Mary Moore
DANVILLE, Va. - Mary Elizabeth Moore, 88, formerly of Yonkers, N.Y., died Tuesday, Feb. 1, 2000.
Born Feb. 24, 1911, in Lewiston, N.C., she was a daughter of John and Sally Darden.
She was married
to Rack I. Moore, who predeceased her. She attended the public schools of North Carolina. She was an active community member and member of Mount Carmel Baptist Church in Yonkers, N.Y., since 1939.
Survivors include one daughter, Carlease Lee Price of Danville; foster child, Pamela Smith Hamon; one sister, Lena Glover, and many grandchildren.
A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Mount Carmel Baptist Church in Yonkers. Interment
will follow at Mount Hope cemetery.
A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday at White Rock Baptist Church. Cunningham and Hodges Funeral are in charge of arrangements.
Willard Murphy
DRY FORK, Va. - Willard Taft Murphy, 90, of 1364 Dry Fork Road, died Thursday, Feb. 3, 2000, at the Roman Eagle Memorial Home.
He was born Aug. 31, 1909, in Pittsylvania County.
He was married
to Wilmoth Oakes Murphy, who survives. He was a member of Oakland United Methodist Church.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include one daughter, Betty Wyatt of Ringgold; one sister, Lucy Fowlkes of Chatham; one brother, Carroll Murphy of Danville; six grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.
A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at Oakland United Methodist Church with the Rev. Steve Lewis and the Rev. R. Fletcher Hardy III officiating.
Interment will be in the Chatham Burial Park.
The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 p.m. Saturday at Scott Funeral Home and other times at the residence.
Cecil Riddle
CHATHAM, Va. - Cecil Berton Riddle, 73, of 18 Aston Place, died Friday, Feb. 4, 2000, at the Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Feb. 5, 1926, in Zion, Ill., he was a son of Hershal Riddle and Elizabeth Garris Riddle.
He was married
to Christine Grooms Riddle, who survives. He was a member of Chatham Baptist Church.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include one daughter, Patricia Ann Wyatt of Sallsbury, N.C.; four stepdaughters, Nancy James and Vicki Adras, both of Las Vegas, Bobbi Bell of Ashboro, N.C., and Cathy Dillard of Atlanta; 12 grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at Scott Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Michael Macon officiating. Interment
will be in Hillcrest Burial Park.
The family will receive friends from 7-8 p.m. Sunday at Scott Funeral Home and other times at the residence.
Chester Stamps
DANVILLE, Va. - Chester Stamps, 88, of 525 Newton St., died Tuesday, Feb. 1, 2000, at his residence.
Born Sept. 14, 1911, in Milton, N.C., he was a son of Paul Stamps and Rosa Stephens Stamps.
He was employed at Dan River Inc., for 15 years prior to his retirement.
He was also employed at Peebles Department store for many years, and was a lifelong member of Loyal Baptist Church where he served on the Deacon Board.
He also served as the superintendent of the Sunday school, director of the Baptist Training Union and many other committes in the church, as well as the community.
He was a member of American Legion Post 29.
He was a decorated veteran of the U.S. Army where he achieved the rank of TEC 5 during WWII.
His tour of duty included campaigns in Germany, France and Belgium. He received the Good Conduct Medal, American Theater Ribbon, European African Middle Eastern Theater Ribbon and the WWII Victory Ribbon.
He was predeceased by two sisters and 10 brothers.
He was the last surviving member of his immediate family.
The family will reecive friends at the home of his niece, Patricia Stamps, 213 Moffett St.
A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at Loyal Baptist Church with the Rev. Garnett Johnson officiating.
Interment will follow in Danville Memorail Gardens with military rites performed by American Legion Post 29.

Rozier Lee Thornton
CHESTER, Va. - Rozier Lee Thornton, 79, of Chester, and a native of Pittsylvania County, passed away Wednesday, February 2, 2000. He was a retired Major in the United States Army.
He served our country in the defense of the Panama Canal as a member of the 501st Army Battalion; in World War II as a member of the 74th Anti-aircraft Artillery, the 691st AAA Airborne Battery, and the 107 AAA Group.
He earned the Bronze Star Medal for meritorious achievment in ground operations against the enemy in Korea from June 4, 1951 to July 6, 1952.
He was also retired from Bellwood’s Defense General Supply Center after 19 years in Procurement, retiring in August of 1979.
He was an active member of St. John’s Episcopal Church in Chester for 30 years.
He was an active and loyal member of the Republican Party of Virginia and served as a delegate to the National Convention in 1988.
He was voted to the Republican National Hall of Honor in August 1992.
He received the Congressional Certificate of Merit in April 1992 for constantly supporting our cherished American ideals of freedom, economic opportunity and national strength.
He was a member of the Master Masons of Chester Lodge #0094, the ACCA Temple of Richmond, the Scottish Rite of Freemasonry, the Republican National Committee and National Republican Senatorial Committee.
He graduated from Schoolfield High School in 1939 and received his Bachelor’s of Science from the University of Maryland in 1960.
He is survived by his loving wife, Doris J. Thornton; two daughters, Patricia A. Thornton and Margaret T. Bozard; one sister, Lois Shorter; and five grandchildren.
He was predeceased by his son, Rozier L. Thornton, Jr. The family received friends at J.T. Morriss & Son Funeral Home, 3050 West Hundred Road, Chester on Friday, February 4, from 7 to 9 p.m.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, Feb. 5, at 11 a.m. in St. John’s Episcopal Church, 12201 Richmond Street, Chester.
Interment will be in Sunset Memorial Park.

Blanton Turner
PITTSVILLE, Va. - Blanton Turner, 79, of 6938 Toshes Road, died Thursday, Feb. 3, 2000, at his residence.
Born July 12, 1920, in Stokes County, N.C., he was a son of General Grant Turner and Mollie Edwards Turner.
He was married
to Ida Bell Turner of Rocky Mount, who survives.
He was last employed as a supervisor for the town of Gibsonville, N.C., and was a member of Cherrystone Baptist Church.
In addition to his wife, survivors include one daughter, Mae Bell Webb of Pittsville; six sisters, Fedret Julian of Bowie, Md., Alpha Hodge, Lencie Simon, and Arthma Balding, all of Martinsville, Almeda Gentry of Lynchburg, and Maude Covington of Pittsville; seven grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
He was predeceased by a son, Leonard Turner; three brothers, Spencer, Joe Lee and Carvelt Turner; and two sisters, Elsie Hawkins and Eleanor Madison.
A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at Cherrystone Baptist Church with the Rev. Floyd Jones officiating. Interment
will be in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 7-8 p.m. Saturday at Miller Funeral Home, and other times at the residence.
Jessie Roberts Walton
DANVILLE, Va. - Jessie Roberts Walton, age 85, of 392 Stony Mill School Road died Thursday, February 03, 2000 at the Danville Regional Medical Center.
She was born February 20, 1914 in Pittsylvania County a daughter of Jacob B. Roberts and the former Eliza Barker and had lived her entire life in the Stony Mill Community. She was a homemaker.
Mrs. Walton was a member of the Sharon Baptist Church, where she had taught Sunday School for over 30 years, was a member of the choir and a member of the Women’s Missionary Union.
She was a charter member and past matron of the Roberts-Bennett Chapter #70 of the Order of the Eastern Star.
On March 14, 1936 she was married
to J. Howard Walton who survives.
Survivors in addition to her husband, of the residence, include two daughters and sons-in-law, Wanda W. and James Farrar, Winston-Salem, NC and Judy W. and Bill Mangum, Danville; a sister, Helen R. Oakes, Columbia, SC; six grandchildren, Jill F. Parnell, Pinnacle, NC, Jimmy L. Farrar, Winston-Salem, NC, Billy Mangum, Watertown, TN, Connie M. Sowers, Becky M. Corbin and Linda M. Thompson, all of Danville and eight great Grandchildren.
Mrs. Walton was predeceased by five brothers and two sisters; Howard L. Roberts, Lester Roberts, W.D. Roberts, J.W. Roberts, J.F. Roberts, Irene R. Morris and Annie R. Slayton.
Funeral services will be conducted on Saturday, February 5, 2000 at 2:00 P.M. from the Wrenn-Yeatts, Westover Chapel by the Reverend Allen Holder and the Reverend Billy Robertson.
Interment will follow in Danville Memorial Gardens.
The family received friends Friday, February 4, 2000 from 7:00 - 8:30 P.M. at the Wrenn-Yeatts, Westover Chapel and will receive friends at other times will be at the residence, 392 Stony Mill School Road.
James Lovelace Jr.
DANVILLE, Va. - James W. Lovelace Jr., (“J.B.”), 40, of 139 Melbourne Circle died Wednesday, Feb. 2, 2000, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born June 19, 1959, he was the son of Elsie and James W. Lovelace Sr.
He joined the Jones Chapel Missionary Baptist Church early in his life where he attended Sunday school and was a member of the gospel ensemble choir. He graduated from the Danville School System and later graduated from St. Paul’s College in Lawrenceville. He was employed by the Danville School System before his health declined. He was an active member of the Blue Ridge M.S. Society, the Piedmont M.S. Society, and the Blind Bowlers Society.
Survivors include three sisters, Cynthia Richardson, Joyce Lovelace and Veronica Minter, all of Danville; one brother, Martin Petty of Danville, and a grandmother, Nancy Shaw, also of Danville.
A funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Monday at Jones Chapel Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. Hayes A. McConnell officiating. Interment
will be in Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends from 4-8 p.m. Sunday at Beavers Funeral Home Chapel and other times at the residence.
Frank Medley
SCOTTSBURG, Va. - Frank Smith Medley, 49, of 1103 Green Level Road, died Wednesday, Feb. 2, 2000, at Halifax Regional Hospital in South Boston.
Born Nov. 2, 1950 in Halifax County, he was the son of Alice Watkins, who survives.
In addition to his mother of Scottsburg, survivors include a daughter, Patrice Medley of Capitol Heights, Md.; a son, Kenric Medley of Temple Hills, Md.; two sisters, Shirley Hill of Stafford and Edna Jennings of Scottsburg; a brother, Ray Watkins of Roanoke and four grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at St. James Baptist Church with the Revs. Byrd Blackwell and Ronald Claiborne officiating. Interment
will follow in the church cemetery.
There will be a viewing immediately after morning worship services.
The family will receive friends at the residence, 1103 Green Level Road.
