Elbert Tapley Sr.
DANVILLE, Va. – Elbert Tapley, Sr., 86, of 1189 Piney Forest Road, died Wednesday, Jan. 26, 2000, in the Piney Forest Road area.
Born March 28, 1913, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of William Tapley and Margaret Tapley.
He married
Thelma Tapley, who predeceased him.
He was a laborer for Dan River Inc.
Survivors include two sons Elbert Tapley, Jr. and Joseph L. Tapley, both of Dry Fork; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
A viewing will be 4-8 p.m. Saturday at Cunningham & Hughes Funeral Home.
A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at Oak Grove Baptist Church with the Rev. Ralph B. Cypress officiating. Interment
will follow in Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends at 264 Waller Lane, Dry Fork.
Richard Arey
CHATHAM, Va. - Richard Walton Arey, 80, of 42 Franklin Place, died Saturday, Jan. 29, 2000, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born July 18, 1918, in Independence, Kan., he was a son of Guy Walton Arey and Ruth Yoe Arey.
He was married
to Patricia Kane Arey, who predeceased him. He was a member of Emmanuel Episcopal Church. He was a retired U.S. Naval Commander, serving in WWII and the Korean War. He received a Navy Commendation with a Bronze V. He was the first executive secretary for the Virginia State Air Pollution Control Board.
Survivors include one daughter, Kathleen A. Carroll of Houston; three sons, Stephen E. Arey of Tazewell, Patrick K. Arey of Severna Park, Md., and Alan L. Arey of Roanoke, and seven grandchildren.

Estelle Carter
DANVILLE, Va. - Estelle Carter, 89, of 834 Corcoran St. died Saturday, Jan. 22, 2000, at the Gretna Health Care Center.
Born Oct. 4, 1910, in Halifax County, she was the daughter of Arthur Irby and Cynthia Chapel Irby.
She was married
to Ashley Carter Sr., who predeceased her.
Survivors include one daughter, Juanita Belle of Las Vegas; one son, Ashley Carter of Danville; seven grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren, and 11 great great grandchildren.
A funeral will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Cherrystone Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. Floyd Jones officiating. Interment
will follow in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the residence.

Mary Deloris Johnson
DANVILLE, Va. - Mary Deloris Johnson, 45, of 731 Memorial Drive, Apt. 2, died Thursday, Jan. 27, 2000 at her residence.
Born February 4, 1954, in Danville, she was the daughter of Joseph Jackson who survives, and Edith Jackson.
She was married
to Ronnie Johnson, who survives. She worked for Roman Eagle Nursing Home. In addition to her husband and father, survivors include four brothers, Ronnie “Pop” Hamlett, Joseph J. Jackson Jr., and James Jackson, all of Danville, and Joseph L. Jackson of Mebane, N.C.; and three sisters, Jewel Gwynn of Yanceyville, N.C., Jean Jackson of Danville, and Sandra Holloway of Greensboro, N.C.
A funeral will be 1 p.m. Tuesday at Cunningham and Hughes Memorial Chapel. Interment
will follow in Oak Hill cemetery.
Viewing will be from 4-6 p.m. Sunday at Cunningham and Hughes Funeral Home.
The family will receive friends at the residence of her sister, Jean Jackson, 641 Shelton Street.
Joyce Lewis
DANVILLE, Va. - Joyce Evans Lewis, 43, of 65 Ashlawn Drive, died Wednesday, Jan. 26, 2000, at her residence of several years of declining health.
Born June 14, 1956, in Danville, she was the daughter of the late Nathan D. Evans and Ollie Land Evans, who survives.
She married
Julian C. Lewis, Jr., who also survives.
She spent most of her life in Danville where she was a homemaker and of the Baptist faith.
In addition to her mother of Yanceyville, N.C. and her husband of the residence, survivors include one daughter Kathy R. Lewis of Danville; two sons Jason C. Lewis of the United States Navy, stationed in Le More, Calif., and Charles J. Lewis of Danville; one brother Elmer Evans of Providence, N.C.; five sisters Judy Talbott, Barbara Lynsky, Darlene Myers and Tammy Bates, all of Pelham, N.C. and Peggy Maxie of the Gatewood Community; and two grandchildren.
Graveside services were held 2 p.m. Saturday at Schoolfield cemetery with the Rev. Hubert Evans officiating.
The family will receive friends at the residence.

Samuel Robinson
DANVILLE, Va. - Samuel Robinson, 93, of Piney Forest Nursing Home, died Friday, January 28, 2000, at his residence.
Born April 10, 1906, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of Taz Robinson and Jane Robinson.
He was married
to Viola Bennett Robinson, who predeceased him.
He was self-employed as a farmer.
Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Monday at Cunningham & Hughes Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Ralph Cypress officiating. Interment
will follow in Crooktown cemetery.
A viewing will be held 4 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home. The family will receive friends at the residence of his great-great-niece, Gloria Crews, 166 Andes Drive.
Albron Cadogan Jr.
CHATHAM, Va. - Albron A. Cadogan Jr., 75, of 636 Lester Rd., died Thursday, Jan. 27, 2000, at Halifax Regional Hospital in South Boston.
Born Jan. 25, 1925, in Philadelphia, he was the son of Albron Cadogan Sr. and Margaret Settlers Cadogan.
He was married
to Linda Cadogan. Prior to his retirement, he was employed as a carpenter at Children’s Hospital in Philadelphia. He was a member of Highland Heights Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses in Danville, and was a veteran of World War II.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include seven sons, Russell Cadogan of Upper Darby, Pa., Jermaine Cadogan of Jacksonville, N.C., Kenneth Cadogan, Anthony Cadogan, Tyrone Cadogan, Brandon Cadogan and Shawn Cadogan, all of Chatham; six daughters, Vivian McLaughlin, Audrey Brannan, and Valerie Cadogan, all of Philadelphia; Melinda Cadogan, Stephanie Cadogan, and Elizabeth Cadogan, all of Chatham; one step-son, Sterling Mitchell of Philadelphia; and three sisters, Edith Cadogan, Mary Riviera, and Fannie Lomax, all of Philadelphia.
A funeral will be 1 p.m. Tuesday at the Miller Funeral Home Chapel in Gretna with the Elder Joseph Gravely officiating.
Otis Dishman
DANVILLE, Va. - William Otis Dishman, 80, of 2948 North Main St., died Friday, January 28, 2000, at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Salem after one year of declining health and 12 days in the hospital.
Born Oct. 20, 1919, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of Henry Smith Dishman and Berta Eanes Dishman.
He was married
Oct. 25, 1946 to Jettie Coleman Dishman, who survives.
He was a member of Grace Design Untied Methodist Church. He served as a former Sunday school teacher, as Chairman of the administrative board and as a member of the choir.
He was a member of the American Legion Post No. 325. He retired in 1981 from Dan River Inc. where he worked as a counter clerk, No. 1 store.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include four brothers, H.S. “Buck” Dishman, Cecil E. Dishman and M. Russell Dishman, all of Danville, and J. Howard Dishman of Hampton; and one sister, Myrtle Hardy of Newport News.
He was predeceased by two brothers, Henry K. Dishman and Wesley Dishman; and two sisters, Virginia D. Hedrick and Aileen D. Inman.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel with the Rev. Scott Holcomb-McLain officiating. Interment
will be at Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends 7 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel, and at other times at the residence.
Helen Giles
DANVILLE, Va. - Helen K. Giles, 80, of 307 Arnett Blvd., died Thursday Jan. 27, 2000, after several years of declining health.
Born July 11, 1919, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Johnson D. King and Willie Allen King.
She was married
to Frank Davis Giles on April 2, 1942, who predeceased her in 1993. She worked at the Norfolk Navy Hospital during World War II, and was a long time member of Calvary United Methodist Church. She was a member of the Wesley Sunday School Class and the Susanna Wesley Woman’s Circle. She later joined Trinity United Methodist Church.
Survivors include two sons, James Ryan Giles, of Greenville, S.C., and Tracy Allen Giles of Roanoke, and three grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted Monday afternoon at 2 p.m. at Trinity United Methodist Church with the Rev. R. Levi Stroud Jr. officiating. Interment
will follow in Highland Burial Park.
The family received friends from 7-8:30 p.m. Saturday at the Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel.
Tinsey Hamm
DANVILLE, Va. - Tinsey Helen Hamm, 63, of 534 Madison St., died Thursday, Jan. 27, 2000, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born March 4, 1936, in Danville, she was the daughter of William Tanner and Bessie Tanner.
She was married
to Clyde Hamm, who predeceased her.
She worked as a secretary for the University of Optometry in New York for many years.
Survivors include one daughter, Stephanie Oliver Gillis of Danville; two sons, Rickie Oliver of Boise, Idaho and Christopher Oliver of Bronx, N.Y.; three sisters, Mary Thomas of Bronx, N.Y., Odaris Cauthen of Greensboro, N.C., and Delores Warren of California; one brother, Jessie Tanner of Bronx, N.Y., and one granddaughter.
A funeral will be 1 p.m. Tuesday at Mt. Olive Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. James Walker officiating. Interment
will follow in Danville Memorial Gardens.

Annie Slayton
DANVILLE, Va. - Annie Lou Roberts Slayton, 95, of 115 Summit Road, died Thursday, Jan. 27, 2000, at Stratford Health Care Center after several months of declining health.
Born Dec. 15, 1904, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Jacob B. Roberts and Eliza Barker Roberts.
She was married
Jan. 12, 1924, to Otis Dillard “Dip” Slayton, who predeceased her May 4, 1976.
She resided in the Laurel Grove community most of her life before moving to Danville in 1976. She was a member of the Laurel Grove Baptist Church.
Survivors include three daughters Irma S. Culver of Tampa, Fla., Joy S. Camp of Huntsville, Ala. and Linda S. Walker of Danville; two sisters Jessie R. Walton of Danville and Helen R. Oakes of Columbia, S.C.; six grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
A funeral will be held at 4 p.m. Monday at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel with the Rev. Christopher Greggs, the Rev. Kyle Flora and Lester Tate officiating. Interment
will be in Highland Burial Park.
