Virginia, U.S., Marriage Records, 1936-2014

Hubert Compton

CHATHAM, Va. - Hubert Marshall Compton, 69, of 201 Woodlawn Academy Road, died Thursday, Jan. 27, 2000, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born March 9, 1930, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of Thornton Compton and Blanch Booze Compton.
He married Lellia Ruth Keatts Compton, who predeceased him.
He was a member of Open Bible Baptist Church and a retired farmer.
Survivors include three daughters Ann C. Moser of Chatham, Linda C. Moore of Danville and Betty C. Walden of Climax; three sons Earl Compton of Chatham, James Compton of Danville and Dickie Lewis Compton of Nashville, Tenn.; four brothers Lewis Compton of Brookneal, Irvin Compton of Chatham, Buster Compton of South Boston and Walter Compton of Altavista; 15 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by one son, Wayne Compton.
A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at Open Bible Baptist Church with the Rev. Tim Kizer officiating. Burial will be in Church of God of Prophecy cemetery in Java.
The family will receive friends at the residence.
Scott Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Helen K. Giles

DANVILLE, Va. - Helen K. Giles, 80, of 307 Arnett Blvd., passed away Thursday evening, January 27, 2000, after a long struggle with cancer.
Mrs. Giles was born July 11, 1919, in Pittsylvania County, Virginia. She was the daughter of Johnson D. King and Willie Allen King.
She married Frank Davis Giles on April 2, 1942, and worked at the Norfolk Navy Hospital during World War II.
The Giles family returned to the Danville area after the war. Mrs. Giles was preceded in death by her beloved husband in 1993.
She is survived by her son, James Ryan Giles, a homebuilder in Greenville, S.C. and his wife, Robin Womack Giles, also formerly of Danville. She is also survived by her grandson, James Ryan Giles, Jr., a Bible School Student, living in Tampa, FL and her granddaughter Lauren Elizabeth Giles, a teacher in Greenville, S.C.
She is also survived by her son Tracy Allen Giles, an attorney, living and practicing law in Roanoke, Virginia and his wife Malissa Lambert Giles formerly of Hazelhurst, Mississippi and their infant daughter Helen Elizabeth Giles.
Helen Giles was a longtime member of Calvary United Methodist Church (now Saint Lukes United Methodist Church).
She was a member of the Wesley Sunday School Class and the Susanna Wesley Woman’s Circle, before joining Trinity United Methodist Church in 1988, with her husband.
Funeral services will be conducted Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m. from Trinity United Methodist Church by The Reverend R. Levi Stroud, Jr. with interment to follow in Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends at the Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel on Saturday night from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m.

Mamie Ingram

HALIFAX, Va. - Mamie H. Ingram, 94, of 1011 Cedar Fork Road, died Tuesday, Jan. 25, 2000, at The Woodview.
Born Nov. 20, 1905, in Halifax County, she was the daughter of Jim Henry Hall and Harriett Laine Hall.
She married Charlie Y. Hodnett and later to Arthur B. Ingram.
She was a member of the Union United Methodist Church.
Survivors include one daughter, Shirley Midkiff of Halifax; three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Union United Methodist Church cemetery with the Rev. Thomas R. Boggs and the Rev. Bob Watts officiating.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. at Powell Funeral Home and at other times at the residence of her daughter, 1011 Cedar Fork Road.

Ray Largen

LAUREL FORK, Va. - Ray Phillman Largen, 87, of Laurel Fork, died Friday, Jan. 27, 2000, at the Veterans Medical Center-Salem.
He married Winnie Mae Largen, who predeceased him.
Survivors include two daughters, Willadean Nester of Laurel Fork and Lula Mae Massey of Bassett; two sons, Teddy Ray Largen of Ridgeway and Michial James Largen of Danville; and two brothers, William Elden Largen of Wilmington, N.C., and Raymond E. Largen of Miami, Fla.; 10 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.
In addition to his wife, he was predeceased by a brother, Andrew Largen.
A funeral will be 1:30 p.m. Sunday at Vaughan-Guynn-McGrady Chapel with the Elder Carbon Vass officiating. Burial will be in Nester cemetery with military rites by Hillsville V.F.W. Post No. 1115 officiating.
The family will receive friends 6-7:30 p.m. Saturday at Vaughan-Guynn-McGrady Chapel.

Averett Lewis Jr.

DANVILLE, Va. - Averett Dodson Lewis Jr., 70, of 556 Mount Hermon Circle, died Thursday, Jan. 27, 2000, after one year of declining health.
Born Aug. 27, 1929, in Keeling, he was the son of Averett Dodson Lewis Sr. and Clericsa Smith Lewis.
He was a veteran of the United States Army who served during the Korean War.
He was a farmer and a member of the American Legion Post No. 325.
He lived his life in the Mount Hermon community of Pittsylvania County.
Survivors include three sisters, Inez L. Wilson and Dorothy L. Davis, both of Danville, and Nancy L. Irby of Gretna; one brother, Gene Ray Lewis of Alexandria.
A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel with Elder Danny Parker officiating. Interment icon will be in Highland Burial Park with military honors conducted by the American Legion Post No. 325.
The family will receive friends at the residence of Inez L. Wilson, his sister, at 532 Mount Hermon Circle.

James Newsome Sr.

DANVILLE, Va. - James Randolph Newsome Sr., age 89, of 256 Old Greensboro Rd., died at 9:09 a.m. at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Newsome was born June 23, 1910, in Randleman, North Carolina.
Newsome graduated from Seagrove High in Seagrove, N.C. and Danville Commerical School. He came to Danville in 1935, and has lived here since. He served in the United States Army in World War II in the European Theater. He was of the Methodist faith.
He owned and operated Jones Motor Court, Danville. He suffered a decline in health for the past six months.
He married Myrtle Underwood Newsome on December 10, 1941, who survives.
In addition to his wife, survivors include one son and daughter-in-law, James R. Newsome Jr. and Sandra Walker Newsome, both of Danville; one daughter and son-in-law, Phyllis McDowell and Gary David McDowell, both of Milton, N.C.; two sisters, Erma King of Asheboro, N.C., and Mary Holden of Randleman, N.C.; two granddaughters, Alesa McDowell Eanes and Sandy Carver.
He was predeceased by one son, Ronnie Lee Newsome Sr.; one grandson, Ronnie Lee Newsome Jr.; one sister, Sallie Andrews; and one brother, Amos Newsome.
A funeral will be 11:00 a.m. Saturday, January 29, 2000, at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Gilmer Setliff officiating. Burial will be in Mount View cemetery.
The family received friends 7-8:30 p.m. Friday, January 28, 2000, at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel and will recieve friends at other times at the residence.

Nancy Patterson

SOUTH BOSTON, Va. - Nancy Louise Patterson, 89, of 105 Wren St., died Thursday, Jan. 27, 2000, at Halifax Regional Hospital.
Born June 24, 1910, in South Boston, she was the daughter of Daniel Patterson and Nannie Beall Patterson.
She graduated from Averett College and worked for the Federation of Post Office Clerks in Washington, D.C.
She also worked for the Department of Atomic Energy in Brunswick, N.J. and Golden, Colo.
She was secretary to the Administrator at Halifax County Hospital and later retired as Head of Medical Records.
She was a member of Main Street United Methodist Church.
Survivors include one sister Geneva Patterson of Tuczon, Ariz.
A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Brooks Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Doug Martin officiating. Burial will be in Oak Ridge cemetery.
The family received friends 7-8 p.m. Friday at Brooks Funeral Home Chapel and at other times at the residence.

Arthur Phillips, Sr.

HALIFAX, Va. - Arthur Samuel Phillips Sr., 76, of 1084 East Oak Hill Drive, died Thursday, Jan. 27, 2000, at Veterans Administration Medical Center, Durham, N.C.
Born Feb. 16, 1921, in Halifax County, he was the son of William Henry Phillips and Jenny Thomas Phillips.
He married Bertha Elliott Phillips, who survives.
He was a veteran of the United States Army, serving during World War II.
He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.
He was owner/operator of Flying A Service Station until his retirement.
In addition to his wife of Halifax, survivors include one daughter Brenda P. Hunter of Albuquerque, N.M.; two sons Arthur S. Phillips, Jr. of Provo, Utah and William Henry “W.H.” Phillips of Halifax; 23 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by six brothers, one sister and two grandchildren.
A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Brooks Funeral Home Chapel with Brother Mac Bugg and President Robert Mayo officiating. Burial will be in Hitesburg Baptist Church cemetery, Virgilina.
The family received friends from 7-8:30 p.m. Friday at Brooks Funeral Home Chapel and at other times at the residence.

Frank Rakoski

DANVILLE, Va. - Frank Joseph Rakoski, 73, of 3197 Finch Drive, died Thursday, Jan. 27, 2000, at his residence after several years of declining health.
Born April 1, 1926, in Scranton, Pa., he was the son of Leon Rakoski and Mary Hartman.
He was married Oct. 16, 1971, to Elaine Hardy Rakoski, who survives.
He was a veteran of the United States Navy, having served during World War II.
He resided in the Danville and Pittsylvania County area for 15 years.
He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and was employed with Conrail Railroad as freight conductor, prior to his retirement.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include one daughter, Mary Rakoski of Kansas City, Mo.; four sons, Ray Rakoski of Blacksburg, Joe Rakoski of Mechanicsburg, Pa., Mike Rakoski and Dave Rakoski, both of New Jersey; two sisters, Clara Reese and Florence Bauer, both of Scranton, Pa.; and nine grandchildren.
A funeral will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel with Fr. David McGuire officiating. Interment icon will be in Highland Burial Park.
A vigil will be 7 p.m. Sunday with visitation to follow until 8 p.m. at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel. The family, at other times, will receive friends at the residence.
