James R. Waddill
WASHINGTON - James R. Waddill died Saturday, Jan. 15, 2000, at his residence.
Born in Ringgold, Va., he was the son of Lucille Thomas Robertson and Elmer Waddill.
He married
Louise Barksdale and later married
Vivian G. Waddill, who survives. He attended East New Hope Elementary School and Danville City Schools. He sang with the Shelly Quartet. He later moved to Washington D.C. where he worked as a cab driver before becoming a U.S. Postal Worker.
In addition to his wife, survivors include four daughters, Lucille of Pennsylvania, Mildred of Alabama, Vera of Japan, and Cathy of Maryland; one stepdaughter, Tharell of Washington D.C.; two sons, James A. Waddill and Edward R. Waddill of Maryland; one sister, Brenda R. Ferguson of Danville, Va.; his stepfather, Sam Robertson of Danville, Va.; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by one daughter, Gwendolyn.
A funeral will be 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Gethsamane Baptist Church located at 4th St. NW, Washington D.C.
The family will receive friends Friday from 6-9 p.m. at Gethsamane Baptist Church, and other times at the home.

Mary Young
ALTAVISTA, Va. - Mary Coffey Young, 76, of 809 Ninth St., died Thursday, Jan. 20, 2000, in Lynchburg General Hospital.
Born Feb. 1, 1923, in Sandy Level, she was the daughter of Harry B. and Ella Clements Coffey.
She married
Willie Audry “Bill” Young, who predeceased her. She was a member of Central Baptist Church, WMU, and the church choir. She was also on the Retired and Senior Volunteer Program Advisory Council, a DAWN volunteer, a member of the Kitchen Band, and a retired employee of Leggett.
Survivors include three daughters, Brenda Taylor of Huddleston, Cecilia Dowdy of Danville, and Susan Colquitt of Anniston, Ala.; one brother, Howard S. Coffey of Gladewater, Texas; one sister, Audrey Anderlie of New Hope, Minn.; five grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren.
A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday in Central Baptist Church with the Rev. William Soyars and Dr. R. James Rogers officiating. Interment
will follow in Altavista Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends at Finch & Finch Funeral home, Altavista, from 7-8:30 p.m. Friday, and other times at the residence.
Cecil G. Bailey Sr.
DANVILLE, Va. - Cecil G. Bailey Sr., 81, of 1716 North Main St., died Friday morning, January 21, 2000 at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born April 2, 1918, in Prince Edward County, he was the son of T.C. and Gladys Bailey.
He married
Marjorie Bingham Bailey, who survives.
He was a veteran of the United States Army, serving in the European Theater of War.
Prior to his retirement, he was a salesman for Johnson Foods.
He was a member of Moseley Memorial United Methodist Church.
Survivors, besides his wife, include two sons, John Bailey and wife, Nina; Cecil (Junior) Bailey and wife, Cindy of Danville. One brother, Clyde Bailey of Danville, three sisters; Dorothy B. Snead of Blairs, Va., Lois B. Pugh and Mary B. Hamlett of Prince Edward County; five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
He was also predeceased by four brothers and two sisters.
A funeral will be held Sunday, January 23, 2000 at 2:00 pm from Townes Memorial chapel with the Rev. George Neas and Pastor Caldwell Day officiating. Interment
will be in Highland Burial Park with military honors conducted by the American Legion Post 325 Honor Guard.
The family will receive friends on Saturday night from 7:00-8:30 p.m. at Townes Funeral Home and at other times will be at the home of John Bailey, 324 Vicar Road (Shadowwood Park).
William Hearp
DANVILLE, Va. - William Guy Hearp, 83, of 239 Fagan St., died Friday, Jan. 21, 2000, at Roman Eagle Memorial Nursing Home.
Born July 9, 1916, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of William Ben Hearp and Laura Davis Hearp.
He married
Mary Elizabeth Holt Hearp April 27, 1946, who survives.
He was owner and operator of Guy’s T.V. & Radio repair for many years. He later worked for Dan River Inc. in the sewing room.
He was of the Pentecostal Holiness Faith, and was a veteran of the U.S. Army having served during WWII.
He was predeceased by two sisters, Elsie Haymore and Ruth Barber.
A funeral will be 3 p.m. Sunday at Barker Funeral Home Chapel, with the Revs. Joe Beck and Ken Terry officiating. Interment
will follow in Highland Burial Park.

Jesse Meadows Sr.
DANVILLE, Va. - Jesse Willard Meadows Sr., 85, of 155 Holbrook Ave., died Thursday, Jan. 20, 2000, at Elder Care Nursing Home, Rocky Mount.
Born Jan. 20, 1915 in Hinton, W.Va., he was the son of Lonnie Wilson Meadows and Annie Briers Meadows.
He married
Mabel Bush Meadows, who survives.
He spent most of his life in Danville. He was an avid gardener and especially enjoyed growing tomatoes.
He was a retired supervisor of security guards with Dan River Inc.
In addition to his wife, survivors include two sons, David Wilson Meadows Sr. of Melborne, Fla. and Jesse Willard Meadows Jr. of Danville; two daughters, Betty Jean Stoy of San Diego and Ann Slaughter of Danville; two brothers, Carroll Meadows of Victoria, Texas, and Armand Meadows of Independence, Mo.; one sister, Mary Jean Hagen of Paducah, Ky.; six grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
A funeral will be 11 a.m. Monday at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Bill Soyars officiating. A private interment will be at a later time.
The family will receive friends at the residence.

Elizabeth Nichols
CLOVER, Va. - Elizabeth Judson Nichols, 89, of Mount Laurel Road died Thursday, Jan. 20, 2000, at Halifax Regional Hospital.
Born Aug. 14, 1910, in Halifax County, she was the daughter of Coleman McCalvin Nichols and Fannie Palmer Nichols.
She was a retired teacher, who taught for 45 years in the Halifax County School System. She was a member of Clover Baptist Church where she was a Sunday school teacher.
She was also a member of the Virginia Retired Teachers Association, Halifax County Retired Teachers Association and Clover Volunteer Fire Dept. Auxiliary.
Survivors include one brother, Bryan W. Nichols of Clover.
She was predeceased by three brothers, W.O. Nichols, Thomas Nichols Sr., and Louis Nichols, and one sister, Alice N. Salmon.
A funeral will be 2 p.m. Sunday, at Clover Baptist Church, with the Rev. Tom Walker officiating. Interment
will follow in the Clover cemetery.
The family will receive friends Saturday, from 7-8:30 p.m. at Brooks Funeral Home, and other times at the residence of Bryan and Lucille Nichols, 1099 Mount Laurel Road, Clover.
Florence Boatwright Sanford
DANVILLE, Va. - Florence Boatwright Sanford, 104, died Thursday, January 20, 2000 at her home, Birnam Wood.
Born November 26, 1895 in Danville, Va. Daughter of Mary Vaughan Boatwright and Herbert Lee Boatwright.
She was married
to Robert H. Sanford, who predeceased her.
She was also predeceased by three brothers and two sisters, Edgar V. Boatwright of Reidsville, NC; John G. Boatwright of Danville, H. Lee Boatwright, Jr. of Lively, VA, Alice B. Williamson of Danville and Marion B. Dudley of Richmond.
Survivors include four nieces, Carter B. Afflick of Blytheville, AR, Martha B. Corr and Elizabeth B. Updike, both of Danville and Alice Lee Boatwright of New York City: and six nephews: Witcher Dudley III and Lee P. Dudley both of Richmond, H. Lee Boatwright III of Ruxton, MD, John G.P. Boatwright of Johns Island, SC and Beverly V. Boatwright of Bellingham, WA. and Robert B. Williamson of Annapolis, MD.
Also surviving are 27 great nieces and nephews and 20 great-great nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, January 22, 2000 at 11:00 am at the residence, 66 Lake Heron Drive, the Rev. James Mathieson, officiating. A private graveside will be held in Green Hill.
The family will receive friends at Mrs. Sanford’s residence.

Laura Saunders
RINGGOLD, Va. - Laura Marie Hairston Saunders, 66, of 3660 Birch Creek Road, died Thursday, Jan. 20, 2000, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born April 24, 1933, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Robert Hairston and Laura M. Wheeler Hairston Lampkin.
She married
Percy R. Saunders, who predeceased her. She was a member of the Kentuck Missionary Baptist Church.
She was a homemaker and was employed with P. Lorillard Tobacco Company prior to her retirement.
Survivors include three daughters, Jean S. Womack of Danville, Angelia Saunders-Tyler of Silver Springs, Md., and Teresa Gail Saunders Hackett of Germantown, Md.; three sons, Michael R. Saunders of Blairs, R. Wayne Saunders of Richmond, and Randy W. Saunders of the residence; five sisters, Garnetta Inge and Barbara Hampton, both of Axton, Florence Dillard, Lorine Brim, and Elizabeth Broadnax, all of Eden, N.C., and two brothers, Robert Lee Hairston and Ophus Lampkin, both of Philadelphia.
A funeral will be 11 a.m. Monday at Kentuck Missionary Baptist Church, with the Rev. Jesse Fitz officiating. Interment
will follow in the Saunders Family cemetery.

Russell Richard Scruggs
DANVILLE, Va. - Russel Richard Scruggs, 94 died Jan. 20, 2000 in a Danville Nursing Home. Born Jan. 4, 1906 in Charlotte County, Va., he was the widower of Mattie Elder Scruggs and son of Issac H. Scruggs and Clara Garrison Scruggs. He was a retired farmer.
Surviving relatives include 2 sons, Russell L. Scruggs of Danville, Kenny I. Scruggs of Midlothian; 2 sisters, Ruth Cook Watson of Farmville and Lucille Scruggs of Darlington Heights; 4 grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.
He was preceeded in death by one brother, Walker Scruggs.
Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Saturday in Spring Creek Baptist Church in Darlington Heights with interment in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends at the church Saturday from 10 to 11 a.m.

GRETNA, Va. - Bertha Virginia Short Shelton, 87, of 6633 Rockford School Road died Friday, Jan. 21, 2000, in Riverside Health Care Center.
Born Feb. 1, 1912, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of John H. Short and Hester Dalton Short.
She married
James Carl Shelton Sr., who survives.
She was retired from Dan River Mills and was a homemaker.
In addition to her husband of the residence, she is survived by one son, James C. Shelton Jr. of Maywood, N.J.
She was predeceased by three sisters, Fannie Rowland, Ora Doss and Mary Samuels, and two brothers, Jehue Short and C.H. Short.
A funeral will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Colbert-Moran Chapel, with Elder Raymond Goad officiating. Interment
will follow in Gretna Burial Park.
