Virginia, U.S., Marriage Records, 1936-2014

Lillian Hughes

VERNON HILL, Va. - Lillian Waller Hughes, 66, of 3201 Ridgeway Rd., died on Monday, Jan. 10, 2000, at her home.
Born Jan. 6, 1934, in Halifax Co., she was the daughter of Thomas Waller and Gay Waller.
She was married to John Fulton Hughes, who survives. She was a member of County Line Baptist Church.
In addition to her husband, survivors include two daughters, Linda Hughes and Debra Hess, both of Vernon Hill; one brother, Perry Waller of South Boston; five grandchildren, four great grandchildren, and two step great grandchildren.
She was predeceased by one brother, Pollard Waller.
A funeral will be 2 p.m. Thursday at County Line Baptist Church, with the Rev. Joseph Cantrell officiating. Interment icon will follow in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends on Wednesday, from 7-8:30 p.m. at Powell Funeral Home, and other times at the residence.
Powell Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

John Jackson

HALIFAX, Va. - John Henry Jackson, 61, of 1026 Sinai Rd., died on Monday, Jan. 10, 2000, at Halifax Regional Hospital.
Born Sept. 19, 1938, in Halifax Co., he was the son of Alexander T. Jackson, who predeceased him, and Frances B. Smith.
He married Doris Layton Jackson, who survives. He was a retired truck driver for A.E. Morris Trucking Co., and was a member of Mt. Cana United Methodist Church.
In addition to his wife of Halifax, and his mother, of Julian, N.C., survivors include two daughters, Jennifer Cash of Halifax, and Christy Lloyd, of South Boston; three sons, Thomas Jackson, of Staunton, Jason Jackson, of Halifax, and Darrell Layton of Crystal Hill; two sisters, Ann Jackson, of Sophie, N.C., and Viola Alley, of Madison, N.C.; four brothers, Billy Jackson, of Liberty, N.C., Terry Jackson, and Jerry Jackson, both of Greensboro, N.C., and James Jackson of Danville; one half brother, James Smith, and one half sister, Margaret Potts, both of Julian, N.C..
A graveside funeral will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Grace Baptist Church cemetery in Virgilina, with the Rev. Richard Welch officiating.
The family will receive friends on Wednesday, from 7-8:30 p.m., at Brooks Funeral Home, and other times at the residence.
Brooks Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Annie Long

BRONX, N.Y. - Annie Long, 76, of Pelham Parkway Nursing Home, died on Friday, Jan. 7, 2000, at the nursing home.
Born April 20, 1923, in Caswell Co., she was the daughter of Jack Farmer and Mammie Farmer.
She married John Long, who predeceased her. She was a native of Caswell Co., and attended Caswell Co. Public Schools.
Survivors include one daughter, Janie Stewart of Manhattan; one son, Henry Long, of Bronx; one sister, Katie Henderson of Danville, Va.; eight grandchildren, and 12 great-grandchildren.
A funeral will be 1 p.m. Thursday at Macedonia A.M.E. Church with the Rev. Clyde Long officiating. Interment icon will follow in the church cemetery.
There will be a wake Wednesday evening at Plenty Funeral Home Chapel, Semora, N.C., from 7-8p.m..
Plenty Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Oscar Allen Payne

DANVILLE, Va. - Oscar Allen Payne, 71, of 304 Country Lane, died on Tuesday, Nov. 11, 2000, in Danville Regional Medical Center after a year and a half of declining health.
Born Jan. 15, 1928, in Pittsylvania Co., he was the son of Rorer Allen Payne and Minnie Eanes Payne.
He married Mary Herndon Payne, who survives, on May 8, 1959. Mr. Payne lived his life in the Danville and Pittsylvania County areas where after 10 years of service retired as a branch manager with First Virginia Bank South. Mr. Payne was a member of Elks Lodge B.P.O.E. #227, American Legion Post 325, Improved Order Of Redmen Poquoson Tribe #124, Sertoma, The Gideons and The Pittsylvania County Service Authority. Mr. Payne was of the Christian faith, and served in the Merchant Marines.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include a son and daughter in law, Thomas L. Payne and Sherrice F. Payne, of Dry Fork; one grandson, Robert A. Payne, of the residence; one step grandson, Raymond Buckner, of Dry Fork; one brother, Carroll L. Payne, of Miami, Fla., and two sisters, Sadie Carter, of Greensboro, N.C., and Hazel Frith, of Ridgeway.
He was predeceased by one son, Rorer Allen Payne.
A graveside funeral will be 2:00 p.m. Thursday, in Highland Burial Park, with the Revs. Allen Holder, Hershel Stone, and Freddy Vicks officiating. American Legion Post 1097 will perform military rites. Elks Lodge will also be present.
The family will receive friends on Wednesday, from 7:30-8:30 p.m., at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel, and other times at the residence.
Wrenn-Yeatts Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Rosa Stone

CHATHAM, Va. - Rosa Erwin Stone, 75, of 101 Robins Court, died on Thursday, Jan. 6, 2000, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born April 4, 1924, in Pittsylvania Co., she was the daughter of Albert Ervin and Naomi Ervin.
She was married to Amos Stone, who predeceased her. She was a member of Little Mt. Zion Pentecostal Holiness Church, and was a homemaker.
She is survived by 10 daughters, Shirley Watson of Danburt, Conn., Rosa Stone, Mary Stone, Betty Hodnett, and Henrietta Stone, all of Chatham, Isabell Carter and Mable Reynolds, both of Danville, Linda Jennings of North Carolina, Virginia Calloway of Gretna, Marilyn Stone of Dry Fork; seven sons, Thomas Stone of Blairs, Amos Stone, Jr. of Renan, Willie Stone of Callands, Gilmore Stone and Nile Stone of Danville, Albert Stone of Maine, Joe Stone of Chatham; one sister, Mercy Stone of Philadelphia; 19 grandchildren, and 50 great grandchildren.
A funeral will be 2 p.m. Thursday, from Little Mt. Zion Pentecostal with the Elder Mandora Hayes officiating. Interment icon will follow in New Jerusalem Church cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the residence.

Bernice Tate

DANVILLE, Va. - Bernice Mills Tate, 77, of 1761 Mount Cross Road, died Monday, Jan. 10, 2000, at the Blue Ridge Nursing Center, Martinsville.
Born Dec. 22, 1922, in Danville, she was the daughter of George Washington Mills and Ella Warren Mills.
She married George Linwood Tate, who survives.
She spent most of her life in the Old Mount Cross Road community. She worked for 37 years at Dan River Inc. before retiring in August, 1977. She was a member of The Tabernacle and was treasurer of the church for many years.
In addition to her husband of the residence, survivors include one daughter, Vickie Lynn Turner of Ringgold; one sister, Mary J. Witcher of Goose Creek, S.C.; one grandchild and two step-grandchildren.
A funeral will be 4 p.m. Thursday at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. R.J. Barber Jr. officiating. Burial will be in Danville Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home and at other times at the residence of her daughter, Vickie Turner, 1169 Kentuck Church Road, Ringgold.

Rowena Alderson

DANVILLE, Va. - Rowena Florence Neaves Alderson, 80, of 62 Hylton Ave., died Wednesday, Jan. 12, 2000, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Aug. 20, 1919, in Washington County, she was the son of William Henry Neaves and Lottie Moody Neaves.
She was married to Archie D. Alderson, who predeceased her. She worked at Callahan Cleaners as a seamstress until retirement. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Damascus.
Survivors include four sons, James R. Alderson of Gwynn, Mich., Archie D. Alderson Jr. of Danville, Douglas T. Alderson of Penhook and Randy D. Alderson of Gretna; two daughters, Pat S. Chaney of Providence, N.C., and Betty Hayes of Danville; two sisters, Lavenia “Curly” Poff of Damascus and Peggy Rust of Penhook; 18 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren.
A graveside funeral will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Danville Memorial Gardens, with the Rev. Wayne Wallace officiating.
The family will receive friends Friday from 7-9 p.m. at Barker Funeral Home, and other times at the residence.

Alvin Kenneth Anderson

UNION HALL, Va. - Alvin Kenneth “Andy” Anderson, of Union Hall, died at home January 11, 2000, after a short illness.
He was born in Pittsburgh, Pen., on June 17, 1924, the son of Herbert D. and Etta E. Anderson.
Surviving are his loving wife of 57 years, Lillian Anderson; five children, Elizabeth Ann Stewart of Houston, TX, James J. Anderson of Richmond, KY, Nancy Jean Saunders of Midlothian, Shirley Alice Bartholomew Rutherford of Midlothian and Gunnery Sergeant William W. Anderson, USMC; and ten grandsons and two granddaughters.
Andy was a graduate of Auburn University in 1950 and practiced as a Certified Public Accountant for 40 years. He is retired from McGladry and Pullen and Harris, Harvey, Neal and Company. He is an honorary Life Member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants and belonged to various state organizations during his practice. He served in World War II throughout the war as a Radioman on the USS Augusta and the USS Quincy. He was elected to Danville City Council for four terms and resigned in the midst of his fourth term as he moved from Danville.
The family will receive friends from 3:00 to 5:00 P.M. Saturday, January 15, 2000. Military graveside services were private. Arrangements by Flora Funeral Service, S. Main St., Rocky Mount. He was a non-denominational Christian and is now with his God.

James Bennett

DANVILLE, Va. - James Cooper Bennett, 90, of 150 Tate St. died Friday, Jan. 7, 2000, at the residence.
Born Nov. 19, 1909, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of Sip Bennett and Sallie Younger.
He married Harriett B. Bennett, who survives. He was a self-employed tobacco farmer, and was a member of Oak Grove Baptist Church, where he was a member of the church choir.
In addition to his wife, survivors include two sons, Ryland Bennett of Danville and Albert Bennett of Washington; eight daughters, Amanda Allen, Vernell Inge, Bernice Bennett, Gladys Roberts, all of Washington, Pauline Britten of Dry Fork, Eunice Simmons, Marie Washington, and Ruth Bennett, all of Danville; 24 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren, and one great great-grandchild.
A funeral will be 2 p.m. Friday at Oak Grove Baptist Church with the Rev. Ralph Cypress officiating. Interment icon will follow in Highland Burial Park.
Viewing will be Thursday from 4-8 p.m. at Cunningham & Hughes Funeral Home.
The family will be in the home.

Evelyn Clay

OAK HILL, W.Va. - Evelyn Dean Clay, 69, of Hidden Valley Nursing Home, died Tuesday, Jan. 11, 2000, at the University of Virginia Hospital, after a short illness.
Born Oct. 5, 1930, in Chatham, Va., she was the daughter of Murray Scott and Annie Moser.
She married Mathew D. Clay, who predeceased her. She was also predeceased by one sister, Kittie A. Spence.
In addition to her mother, survivors include one daughter, Janet Harper, of Oak Hill; five brothers, Wayne Moser, James Moser, and Lawrence Moser, all of Danville, Va.; Albert Moser and Clarence Moser, both of Chatham; and two sisters, Helen Cambell of Chatham and Bernice Updike of Danville.
A funeral will be Friday at Highlawn Funeral Home with the Rev. Albert Moser officiating.

Madeline Derreberry

DANVILLE, Va. - Madeline Hopkins Derreberry, 87, of Riverside Health Care Center, died Tuesday, Jan. 11, 2000, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born June 29, 1912, in Henry, she was the daughter of Thomas David Hopkins and Nannie Stone Hopkins.
She was married to Fred Derreberry, who predeceased her Feb. 19, 1991.
She was a resident of Danville since 1924, was a graduate of Schoolfield High School and worked for Dan River Inc. for 42 years. She was with Industrial Engineering for 29 years prior to her retirement.
She also was a member of State Rebekah Lodge and the Dan River Retired Workers Club. Survivors include two sisters, Lottie H. Setliff and Ollie H. Richardson, both of Danville.
A funeral will be 11 a.m. Friday at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. David R. Turbyfill officiating. Interment icon will follow at Schoolfield cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 7-8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home, and other times at the residence of Mr. and Mrs. Bobby Johnson, 2720 Old Mayfield Rd.
