‘Joey’ Grogan
DANVILLE, Va. - Joseph Aaron “Joey” Grogan, 16, of 109 Walnut Road died Tuesday, Jan. 11, 2000, at the residence.
Born July 8, 1983, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of Jan. B. Grogan and Barbara Miner Grogan.
He was a member of Fairview United Methodist Church, and was an employee at Commonwealth Pharmacy. He was actively involved in Southside Chrysalis, and was a junior at Tunstall High School.
Survivors, in addition to his parents, include a grandfather, Ralph Grogan of Eden, N.C.; a grandmother, Mary Frances Wade, of Fernandina Beach, Fla., and one brother, Jarrod B. Grogan, of the residence.
A funeral will be held 10 a.m. Friday at Fairview United Methodist Church with the Rev. O.H. Burton officiating.
Interment will follow in the Oakland United Methodist Church cemetery in Dry Fork.
The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 Thursday at Fairview United Methodist Church, and other times at the residence.

Flossie Martin
DANVILLE, Va. - Flossie Barber Martin, 96, of 319 1/2 Plum St., died Monday, Jan. 10, 2000, at Danville Regional Medical Center after two months of declining health.
Born Oct. 10, 1903, in Danville, she was the daughter of Lee Barber and Melissa Yarbrough Barber.
She married
Baxter K. Martin, who predecesed her.
She lived in the Smith Mountain Lake area and Topeka, Kan., before returning to the Danville area. She worked for Masloff Taylor Shop until 1956. She was also employed with Johnson Department Store, and Saters and Son prior to her retirement in 1976. In 1978, she was employed part time as a seamstress at Belk Leggetts before retiring again at the age of 94. She was of the Presbyterian faith and was the last surviving family member of her generation. Survivors include four grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by one daughter, Echoe Martin; one son, Otis Lee Martin; three brothers, Ocelle Barber, Weston Barber, Floyd Barber; and two sisters, Bernice Shelton and Hazel Woody.
A graveside service will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Highland Burial Park with the Rev. Lee Ellision and the Rev. Steve Carlton officiating.
The family will receive friends at the residence.

Barbara Scruggs
DANVILLE, Va. - Barbara Ann Scruggs, 54, of 621 Main St., Apt. 220, died Monday, Jan. 10, 2000, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born April 6, 1945, in Danville, he was the son of James Scruggs and Daisy Lovelace Scruggs.
She was of the Baptist faith. Until her retirement, she worked as a weaver for Dan River Inc.
She was predeceased by two brothers, Jimmy Scruggs and Jerry Scruggs.
In addition to her parents, survivors include two sons, Charles Easome and Jerry Easome, both of Danville; one daughter, Lisa E. Murphy of Ringgold; one brother, Everett Scruggs of Danville; and one grandson.
A graveside funeral will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Highland Burial Park with the Rev. Walter Yancey officiating.
The family will receive friends Wednesday from 7-8:30 p.m. at Barker Funeral Home.
Florence Barber
DANVILLE, Va. - Florence Hilda Marlow Barber, 80, of 121 Wilderness Lane, died Thursday, Jan. 13, 2000, at Danville Regional Medical Center for one day.
Born March 4, 1919, in Henry County, she was the daughter of Matthew Marlow and Gracie Hankins Marlow.
She married
Ernest E. Barber, who predeceased Jan. 20, 1969.
She was a member of Lakewood Evangelical Methodist Church. She lived most of her life in Ringgold and Danville where she was a homemaker.
Survivors include two daughters Betty B. Martin and Carnelia B. Easley, both of Danville; two sons Cecil Edward Barber of Columbia S.C. and Ernest Wayne Barber of Front Royal, Va.; one brother Glen Marlow of Danville; two sisters Helen M. Finley of Smithfield and Dorothy M. Throckmorton of Dillwyn; and one granddaughter, Sandra M. Lewis of Covington, Va.

Hubert “Catfish” Bates
BLAIRS, Va.- Hubert Junior “Catfish” Bates, 66, of Giles Trailer Haven, Lot 5, died Thursday, Jan. 13, 2000, at his residence after two years of declining health.
Born March 30, 1933, in Chatham, Va., he was the son of Cubie Bates and Linnie Adkins Bates.
He married
Nancy Hazel Parker Bates, who survives.
He was a member of the United States Army having served during the Korean Conflict. He was employed by Crider Tire Services for 35 years prior to his retirement.
In addition to his wife, survivors include one daughter Barbara Mays of Dry Fork; three sons Larry Bates of Martinsville, Kenneth Bates of Ridgeway, and Michael Bates of Dry Fork; two sisters Nannie Martin of Martinsville and Doris Roach of Madison Heights, Va.; eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
A graveside service will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Hillcrest Burial Park with military rites conducted by American Legion Post No. 1097.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Friday at Scott Funeral Home and at other times at the residence of his daughter, Barbara Mays, 1101 Hopewell Road, Dry Fork.

Violet L. Hilliard
LAKE WORTH, Fla. - Violet L. Hilliard, 81, of Lake Worth, Florida, died Sunday, January 9, 2000 at Wellington Regional Medical Center. Mrs. Hilliard was born on August 18, 1918 in Orrville, Ohio the daughter of Harvey King and Lena Misere King. She was married
to Jesse H. Hilliard who predeceased her. Mrs. Hilliard was a member of Lake Worth Missionary Alliance Church where she served as the pianist. When she lived in Danville she served as pianist at Lakewood Evangelical Church where her husband had directed the music.
She is survived by five daughters: Ruby M. McLelland (James) of Boynton Beach, FL; Peggy Keeling (Albert) of Keysville, VA; Jean Arendall (James) of Stuarts Draft, VA; and Joy H. Millner of West Palm Beach, FL; Joanne Turnquist (Gordon) of West Palm Beach, Fl.;three sons, Rudolph Hilliard-predeceased (Dot) of Durham, NC; Gary Hilliard (Janet) of Plainsfield, NJ; Hiram Hilliard (Beverly) of Oxford, N.C.; one sister, Rosemarie Davidson of Lake Worth, FL; twenty-three grandchildren and thirteen great-grandchildren.
A funeral service will be held on Friday, January 14, 2000, 2:00 P.M. at Lakewood Evangelical Methodist Church. Rev. David Wilson will be conducting the services. Interment
will follow at Highland Burial Park.
The family received friends on Thursday, January 13, 2000 from 7:00 to 9:00 at Townes Funeral Home. At other times the family will receive friends at the residence of Dale and Janet Hilliard, 156 Clarendon Circle, Danville.
James Hinton Sr.
DANVILE, Va. - James Thomas Hinton Sr., 73, of 143 Longview Ave. died Tuesday, Jan. 11, 2000, at Danville Regional Medical Center, after a five-day stay.
Born April 12, 1926, in Danville, he was the son of Charlie James Hinton and Sadie Rutledge Hinton.
He married
Dora Reynolds Hinton, who survives.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy. He spent most of his life in Danville, where he worked for Dan River Inc. for 30 years. He was of the Baptist faith and was a well known-musician.
In addition to his wife, survivors include one daughter, Nancye Hinton Davis of Brosville; three sons, Charles R. Hinton of Pelham, N.C., Jerry W. Hinton of Brosville, and James T. Hinton Jr. of Whitmell; two sisters, Hazel Hinton Carter of Brosville and Charlotte H. Mansfield of Danville; one brother, William E. Hinton of Keeling; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
A funeral will be held 2 p.m. Saturday at Swicegood Funeral Home with the Rev. Matthew Pacifico officiating. Interment
will follow at Schoolfield cemetery.

Mary Holt
DANVILLE, Va. - Mary Sage Holt, 94, formerly of Danville, died Sunday, Jan. 9, 2000, at the Rebsamen Medical Center in Jacksonville, Ark.
Born June 9, 1905, in Wythe County, she was the daughter of Van Buren Sage and Emma Neal Sage.
She was married
to Irvin T. Holt Sr., who predeceased her on April 29, 1986. She spent most of her life in Danville before moving to Arkansas to live with her daughter. She attended Schoolfield Baptist Church and retired in 1967 from Dan River Inc.
Survivors include one daughter, Regina Holt Roach of Cabot, Ark.; one son, William G. Holt of Woodbridge; five grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by two sons, Irvin T. Holt Jr. and Aubrey Jack Holt; two brothers, Brown Sage and Kerman Sage, and one sister, Ella Sage.
A funeral will be held 2 p.m. Friday at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. David R. Turbyfill officiating. Interment
will follow at Danville Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home Friday, one hour prior to the service.
Eunice Abernathy Kirby
REIDSVILLE, N.C.- Eunice Abernathy Kirby, of 610 Fontaine Street, Reidsville, died Tuesday morning, January 11, 2000, at Crisp Regional Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Cordele, Ga.
Funeral services will be Saturday at 11:00 a.m. at Zion Baptist Church with Dr. J.D. Ballard officiating. Burial will be in the family plot of Eden Gardens cemetery.
Mrs. Kirby was the widow of the late Dr. E. L. Kirby, Sr., former pastor of both Zion Baptist Church in Reidsville and Red Hill Baptist Church, Pelham.
Mrs. Kirby was a native of Catawba, North Carolina and a member of Zion Baptist Church. She was an organizer of the Willing Workers of First Baptist Church of Thomasville. Mrs. Kirby was a member of Ministerial Wives Fellowship, active member of the Women’s Auxiliary of Rowan Baptist Association, board member of the Women’s Auxiliary of the General State Convention of North Carolina. She was also Choir directress for Zion Baptist Church and Red Hill Baptist Church.
Survivors include her devoted son, Elvie Lee Kirby, Jr. and his spouse, Barbara, both of Albany, Georgia; two grandsons, Raphael Artez Kirby of Albany, Georgia and Durante Pierre Kirby of Atlanta, Georgia; great-grandson, Raphael Artez Kirby Jr. of Albany, Ga.; one sister, Cordelia Gaines of High Point; and other relatives and many treasured friends.
Visitation will be conducted Friday evening from 7 until 7:30 p.m. at Johnson and Sons Funeral Home.

Maggie McDaniel
CALLANDS, Va. - Maggie Clark McDaniel, 92, of 18985 Franklin Turnpike., died Tuesday, Jan. 11, 2000 at Roman Eagle Memorial Home.
Born April 8, 1907, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of George Madison Clark and Lillie Hayden Clark.
She was a housewife and farmer, and was of the Baptist faith.
In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by a son, Don McDaniel.
Survivors include one son, William Ray McDaniel of Whitmell; one daughter, Annie M. Hammock of Callands; one sister, Elsie Clark McDaniel, of Brosville; nine grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild.
A graveside service will be 11 a.m. Friday in Highland Burial Park, with the Rev. Mike Hearp officiating.
The family received friends Thursday from 7-8:30 p.m. at Barker Funeral Home Chapel, and other times at the residence.
Nathaniel McLaughlin
DANVILLE, Va. - Nathaniel Terry McLaughlin, 40, of Winslow St., died Wednesday, Jan. 12, 2000, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born July 14, 1959, he was the son of Susie McLaughlin, who survives.
In his earlier years, he was a member of the White Stone Pentecostal Holiness Church, Sutherlin, Va. He was employed with Bassett Furniture Company, Martinsville.
Survivors include one sister Mary A. McLaughlin of Danville; three brothers Cecil McLaughlin of Williamsburg, Mudie McLauglhin of Sutherlin, and Frank McLaughlin of Danville.
A graveside service will be 1 p.m. Saturday at White Stone Pentecostal Holiness Church cemetery with Elder Watkins officiating.
The family will receive friends 4-8 p.m. Friday at Beavers Funeral Home Chapel and at other times at the residence of his mother, 207 White St.
