Peggy Dalton
DANVILLE, Va. - Peggy Mangrum Dalton, 68, of 9668 Martinsville Highway, died Monday, Jan. 10, 2000, at her residence after 10 months of declining health.
Born Sept. 6, 1931, in the Brosville community, she was the daughter of George Earnest Mangrum and Sallie May Gregory Mangrum.
She married
Daniel Paul Dalton July 11, 1952, who survives.
She made her home in the Brosville community for the past 30 years. She worked with Healthtex Inc. for 19 years. She was a member of Abundant Life World Outreach Church on Mount Cross Road.
In addition to her husband of the residence, survivors include one daughter, Wendy Mangrum Ball of Danville; one sister, Mildred Mangrum Pritchett of Dry Fork; one brother, Glen Mangrum of Newport News; and one grandchild.
A funeral will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. David Ball, the Rev. Bill Motley and the Rev. Bill Leopold officiating. Burial will be in Danville Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home and at other times at the residence.
Katherine Flynn
DANVILLE, Va. - Katherine Simpson Flynn, 84, formerly of 281 Carolina Ave., died Sunday, Jan. 9, 2000, in the Stratford Health Care Center after several years of declining health.
Born Feb. 11, 1915, in Raeford, N.C., she was a daughter of Alf Haywood Simpson and Ruth Hassell Simpson.
She married
Harry Weisiger Flynn, who predeceased her Sept. 27, 1997.
She was raised in Burlington, N.C., and attended Radford and Elon College. In Burlington, she was a member of the Alamance County Service League, Burlington Junior Woman’s Club and the First Presbyterian Church.
She moved to Danville in 1950, and served as a volunteer for the Danville Regional Medical Center, a docent of the Danville Museum of Fine Arts and History, and a member of the Wednesday Club. She was also a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Danville, where she was Sunday School teacher, an honorary life member of the Women of the Church.
Survivors include one daughter, Helen Flynn Walton of Burlington, N.C.; one son Dr. Harry Weisiger Flynn Jr. of Miami; five grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
A funeral will be Noon Friday at First Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Jack Heinsohn, Jr. officiating. Burial will be 3 p.m. at Pine Hill cemetery in Burlington, N.C.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Thursday at Townes Funeral Home.
Barbara Guerry
WEST COLUMBIA, S.C. - Barbara Lee Herndon Guerry, 63, died Monday, Jan. 10, 2000.
Born in Pittsylvania County, Va., she was the daughter of Leonard Hilton and Lucy Washington Martin Herndon.
She married
Rev. Melton Guerry, who survives.
She retired from the South Carolina Highway Department and was a member of Three Fountains Pentecostal Holiness Church and TOPS.
In addition to her husband, survivors include one son, Tim Melton Guerry of Columbia; four brothers, Eugene Herndon of Dry Folk, Va., Malcolm Herndon of Franklin Springs, Ga., Carroll Herndon of Danville and Len Herndon of Dry Folk, Va; one sister, Blanche Holley of Dry Folk, Va., and Rebecca Mumpower of Calhoun, Ga.
A funeral will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Three Fountains Pentecostal Holiness Church, 2606 Emanuel Church Road, West Columbia, S.C. 29170 with the Rev. Bob Causey, the Rev. Derrick Garner and the Rev. Malcolm Herndon officiating. Burial will be in Crescent Hill Memorial Gardens.

Jacques Merchant
DANVILLE, Va. - Jacques Merchant, died Monday, Jan. 10, 2000, in Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born July 11, 1928, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of George T. Merchant and Georgianna Odell Merchant.
He married
Gail Dix Merchant, who survives.
He was a veteran of the United States Army from 1946-1949, having served during World War II and later served in Japan after the war. He was founder and owner of Jacques Jewelry and a member of Providence Baptist Church.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include one son, Kurt Merchant of Martinsville; three sisters, Mary Carter and Jackie Davis, both of Danville and Esther Phipps of Shelby, N.C.; one brother, Garland Merchant of Charlotte, N.C.; and two grandchildren.
A funeral will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Providence Baptist Church with the Rev. Kenneth Clark officiating. Burial will be in church cemetery.

Flossie Martin
DANVILLE, Va. - Flossie Barbour Martin, 96, of 319 1/2 Plum St., died Monday, Jan. 10, 2000, at Danville Regional Medical Center after two months of declining health.
Born Oct. 10, 1903, in Danville, she was the daughter of Lee Barbour and Melissa Yarbrough Barbour.
She married
Baxter K. Martin, who predecesed her.
She lived in the Smith Mountain Lake area and Topeka, Kan., before returning to the Danville area. She worked for Masloff Taylor Shop until 1956. She was also employed with Johnson Department Store, and Saters and Son prior to her retirement in 1976. In 1978, she was employed part time as a seamstress at Belk Leggetts before retiring again at the age of 94. She was of the Presbyterian faith and was the last surviving family member of her generation.
Survivors include four grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by one daughter, Echoe Martin; one son, Otis Lee Martin; three brothers, Ocelle Barbour, Weston Barbour, Floyd Barbour; and two sisters, Bernice Shelton and Hazel Woody.
A graveside service will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Highland Burial Park with the Rev. Lee Ellision and the Rev. Steve Carlton officiating.
The family will receive friends at the residence.

Carroll Moore
HALIFAX, Va. - Carroll Wallace Moore, 57, of 3124 Chatham Road, died Thursday, Dec. 16, 1999, in Auckland, New Zealand.
Born Sept. 26, 1942, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of the late Willis Randolph Moore and Velora Redd Moore, who survives.
He was a member of Pleasant Grove United Church of Christ and served in the United States Air Force.
In addition to his mother of Halifax, survivors include two sons, Willis C. Moore of San Francisco, and Gary W. Moore of Raleigh, N.C.; maternal grandmother, Minnie Redd of Halifax; one brother, Jerry R. Moore of Halifax; one sister, Cathy M. Cosby of Vernon Hill; and two grandchildren.
A memorial service will be 11 a.m. Friday at Powell Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Luther Ramsey officiating. Burial will be in Halifax Memorial Gardens.
Herbert “Hup” Sater
DANVILLE, Va. - Herbert Warren “Hup” Sater, 88, of 1111 Main St., Stratford House, died Saturday, Jan. 8, 2000, at the Stratford Health Care Center.
Born July 3, 1911, in Decatur, Ga., he was the son of Hyman Sater and Fannye Jaffe Sater.
He was married
Dec. 25, 1941, to Barbara Hall Sater, who predeceased him March 6, 1999.
He and his twin brother, Bill, founded Sater’s Men Shop in 1931, and he operated the clothing store until his retirement in 1981.
He was a member of the Temple Beth Sholem, the Danville Golf Club, the German Club and was a charter member of the Danville Exchange Club.
Survivors include two brothers, Jack S. Sater of Danville and Stanley L. Sater of Martinsville.
In addition to his wife, he was predeceased by two brothers, Julian Sater and Bill Sater; and two sisters, Gertrude Kushner and Dorothy Simon.
A graveside service will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at Greenhill cemetery with the Rabbi Michael Pont officiating.
The family will receive friends at the residence of his brother, Jack Sater, 450 Brightwell Drive.

Lewis Turner Sr.
MARTINSVILLE, Va. - Lewis Woodrow Turner Sr., 83, died Sunday, Jan. 9, 2000, at the Beverly Health Care Center in Martinsville.
Born May 28, 1916, in Patrick County, he was the son of William Emmett Turner and Ada Jamerson Turner.
He was retired from Danville Distributing Company where he was a salesman and member of Broad Street Christian Church.
Survivors include two sons, L. Woodrow (Woody) Turner Jr. of Ridgeway and William (Bill) Turner of Huntersville, N.C.; two sisters, Earle T. Hall of Lynchburg and Cristobel T. Via of Martinsville; and five grandchildren.
He was predeceased by one sister, Effie Turner; and one brother, Joseph (Joe) Turner.
A funeral will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at McKee-Stone Funeral Services Chapel. Interment
will be in Roselawn Burial Park.

Rev. Donald Wright
CHATHAM, Va. - The Reverend Donald Louis Wright, age 77, of 714 South Main Street, Chatham, Va., died Sunday morning, January 9, 2000, in the Danville Regional Medical Center.
He was born on February 22, 1922, in Hamilton, Ohio, a son of Marion Wright and Edna Ross Wright.
He was married
to Mary (Nina) Briscoe Wright, who survives of the home.
He attended the public schools of Hamilton, Ohio, the Episcopal Church Army Training Center, the University of Cincinnati and the Virginia Seminary.
Reverend Wright served in the United States Air Corp. as a Second Lieutenant and as a bombardier and navigator in North Africa and Italy during World War II.
He served as Rural Dean for the dioceses of Southern Virginia, former director of Dabney House Conference Center and served at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church at Peytonsburg for 25 years. He also served churches in the counties of Mecklenberg, Nottoway, Halifax and Pittsylvania.
He had served on the boards of the American Red Cross and the Pittsylvania County Community Action.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by three sons and daughters-in-law, Michael and Joy Wright of Tampa, Fla., Richard and Sunshine Wright of Peoria, Ariz., Daniel and Petra Wright of Wuersburg, Germany; two daughters and sons-in-law, Ruth and Ralph Huff of Hilton Head, S.C. and Karen and Jim Peery of Fredericksburg, Va.; and six grandchildren.
Memorial services will be held Saturday, January 15, 2000 at 3:30 p.m. at the Episcopal Church of the Epiphany by the Rev. James Mathieson and Bishop Frank Vest.
The family will receive friends Friday, January 14, 2000, at Townes Funeral Home from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. and at other times will be at the residence, 714 South Main Street, Chatham, Va.

PLANO, Texas - Martha Matilda Edmonds, 79, of Plano, died on Saturday, Jan. 8, 2000.
He was born Aug. 23, 1920, in Pittsylvania Co.
Survivors include four daughters, Sue Satisfield of Plano, Edna Brathwaite of Temple Hills, Md., Willie Lewis of Greenbelt, Md., and Sara Perry of Ft. Washington, Md.; three sons, John Jones, of Richmond, Va., Tracy Adams of Oxon Hills, Md., and James Adams, of Silver Springs, Md.; one sister, Louberta Doson of Chester, Pa.; one brother, Ocie Davis of Oxon Hills, Md.; 16 grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.
A funeral will be 2:30 p.m. Thursday at White Rock Baptist Church with the Rev. Walter Tinsley officiating. Interment
will follow in Highland Burial Park.
