Howard Wilkerson Sr.
CASCADE, Va. - Howard Glenn Wilkerson, Sr., 75, of 2540 Cascade Road, died Thursday, Jan. 20, 2000, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Nov. 24, 1924, he was the son of Jim Wilkerson and Rosa Adams Wilkerson.
He was married
to Lucille Williams Wilkerson, who survives.
He was a veteran of the Army and was employed by Webster Brick Co. prior to his retirement.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include four daughters, Lucinda Caldwell of Eden, N.C., Margaret Bruce and Deborah Crockett, both of Martinsville, and Gerildine Price of Dale City; four sons, Howard G. Wilkerson Jr. of Eden, Alphonso Wilkerson and Sammie Wilkerson, both of Cascade, and Carl Wilkerson of Woodbridge; one sister, Ardell Hairston of Cascade; and numerous grandchildren.
He was predeceased by one son, Jerry Clark Wilkerson; and two brothers, Ernest Wilkerson and Pervis Wilkerson.
A funeral will be 2 p.m. Monday at Shiloh Baptist Church, Cascade, with the Rev. John W. Tinsley officiating. Burial will be in the Williams and Hairston Family cemetery, with military rites conducted by the American Legion Post No. 29.
The family will receive friends 7-8 p.m. Sunday at Fisher and Watkins Funeral Home chapel and at other times at the residence.
Bobby E. Wofford
SOUTH HAVEN, Miss. - Bobby Eugene Wofford, 68, died Saturday, Jan. 8, 2000, at his residence.
Born July 6, 1931, in Charlotte, N.C., he was the son of Joseph L. Wofford and Ruby B. Wofford.
He married
Nancy King Wofford, who predeceased him. He graduated from Schoolfield High School and Clemson College. He served in the U.S. Army as a helicopter pilot, and received many awards including the Bronze Star. He was a veteran of the Korean War and the Vietnam War. He was commander of the Air Field at Fort Campbell, Ky. He worked in the Civil Service until his retirement in April 1999. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Clarksville, Tenn., where he resided for 34 years. He moved to Mississippi six months ago.
Survivors include two daughters, Mary Lu Browder and Cynthia W. Gray of Clarksville, Tenn.; one sister, Eileen Myers of Ringgold, Va.; 10 grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
In addition to his wife, he was predeceased by one son, William J. (Billy) Wofford and one daughter, Linda W. Ferrell.
A military funeral was held at the West Tennesse Veterans cemetery in Memphis, Tenn., and a memorial service was held at McReynolds, Nave Funeral Home in Clarksville, Tenn., on Saturday, with the Rev. Roger Freeman officiating.
The family received friends Thursday at Twin Oakes Funeral Home in South Haven, Miss.
Claudia Cooter
VENICE, Fla. - Claudia Ricker Cooter, 91, died Thursday, Jan. 13, 2000.
Born May 15, 1908, in Madison County, N.C., she was the daughter of Rosen Burnside and Laura Brown Ricker.
She was married
to Edgar Newton Cooter, who predeceased her.
She was a long-time resident of Danville, Va., before moving to Venice in 1996. She worked at Dan River Inc., Schoolfield Recreation Department, before retiring in 1970. She was a member of West End Christian Church, Disciples of Christ, in Danville. She was active in the church, Girl Scouts, Bridge Clubs and Quilting Clubs.
Survivors include two daughters, Ramona C. Hodnett of Clemons, N.C., and Evelyn C. Foley of Venice, Fla; one son, Guy Ricker Cooter of Danville; six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
A funeral will be held 2 p.m. Monday at West End Christian Church. A private interment will follow.
The family will receive friends 1-2 p.m. Monday at West End Christian Church, 130 Montague St.

Nancy Ferrell
DANVILLE, Va. – Nancy Lee Fitzgerald Ferrell, 60, of 156 Kennon Drive died Friday, Jan. 21, 2000, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born April 8, 1939, in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of Jim Buck Fitzgerald and Sallie Clark Fitzgerald.
She was married
to Julius Ferrell, who predeceased her.
She was a member of Loyal Baptist Church and participated in the gospel chorus, Janie P. Gavin Missionary, and Fidelis Sunday School Class. She was also a member of Buds of Unity Tents Lodge #423.
Survivors include one son, Harvey Lee Ferrell of Danville; and five daughters, Earline E. Ferrell, Stephanie Ferrell-Saunders, Stacey L. Ferrell and Shawn P. Ferrell, all of Danville, and Brenda Lee Roberts of Portsmouth, N.H.; and four grandchildren.
A funeral will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Loyal Baptist Church, with the Rev. L. Maxwell officiating. Interment
will be in Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends Monday from 2-8 p.m. at L.H. Brooks & Brothers Funeral Home, and other times at the residence.
Luther Ingram
NATHALIE, Va. – Luther Layfette Ingram, 88, of 2028 Doctor Merritt Road died Saturday, Jan. 22, 2000, at The Woodview, South Boston.
Born Feb. 5, 1911, in Virginia, he was a son of Charlie Hudson Ingram and Fannie Spencer Ingram.
He was a veteran of the Army, serving in WWII and the Korean Conflict. He was of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include two brothers, Arthur Ingram of Nathalie and Garland Ingram of Los Angeles; and two sisters, Edith I. Powell of South Boston and Elizabeth I. Martin of Nathalie.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by two sisters and three brothers.
A funeral will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at Brooks Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. David Dickerson officiating. Burial will be in the Winns Creek Baptist Church cemetery in Halifax.
The family will receive friends on Monday from 7-8:30 p.m. at Brooks Funeral Home.
Val Sedgwick
DANVILLE, Va. - Vladimir “Val” Momert Sedgwick, 95, of 316 Northmont Blvd., died Saturday, Jan. 22, 2000, at his residence after six months of declining health.
Born Feb. 10, 1904, in Waterbury, Conn., he was the son of Vincient Sedgwick and Nina Kempes Sedgwick.
He was married
to Itasca Wiles Sedgwick, who predeceased him March 8, 1993.
He lived in Danville for 22 years and was the last surviving member of his generation.
Prior to his retirement, he worked for the federal government in office machine repair service.
He was a veteran of the Navy during World War I. He was a member of the Disabled American Veterans Association, AARP and North Main Baptist Church.
In addition to his wife, he was predeceased by one sister, Irene S. McKanon.
A graveside service will be 11 a.m. Monday at Highland Burial Park, with the Rev. Walter Yancey officiating.
Military honors will be performed by American Legion Post 1097.
The family will receive friends at the residence.

Clyde Travis
DANVILLE, Va. – Clyde David Travis, 62, of 38 Hylton Ave. died Sunday, Jan. 23, 2000, at Danville Regional Medical Center after several years of declining health.
Born Oct. 8, 1937, in Danville, he was a son of Wesley Travis and Thelma Booth Travis.
He was married
to Carole Coleman Travis.
He was a veteran of the Army, serving from 1960-63. He lived most of his life in Danville, where he was retired from Associated Services Inc.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include two sons, Clyde David Travis Jr. of Broken Arrow, Okla., and Randy Travis of Danville; one daughter, Dianna Travis Martin of Greenville, S.C.; one sister, Marie T. Martin of Danville; and six grandchildren.
A graveside service will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at Highland Burial Park, with the Rev. Ralph McCormack officiating. The family will receive friends Monday from 7-8:30 p.m. at Swicegood Funeral Home, and other times at he residence.
John Whitehead
LANDOVER, Md. – John Leroy Whitehead, 60, of 1925 Palmer Park Road, died Wednesday, Jan. 19, 2000, at Prince George Chevely General Hospital.
Born March 20, 1939, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of the late Farist Whitehead and Hester Carter Whitehead, who survives.
He was married
to Maggie Swann, who also survives.
He was employed with Trailways Bus Station in Washington, D.C. prior to his retirement on disability.
In addition to his mother of Blairs, and wife of Landover, survivors include four daughters, Roslyn Budd, Albertina Swann and Justine Swann, all of Landover, Md., and Vickie Hope of Washington; one son, Michael Whitehead of Oxford Hills, Md.; two sisters, Mary Anderson and Patricia Stephens, both of Blairs and numerous grandchildren.
A funeral will be 1 p.m. Tuesday at White Oak Grove Baptist Church, Dry Fork, Va., with the Rev. Edward L. Pope officiating. Burial will be in Greater Triumph Baptist Church cemetery, Chatham.
The family will receive friends at the residence of his mother, 2109 Malmaison Road, Blairs.
Florence Worley
DANVILLE, Va. – Florence Tuck Worley, 105, died Saturday, Jan. 22, 2000, in Riverside Health Care Center.
Born Oct. 4, 1894, in Gretna, she was a daughter of David and Sally Tuck.
She was married
to Robert J. Worley, who predecesed her in 1933. She was a resident of Danville for over 60 years and was a member fo West Main Baptist Church.
Survivors include one son, Edwin L. Worley of Danville; two daughters, Jean W. Phillips of Richmond and Irene W. Anglin of Virginia Beach; 13 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren, and 4 great-great-grandchildren.
In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by one daughter, Helen W. Franklin; two sons,Leonard V. “Shorty” Worley and Robert J. Worley, Jr.; two sisters, Irma T. Bradshear and Lucy T. Lewis; one brother, Ferris Tuck; one grandson, Steve Worley, and one great-grandson, Rusty Beach.
A funeral will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at Townes Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Gilmer Setliff officiating. Interment
will be in Danville Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends at Townes Funeral Home Monday, from 7-8:30 p.m. and other times at the residence of Edwin Worley, 902 Westover Dr.
Nannie Lee Bobbitt Doss
GRETNA, Va. - Nannie Lee Bobbitt Doss, age 93, died Monday, January 24, 2000 in Gretna Health Care Center.
Born December 4, 1906 in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of the late Harvey Bobbitt and Ada Owen Bobbitt. Mrs. Doss was predeceased by her husband, Lynwood Jack Doss; a son-in-law, Cecil Brown; a sister, Lizzie Burkes; three brothers, Riley Bobbitt, Coleman Bobbitt, and Willie Bobbitt. She was the oldest member of Liberty Christian Church being a member for seventy-six years and a home maker.
She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Harry Byrd and Mildred Doss of Penhook; a daughter, Dotsie Brown of Penhook; two sisters, Thelma Tuck and Kathleen Hedrick both of Danville; two grandchildren, Mike Brown and Todd Brown; two great-grandchildren, Joy and Cory.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, January 26, 2000 at Liberty Christian Church by Wayne Grinnell, Minister and Ted Clifton, Minister. Burial will follow in the Doss Family cemetery.
The family will receive friends Tuesday evening from 7-8:30 p.m. at Colbert-Moran Funeral Home and other times at the residence of her daughter, Dotsie Brown, 1392 Armstrong Road, Penhook. Colbert-Moran Funeral Home, Gretna is in charge of arrangements.
