co., she was the daughter of Nathan Comer Anderson and Myrtle Hardie Anderson.
She married
Wiiliam Doss. She was a member of Hunting Creek Baptist Church and Woodmen of the World Camp 136.
Survivors include three sons, William Doss of Dunkirk, Md., Edward Doss of Clover and Henry Doss of Chester; one daughter, Grey D. Glass of Nathalie; three brothers, Dewey Anderson, Charlie Anderson, and Lewis Anderson, all of Nathalie; one sister, Edna Bagley of Kenbridge; 11 grandchildren, and 12 great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by one daughter, Becky Saunders, four brothers, and one sister.
A funeral will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Hunting Creek Baptist Church with the Rev. Lee Roy Davis and the Rev. H.V. Conner officiating.
Interment will follow in the church cemetery.

Lois W. Gilbert
DANVILLE, Va. - Mrs. Virginia Lois Weatherford Gilbert, age 73, of 130 Kenmore Drive, died Thursday morning, January 6, 2000, in the Duke University Medical Center.
She was born on September 30, 1926, in the Bachelors Hall Community of Pittsylvania County, Virginia, a daughter of Charles Henry Weatherford and Ellen Beggarly Weatherford.
Mrs. Gilbert was married
on November 12, 1946 to Claude Ross Gilbert who predeceased her.
She was employed with Dan River, Inc. at the Schoolfield Division before her retirement. She was a member of the Arlington Baptist Church.
Mrs. Gilbert is survived by three daughters, Linda G. Cook and her husband, Wayne, Joan G. Lovern and her husband, Mike, and Kathy G. Harville and her husband, John; a son, Tony Ray Gilbert and his wife, Kathy, all of Danville; a sister, Marion W. Green of Danville, Va. a brother, L. Elbert Weatherford of Bachelors Hall; also 10 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Gilbert was predeceased by one brother, Harvey O. Weatherford.
Funeral services will be held Sunday, January 9, 2000, at 2:00 p.m. from Townes Memorial Chapel by the Rev. Dr. Samuel Greeson.
Interment will be in Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends at Townes Funeral Home Saturday night from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. and other times will be at the residence of Mr. and Mrs. Wayne Cook, 162 Brantley Place.
Jessie Anderson Jr.
DANVILLE, Va. - Jessie Anderson Jr., 67, of 5244 Golf Club Road, died Friday, Jan. 7, 2000, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born June 19, 1932, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of Jessie Anderson Sr.
He married
Hattie Anderson, who survives.
He was a labor worker with Diamond Tobacco Company and a member of White Oak Grove Baptist Church.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include three daughters, Samantha Jenkins of Richmond, Joyce Anderson and JoAnne Anderson, both of Danville; three brothers, William Anderson of Halifax, Freddie Anderson and Doug Anderson, both of Blairs; three sisters, Sallie Hubbard of Dry Fork; May Lizzie Glass of Sutherlin and Katie L. Anderson of Newark, N.J.; and four grandchildren.
A funeral will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at White Oak Grove Baptist Church with the Rev. Edward Pope officiating. Interment
will be in Highland Burial Park.
A viewing will be 4-8 p.m. Tuesday at Cunningham and Hughes Funeral Home Chapel.

Randy Dodd
DANVILLE, Va. - Randy Dean Dodd, 42, of 437 Ridgecrest Drive, died Friday, Jan. 7, 2000, at his residence.
Born July 20, 1957, in Roanoke, he was the son of Albert Lester Dodd and Virginia Lee Peavy Dodd, both survive.
He was of the Baptist faith and was employed with Harvey’s Chop Shop.
In addition to his parents, survivors include two brothers, K. Wayne Dodd of Danville, and Jerry Lee Dodd of Staunton.
A funeral will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Barker Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Stan Lawton and the Rev. Rick Withrow officiating. Interment
will be in Highland Burial Park.

Hugh Ferrell
DANVILLE, Va. - Hugh Walter Ferrell, 77, of 450 Piney Forest Road, died Tuesday, Jan. 4, 2000, at Piney Forest Nursing Home.
Born May 15, 1922, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of Henry Ferrell and Anna Skipper.
He married
Elizabeth Ferrell, who predeceased him.
He was a labor worker with Dan River Inc.
Survivors include one son, Jesse L. Ferrell of Danville; two daughters, Yvonne Pritchett and Rosa Mays, both of Danville; two brothers, Charlie Ferrell of Blairs and Joe Ferrell of Danville; two sisters, Josephine Robinson of Ringgold and Mary Ferrell of Queens, N.Y.; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
A funeral will be 2 p.m. Monday at Laurel Grove Baptist Church with Dr. James Cabell officiating. Interment
will be in Highland Burial Park.
A viewing will be 4-8 p.m. Sunday at Cunningham and Hughes Funeral Home.

Sandra Gravely
MARTINSVILLE, Va. - Sandra Yost Gravely, 52, of 101 Mill Trace Rd., King’s Grant Community, died Thursday, Jan. 6, 2000, at the residence.
Born July 11, 1947, in Bluefield, W.Va., she was a daughter of Fred Randolph Yost Sr. and Ruth Lester Lee.
She married
William O. Gravely, of the residence, who survives. She was a former Nationally Certified and Virginia State Licensed Vocational Evaluator with the Virginia Dept. of Rehabilitative Services, doing extensive work with the blind and hearing impaired. She earned a master’s degree from Radford University and was a member of National Honor Societies of Phi Kappa Phi, Pi Gamma Mu, and Kappa Delti Pi. She was a member of the Episcopal Church of the Epiphany and was a liscensed Chalice Bearer and Lay Eucharist Minister. She was also a member of the Women’s Aglow, Gideon’s Auxillary and the National Rehabilitation Association.
In addition to her husband and her mother, of Bluefield, she is survived by a brother, Randy Yost of Jacksonville, Fla.; one step-daughter, Katherine Danielson of Chesterfield and one grandson.
A graveside funeral will be 4 p.m. Sunday at Green Hill cemetery with the Rev. James Mathieson officiating.
The family will receive friends Saturday at Townes Funeral Home from 4-5 p.m.

Russell Pruitt
DANVILLE, Va. - Russell Pruitt, 56, of 609 Worsham St., Apt. A, died Friday, Jan. 7, 2000, at the residence, after three years of declining health.
Born April 23, 1943, in Pittsylvania Co., he was the son of George Pruitt and Myrtle Pruitt.
He spent most of his life in Danville.
Survivors include two sons, Russell Pruitt, Jr. of Ridgeway and Bobby Pruitt of Chatham; one daughter, Jo Anna Tierney of Decatur, Ind.; one step daughter, Tina Nicklow of Danville; five brothers, Jack Pruitt, Ricky Pruitt and June Pruitt, all of Ringgold, Paul Pruitt of Blairs, and Joe Pruitt of Boydton; three sisters, Sally Scearce of Yanceyville, N.C., Elsie Setliff of Danville, and Nancy Rowland of Roxboro, N.C.; one half brother, John Pruitt of Yanceyville, N.C.; one half sister, Mamie Hunt of Greensboro, N.C., and seven grandchildren.
He was predeceased by one brother Blair Pruitt.
A graveside funeral will be 4 p.m. Sunday at Floral Hills Memory Gardens with the Rev. Tim Whiteheart officiating.
The family will receive friends at Swicegood Funeral Home on Saturday from 7-8:30 p.m. and other times at the residence of Jack Pruitt, 4052 South Boston Rd., Ringgold.
