HALIFAX, Va. - Marsha Leigh Clay, 37, of 4046 Oak Level Road, died Sunday, Feb. 6, 2000, at Halifax Regional Hospital.
Born Sep. 28, 1962, she was the daughter of the late Douglas Thomas Clay Sr., and Phyllis Dobbins Clay, who survives.
In addition to her mother of Halifax, survivors include one son, Michael Lee Clay of Halifax; one sister, Deborah C. Wilmoth of Yanceyville, N.C.; two brothers, Douglas Thomas Clay Jr. of Sutherlin and Mark A. Clay of Halifax.
A graveside funeral will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday at Halifax Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Jim Smith officiating.

Arthur Coles
CHATHAM, Va. - Arthur Lee Coles, 55, of 1152 North Main St., Apt. 2H, died Friday, Feb. 4, 2000, in Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Feb. 25, 1944, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of Linwood Coles and Pearl Barksdale Coles.
Prior to his retirement due to disability, he was employed with Dan River Inc., and was a member of Riceville Baptist Church in Java.
Survivors include one son, Bryan Coles of Martinsville; one stepson, Steve Briscoe of New York; four brothers, Henry Coles of Java, Otis Coles of Nathalie, Isaiah Coles of Germantown, Md., and Willie Gene Coles of California; three sisters, Clara Logan and Alma Coles of Java, and Pearl Davis of Brooklyn, N.Y.
A funeral will be held at 1 p.m. at Riceville Baptist Church with the Rev. Ronnie Walker officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the residence of his sister and brother-in-law, Mr. & Mrs. Alcy Logan, 251 Riceville Road, Java.

Texas Crowder
DANVILLE, Va. - Texas Roach Crowder, 94, of 406 Girard St. died Monday, Feb. 7, 2000, at Danville Regional Medical Center after several years of declining health and a two-day stay in the hospital.
Born April 26, 1905, in Halifax County, she was a daughter of Robert Archer Roach and Ella Pool Roach.
She was married
to James Leanord Crowder Sr., who predeceased her. She lived most of her life in the Danville area. Prior to her retirement, she was employed with Dan River Inc. in the weave room. She was a member of Moffet Memorial Baptist Church. She was the last surviving member of her generation.
Survivors include one daughter, Hazel C. King of Yorktown; one son, Curtis Crowder of Danville, and three grandchildren.
She was predeceased by two sons, James Leanord Crowder Jr. and Raymond Archer Crowder.

Madie Johnson
DANVILLE, Va. - Madie Belle Johnson, 77, of 711 Jefferson St., died Friday, Feb. 4, 2000, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born March 20, 1923, in Blanch, N.C., she was the daughter of John Hunt and Sarah Hinton Hunt.
She was married
to Ruby Lee Johnson, who predeceased her. She was employed with Dan River Inc., for many years and was educated in the Caswell County school system.
Survivors include four daughters, Elsie M. Anderson, Sherdean Williamson, Florine Jeffries, and Patricia Johnson, all of Danville; five sisters, Lillie Mae Walters and Phonsia Lewis, both of Danville, Althonsia Walters of Blanch, Rose Hunt of Reidsville, N.C., and Edna Lea of Washington D.C.; one brother, Willie Hunt of Washington D.C.; nine grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild.
A funeral will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Chapel of Fisher and Watkins Funeral Home with Elder Henry Anderson officiating. Interment
will follow in Highland Burial Park.The family will receive friends at the residence.

Beatrice Hammock
DANVILLE, Va. - Beatrice Henderson Hammock, 95, of 1558 Claiborne Street and formerly of South Boston Road, died Tuesday, Feb. 8, 2000, at Danville Regional Medical Center after three years of declining health.
Born Sept. 24, 1904, in Halifax County, she was the daughter of Embra Lee Henderson and Bernice Strange Henderson.
She was married
to Jacob Crockett Hammock, who predeceased her. She spent most of her life in the Sutherlin community. She was the oldest living member of the Victory Baptist Church, and the last surviving member of her generation.
Survivors include four daughters, Cecil Moss, Nell Riddle, and Edith Wilcox, all of Danville, and Bernice Minter of Newport News; nine grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Swicegood Chapel with the Rev. Roy W. Newton officiating. Interment
will be in Floral Hills Memory Gardens.
The family will receive friends at the residence of her daughter, Nell Riddle, 1558 Claiborne St.

Susie Hastings
DRY FORK, Va. - Susie Dalton Hastings, 96, of 6584 Dry Fork Road, died Tuesday, Feb. 8, 2000, at the Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born May 5, 1903, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of William Dalton and Lucille Leggons Dalton.
She was married
to Robert Thomas Hastings, who predeceased her. She was a member of Oakland United Methodist Church.
Survivors include two sons, Ralph Hastings of Danville and Ray Hastings of Blairs; ten grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, one great great-grandchild, two step great-grandchildren, and one step great great-grandchild.
She was predeceased by one daughter, Mary Frances H. Stevens; one son, Robert Thomas Hastings Jr.; two sisters and three brothers.
A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Oakland United Methodist Church with the Rev. Steve Lewis and the Rev. R. Fletcher Hardy III officiating. Interment
will be at Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends Wednesday from 7:30-8:30 p.m. at the Oakland United Methodist Church, and other times at the residence of her son, Ralph Hastings, Parkland Drive, Danville.

Nell Barnes Miller
DANVILLE, Va. - Nell Barnes Miller, 88, wife of Kemp Davidson Miller (deceased), died on Tuesday, February 8, at Martha Jefferson Hospital in Charlottesville, VA.
She lived in Surrey Hills, Danville, VA, until 1995 when she moved to Waynesboro, VA. Her last residence was the Gibson Adult Home in Crozet, VA.
Mrs. Miller was born May 10, 1911, in Bassett, VA, the daughter of William Perry Brnes and Pearl Joyce Watkins Barnes. In addition to her parents and husband, she is preceded in death by an infant son; two brothers, Charles (Tince) Barnes and William Perry Barnes II; two sisters, Mrs. Earl (Hazel) Smith and Mrs. Clarice Pillar Saylor; her daughter-in-law, Mrs. Hugh (Betty Alley) Miller and her son-in-law, James Phillips Tipton.
Surviving are her brother, Bobby Watkins Barnes, of Danville; her daughter, Mrs. James Phillips Tipton (Joyce) of Waynesboro; a son, Hugh (Sonny) Miller of Danville; and a son and his wife, William Larry Miller and Sue Leggett Miller of Danville. She is also survived by 8 grandchildren, Terry Lee Miller and Mary Sue Miller Childers of Danville; Suzanne Miller Woodbury of Wilmington, NC; William Larry Miller, Jr. of Wintergreen, VA; Nell Tipton Smith of Lexington, VA; Lee Tipton Read of Charlottesville; Beth Tipton McDevitt and James Phillips (Zo) Tipton, II of Waynesboro; 14 great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Mrs. Miller was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother as well as a gracious neighbor and friend to many. An avid gardener and active churchwoman, she was a member of Woodlawn Baptist Church, Surry Hills Par T Club, Town and Country Garden Club, West End Christian Church Friendship Class and King’s Daughters. She was a volunteer at the Hatcher Center.
A funeral service will be held on Friday, February 11, 2000, 2:00 P.M. at Townes Memorial Chapel. Mr. Timothy T. Read will be conducting the services. The family will have a private interment at Danville Memorial Gardens following the services.
The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.

Ellen Poindexter
DANVILLE, Va. - Ellen Jane Poindexter, 87, of 177 Confederate Ave., died Tuesday, Feb. 8, 2000, at her residence.
Born June 18, 1912, in Deer Park, Md., she was the daughter of Bushrod Grimes and Sada Laughlin Grimes.
She was married
to Miles Poindexter II, who predeceased her March 8, 1997. She was a graduate of West Virginia University. During WWII, she worked as a social worker with the American Red Cross in Richmond and later worked as a case worker with the Danville Social Service Department for 20 years. She was a member of the Episcopal Church of the Epiphany, and a former member of the Shakespeare Club and the Wednesday Club.
Survivors include one son, Miles Poindexter III of Fort George, Fla., and one grandson.
A graveside funeral will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at Mountain View cemetery with the Rev. James Mathieson officiating.

Olander Thornton
DANVILLE, Va. - Olander Thornton, 65, of 856 Stoney Mill School Road died Sunday, Feb. 6, 2000, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born April 29, 1934, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of John Thornton and Rosa Lee Dixon Thornton.
He was married
to Minnie Mozelle Wilson Thornton, who survives. He was employed for many years at W.M. Bassett Furniture Company prior to his retirement.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include one daughter, Stephanie Thornton of the residence; one son, Phillip Thornton of Danville; one sister, Lula McLaughlin of Danville, and eight grandchildren.
He was predeceased by three brothers and one sister.
A funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday at Silver Creek Baptist Church with the Rev. Dwight Mack officiating. Interment
will follow in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the residence.

Willie Dansey Watson
CHATHAM, Va. - Mr. Willie Dansey Watson, 80, died February 8, 2000 at the Gretna Healthcare Facility. He was born and reared in Pittsylvania Co. Willie served in the European Theater during WWII in the U.S. Army Air Force and it was during that time he met and fell in love with his wife, Andree, a native of Belgium. Willie and Andree have celebrated more than 50 years of marriage together. He is the son of the late Letcher Joab and Mary Madden Watson. Later, Willie went into farming and after many years, he retired.
He was the beloved father of a son and daughter-in-law, Willie H. and Connie C. Watson of Danville; a daughter and son-in-law, Patsy W. and Robert E. Nuckols of Chatham. Willie is also survived by a brother, John R. Watson of Newport News; one sister, Paulina Foust of Chatham; four grandchildren: Janet Phillips, Michael Watson, Holly Nuckols, Keenan R. Nuckols and two great grandchildren, Hayley and Evan Phillips. Willie was pre-deceased by a brother, Letcher Joab Watson, Jr.
A Memorial Service will be held Thursday, February 10, 2000, 4:30 p.m. at New Bethel Church of the Breatheren with the Rev. Avery Parr officiating. The family will receive friends at the residence.
Arrangements are by Cremation Society of Virginia in Clarksville.
Johan Bark
SOUTH BOSTON, Va. - Johan Henry Bark, 51, of 2081 Cedar Lake Road, died Tuesday, Feb. 8, 2000, at Halifax Regional Hospital.
Born Sept. 24, 1948, in Brooklyn, N.Y., he was a son of Otto Bark and Phyllis Bark.
He was married
to Suzanne Carrington Bark, who survives. He was a Navy Seal with two tours of duty in Vietnam. He was a loving husband and father.
In addition to his wife, survivors include one daughter, Cristalle Bark of South Boston; one son, Otto Bark of Peaks Island, Maine; one sister, Lucy Troup of Greenwood Lake, N.Y., and two brothers, Peter Bark of Warwick, N.Y. and Paul Bark of Crystal Hill.
A funeral will be held 2 p.m. Friday at Powell Funeral Home with the Rev. Barry Burkeholder and the Rev. Bob Gluhareff officiating.
The family received friends from 7-8 p.m. Thursday at Powell Funeral Home.
