Robert Overton

CHATHAM, Va.- Robert Herman Overton, 81, of 820 Mill Run Road, died Saturday, Feb. 5, 2000, at the Piney Forest Health Care Center in Danville.
Born April 11, 1918 in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of the late John Overton and Nannie Rigney Overton.
He was married to Doris Pruitt Overton, who predeceased him.
He was a member of Museville Christian Church and a retired farmer.
Survivors include two daughters, Dorothy Nelson of Chatham and Annie Mae Lawrence of Callands; two sons, G.A. Overton of Blairs and Robert Lee Overton of Axton; 10 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren and one step-grandchild.
Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Museville Christian Church with ministers Jack Oakes, J.D. Hunt III and Randle Johnson officiating. Interment icon will follow in the Museville Christian Church cemetery in Chatham.
The family will receive friends from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Monday at Scott Funeral Home in Chatham and at other times at the residence of Dorothy Nelson, 792 Mill Run Road.
Scott Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Amanda Tate

RINGGOLD, Va. - Amanda Hall Tate, 64, of 740 Rocksprings Road died Thursday, Feb. 3, 2000, in Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Aug. 12, 1935, in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of Howard A. Hall and Ethel Ingram Hall.
Aug. 4, 1955 she was married to William “Rink” Wilson Tate, who predeceased her. She was a member of Mount Zion Baptist Church. She was employed as an inspector for Star Paper Tube.
Survivors include one son, Eddie Tate of Ringgold; one daughter, “Sissy” T. Compton of Ringgold; two brothers, Howard A. Hall Jr. and John W. Hall, both of Danville; three grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
A graveside funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at Mount Zion Baptist Church cemetery with the Rev. Joseph Willis officiating.
The family will receive friends at the residence.
Barker Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Kate Trickey

SOUTH BOSTON, Va.- Kate Morris Trickey, 93, of The Woodview, died Saturday, Feb. 5, 2000.
Born Feb. 2, 1907 in Virginia, she was the daughter of the late Robert Morris and Nannie Morris.
She was married to John David Trickey, who predeceased her.
She was also predeceased by a daughter, Elizabeth Trickey Whitlow.
She was a retired elderly care provider. She was a member of Harmony United Methodist Church, where she served as a long-time Sunday school teacher.
Survivors include three sons, Robert Henry Trickey of Longhurst, N.C.; David Morell Trickey of Quinton, and A.C. Trickey of Mebane, N.C.; nine grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren and one great-great granddaughter.
A funeral will be 2 p.m. Monday at Harmony United Methodist Church. Interment icon will follow in the Harmony United Methodist Church cemetery in Alton.
The family will receive friends from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Sunday at Brooks Funeral Home, South Boston and at other times at the residence of the granddaughter Deborah Whitlow Powell, 3150 Cowford Road, Halifax.

Margaret Tuttle

COLLINSVILLE, Va. - Margaret Edith Maxey Tuttle, 78, formerly of Collinsville, died Friday, Feb. 4, 2000, at Stanleytown Health Care.
Born June 29, 1921 in Franklin County, she was the daughter of the late Lewis G. Maxey and Lucy Maxey Maxey.
She was married to the late Marvin L. Tuttle.
She was a member of Thomasson Heights Baptist Church, where she was a member of the choir and taught Sunday school.
She was retired from McCollum-Ferrell Shoe Store after 34 years of service.
Survivors include a daughter, Nancy Parcell of Collinsville; two sons, Buddy Tuttle of Oak Level and Billy Tuttle of Leonardo, N.J.; a sister, Dorothy Saia of Leonardo, N.J.; seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
A funeral service will be 3 p.m. Sunday at Collins Funeral Chapel, Bassett, with the Rev. James Alsop and Dr. Billy Martin officiating. Interment icon will follow in Roselawn Abbey, Martinsville.
Collins Funeral Services, Bassett, is in charge of arrangements.

Dochie Minter Woodall

DANVILLE, Va. - Dochie Minter Woodall, 93, of 213 Kinzer Ave., died Saturday, Feb. 5, 2000, at Danville Regional Medical Center after the past several months of declining health and two weeks in the hospital.
Born June 7, 1906, in Henry County, she was the daughter of the late John Marshall Minter and Mary Franklin Minter.
She was married to Taylor Patrick Woodall, who predeceased her in 1965.
She was predeceased by a great-grandson, Eben P. Ward.
She lived most her life in Pittsylvania County. Prior to retirement, she worked over 34 years in #5 Piece Goods at the Schoolfield Division of Dan River Mills. She then worked 10 years as a private sitter at Roman Eagle Memorial Home.
She was a life member of the Ballard Pruitt Chapter 647 of the VFW (Auxiliary) where she had served as president in 1969 and 1970.
At the time of her death, she was the oldest member of Mount Pleasant United Methodist Church.
Survivors include a daughter, Mary Lee Grath of Winston-Salem, N.C.; a son, Robert M. Woodall Sr. of Danville; a sister, Velma Ann Minter of New York City; seven grandchildren, Sandra W. Hamilton of London, England, Robert M. Woodall Jr., Karen W. Ward and Sharon W. Burke, all of Danville and Joyce M. Lawson, Robert B. McGrath and Marshall L. McGrath all of Winston-Salem, N.C.; eleven great-grandchildren and one great-great grandson.
A funeral will be 11 a.m., Monday at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel with the Rev. Steven Greer officiating. Interment icon will follow in Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel and at other times at the residence, 231 Kinzer Ave.

Elizabeth Everett

DANVILLE, Va. - Alice Elizabeth Lewis Everett, 90, of 1111 Main St., Stratford House, died Sunday, Feb. 6, 2000, at the Stratford Health Care Center.
Born Nov. 5, 1909, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Luther Scott Lewis and Virginia Ann Lewis.
She was married to Ruben Nicholas Everett Sr., who predeceased her in 1965.
She had lived in Danville since the age of six and attended Moseley Memorial United Methoodist Church.
In 1926 she joined Lee Street Baptist Church, which is now College Park Baptist Church.
She was educated in Danville City Schools and in Stratford College Music Department. She graduated in 1955 from Danville Memorial Hospital with a degree in professional and practical nursing.
She was a member of the Vesper Garden Club and the Nurse’s Employee Club at Danville Regional Medical Center.
She retired from Danville Memorial Hospital in 1973.
She was predeceased by two sons, Bobby Reid Everett and Ruben “Jakey” Everett Jr.; and one sister, Verna Lewis Spencer.
Survivors include one son, Lewis Carroll Everett of Richmond; one daughter, Jo Anne Savaglio of Milwaukee; one brother, Lynwood S. Lewis of Danville; seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Townes Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements, which are incomplete at this time.

Lester Gauldin

DANVILLE, Va. - Lester Robin Gauldin, 43, of 1805 Old Mayfield Road, died Saturday, Feb. 5, 2000, at his residence.
Born Sept. 11, 1956, in Danville, he was the son of Ernest Matthew Gauldin and Mallie Mae Southern Gauldin.
He spent his entire life in Danville and was employed at the Hatcher Center. He attended Dayspring Baptist Church.
Survivors include two brothers, William “Tommy” Gauldin and Lonnie E. Gauldin, both of Danville.
He was predeceased by one brother, Ernest Daniel Gauldin.
A funeral will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Calvin E. Hines officiating. Interment icon will be in Floral Hills Memory Gardens.
The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 p.m. at Swicegood Funeral Home and other times at the residence.

Wilton Powell

HALIFAX, Va. - Wilton McArthur “Mack” Powell, 57, of 1018 Stevens Lane, died Saturday, Feb. 5, 2000, at his residence.
Born March 29, 1942, in Halifax County, he was the son of Luther James Powell and Martha Hackney Powell.
He was married to Martha Ann Owen Powell. He was a member of Bethel Baptist Church.
In addition to his wife and mother, survivors include one daughter, Tracey P. Eanes of Chatham; one son, Steve Powell of South Boston; two sisters, Peggy L. Powell and Patsy P. Weaver, both of Rockville, Md.; three brothers, Glen Powell, James Powell, and Donnie Powell, all of Halifax; and one grandson.
A funeral will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday at Powell Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Tony Brooks and the Rev. Bob Watts officiating. Interment icon will be at Bethel Baptist Church cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the residence.

Marvin Scruggs

CHATHAM, Va. - Marvin Burch Scruggs, 76, of 17 Woodlawn Heights, died Sunday, Feb. 6, 2000, at his residence.
He was born in Pittsylvania County and was a son of Richard Duncan Scruggs and Mary Greene Scruggs.
He was married to Helen Mundy Scruggs, who survivies.
He was a member of Chatham Baptist Church and was employed as an investigator with the Division of Motor Vehicles prior to his retirement.
He was a veteran of World War II, a member of the Fourth Marine Division, fighting in the battle of Iwo Jima.
He was also a member of the Jaycees, the Sertoma Club, Veterans of Foreign Wars, the Fourth Marine Division Association, the Virginia State Police Alumni Inc., Modern Woodmen of America, Danville Elks Lodge #227, Pittsylvania Historical Society, and was an associate member of the Virginia Sheriff’s Institute.
He was a hunter education instuctor for the Department of Game and Inland Fisheries and taught defensive driving at Danville Community College. He was also a professional photographer.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include one sister, Laura S. Allen of Tuscon, Ariz., and two brothers, W.A. Scruggs of Richmond and Clyde Scruggs of Sebring, Fla.
A graveside funeral will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday at Hillcrest Burial Park with the Rev. Michael Macon and the Rev. Billy Scearce officiating.
The family will receive friends at the residence.
Scott Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
