James Jeffries
DANVILLE, Va. - James C. Jeffries, 69, of Grant St., died Thursday, Jan. 15, 2000, at Piney Forest Health Care Center.
Born Feb. 7, 1930, in Danville, he was the son of William Jeffries and Betsy Mitchell Jeffries.
He was a retired tobacco worker and a member of Bibleway Worldwide Church.
Survivors include two sons Garrett Coyner and James Coyner, both of Danville; two sisters Esther Towler and Annie Foster, both of Danville; and five grandchildren.
A viewing will be 1-8 p.m. Wednesday at L.H. Brooks and Brothers Funeral Chapel.
A funeral will be 2 p.m. Thursday at the funeral chapel with the Rev. Jasper Watkins officiating. Burial will be in Oak Hill cemetery. The family will receive friends at 158 North Ave.
Jessie Law
CHATHAM, Va. - Jessie Jewel Yeatts Law, 93, of 3272 Climax Road, died Tuesday, Jan. 18, 2000, at Gretna Health Care Center.
Born April 14, 1906, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Charles David Yeatts and Ada Reynolds Yeatts.
She married
Jesse Lucius Law, who predeceased her.
She was a member of Greenpond Baptist Church.
Survivors include one daughter Barbara Ann L. Lomax of Cowker City, Kan.; two sons Tommy R. Law of Chatham and Edward Lucius Law of Roanoke; one sister Addie Yeatts Towler of Chatham; seven grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
A funeral will be 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 21, 2000, at Greenpond Baptist Church with the Rev. John McCray and the Rev. R.G. Rowland officiating. Burial will be in church cemetery. The family will receive friends at the residence of her son, Tommy R. Law, 3272 Climax Road.

Claudia Cooter
VENICE, Fla. - Claudia Ricker Cooter, 91, died Thursday, Jan. 13, 2000.
Born May 15, 1908, in Madison County, N.C., she was the daughter of Rosen Burnside and Laura Brown Ricker.
She married
Edgar Newton Cooter, who predeceased her.
She was a long-time resident of Danville, Va., before moving to Venice in 1996. She worked at Dan River, Inc., Schoolfield Recreation Department before retiring in 1970. She was a member of West End Christian Church, Disciples of Christ in Danville. She was active in the church, Girl Scouts, Bridge Clubs and Quilting Clubs.
Survivors include two daughters Ramona C. Hodnett of Clemons, N.C. and Evelyn C. Foley of Venice, Fla; one son Guy Ricker Cooter of Danville; six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at West End Christian Church. A private interment will follow.
The family will receive friends 5-6:30 p.m. Sunday at West End Christian Church, 130 Montage St.

Bobby E. Wofford
NEW HAVEN, Mich. - Bobby Eugene Wofford, 68, died Saturday, Jan. 8, 2000, at his residence.
Born July 6, 1931, in Charlotte, N.C., he was the son of Joseph L. Wofford and Ruby B. Wofford.
He married
Nancy King Wofford, who predeceased him. He graduated from Schoolfield High School and Clemson College. He served in the U.S. Army as a helicopter pilot, and received many awards including the Bronze Star. He was a veteran of the Korean War and the Vietnam War. He was commander of the Air Field based at Fort Campbell, Ky. He worked in the Civil Service until his retirement in April 1999.
He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Clarksville, Tenn., where he resided for 34 years.
He moved to Michigan six months ago.
Survivors include two daughters, Mary Lu Browder and Cynthia W. Gray of Clarksville, Tenn.; one sister, Eileen Myers of Ringgold, Va.; 10 grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
In addition to his wife, he was predeceased by one son, William J. Wofford and one daughter, Linda W. Ferrell.
A military funeral was held at the West Tennessee Veterans cemetery in Memphis, Tenn., and a memorial service was held at McReynolds, Nave Funeral Home in Clarksville, Tenn., on Saturday, with the Rev. Roger Freeman officiating.
The family received friends Thursday at Twin Oakes Funeral Home in South Haven, Mich.
Rev. Daniel Adams Sr.
HAMPTON, Va. - Rev. Daniel Lewis Adams Sr., 60, died Friday, Jan. 14, 2000 at his residence of several years of declining health.
Born Oct. 8, 1939, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of Will and Beatrice Motley-Adams.
He married
Evelyn V. Lindsey Adams, who survives.
He grew up in Pittsylvania County and attended public schools. He graduated from Old Dominion University and Boyce Bible College and Seminary. He was a member of NAACP Local and National Chapters, Union Light Lodge #268 P.H.A., and Virginia Ruth Chapter #3 O.E.S. He served as pastor of Mt. Zion Baptist Church for 19 years.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include one son, Daniel L. Adams Jr.; two daughters, Trudy A. Burton and Lisa A. Monden, all of Newport News; two sisters, Lucille Brooks of Baltimore, and Bessie A. Carter of Blairs; five brothers, Fred Motley, Cephus R. Motley Sr., Wilma Motley and Thomas Motley, all of Danville, and John A. Motley of Blairs, and seven grandchildren.
A funeral will be held at 12-noon Saturday at Mt. Zion Baptist Church in Charles City County with Dr. Robert Young and the Rev. James Johnson officiating. Interment
will follow in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends Friday, from 7-9 p.m. at the New West End Baptist Church at 2413 Shell Road in Hampton.
Edna Martin Braniger
DANVILLE, Va. - Edna Martin Braniger, 99, of 3309 Green Hill Drive, Mt. Herman Community, died Thursday, Jan. 20, 2000, at the residence.
Born April 1, 1900, in Monroe County, Ohio, she was the daughter of Walter R. Martin and Melissa Jane Johnston Martin.
She married
John Oakley Braniger, who predeceased her. She moved to Danville in 1969 and was a member of Nor-Dan Church of Christ.
She is survived by one daughter, Janet B. Tamson of Punta Gorda, Fla.; one sister, Effie Martin of Danville, and one brother, Frank Martin of Akron, Ohio.
A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Townes Memorial Chapel with the Rev. John Hill officiating. Interment
will be Monday at Rose Hill Memorial Park in Akron, Ohio.

Dean Alton Chaney
BLAIRS, Va. - Dean Alton Chaney, 50, of 336 Hall Farmer Road died Tuesday, Jan. 18, 2000 at Duke University Medical Center.
Born Aug. 16, 1949, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of the late Samuel Chaney and Adell Anderson Chaney, who survives.
He married
Gladys Stephens Chaney, who survives. He was employed with Dan River, Inc. for many years.
In addition to his wife and mother, survivors include three daughters, Claudette Chaney, Tameka Chaney and LaCheer Chaney, all of Blairs; two sisters, Yvonne Chaney of Reading, Pa. and Doris Chaney of Oxon Hill, Md., and two brothers, Franklin Chaney and Samuel L. Chaney, both of Danville.
A funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Chapel of Fisher and Watkins Funeral Home with the Rev. Edward Pope officiating. Interment
will follow in Highland Burial Park.

James Woltz Garland
DETROIT - James Woltz Garland, 56, died Monday, Jan. 3, 2000 at the Regional Medical Center in Bayonet Point, Fla.
Born Nov. 12, 1943, in Danville, Va., he was a son of James and Corrine Garland.
He graduated from Langston High School and attended North Carolina A&T University and the Detroit Institute of Technology. He served in the U.S. Army, 10th Infantry and was a veteran of the Vietnam War. He received several medals including the Purple Heart. He was honorably discharged in Nov. 1967. He worked at Vulcan Steel in Detroit. He was also a member of the Mount Carmel Baptist Church and was an active member of the Danville Chapter of the V.F.W.
Survivors include one son, James W. Garland of Detroit; one daughter, Sharita Garland of Detroit; three sisters, Barbara Garland, Sylvia Barnes, and Mary Williams, and one brother, Dwight Garland.
A memorial service was held Jan. 8 at Grace Bible Church in Florida. Fisher and Watkins Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Panzy Haun
MARTINSVILLE, Va. - Panzy Bryan Haun, 85, of Blue Ridge Nursing Center, and formerly of 110 Piney Forest Road, died Tuesday, Jan. 18, 2000, at the Memorial Hospital of Martinsville & Henry County after 18 months of declining health and a three-week stay in the hospital.
Born June 13, 1914, in Callands, she was the daughter of George C. Bryan and Jamarina Bryan.
She married
George Haun, who predeceased her in 1961. She resided at Blue Ridge Nursing Center for the past 19 months after spending most of her life in Danville. She worked for Dan River Inc. for 45 years before retiring at the age of 62. She was one of Jehovah’s Witnesses associated with the local congregation.
Survivors include one brother, Arthur Bryan of Danville.
A memorial service will be 3 p.m. Saturday at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses, with the Elder John Scearcy III officiating.

Hazel Lee
DANVILLE, Va. - Hazel Strader Lee, 91, of 58 Glen Oak Drive, died Tuesday, Jan. 18, 2000, at Stratford Health Care Center after several years of declining health.
Born July 24, 1908, in Pelham, N.C., she was the daughter of Joel Dolphus Strader and Martha Betty Weatherford Strader.
She married
Andrew Jackson Lee, who predeceased her on Dec. 11, 1968. She spent most of her life in Pelham, N.C., and Danville, where she was a homemaker and member of Holland Road Baptist Church.
Survivors include three sons, Robert Eugene Lee of Danville, and Lewis Dolphus Lee and Andrew Daniel Lee of Pelham, N.C.; three daughters, Betty Louise Poindexter of Pelham, N.C., Alice Marie Watkins of Ringgold,and Dalice Ann Glosson of Reidsville, N.C.; one step sister, Hester Bailey of Pelham, N.C.; 13 grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren, and one great great grandchild.
In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by one brother, Eris Strader, and one sister, Hassie Clara Strader Cook.
A funeral will be 2 p.m. Friday at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Michael Kent officiating. Interment
will follow in the Hickory Grove United Methodist Church cemetery in Rockingham County, N.C.

Ora Grace East Perdue
EDISON, N.J. - Ora Grace East Perdue, 88, formerly of Roanoke, died Saturday, Jan. 15, 2000.
She was born in Chatham, Va.
She married
Kermit P. Perdue. She was a graduate of the Lewis-Gale Nursing School and was a member of the Alumni Association.
In addition to her husband, survivors include one daughter, Nancy Clark of Edison N.J.; two brothers, Sam and Paul East, both of Chatham; one sister, Edna Townsend of Chatham, and one grandson.
A funeral will be 11 a.m. Friday at Oakey’s Roanoke Chapel with the Rev. Philip Alligood officiating. Interment
will follow in Sherwood Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends Friday, one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
