Helen Bane
DANVILLE, Va. - Helen Davis Bane, of 214 Cambridge Drive, Surry Hills, died Wednesday, Jan. 26, 2000, in Roman Eagle Memorial Home where she had been a resident for the past two weeks.
She was born in Danville and was the daughter of John Davis and Carrie Davis.
She married
Floyd “Beanie” Bane who predeceased her March 11, 1986.
She lived most of her life in Danville where she was a bookkeeper for Danville Plumbing and Heating. Later she and her husband owned and operated Beanie’s Army and Navy Store. She was an active member of Moffett Memorial Baptist Church where she was Sunday school teacher. She was a lifetime member of the Surry Hills Par-T-Club, the Town and Country Garden Club, the Kaufman-Brydon Chatper # 87 Order of the Eastern Star and the Rebekkah Lodge. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
Survivors include two newphews James Hollie of Ringgold and Percy Hollie of Danville; and five nieces Mirene Merricks, Marion Atwater and Mary Massey, all of Danville; Connie Reed of Sun Lakes, Ariz; and Lucille Hughes of Yadkinville, N.C..
A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Moffett Memorial Baptist Church with the Rev. Lee Ellison and the Rev. Steve Carlton officiating. Interment
will be in Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends 12:30-2 p.m. at Moffett Memorial Baptist Church.

Edward Charles
DANVILLE, Va. - Edward William Charles, 79, formerly of 316 Chatelaine Ave., died Wednesday, Jan. 26, 2000, at Roman Eagle Memorial Home.
Born Nov. 2, 1920, in Brooklyn, N.Y., he was the son of Henry Charles and Ana Igoe Charles.
He married
Nellie Goad Charles, who predeceased him.
He was a veteran of the United States Army, ranking as military police officer having served during World War II. He made his home in Danville since the end of World War II, and worked for Dan River Inc.
Survivors include one son, Jerry Wayne Charles of Danville; and two grandchildren.
A memorial service will be 11 a.m. Friday at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Frederick J. Vicks officiating. A private interment will be at a later date.
The family will receive friends at the residence of Jerry and Peggy Charles, 133 Dovie Court.

Geraldine Harris
DANVILLE, Va. - Geraldine Silverstri Barnett Harris, 56, of 1712 Aspen St., died Tuesday, Jan. 25, 2000, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Dec. 15, 1943, in Danville, she was the daughter of Tony Silverstri and Mary Lou Sasser McNeil.
She was married
to Bobby R. Harris, who survives, on Aug. 12, 1989. She worked for the Danville Register & Bee as district manager of the circulation department. She lived most of her life in Danville and was of the Baptist faith.
In addition to her husband of the residence, survivors include one daughter, Marilu Lamothe of Danville; four step daughters, Tammy Brookman, Bonnie Dykes, Pattie Miller and Amy Harris, all of Danville; one brother, Steven McNeil of Greensboro, N.C., and eight grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel with the Rev. Larry Hill officiating. Interment
will be at Highland Burial Park.
The family received friends Thursday at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel, from 7:30-8:30 p.m., and other times at the residence.
Rosa Hill
DANVILLE, Va. - Rosa Lillian Stephens Rudder Hill, 74, of 453 Parker Road, died Wednesday, Jan. 26, 2000, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born April 14, 1925, in Roxboro, N.C., she was the daughter of James Stephens and Texi Bell Westbrook Clayton Stephens.
She married
William Edward Rudder, who predeceased her.
She worked as a nursing assistant at Danville’s Memorial Hospital until her retirement. She was a member of Gatewood Baptist Church, where she was a member of the Ladies Circle and the Ladies Adult Sunday School Class.
Survivors include two sons William D. Rudder of Chatham and Charles E. Rudder of Danville; one daughter Peggy J. Smith of Danville; two sisters Mary S. Loftis of Salisbury, N.C. and Margaret S. Clark of Roxboro, N.C.; nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by one daughter Linda C. Rudder; two brothers Elmer Stephens and Henry T. Stephens; four sisters Edna S. Davis, Virginia Barts, “Bigun” Solomon and “Sissy” S. Raynor; and one great-grandchild.
A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Gatewood Baptist Church with the Rev. John Gentry officiating. Burial will be in Danville Memorial Gardens.
The family received friends 7-8:30 p.m. Thursday at Barker Funeral Home and at other times at the residence.
Joyce Lewis
DANVILLE, Va. - Joyce Evans Lewis, 43, of 65 Ashlawn Drive, died Wednesday, Jan. 26, 2000, at her residence of several years of declining health.
Born June 14, 1956, in Danville, she was the daughter of the late Nathan D. Evans and Ollie Land Evans, who survives.
She married
Julian C. Lewis, Jr., who also survives.
She spent most of her life in Danville where she was a homemaker and of the Baptist faith.
In addition to her mother of Yanceyville, N.C. and her husband of the residence, survivors include one daughter Kathy R. Lewis of Danville; two sons Jason C. Lewis of the United States Navy, stationed in Le More, Calif., and Charles J. Lewis of Danville; one brother Elmer Evans of Providence, N.C.; five sisters Judy Talbott, Barbara Lynsky, Darlene Myers and Tammy Bates, all of Pelham, N.C. and Peggy Maxie of the Gatewood Community; and two grandchildren.
The family will receive friends at the residence.

Averett Lewis Jr.
DANVILLE, Va. - Averett Dodson Lewis Jr., 70, of 556 Mount Hermon Circle, died Thursday, Jan. 27, 2000, after one year of declining health.
Born Aug. 27, 1929, in Keeling, he was the son of Averett Dodson Lewis
Sr. and Clericsa Smith Lewis.
He was a veteran of the United States Army who served during the Korean Conflict. He was a farmer and a member of the American Legion Post No. 325. He lived his life in the Mount Hermon community of Pittsylvania County.
Survivors include three sisters, Inez L. Wilson and Dorothy L. Davis, both of Danville, and Nancy L. Irby of Gretna; one brother, Gene Ray Lewis of Alexandria, Va.
A funeral will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel with Elder Danny Parker officiating. Interment
will be in Highland Burial Park with military honors conducted by the American Legion Post No. 325.
The family will receive friends at the residence of Inez L. Wilson, his sister, at 532 Mount Hermon Circle.
Frank Rakoski
DANVILLE, Va. - Frank Joseph Rakoski, 73, of 3197 Finch Drive, died Thursday, Jan. 27, 2000, at his residence after several years of declining health.
Born April 1, 1926, in Scranton, Pa., she was the daughter of Leon Rakoski and Mary Hartman.
He was married
Oct. 16, 1971, to Elaine Hardy Rakoski, who survives.
He was a veteran of the United States Navy served during World War II. He resided in the Danville and Pittsylvania County area for 15 years. He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and was employed with Conrail Railroad as freight conductor, prior to his retirement.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include one daughter, Mary Rakoski of Kansas City, Mo.; four sons, Ray Rakoski of Blacksburg, Joe Rakoski of Mechanicsburg, Pa., Mike Rakoski and Dave Rakoski, both of New Jersey; two sisters, Clara Reese and Florence Bauer, both of Scranton, Pa.; and nine grandchildren.
A funeral will be 10 a.m. Monday at Wrenn Yeatts North Main Chapel with Fr. David McGuire officiating. Interment
will be in Highland Burial Park.
A vigil will be 7 p.m. Sunday with visitation to follow until 8 p.m. at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel. The family, at other times, will receive friends at the residence.
John Sherrill Sr.
PALMETTO, Fla. - John Walter Sherrill Sr., 74, died Jan. 24, 2000, at Bay Pines Veterans Administration Medical Center, Bay Pines.
He was born in Kannapolis, N.C.
He married
Billie June Sherill, who survives.
He was a veteran of the United States Army. He moved to Manatee County from Aberdeen, Md., in 1972, where he was employed as an auto mechanic. He was a member of the Jehovah’s Witnesses Kingdom Hall of Palmetto.
In addition to his wife of Palmetto, survivors include two daughters, Lola Denise Jamroz Pope of Palmetto and Cynthia Dianne Kelley of Palmetto; one son, John W. Sherrill Jr. of Bradenton; one sister, Wilmouth Rudolph of Augusta, Ga., two brothers, Russell Sherrill and Jerry Sherrill, both of Danville; five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be 6 p.m. Friday at Jehovah’s Witnesses Kingdom Hall, 1808 10th St., West, Palmetto.

Teresa Witcher
DANVILLE, Va. - Teresa Witcher, 42, of 1403 Myrtle Ave., died Wednesday, Jan. 26, 2000, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
She was born Sept. 25, 1957, in Texas.
Survivors include three daughters, Lelia Hughes, Christina M. Hughes and Marie E. Craft, all of Danville; one son, Dontae Witcher of Danville; one sister, Willie Mae Miller of Danville; and three grandchildren.

Elsie Adams
DANVILLE, Va. - Elsie Mazoria Adams, 93, of 1314 Washington St., died Wednesday, Jan. 26, 2000, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born March 15, 1902, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Joseph Adams and Ella Harris Adams.
She attended the Pittsylvania County public schools and was employed with the Virginia Tobacco Company for many years.
She was a faithful member of Mount Calvary Missionary Baptist Church until her decline in health.
Survivors include one son Frank Adams of Danville; one sister Beatrice Dowling of Philadelphia, Pa.; nine grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.
A funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at Mount Calvary Baptist Church with the Rev. Letcher L. Coleman officiating. Interment
will be in Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends at the residence.
