John Thrift Sr.
SOUTH BOSTON, Va. - John Payne Thrift Sr., 80, of 1209 North Main St., died Tuesday, Jan. 7, 2000, at his residence.
Born March 25, 1919, in Brandy Station, he was the son of Douglas Bocock Thirft and Crimora Payne Thrift.
He married
Blanche Brooks Thrift, who survives.
He graduated in 1941 from Virginia Military Institute. He was a veteran of the United States Army having served during World War II. He was employed with E.I. Dupont Co. in Waynesboro until his retirement in 1971.
In addition to his wife of South Boston, survivors include one daughter, Doris S. Thrift Coombs of Richmond; one son, John P. Thrift Jr. of South Boston; one brother Kavanaugh Y. Thrift of Norfolk; and four grandchildren.
A graveside service will be 1 p.m. Sunday at Fairview cemetery, Culpepper, with the Rev. Allan Hooker officiating.
Dylan Anderson
DANVILLE, Va. - Dylan Shayne Anderson, 3, of 181 Banner St., died Saturday, Jan. 8, 2000, as a result of a house fire.
Born Jan. 23, 1996, in Chapel Hill, N.C., he was the son of Arlene Anderson Fuqua, who survives.
He spent most of his life in Danville.
In addition to his mother of Danville, survivors include one brother Michael W. Fuqua of the residence; and his maternal grandparents Joseph and Jacqueline Anderson, both of Danville.
A graveside service will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Floral Hills Memory Gardens with the Rev. Dr. John C. Gentry officiating.
The family will receive friends at the residence of Allen Anderson, 199 Banner St.

Frances Clifton
DANVILLE, Va. - Frances Bell Dodd Clifton, 75, formerly of 209 Campbell St., died Sunday, Jan. 9, 2000, at Roman Eagle Memorial Nursing Home.
Born July 15, 1924, in Halifax County, she was the daughter of John Willie Dodd and Alice Bell Slayton Dodd.
She married
Charlie Clifton, who predeceased her.
She worked at Roman Eagle Memorial Nursing Home for 17 years as a C.N.A. before retiring. She was a member of Temple Baptist Church and the last survivor of her immediate family.
In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by one son John Allen Clifton.
A graveside service will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at Highland Burial Park with the Rev. Roy Newton officiating.

Katherine Flynn
DANVILLE, Va. - Katherine Simpson Flynn, 84, formerly of 281 Carolina Ave., died Sunday, Jan. 9, 2000, in the Stratford Health Care Center after several years of declining health.
Born Feb. 11, 1915, in Raeford, N.C., she was a daughter of Alf Haywood Simpson and Ruth Hassell Simpson.
She married
Harry Weisiger Flynn, who predeceased her Sept. 27, 1997.
She was raised in Burlington, N.C., and attended Radford and Elon College. In Burlington, she was a member of the Alamance County Service League, Burlington Junior Woman’s Club and the First Presbyterian Church. She moved to Danville in 1950, and served as a volunteer for the Danville Regional Medical Center, a docent of the Danville Museum of Fine Arts and History, and a member of the Wednesday Club. She was also a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Danville, where she was Sunday School teacher, an honorary life member of the Women of the Church.
Survivors include one daughter Helen Flynn Walton of Burlington, N.C.; one son Dr. Harry Weisiger Flynn, Jr. of Miami, Fla.; five grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Clifton Jones Sr.
JAVA, Va. - Clifton Jones Sr. 80, of 3140 Coleman Mt. Road, died Thursday, Jan. 6, 2000, at his residence.
Born July 12, 1919, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of Willis Jones and Melinda Jones.
He married
Nettie Guy Jones, who survives.
He was a retired farmer and a member of Greater Triumph Missionary Baptist Church.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include four daughters Nellie G. Poteat of Bladenburg, Md., Minnie Pearl Jones, Cynthia O. Jones and Ida Mae Harris, all of Danville; four sons Roy Jones of Java, Larry Jones of Blairs, Paul Jones and Clifton Jones, Jr., both of Washington D.C.; two sisters Lover Katie Guy of Chatham and Irene Harris of Martinsville; two brothers Harvey Jones and George Jones, both of Chatham; 11 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by one son Clyde Jones and one daughter Juanita Jones.
A funeral will be 1 p.m. Monday at Greater Triumph Missionary Baptist Church with Dr. H.G. McGhee Sr. officiating. Burial will be in church cemetery.

Thelma Millner
MARTINSVILLE, Va. - Thelma Wilson Millner, 57, of 2105 Carver Road, died Friday, Jan. 7, 2000, at Memorial Hospital.
Born Nov. 4, 1942, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Jimmy D. Wilson Sr. and Catherine Inge Wilson Artis.
She married
Larry Millner, who survives.
She lived her life in Martinsville and Henry county. She was a retired employee of E.I.U. Dupont. She was a member of High Ridge Baptist Church, the missionary circle and senior choir. She was also Sunday school teacher, president of the Usher Board, and chairperson of Pastor’s Aide. She was also a member of Carver Hospitality Club.
In addition to her husband of the residence, survivors include one daughter, Tiffany R. Millner of the residence; three brothers, Jimmie D. Wilson of Norfolk, Donnell R. Wilson of Danville and Earnest L. Wilson of Martinsville; and one grandson.
A funeral will be 1 p.m. Tuesday at High Ridge Baptist Church with the Rev. Ray T. Arrington officiating. Burial will be in Carver Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends 7-8 p.m. Monday at Hairston Funeral Home Chapel and at other times at the residence.
Vergie Mize
DANVILLE, Va. - Vergie Thompson Mize, age 82, of 4569 Mount Cross Road, Lot 1, died Friday afternoon, Jan. 7, 2000, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Mrs. Mize was born in Pittsylvania County on August 5, 1917, a daughter of the late Moses Thompson and Mary Inman Thompson.
She was married
to Walter J. Mize who died in 1982.
Mrs. Mize had made her home in the Mount Cross Road community since 1982, after spending most of her life in the Vance community of Pittsylvania County, where she was a homemaker. She was a member of Sharon Baptist Church and the W.M.U. of the church, and also a member of the Mount Cross Community Club.
She was predeceased by two brothers, Wallace Thompson and Garnett Thompson.
Survivors include one son and daughter in law: Jack L. and Jackie Mize of Sharon Lane, and one daughter and son in law: Shirley M. and Joe Blair of Wilmington, North Carolina, and six Sisters: Geneva T. Fowler, Mary T. Nance, Doris T. Bailey, Jean T. Cook and Clara T. Swift, all of Danville, and Sarah T. Horsley of the Mount Hermon community, and two Grandchildren: David P. Blair and Greg S. Blair and her special girls, Terrie and Sarah Haydu, and one special granddaughter: Hayley M. Watlington.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Monday at Sharon Baptist Church by the Rev. Allen Holder and Rev. Billy Robertson. Interment
will follow at Danville Memorial Gardens.
The family received friends at Swicegood Funeral Home on Sunday evening from 7:00 - 8:30 p.m., and will receive friends at other times at the residence of her son, Jack L. Mize, at 160 Sharon Lane in the Sharon community.

Naomi Roane
DANVILLE, Va. - Naomi Love Roane, 81, of 854 Melrose Ave., died Saturday, Jan. 8, 2000, at her residence.
Born Jan. 5, 1919, in Johnston County, N.C., she was the daughter of William Amos Love and Nancy Caroline Wiggins Love.
She married
Henry Garland Roane, June 11, 1938, who predeceased Dec. 15, 1994.
She graduated from Phillips Business College in Raleigh, N.C., and resided in Danville since 1937. She was employed in the Administrative Office of Danville Public Schools, retiring in 1985. She was a member of Moffett Memorial Baptist Church where she was a deaconess and director of the Sunday school department.
Survivors include one daughter, Nancy Roane Overcash of Wickenburg, Ariz.; two sons, Paul Michael Roane of Richmond, and Joseph Franklin Roane of Roanoke; one brother, William V. Love of Jacksonville, Fla.; six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
A funeral will be Noon Monday at Moffett Memorial Baptist Church with the Rev. Lee Ellison and the Rev. Steve Carlton officiating. Burial will be in Green Hill cemetery. The family received friends 7-8:30 p.m. Sunday at Townes Funeral Home Chapel and will receive friends at other times at the residence.
Faye Austin
DRY FORK, Va. - Faye Jones Austin, 69, of 965 Tunstall High Road, died Sunday, Jan. 9, 2000, at Duke University Medical Center after a four-day stay and three years of declining health.
Born Aug. 9, 1930, in Reidsville, N.C., she was the daughter of Richard Jones and Myrtle Freeman Jones.
She married
James Edwin Austin, Dec. 1, 1951, who survives.
She made her home in the Dry Fork community for the past 27 years. She was a homemaker and attended Bethel Baptist Church on Mount Cross Road.
In addition to her husband, survivors include two daughters, Cathy Austin Gibson and Lisa Austin Moore, both of Danville; three sisters, Elaine Marshall of Mount Airy, N.C., Gaye Hawks of Dry Fork and Jane Pack of Greensboro, N.C.; and two grandchildren.
A funeral will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Gilbert Hawks and the Rev. Charlie Cundiff officiating. Burial will be in Danville Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home and at other times at the residence of her daughter, Cathy Gibson, 8329 Mount Cross Road.
Minnie Chattin
SOUTH BOSTON, Va. - Minnie Wells Chattin, 94, formerly of 12 Old Halifax Road, died Monday, Jan. 10, 2000, at Twin Oaks Convalescent Home.
Born Nov. 2, 1905, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Lewis W. Wells and Martha Ann Shelton Wells.
She was married
Sept. 5, 1923, to William David Chattin, who predeceased her in 1992.
She worked at Dan River Inc. for 29 years as a weaver until her retirement. She was a member of Central Boulevard Church of God.
Survivors include one daughter, Mary Helen Cox of Danville; one half-brother, Joe Chattin of California; one half-sister, Essey Towler of Dry Fork; four grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by one son, Rudolph “Buck” Chattin; one daughter, Tilley Scearce; one sister, Hontas Dallas; and three half-sisters, Bessie Hargrave, Lettie Ann Talley and Lessie Chattin.
A funeral will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Barker Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. John Meadows and the Rev. Fletcher Hardy officiating. Interment
will be in Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends 7:30-8:30 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
