MECHANICSVILLE, Va. - Carlos Farrish, 40, of 6458 Robin Way Road, died Saturday, Jan. 22, 2000, at the Medical Center Hospital in Richmond.
Born May 3, 1959 in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of James Earl Stokes and Mattie Stokes Farrish, who survive.
He was married
to Pamela Farrish, who survives.
He spent most of his childhood in Caswell County, N.C., before moving to Richmond, where he was employed as a chef at The Country Club of Richmond until he was disabled. Before moving to Richmond, he was a member of Spirit Filled Holiness Church.
In addition to his wife and his parents, of Pelham, N.C., survivors include two daughters, Jovianna Farrish and Dashaia Farrish, both of the residence; two step sons, Bryant and Kelvin, both of the residence; one brother, Bobby L. Farrish of Ruffin, N.C.; four sisters, Brenda Austin and Vivian Farrish, both of Yanceyville, N.C.; Audrey Farrish of Semora, N.C.; and Hattie Boswell of Pelham.
A funeral will be held Thursday at 2 p.m. at Spirit Filled Holiness Church with Pastor Catherine Keen officiating.
The family will receive friends from 7-8 p.m. Wednesday at Fulton Funeral Home and at other times at the residence of his parents, 3846 Allison Road, Pelham.
Clyde Freeman
CHATHAM, Va. - Clyde W. Freeman, 77, of 860 Anderson Road, died Monday, Jan. 24, 2000, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born April 24, 1922, in Charlotte, N.C., he was the son of Fred Freeman and Molly Pyrons Freeman.
He was married
to Bessie Prather of the residence, who survives. He was a retired salesman and served in the U.S. Army during WWII.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include one daughter, Brenda Schuller of Florence, S.C.; one son, Mike Freeman of Florence, S.C.; three step daughters, Betty Bradner of Chatham, Sue Adkins of Climax, and Lois Knight of Fort Myers, Fla.; two step sons, Jack Walden of Danville and J.C. Walden of Climax; one sister, Nadine Boaz of Kingmen, Ariz., and two brothers, Paul Freeman of Kingman, Az., and Wayne Freeman of Danville.
A graveside funeral will be 11 a.m. Wednesday in Highland Burial Park with the Rev. Bert Johnson officiating.
Military rites will be performed by American Legion Post #325.
The family will receive friends Tuesday, from 7-8 p.m. at Scott Funeral Home, and other times at the residence.
Woodrow Motley
DANVILLE, Va. - Woodrow Lee Motley, 74, of 2640 Stony Mill School Road died Saturday, Jan. 22, 2000, in the Veterans Hospital in Salem after a decline in health of 12 years.
Born Nov. 16, 1925, in Java, he was the son of James Robert Motley and Ida Saunders Motley Rorer. He was married
to Ola Toler Motley.
He had lived all his life in Pittsylvania County. He worked more than 25 years for Dan River Inc. and then Fieldcrest Mills Inc. in Eden, N.C., where he had retired as a fixer with over 20 years of service.
He was of the Holiness faith. He served in the Army during WWII and was a prisoner of war. He served in Rhineland Battle in the Central Europe Campaign, where he received the Good Conduct Medal, Bronze Star Medal, American Theater Ribbon, Meritorious Unit Award, European African Middle Theater Ribbon and the WWII Victory Ribbon.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include one son, Dennis Wayne Motley of Ringgold; one daughter, Linda Motley Coe of Brosville, and three grandchildren.
A funeral will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel with the Rev. Bennett Shelton officiating. Burial will be in Danville Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends Monday from 7-8:30 at the funeral home, and other times at the residence.
Patricia Setliff
DANVILLE, Va. - Patricia Luther Setliff, 59, of 837 Stokesland Ave., died Sunday, Jan. 23, 2000, at her residence after one year of declining health.
Born May 29, 1940, in Danville, she was the daughter of Carl Luther and Ila Pugh Luther McDowell.
She was married
to Rufus Lee Setliff, who survives.
She lived in various parts of the world while traveling with her husband during his military career.
She had lived in Danville for the past 12 years.
She was a homemaker and a member of Calvary Baptist Church.
In addition to her husband of the residence, survivors include two sons, Lee Setliff and Anthony Setliff, both of the residence; one daughter, Lynn Bernardo of Chicago; one brother, Robert McDowell of Danville; and five grandchildren.
A funeral will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Swicegood Funeral Home with the Rev. J. Richard Markham officiating. Burial will be at Mountain View cemetery.
The family will receive friends Tuesday, from 7-8:30 p.m., at Swicegood Funeral Home, and other times at the residence.
Elwanda Wellman
DANVILLE, Va. - Elwanda June Coulter Wellman, 63, of 200 Kemper Rd. died Saturday, Jan. 22, 2000, at Laurel Meadows Nursing Home, Laurel Fork.
Born May 2, 1936, in Maysil, W.Va., she was the daughter of Joseph Edward Coulter and Mary Helen Taylor Coulter.
She had lived in Danville since 1980. She worked at Riverside Health Care Center as a dietician. She was of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include four sons, Keith Edward Jones of San Diego, and Gary Wayne Jones, Ralph Jeffery Jones, and Patrick Allen Jones, all of Danville; two daughters, Debra Carol Slomeski of Erie, Penn., and Patricia Coulter of Charleston, W.Va.; one sister, Barbara Zahurak, of Charleston, W.Va.; three brothers, Gene Coulter of Oakland, Calif., and Robert Coulter and Charles Coulter, both of Charleston, W.Va.; two step brothers, Larry Bush and Gary Bush, both of Charleston, W.Va., and 18 grandchildren.
She was predeceased by two sons, Walter Russell Jones and Michael Jones.
There will be a private memorial service at a later date.

Tony Adkins
DANVILLE, Va. - Tony McKinley Adkins, 55, of 570 Iris Lane, A1 Trailer Park Lot # 18, died Monday, Jan. 24, 2000, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Jan. 6, 1945, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of Gossie McKinley Adkins and Myrtle Adkins Adkins.
He worked as an auto mechanic at Parrish Paint and Body. He was of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include one son, Randy L. Adkins of Danville; one daughter, Beverly L. Boyd of Pelham, N.C., and four grandchildren.
A graveside funeral will be 4 p.m. Thursday at the Adkins Family cemetery in Callands with the Rev. Jerry Joseph officiating.

Vera Cheek
DANVILLE, Va. - Vera Gertrude Mitchell Cheek, 92, of 106 Vine Circle died Tuesday, Jan. 25, 2000, in Riverside Health Care Center after a lengthy decline in health and an eight-month stay in the hospital.
Born March 5, 1907, in Bedford County, Va., she was the daughter of the late Emmett W. Mitchell and Daisy Ashwell Mitchell.
She was married
to the late Charlie Guy Cheek on October 23, 1926, who predeceased her on December 29, 1974.
In April of 1942 Mrs. Cheeks’ family moved to the Ringgold community where she resided until 1993 when her health began to fail and she moved to Vine Circle to live with her daughter and son-in-law. She was employed by Dan River Inc. in the # 5 Sewing Room of the Schoolfield Division as a pillow case machine operator until her retirement. She was a member of the Palestine Baptist Church in Huddleston, Va.
Survivors include one daughter, Madine Cheek Howell of the residence; one son-in-law, Otis T. Howell of the residence; one brother, Frank M. Mitchell of Danville; a granddaughter and her husband, Kathy & Ricky Matthews of Rocky Mount; a grandson and his wife, O.T. & Judy Howell of Roanoke; one great-granddaughter, Heather Matthews of Rocky Mount, and two great-grandsons, Colby and Peyton Howell of Roanoke.
She was predeceased by four brothers, Walker Mitchell, Charles Mitchell, Mahlon Mitchell and Wythe Mitchell, and two sisters, Nannie Mitchell and Ruth M. Dellis.
A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel with the Rev. Carl Burger officiating. Interment
will be at Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends at the residence, 106 Vine Circle, Danville, off of the South Boston Road.
Curtis Fain
DANVILLE, Va. - Curtis Ernest Fain, 80, of 143 Tamworth Drive, died Tuesday, Jan. 25, 2000, at Danville Regional Medical Center after one year of declining health and a two week stay in the hospital.
Born Dec. 27, 1919, in Patrick County, he was the son of S.I. “Ike” Fain and “Tiny” Conway Fain.
He was married
first to Dovie McAlexander Fain, who predeceased him in 1975, and then to Shirley Stevenson Fain, who survives. He was a member of Keen Street Baptist Church and a former member of Fontaine Baptist Church in Martinsville. He lived his life in Martinsville and Danville. He was retired from E.I. Dupont with 30 years of service, where he worked in the Insulation Dept. He also served in the 95th Army/Air Force Bomb Squadron in England during WWII.
In addition to his wife, survivors include one son, William C. Fain of Martinsville; one daughter, Bernice Svedlow of Reading, Mass.; one brother, B.R. Fain of Spencer; one sister, Elva Gilley of Axton, and three grandchildren.
In addition to his first wife, he was predeceased by one brother, Eldridge Varner, and one sister, Hattie Clark.
A funeral will be 11 a.m. Friday at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel with the Revs. Tom Brown and Daryl Joyce officiating. Interment
will be at Highland Burial Park.

Jimmy Gilbert
MARTINSVILLE, Va. - Jimmy Langhorne Gilbert, 66, of 200 Major Court, died Saturday, Jan. 22, 2000, at The Memorial Hospital of Martinsville and Henry County.
Born Aug. 25, 1933, in Keeling, he was the son of Grover Gilbert and Ellen Cox Gilbert Reynolds.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and worked as a stable caretaker until his decline in health.
Survivors include two sisters, Nellie Lancaster of Danville and Arlene Netzer of Silver Spring, Md.
He was predeceased by four sisters, Blanch Ricketts, Florine Gilbert, Thelma G. Adams, and Bessie G. Griffith; and five
brothers, Jesse Gilbert, John Gilbert, Grover Gilbert Jr., Ernest Gilbert and Thomas Gilbert.
A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Barker Funeral Home with the Rev. Albert Moser and the Rev. Jack Robertson officiating. Interment
will be at Schoolfield cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the residence.
