SOUTH BOSTON, Va. - Florence Weatherford Slayton, 51, of 2086 Sandy Beach Rd., died Sunday, Jan. 30, 2000, at Halifax Regional Hospital.
Born Sept. 22, 1948, she was the daughter of James Weatherford and Lelia Barksdale Weatherford.
She was married
to Lynwood Wayne Slayton. She was a homemaker and a member of Asbury United Methodist Church.
In addition to her parents and husband of South Boston, survivors include three daughters, Crystal Slayton, Cynthia White, and Candace Slayton, all of South Boston; two sisters, Gracie Poole of Cluster Springs and Ruby Rickman of South Boston; two brothers, Donald Weatherford of South Boston and Timothy Weatherford of Clarksville, and two grandchildren.
A funeral will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Brooks Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Herman Absher officiating. Interment
will be in the Slayton Family cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 Monday at Brooks Funeral Home and other times at the residence.
Lucy Walker
PENHOOK, Va. - Lucy R. Walker, 76, died Sunday, Jan. 30, 2000.
She was a daughter of Lewis Robertson and Cora Robertson.
She was married
to Emmitt Walker, who predeceased her. She was a member of Forrest Hill Christian Church.
In addition to her mother, survivors include five children: Emmitt Walker Jr., Sherry Walker, and Donnie Walker, of Penhook; Peggy Potter of Martinsville; and Robin Bowers of Rocky Mount; five siblings, John Henry Robertson of Martinsville, Roger Robertson of Rocky Mount, Catherine Martin, Edward Robertson, and Shirley Robertson of Penhook; eight grandchildren, and three great grandchildren.
A funeral will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Forrest Hill Christian Church with the Rev. Ted R. Clifton officiating. Interment
will follow in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 p.m. Monday at Forrest Hill Christian Church.

Raymond Crowder
DANVILLE, Va. - Raymond Archie Crowder, 68, of 176 Sunset Drive, died Monday, Jan. 31, 2000, at Danville Regional Medical Center after one month of declining health.
Born Jan. 15, 1932, in Danville, he was a son of James Leonard Crowder and Texas Roach Crowder, who survives.
He was married
to Mary Phelps Crowder, who survives. He had spent most of his life in Danville. He was employed by the city of Danville, and at the time of his retirement was supervisor of meter readers. He was of the Baptist faith. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War.
In addition to his wife and mother, survivors include one daughter, Rae Anne Crowder of Chatham; one brother, Curtis Crowder of Danville, and one sister, Hazel C. King of Yorktown.
A funeral will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel with the Rev. Lee Ellison officiating. Interment
will be in Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends from 7-8 p.m. Tuesday at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel, and other times at the residence.
Catherine Crumpton
DANVILLE, Va. - Catherine Lee Lunsford Crumpton, 74, died Sunday, Jan. 30, 2000, at Roman Eagle Memorial Home after several months of declining health.
Born May 11, 1925, in Caswell County, N.C., she was a daughter of John Wilbur Lunsford and Kattie Whitler Lunsford. She was married
to Joseph Lillard Crumpton, who predeceased her.
She was employed by Dan River Mills Inc. for 30 years prior to her retirement due to disability. She was a homemaker and a lifetime member of Pleasent Grove Presbyterian Church.
Survivors include two daughters, Jo Ann C. Leonard and Katie C. Stevenson, both of Danville; one son, Danny Lee Crumpton of Semora, N.C.; two sisters, Lena Mae Agee of Burlington, N.C., and Gladys Pearl Donevan of Yanceyville, N.C.; five grandchildren and four great grandchildren.
In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by a son, Freddie Arnold Crumpton.
A funeral will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Pleasant Grove Presbyterian Church with the Revs. Albert Moser and Daryl Joyce officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 p.m. Tuesday at the church.

Orrin Holland
DANVILLE, Va. - Orrin Kimper Holland, 81, of 333 Wrenn Drive died Sunday, Jan. 30, 2000, at Blue Ridge Rehab Center in Martinsville where he had been a resident for one and a half years. He had been in declining health for a number of years.
Born April 30, 1918, in the Vance Community of Pittsylvania County, he was a son of Steven Arthur Holland Sr. and Lelia Green Holland.
He was married
to Isola A. “Skippy” Skipper Holland on March 4, 1966, who survives.
He lived his life in the Danville and Pittsylvania County area. He was a builder, and then was employed in the No. 5 shop at Dan River Inc. prior to his retirement. He was a member of North Main Baptist Church and had served as a deacon. He also served in the U.S. Army Air Corp during World War II.
He was predeceased by two brothers, Charles L. Holland and Steven Arthur Holland Jr., and one sister, Hilda Whichard.
A funeral will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at North Main Baptist Church with the Dr. Eddie Davis and the Rev. Kyle Flora officiating. A private interment will be at Highland Burial Park. The family will receive friends at the residence.

Emmett “Roy” Shannon
ATLANTIC, Va. - Emmett L. “Roy” Shannon, 91, of Atlantic, and formerly of Danville, died Saturday, Jan. 29, 2000, at Arcardia Nursing Center.
He was the son of Frank Parsons Shannon and Ida Vaughan Shannon.
He was married
to Vienna Thompson Shannon, who predeceased him. He was a retired firefighter for the U.S. Navy.
Survivors include two sons, Frank Shannon of New Church, and Robert Shannon of Walnut Creek, Calif., and one sister, Doris S. Bercaw of Charleston, S.C.

Sylvilean Morrison
DANVILLE, Va. - Sylvilean Morrison, 46, of 600 Main St., died Sunday, Jan. 30, 2000, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Nov. 24, 1953, in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of Ulyesse Morrison and Novie Marie Wilkerson Morrison.
Survivors include three sisters, Dorothy Regina Fitzgerald of Danville, Carrie Calloway of Chatham, and Mae Dixon of Natalie, and one brother, Joseph Dale Morrison of Danville.
A funeral will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Riceville Baptist Church with the Rev. Ronnie Walker officiating. Interment
will follow in the church cemetery.

Johnnie Pritchett
CHATHAM, Va. - Johnnie Lee Pritchett, 61, of 4544 Spring Garden Road, died Monday, Jan. 31, 2000, at his residence after one year of declining health.
Born Aug. 22, 1938, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of Willie Pritchett and Georgia Gosney Pritchett.
He was married
to Dorothy Ann Cole Pritchett, who survives. He had lived in Manassas for 30 years prior to moving to the Spring Garden Community of Pittsylvania County. He owned and operated J & J Carpet until his retirement due to health reasons. He was a very active member of the Spring Garden Community Church, and was a member of American Legion Post 325. He also served in the U.S. Army.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include two sons, Johnnie Lee Pritchett II and Michael Lee Pritchett, both of Danville; two daughters, Michelle P. Al-Sayeh of Carey, N.C., and Renee P. Hankins of Danville; one brother, James Pritchett of Chatham; four sisters, Netra P. Towler of Dry Fork, Martha P. Cox of Chatham, Docia P. Pillow and Audrey P. Tuck, both of Pittsville; two grandchildren and five step grandchildren.
A funeral will be 1 p.m Wednesday at Spring Garden Community Church with the Rev. Dr. R.J. Barber Jr. officiating. Interment
will follow in the church cemetery with military honors by American Legion Post 325.
The family received friends from 7-8 p.m. Tuesday at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel and will receive friends at other times at the residence.
Virginia Scearce
SUFFOLK, Va. - Virginia Haymore Scearce, 85, of 7137 South Quay Road, died Sunday, Jan. 30, 2000, at Louise Obici Memorial Hospital.
Born in Callands, she was the daughter of John Haymore and Lettie Frances Evans Haymore.
She retired from Dan River Inc., and was a member of Fellowship Baptist Church.
Survivors include one daughter, Carolyn S. Megginson of Suffolk; two sisters, Pearl H. Hicks and Cora H. Underwood, both of Danville; two grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
A funeral will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Sidney F. Harrell Funeral Home with the Pastor Bob Davis and Rev. Byron McCreary officiating. Interment
will be at Olive Branch cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the residence.

Chester Stamps
DANVILLE, Va. - Chester Stamps, 88, of 525 Newton St., died Tuesday, Feb. 1, 2000, at his residence.
Born Sept. 14, 1911, in Milton, N.C., he was a son of Paul Stamps and Rosa Stephens Stamps.
He was employed at Dan River Inc., for 15 years prior to his retirement. He was also employed at Peebles Department store for many years, and was a lifelong member of Loyal Baptist Church where he served on the Deacon Board. He also served as the superintendent of the Sunday school, director of the Baptist Training Union and many other committees in the church, as well as the community. He was a member of American Legion Post 29. He was a decorated veteran of the U.S. Army where he achieved the rank of TEC 5 during WWII. His tour of duty included campaigns in Germany, France and Belgium. He received the Good Conduct Medal, American Theater Ribbon, European African Middle Eastern Theater Ribbon and the WWII Victory Ribbon.
He was predeceased by two sisters and 10 brothers. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family.
The family will receive friends at the home of his niece, Patricia Stamps, 213 Moffett St.

James ‘Phil’ Tipton, Sr.
WAYNESBORO, Va. - James Phillips ‘Phil’ Tipton, Sr., 72, of 1117 15th Street, Waynesboro, died Tuesday, February 1, at his home.
He was born October 12, 1927 in Elizabethton, TN a son of Albert Carter, Sr. and Nannette Thomas Phillips Tipton.
Mr. Tipton was a graduate of Elizabethton Schools, East Tennessee State, and Virginia Tech. During WWII he served with the US Navy. After 40 years of service he retired from General Electric, Waynesboro and Charlottesville, where he had been an Electrical Design Engineer and Engineer Instructor. He served as a Deacon and Elder of First Presbyterian Church, Waynesboro, having been asked to craft the wooden cross that hangs in the church’s sanctuary; was active with the Boy Scouts of America as an Institutional Representative for Tropp 44 and former vice-chairman of the Stonewall Jackson Area Council; was a frequent blood donor for the Red Cross; and was a volunteer at Augusta Medical Center, Augusta County and Waynesboro libraries, and at summit Square, with his dog, Murphy.
Surviving are his wife, Joyce Miller Tipton, of Waynesboro; three daughters and sons-in-law, Nell & Wendell Smith of Lexington, VA, Lee & Tim Read of Charlottesville, VA, and Beth & Scott McDevitt of Waynesboro; a son and his wife, James P. “Zo” II & Jennifer Tipton of Waynesboro; a sister, Nannette T. Divine of Elizabethton, TN; a brother, Albert C. Tipton Jr. of Oklahoma City; 10 grandchildren, Kaitlin & Zev Smith, Katie, James, & Leighton Read, Emily, Grace, Michael & Scout McDevitt, and Veronica Tipton; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents he is preceded in death by a grandson, Jacob Smith.
A memorial service will be conducted at 2:00 P.M. Thursday at First Presbyterian Church by Revs. Lynn & Albert Connette and Rev. Jim Black.
The family will receive friends from 7:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. Wednesday at McDow Funeral Home, Waynesboro.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Memorial Education Fund at First Presbyterian Church, Waynesboro.
