Peggy Allen

DANVILLE, Va. - Peggy Jane Allen, 51, of 440 Chestnut Street, died Thursday, August 1, 2002, at her residence.

Born Dec. 26, 1950, in Danville, she was the daughter of Minnie Moorman.

She was married to Harvey L. Allen, who predeceased her.

She is survived by one son, Johnnie M. Cabell Jr.; one daughter, Tiffany Jane Swann; and one grandson.

The funeral will be held 1 p.m. Monday at Fisher and Watkins Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Dr. James Cabell officiating. Interment will follow at Highland Burial Park.

The family will receive friends at the residence.

"Tommy" Byrd

DURHAM, N.C. - "Tommy" Byrd, beloved husband and father, died Friday, August 2, 2002, at Durham Regional Hospital. He was 68 years old.

Tommy was born October 4, 1933, in Durham, N.C., to the late Junie Daniel and Ellie Stewart Byrd.

Tommy served in the U.S. Navy as a medical coreman and later graduated from the Duke Radiological Technician Program. Tommy and his wife, Harriet Hackett, moved to Danville, Va., where he managed the Radiology Technician Dept. at Danville Memorial Hospital for a number of years. During this time, he also served as President of the Virginia Radiological Technician Association for one year.

In 1974, Tommy and his family returned to Durham to operate a family business known as DuVal Hackett Florist. Tommy enjoyed operating the business and designing lovely floral arrangements for his customers. He enjoyed sports, especially the Duke Blue Devils and Atlanta Braves. An avid golfer, Tommy was formerly a member of Croasdaile Country Club, the Durham Sertoma Club and Elk's Lodge.

Tommy is survived by his wife of 44 years, Harriet Hackett Byrd; two sons, Jeffrey Stewart Byrd, Thomas DuVal Byrd and wife, Lisa; one sister, Evelyn Cvacho and husband, Dan; one brother, Lewis Byrd and wife, Teresa; three grandchildren, David, Hannah, and Rachel Byrd; and several cousins, nieces and nephews.

Tommy was preceded in death by his brother, Douglas Warren Byrd.

A graveside service will be held 11:30 a.m. Tuesday at Chapel Hill Memorial Cemetery. Father John. G. Parish, pastor of St. Matthew Catholic Church, will preside.

The family will receive friends Monday evening from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at Hall-Wynne Funeral Home.

Christine Giles Fuller

EDEN, N.C. - Christine Giles Fuller, 75, died Saturday, Aug. 3, 2002, at Moses Cone Hosiptal.

Born Dec. 10, 1926, in Burkesville, Va., she was the daughter of William Lloyd Giles and Lottie Marion Jones Giles.

She was married to Fred Franklin Fuller on Jan, 4, 1947. She was a homemaker, devoted to her family and was of the Baptist faith.

In addition to her husband of the residence, she is survived by four sons, Roger Fuller of Asheboro, Tommy Fuller of Pelham, Tony Fuller of Pelham and Mark Fuller of Durham; one sister, Alice Giles Cobb of Reidsville; two grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

The family will be at the residence, at 140 Fuller Drive on Highway 700, Pelham.

Fair Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Less Alton Hardy

KEELING, Va. - Less Alton Hardy, 86, of 3741 Keeling Drive, died Saturday, Aug. 3, 2002, at Danville Regional Medical Center. He had been declining in health for one year.

Born Oct. 31, 1915, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of V.W. Hardy and Betty Dodson Hardy.

He was married to Illah Mills Hardy on Oct. 7, 1944. He was a foreman with Newport News Ship Building and Dry Dock Company for 25 years prior to retirement. He moved to the Keeling community in 1977 and was a former member of the Dan River Ruritan Club. He was also a veteran of the Army Air Corp and served in World War II.

In addition to his wife of the residence, he is survived by one daughter, Barbara Hardy Coon of Houston, Texas; three sisters, Lorrena H. Adams of Keeling, Betty H. McLaughlin of Keeling and Audrey H. Walker of Ringgold; and two grandchildren.

He was predeceased, in addition to his parents, by one brother, William D. Hardy.

The graveside funeral will be held 10 a.m. Monday in Highland Burial Park with Rev. Tom Erwin officiating.

The family will receive friends at the residence.

Otis Calvin Hardy

DANVILLE, Va. - Otis Calvin Hardy, 75, of 321 Grenadier Circle, died Saturday, August 3, 2002, at his residence.

Born January 2, 1927, in Pittsylvania County, Va., he was the son of John Thomas Hardy and Eva McDaniel Hardy, who are both deceased.

Mr. Hardy was married to Ila Horsley Hardy, who survives. Mr. Hardy lived in the Brosville community of Pittsylvania County for a number of years prior to moving to Westover Hills. He was a graduate of Brosville High School and was of the Baptist faith. He retired as a supervisor at Dan River Mills after 43 years of service. He had been in declining health for eight years.

In addition to his wife of the residence, he is survived by two sons, Dennis R. Hardy and wife, Cindy, of Danville, Otis "Butch" Hardy Jr. and wife, Tammy, of Danville; one daughter, Vickie Hardy Bailey and husband, John, of Danville; one sister, Shirley Hardy McDaniel and husband, Lawrence, of Cascade; and seven grandchildren, Jaimie Hardy, Jason Hardy, Peyton Hardy, Courtlyn Hardy, Matt Bailey, Cameron Bailey, and Rachel Bailey.

The graveside funeral will be held 2:00 p.m. Monday, August 5, 2002, at Danville Memorial Gardens with Rev. Dr. LeRoy Clack officiating. Interment will also be held at Danville Memorial Gardens.

The family will receive friends Sunday, August 4, 2002, 7 until 8:30 p.m. at Swicegood Funeral Home and other times at the residence, 321 Grenadier Circle.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be made to the Danville Life Saving Crew, 202 Christopher Lane, Danville, VA 24541.

William Alexander Heath

DANVILLE, Va. - "Little William" entered heaven quietly and peacefully on Saturday morning, August 3, 2002.

He had been ill since birth but his death was unexpected.

Born April 3, 2001, in Danville, he was the son of William Heath and Sherri Myers Heath.

In addition to his parents, he is survived by his grandparents, Montie and Deborah Heath of Chatham; Bill and Betty Myers of Providence, N.C.; and aunt and uncle, Bobby and Monica Pleasant of Chatham.

A graveside service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Monday, August 5, at the family cemetery on Irish Road with Rev. Daryl Joyce officiating.

The family will receive friends at the residence, 4537 Irish Road, Chatham, VA.

Howard L. Hodnett

CHATHAM, Va. - Howard L. Hodnett, 79, died Friday, Aug. 2, 2002, in Riverside Health Care Center in Danville.

Born March 31, 1923, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of the late Milton and Odella Wright Hodnett.

He was a member of Cherrystone Baptist Church, where he served as a member of the Usher Board and Missionary Circle #2. He was a security guard for Lorillard Tobacco Company.

Survivors include one son, Tommy W. Hodnett of Columbus, Ga.; seven daughters, Barbara L. Waller of Roanoke, Earlene Medley of Chatham, Jean Jones of Blairs, Elner Bennett, Mary Terry, and Nancy Luck, all of Danville, and Linda Wiley of Wilmington, N.C.; four brothers, Eugene Hodnett, Cecil Hodnett, and Morris Hodnett, all of Chatham, and Eric Hodnett of Seattle, Wash.; sixteen grandchildren and seventeen great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by a sister, Dorothy Robinson; and six brothers, William, George, Herman, Pearson, Irvin and Alfonza Hodnett.

The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at Cherrystone Baptist Church with Rev. Floyd O. Jones officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.

Viewing will be 1-7 p.m. Sunday at the Chapel of Howerton Funeral Home and Monday from 10 a.m. until time of service at the church.

The family is at the residence of Rev. and Mrs. Floyd Jones, 417 Warehouse Road, Blairs, VA.

Lillie Lloyd Martin

SOUTH BOSTON, Va. - Lillie Lloyd Martin, 80, of 116 Rosehill Drive, Apt. 30, died Friday, Aug. 2, 2002, at Halifax Regional Hospital.

Born Jan. 1, 1922, in Halifax County, she was the daughter of Charlie Lloyd and Mattie Moore Lloyd.

She was a member of First Baptist Church of Millstone.

She is survived by one son, Charlie (Buck) Martin of Rustburg; five daughters, Doris M. Conner of Nathalie, Virginia M. Holt of Nathalie, Myrtle M. Williams of South Boston, Betty M. Hailey of Halifax and Jean M. Anderson of South Boston; one brother, Jesse Lloyd of Brookneal; two sisters, Thelma Martin of Randolph and Louise Covington of South Boston; eleven grandchildren; fourteen great-grandchildren; and one god grandchild.

She was predeceased by two brothers, Dewey and James Lloyd; and two sisters, Evelyn and Gracie Martin.

The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Sunday at First Baptist Church of Millstone with the Rev. Bob Watts and Rev. Dr. Bill Leonard officiating. Interment will take place in the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. at Powell Funeral Home and other times at the residence.

Lonnie Johnson Newton Jr.

NATHALIE, Va. - Lonnie Johnson Newton Jr., 83, of 1157 Cody Road, died Friday, Aug. 2, 2002, at his home.

Born Nov. 5, 1918, in Granville County, he was the son of Lonnie Johnson Newton Sr. and Allene Watkins Newton.

He was married to Ruby Conner Newton, who survives. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Republican Grove and was retired from the Baptist Sunday School Board in Nashville, Tenn.

In addition to his wife of the residence, he is survived by two sons, Lonnie J. Newton III of Hendersonville, Tenn. and T. Lawson Newton of Advance, N.C.; one sister, Elizabeth N. Taylor of Oxford, N.C.; three brothers, Nelson Newton of Dunn, N.C., James Newton of Rose Hill, N.C. and John Newton of Wilmington, N.C.; and four grandchildren.

He was predeceased by one brother, Taylor Newton.

The funeral will be held 3 p.m. Sunday at First Baptist Church of Republican Grove with the Rev. Shelton Miles and Rev. Dr. Melvin Bradshaw officiating. Interment will take place in the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the residence.

The family suggest memorials be made to the First Baptist Church of Republican Grove Building Fund, 4210 Leda Grove Road, Nathalie, VA 24577.

Karen Turner Wells

DANVILLE, Va. - Karen Turner Wells departed this life Friday, August 2, 2002, after a courageous battle with cancer.

She was born May 29, 1950, and was the daughter of the late Fred Lee Turner Sr. and Katherine Meadors Turner.

Mrs. Wells attended Danville Public Schools and was a 1968 graduate of George Washington High School.

For the last 27 years, she was employed in The General District Court, serving as the Clerk for the last 11 years. Mrs. Wells was a member of The Danville Humane Society, The Atlantic Beach Shag Club, and The Danville Golf Club. Mrs. Wells attended First Baptist Church.

Surviving are her husband of 19 years, C. Philip Wells III of the residence. Her brother and sister-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Lee Turner Jr. of Chatham. Her nieces, Lisa L. Turner of Agva Duke, California and Staci T. Wall of Chatham, Laura Marchetto and nephew, Alberto Marchetti, both of New York, N.Y. Two great-nephews, Turner and Raines Wall of Chatham and one great-niece, Anne-Meadors Wall, also of Chatham.

Funeral services will be held Monday, August 5, 2002, at 2 p.m. from The First Baptist Church by The Reverend Dr. Joey Faucette. Interment will follow in Highland Burial Park.

Townes Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements and the family will receive friends at the residence, 103 Acorn Lane.

Arnold 'Arnie' G. Brandon Sr.

CATAWBA, N.C. - Arnold "Arnie" G. Brandon Sr., 56, of 6083 Harwell Road, died Sunday, Dec. 1, 2002, at his residence.

Born July 27, 1946, in Caswell County, he was the son of the late Robert Allen and Annie Bet Snow Brandon.

He attended Center United Methodist Church, where he was active in the Methodist Men's Group.

In addition to his wife, Brownye C. Brandon, of the home, he is survived by two daughters, Dawn Hensley and Ginnye Brandon, both of Catawba; one son, Gwynn of Burlington; four grandchildren; one sister, Sally Shelton of Danville, Va.; one brother, Hezekiah Brandon, of Danville, Va.

In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by two sisters, Sarah Watlington and Janie Brandon and three brothers, Henry Brandon, William Brandon, and Edward Brandon.

A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Center United Methodist Church Cemetery in Catawba with the Rev. Peter McGuire officiating.

The family received friends 7-8:30 p.m. Tuesday at Drum Funeral Home & Cremations in Claremont.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Center United Methodist Church, Methodist Men's Group, 4945 Sherrills Ford Road, Catawba, NC, 28609.

Joseph 'Joe' Campbell

DANVILLE, Va. - Joseph "Joe" Campbell, 101, of 208 Westhampton Avenue, Danville, Va., passed away Tuesday morning, Dec. 3, at Roman Eagle Memorial Home, where he had been a patient since March 1999.

He was born in Bay Minette, Ala. on Feb. 14, 1901, to Robert Owen Campbell and Grace (Wilson) Campbell. Most of his life was spent in Mobile.

In Mobile, he worked as a men's clothing salesman for almost 60 years at establishments such as Buckman's, Gehrhart's, Steins, Melvin Webers, London Woolen Mills, Robert Hall, Monty's in Prichard and Paulmont's in the Bel Air Mall.

He was a member of the Nor-Dan Church of Christ, being baptized into Christ at age 88 by Minister John M. Hill.

He is survived by his only daughter, Josephine "Josie" Miner-Storms and her husband, Jimmy Storms of the residence; one brother, Robert "Louey" Campbell of Mobile, Ala.; a niece, Yvonne Bryant of Mobile, Ala.; four grandchildren, Mark Miner of Vinton, Joseph Miner of Cincinnati, Ohio, Carmen King of Fayetteville, N.C. and Roy Miner Jr. of Richmond. Nine great-grandchildren also survive.

In addition to many other relatives in the Mobile area, he is survived by his long time friend, Paul G. Reynolds and his devoted visitor, Andrew Hicks, both of Danville.

He was predeceased by two brothers and three sisters, his former wife, C. Bernice "Deese" Campbell and his former son-in-law, Roy W. Miner Sr.

The family will receive visitors Thursday, Dec. 5, 6-8 p.m. at Swicegood Funeral Home. Interment will be private.

His daughter suggests that memorials may be made to the Danville Humane Society and mailed to P.O. Box 3352, Danville, VA 24543 or 208 Westhampton Ave., Danville, VA 24541, honoring his love for all animals.
