EDEN, N.C. - Amos Cassell, 79, of 311 Johnsie Billie Harris St., died Monday, Dec. 2, 2002, at his home.
Born in Critz, Va., he was the son of William and Roxie Campbell Cassell.
He was a World War II veteran and a member of DAV. He was a retired electrician from Meginn Electric.
In addition to his wife, Joan Kerr Cassell, of the home, he is survived by two sons, Daniel Cassell of Salisbury and Bill Connell of Matthews; four daughters, Jo Anne Garrett of Concord, Pamela Hudson of Danville, Va., Lisa Fisher of Eden, and Glenda "Penny" Revels of Concord; one brother, J.D. Cassell; 13 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, he is predeceased by seven brothers, Roy Cassell, Lemly Cassell, Carter Cassell, Willy Cassell, Otis Cassell, Harley Cassell and Tommy Cassell; and three sisters, Mary Clifton, Annie Doss and Lilly Cassell.
The funeral will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday at Fair Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will follow in Old Center Church Cemetery in Sandville, Va.
Visitation was 7-9 p.m. Tuesday at Fair Funeral Home. At other times the family will be at the residence.

Mary Vaden Coles
JAVA, Va. - Mary Vaden Coles, 87, died Monday, Dec. 2, 2002, at Stratford Health Care Center in Danville.
She was the daughter of Giles Henry Vaden and Mary Booth Vaden.
She was married to William P. Coles Jr., who predeceased her.
She was a member of Emanuel Episcopal Church.
She is survived by three daughters, Elizabeth "Lisa" Coles Geyer, Mary Patton Coles Meadows, both of Java and Constance Whitehead of Tucson, Ariz.; a son, John Hurt Whitehead III of Urbanna; two brothers, Edwin B. Vaden of Charlottesville and William C. Vaden of Hamilton, Ga.; nine grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Friday at Emanuel Episcopal Church with the Rev. Dr. John S. Ruef officiating. Interment will be in Chatham Burial Park.

Robert Henry Foust
DANVILLE, Va. - Robert Henry Foust, 87, of 802 Mount Cross Road, died Monday, Dec. 2, 2002, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born June 20, 1915, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of John Foust and Callie Pritchett Foust.
He was a veteran of World War II. He was employed as a security guard for K9 Corp and was of the Baptist faith.
He was married to Paula Ingram Foust.
In addition to his wife of Danville, he is survived by a stepson, Terrell Ingram of Danville.

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Mary L. Jones, of 721-33rd St., died Tuesday, Nov. 26, 2002, at her residence.
Born May 13, 1932, in Caswell County, she was the daughter of Marshall Jones and Alice Graves Jones.
She was a member of New Ephesus Baptist Church in Ruffin, N.C., the NAACP and the Voter's League in Newport News. She was employed with the VA Hospital before retirement.
She was the last survivor of her immediate generation.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Thursday at New Ephesus Baptist Church in Ruffin, N.C. with the Rev. William Lee officiating. Interment will be in the church cemetery.

Aubrey Kent Lindsey
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Mr. Aubrey Kent Lindsey, 81, passed away on Monday, Dec. 2, 2002, at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home in Winston-Salem, surrounded by family and friends.
He was born March 29, 1921, in Pittsylvania County, a son of A.C. and Myrtle Shelton Lindsey. Mr. Lindsey was of the Baptist faith. He was associated with the Scottish Rite of Freemasonry in Danville, Va. and was a Master Mason at the Kent Lodge #305 in Ringgold, Va. A veteran of the U.S. Navy, he served in the Pacific during World War II and retired from the ITT Grinnell Company after 36 years of dedicated service.
Mr. Lindsey was preceded in death by his children, Bobby L. Lindsey, Jane L. Pond and Donald Ray Lindsey; brother, Billie Franklin Lindsey and sister, Marion Jewel Lindsey.
He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Jessie McCormick Lindsey; brother, Berkley Lindsey; sisters, Lorena Adams and Ruth L. Cox, all of Danville, Va.; two grandsons, Lindsey A. Pond and L. Kent Pond of Chester, Va.; two granddaughters, Sara L. Butcher of Kernersville and Amanda E. Park of Richmond, Va.
The funeral service will be from the graveside at 11 a.m. Friday, December 6 at Highland Burial Park, Danville, Va., with the Rev. Carl Burger officiating. Masonic Rites will be given by Kent Lodge #305.
The family will receive friends Thursday evening, Dec. 5, from 7-8:30 p.m. at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel in Danville, Va.

Raymond Wilbur 'Tuny' Mathes
DANVILLE, Va. - Raymond Wilbur "Tuny" Mathes, 78, of 448 Bowe St., died Tuesday, Dec. 3, 2002, at 8:25 a.m., at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born May 9, 1924, in Danville, he was the son of James Eugene Mathes and Emma Webb Mathes, both of whom predeceased him.
He was a member of Longview Friends Church where he was Sunday school teacher, Sunday school superintendent, member of the church council, a trustee and a musician. He was a member of Fieldcresters Gospel Quartet for several years and was a member of Tuny & The Twilighters. He was also a member of the Tightsqueeze Philharmonic. He enjoyed playing the guitar very much. His greatest joy was playing in church. He served in the U.S. Air Force during peacetime. He had worked as an Insurance Underwriter for American General Insurance Company.
He married Virginia Davis Mathes on Jan. 9, 1952.
He is survived by three sons, Raymond Maurice Mathes of Danville, Duane C. Mathes and his wife, Pamela Mathes, of Montana and Lloyd T. Anderson and his wife, Ruth H. Anderson, of Lynchburg; a daughter, Bonita M. Hines and her husband, Alan R. Hines, of Danville; a brother, William W. Mathes of Sacramento, Calif.; two sisters, Becky M. Dalton of Danville and Sarah M. Durham of Gretna; five grandchildren; and one great-grandchildren. He is also survived by several cousins.
He was predeceased by a brother, James E. Mathes Jr.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Friday at Longview Friends Church with the Rev. Fred Kensler officiating. Interment will be in Danville Memorial Gardens.

YANCEYVILLE, N.C. - George Moore, 98, of Brian Health Center, died Sunday, Dec. 1, 2002, at the center.
Born Dec. 12, 1903, in Caswell County, he was the son of Annie Jeffries Moore and Nelson Moore.
He attended the public schools in Caswell County. He was a member and deacon of Hamer Baptist Church.
He is survived by two children, Virginia Stanfield of Leasburg and Mike Moore of Blanch; a sister, Virginia Allen of Blanch; and seven grandchildren.
The funeral will be held 1 p.m. Thursday at Hamer Baptist Church, Blanch, with the Rev. Cephus Lea officiating. Interment will be in the church cemetery.

Irvin Overby 'Son' Stowe
DRY FORK, Va. - Irvin Overby "Son" Stowe, 96, formerly of Dry Fork Road, died Monday, Dec. 2, 2002, at Riverside Health Care Center.
Born Oct. 13, 1906, in Dry Fork, he was the son of Ulysses Grant Stowe and Rebecca Daniel Stowe.
He was a self-employed farmer and member of Hopewell United Methodist Church. He was the last surviving member of his generation.
He was married to Lessie Shelton Stowe, who predeceased him in 1995.
He is survived by two sons, Douglas Stowe of Dry Fork and I.D. Stowe of Danville; a daughter, Ann Stowe Sigmon of Danville; 10 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren; and seven great-great-grandchildren.
In addition to his wife, he was predeceased by a son, Wellons A. Stowe; a daughter, Isabelle Stowe Compton; four brothers, Henry Stowe, David Stowe, Major Stowe and Thomas Stowe; and two sisters, Elizabeth Stowe and Essie Stowe Herndon.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Thursday at Hopewell United Methodist Church with the Rev. Clay Knick and Pastor Bob Whalley officiating. Interment will be in the church cemetery.

DANVILLE, Va. - Melchior Ash Jr., 82, of 143 Water St., died Thursday, June 20, 2002, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Dec. 23, 1919, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of Melchior Ash Sr. and Lucy Cunningham Ash.
He was married to Alice Clements Ash, who predeceased him. He was the owner and operator of Ash Radio and TV Service.
Survivors include two sons, W. Howard Ash of Danville and Melchior Ash III of Baltimore, Md.; and a number of grandchildren.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Thursday, June 27, at Mount Carmel Baptist Church with the Rev. James E. Stewart officiating. Interment will follow at Highland Burial Park cemetery with military honors provided by American Legion Post 29 Honor Guard.

CHATHAM, Va. - Mary Frances Bowen, 86, of 644 Coles Road, died Saturday, June 22, 2002, at Gretna Health Care Center.
Born April 9, 1916, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of William Daniel Frances and Lois Dawson Frances.
She was married to Gorden H. Bowen, who survives. She was a member of Sheva Church of Christ.
In addition to her husband of Gretna, survivors include two daughters, Christine B. Crider of Chatham and Verna B. Tuck of Gretna; three sons, Phillip Stanley Bowen of Chatham, Milton Daniel Bowen of Collinsville and Henry L. Bowen of Chatham; four sisters, Thelma F. Edwards of Live Oak, Fla., Ruth F. Walker and Eva F. Laform, both of Danville, and Beulah F. Whitlow of South Boston; four brothers, Lewis H. Frances of Sutherlin, Albert B. Frances of Burlington, N.C., and Henry H. Frances and Edward Frances, both of Gretna; 14 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; five step grandchildren; and 11 step great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by two brothers, Lawrence N. Frances and Malcolm Frances.
The funeral will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday at Sheva Church of Christ with Ministers J. Michael Stephenson, Larry L. Owen, Robert L. Johnson and Carson A. Dalton officiating. Interment will follow at Hillcrest Burial Park in Chatham.

Pearl Boyette
DANVILLE, Va. - Pearl Berry Simpson Boyette, of 1664 Maple Drive, died Saturday, June 22, 2002, at the residence.
Born Sept. 13, 1927, in Harlingen, Texas, she was the daughter of James Mace Berry and Maude Labar Berry.
She was first married to Charles A. Simpson, who predeceased her, and later married Amos M. Boyette, who also predeceased her. She was a 1944 graduate of the Corpus Christie High School in Corpus Christie, Texas. She was a member of the Keen Street Baptist Church and Degree of Pocahontas.
She was the Great Pocahontas of Virginia from 1987-1988. She was associated with the Piedmont Hardware Company for 22 years. She later worked at Associated Services Corporation from 1970-1990.
Survivors include one son, James A. Simpson of Danville; one daughter, Loretta S. Nichols of Danville; one sister, Evelyn B. King of Gonzalez, Texas; two grandsons and one granddaughter.
She was predeceased by four sisters and three brothers.
The funeral will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday at Townes Funeral Home Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Tom Brown and the Rev. Tom Wright officiating. Interment will follow at Highland Burial Park.

Minor S. Cheek Jr.
ALEXANDRIA, La. - Minor S. "Sonny" Cheek Jr. died Wednesday, June 19, 2002, after a lengthy illness.
Born March 20, 1936, in Danville, Va., he was the son of Texie S. Cheek, who survives, and Minor S. Cheek.
He was married to Phyllis Cheek, who survives. He was the owner of Cheek's accounting and was active in the Catholic church.
In addition to his mother of Danville, Va., and wife of the residence, survivors include one son, Kenneth Cheek of Louisiana; one daughter, Cynthia Fallon of Louisiana; five brothers, Bob Cheek of Aberdeen, Md., Billy Cheek, Ray Cheek and Jack Cheek, all of Danville, Va., and Jimmy Cheek of Moorehead City, N.C.; one sister, Patsy Johnson of Sykesville, Md.; and six grandchildren.
He was buried
Saturday in Alexandria.
Charles Mitchell
PELHAM, N.C. - Charles Dillard Mitchell, 59, of 7879 Old U.S. 29, died Sunday morning, June 23, 2002, at the residence.
Born Aug. 13, 1942, in Caswell County, he was the son of Daniel A. Mitchell and Pauline Evans Mitchell.
He was married to Hazel Boyd Mitchell, who survives. He spent most of his life in the Pelham community and was a mechanic for the Westbrook Elevator Company and later was co-owner of Piedmont Elevator Co. He attended the First Church of the Brethren on Glen Oak Drive and was a member of the Caswell Brotherhood Masonic Lodge.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include one daughter, Renee Hieronymus of Danville, Va.; and one son, Michael H. Mitchell of Pelham; and one sister, Jane Watlington of Providence.
He was predeceased by one brother, Alvis D. Mitchell.
The graveside service will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday at Dan River Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery, with the Rev. Richard Berkley officiating.
