George McGuire
AXTON, Va. - George Obie McGuire, 90, formerly of Mount Vernon Road died Saturday, Feb. 12, 2000, at Mountain View Elderly Care.
Born Dec. 5, 1909, in Henry County, he was the son of Franklin Elijah McGuire and Pricie Mae Barrow McGuire.
He was married
to Velma Elizabeth Dickinson McGuire, who predeceased him in 1989.
Survivors include one son, Harold McGuire of Axton; one daughter, Muriel Delores Parlier of Martinsville; three grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
In addition to his wife and parents, he was predeceased by six brothers, Elijah McGuire, Harry McGuire, Lewis McGuire, Roy McGuire, Burford McGuire and John McGuire and three sisters, Blanch Estes, Della Underwood and Sally Minter.
He was a farmer. He was retired from the Virginia Department of Transportation where he worked as an equipment operator for more than 26 years.
He was a lifetime member of County Line Christian Church.
A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at the McGuire Family cemetery, Mount Vernon Road, with the Rev. Dale Darley and the Rev. Sammy Marlowe officiating.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Sunday at McKee-Stone Funeral Services Chapel.
Rosa Patterson
DANVILLE, Va. - Rosa Ellen Thomas Patterson, 78, of 306 Gray St. died Thursday, Feb. 10, 2000, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Aug. 17, 1921, in Berwind, W.Va., she was the daughter of Jim Thomas and Ethel Robertson Thomas.
She was married
to Joe Sam Patterson, who predeceased her. She was employed at Dan River Mills, Inc. for many years prior to her retirement.
Survivors include two daughters, Alfreda Patterson of the residence and Martha Hall of Danville; four sons, George Patterson, Langston Patterson, Joe Junior Patterson and Tommie Lee Thomas, all of Danville; two sisters, Harriet Godfrey of Norfolk and Betty Hairston of Ruffin,N.C.; and four brothers, Thurman Thomas of the residence, Alexander Thomas, John Thomas, and Clarence Thomas, all of Danville.
A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at the Chapel of Fisher and Watkins Funeral Home. Interment
will follow in Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends at the residence.

Lucille Bennett
RINGGOLD, Va. - Lucille Yates Bennett, 92, of 629 Ferguson Road, died Sunday, Feb. 13, 2000 at Danville Regional Medical Center.
She was born May 14, 1907 in Pittsylvania County, a daughter of John Richard Yates and Mary Frances Reynolds Yates. On Jan. 27, 1927, she was married
to Ernest L. Bennett, who died Jan. 5, 2000.
Bennett lived her entire life in the Ringgold Community. She was a member of Ringgold Baptist Church and the Kaiser-Shumate Circle.
Survivors include three sons, William J. Bennett of Black Mountain, N.C., John L. Bennett, of Graham, N.C., and Walter E. Bennett of Danville; a daughter, Nancy B. Boyd of Ringgold, 15 grandchildren and 31 great-grandchildren.
Bennett was predeceased by a daughter, Frances Evans, a great-granddaughter, Misty Adkins, two sisters and four brothers.
Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Wednesday from the Ringgold Baptist Church by the Rev. Carl E. Burger, with interment to follow in Floral Hills Memory Gardens.
The family will receive friends from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Ringgold Baptist Church and at other times at the residence of Nancy B. Boyd, 2216 Ringgold Road.

Betty Dunovant
DANVILLE, Va. - Betty Hawk Dunovant, 66, of 238 Rocklawn Ave., died Saturday evening, Feb. 12, 2000 at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Dunovant was born in Washington, D.C., Sept. 12, 1933. She was predeceased by her husband, John Henry Dunovant, who died in 1988.
Mrs. Dunovant spent most of her life in Danville, where she was a member and minister of United Christian Fellowship Church.
Survivors include one son, Joseph Dunovant of Washington, D.C., one daughter, Sonia G. Dunovant of Danville, and one grandchild.
Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Tuesday at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel.
Interment will follow at Mountain View cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Monday evening.
Mable Lyle
RALEIGH, Miss. - Mable C. Lyle, 86, formerly of Danville, Va., died Nov. 4, 1999 of heart failure.
Born and raised in Eden, N.C., Lyle lived most of her life in Danville. She moved to Raleigh in 1984.
She worked for Danville Knitting Mills for 31 years.
She is survived by a daughter, Dorothy Johnson, six grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and a host of nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, C.O. Lyle, and her son-in-law, James T. Johnson.
Burial was at Johnson cemetery in Raleigh.
Ann Lynch
DANVILLE, Va. - Ann Thompson Lynch, 66, of 310 Northmont Blvd., died Sunday, Feb. 13, 2000 at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born April 20, 1933 in Halifax County, she was the daughter of Bernard Garland Dickson and Thelma Compton Dickson. On July 18, 1998, she married
Sherman Edward Lynch, who survives at the residence.
Lynch lived her entire life in Danville and Pittsylvania County. She was retired from the Southern Virginia Mental Health Institute, where she worked as a payroll accountant for 14 years.
She was a member of North Main Baptist Church and a member of the A.B.W.A. Danville Charter Chapter.
In addition to her husband, survivors include one son, Kenneth Andrews of Frankfurt, Germany, one daughter, Sue A. Burnett of Danville, one sister, Ruby D. Brumfield of Keeling, one brother, Meredith Dickson of Vernon Hill, and one granddaughter.
She was predeceased by her brother, Dr. Cecil B. Dickson.
The family will be at the residence, 310 Northmont Blvd. Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel is in charge of funeral arrangements, which are incomplete.
Nettie McDaniel
ALTAVISTA, Va. - Nettie Dinkle McDaniel, 92, of 1005 Amherst Ave., Altavista, died Sunday, Feb. 13, 2000 in Virginia Baptist Hospital.
Born Jan. 7, 1908 in Bedford County, she was a daughter of the late Chapel and Lessie Vaughan Dinkle.
She was twice married
, first to the late Joseph Hockett and second to the late Robert McDaniel.
She was a member of Valley View Church of God.
She is survived by one son, Roosevelt Hockett of Lynchburg; five daughters, Edith Lynn of Reidsville, N.C., Rebecca Bishop of Brown Summit, N.C., Dorothy Melton of Greensboro, N.C., Joyce Dalton of Gretna and Gloria McDaniel of Altavista; one sister, Eula Crouch of Lynchburg; nineteen grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren, seven great-great-grandchildren, 35 step-grandchildren and 59 step-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by two sons, Robert and Wilbur Hockett, one daughter, Virginia Hoskins, one brother, Wilbur Dinkle and seven step-children.
A funeral service will be conducted 2 p.m. Tuesday in Valley View Church of God by the Rev. Boyd Osborne and the Rev. Bert Johnson. Burial will follow in Danville Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends at Finch and Finch Funeral Home, Altavista, from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Monday and at other times at the residence.
Robert McDonald
CHATHAM, Va. - Robert L. “Mac” McDonald, 80, of 4141 Irish Road, Chatham, Va., died Sunday morning, Feb. 13, 2000 at his residence.
He was born Jan. 5, 1920 in New York, the son of Lewis Love McDonald and Pearl Candell McDonald.
He was married
April 7, 1990 to Melva J. McDonald, who survives at the residence.
He was an avid collector and dealer of cameras of all types. He was a member of Mt. Hermon Baptist Church.
Besides his wife of the residence, He is survived by two daughters, Roberta M. Schnabel of Jacksonville, Fla., and Sally M. Hite of Newburg, Ind., one son, Arthur McDonald of San Francisco, and three grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held 7 p.m. Tuesday at Mt. Hermon Baptist Church. Townes Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Tarulatta Patel
DANVILLE, Va. - Tarulatta Patel, 64, of 137 London Bridge Drive, died Saturday, Feb. 12, 2000 at her residence.
Born May 15, 1935 in Baroda, India, Patel was the daughter of Chottabhi Patel and Shandab Shantaben Amin. She was married
to Haswant Patel, who survives.
Patel was a homemaker and co-owner of White Swan Laundry and Dry Cleaning.
In addition to her husband, survivors include one son, Jay “Gokol” Patel of Danville; one daughter, Nupan Desai of Cary, N.C.; one brother, Rameshbhai Patel of South Attleboro, Mass.; four sisters, Pushpa Ben Patel of Baroda, India, and Jayshree Ben Patel of Prince George, Canada, as well as Ramaben Amin and Devyani Ben Patel, both of North Attleboro, Mass. There also are four surviving grandchildren in addition to a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Traditional Indian burial rites will be conducted 11 a.m. Monday at the Mitchell Funeral Home Chapel, Saint Mary’s St., Raleigh, N.C.
