DANVILLE, Va. - Betty Hawk Dunovant, 66, of 238 Rocklawn Ave. died Saturday, Feb. 12, 2000, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Sept. 12, 1933, in Washington.
She was married
to John Henry Dunovant, who predeceased her in 1988. She spent most of her life in Danville where she was a member of and minister of United Christian Fellowship Church.
Survivors include one son, Joseph Dunovant of Washington; one daughter, Sonia G. Dunovant of Danville, and one grandchild.
A funeral will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel. Interment
will be at Mountain View cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

Sarah Hatchett
RINGGOLD, Va. - Sarah Jane Hatchett, 70, of 565 Ringgold Road, died Saturday, Feb. 12, 2000, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Jan. 17, 1930, in New York, she was a daughter of Robert Holt and Ethel Carter Holt.
She was married
to William Edward Hatchett, who survives. She was a housewife.
In addition to her husband of the residence, survivors include two daughters, Chernelus Hatchett of Danville, Medure Hatchett of Laurel, Md.; four sons, William Thomas Hatchett of Youngsville, N.C., Sylvester Hatchett of Jonesboro, Ga., Robbin Hatchett of Ringgold, Va., and Wilbert Hatchett of Laurel, Md.; five brothers, Jack Holt and Robert Holt, both of New York, Elijah Holt of Halifax, Ting Holt of Burlington, N.C., and Samuel Holt of Maryland; three grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.
A funeral will be 1 p.m., Wednesday, from the White Rock Baptist Church in Mountain Hill with Rev. Curtis Strader officiating. Interment
will follow in Floral Hills Memory Gardens.
The family will receive friends at the residence.

Samuel Richardson Jr.
PITTSVILLE, Va. - Samuel Carl Richardson Jr., 72, of 1071 Bullseye Lane died Thursday, Jan. 27, 2000, at Danville Regional Medical Ceneter.
Born Jan. 5, 1928, in Burlington, N.C., he was a son of Samuel Carl Richardson Sr. and Arma Way Richardson Leath.
He was married
to Opal Mae Sumner Richardson, who predeceased him. He retired after 24 years of service in the U.S. Navy as a chief navigator on nuclear submarines. He also worked in Naval Intelligence for the Pentagon and Com Subpac Fleet Naval Intelligence in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. He was a former member of the Burlington, N.C., Fire Dept. and was in the US Air Force Reserves for three years, a former member of the Chesapeake Sheriff's Office and was retired from the Norfolk Naval Base Police.
Survivors include one daughter, Carlene Richardson Say of Pittsville; a son, Steven Richardson of Smithfield; one brother, Homer Richardson of Memphis, Tenn., and four grandchildren.
A memorial service will be 3 p.m. Saturday at Pittsville Holiness Church, Pittsville, with the Rev. James Tallent officiating.

Joseph Royal
ST. ALBANS, N.Y. - Joseph Royal, 90, died Thursday, Feb. 10, 2000.
He was born Aug. 8, 1909, in Halifax County.
Survivors include one daughter, Glenda Royal of St. Albans; one sister, Emma Fleetwood of South Boston, Va., and one son, James Mills of St. Albans.
A funeral will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Crawford, Garrett, and Burton Funeral Home Chapel in Halifax, Va., with the Elder Sebron Isom officiating. Interment
will be in the Royal Family cemetery.

Doris Simpson
GRETNA, Va. - Doris Marie Simpson, 57, of 5157 Telegraph Road, died Monday, Feb. 14, 2000, at her residence.
Born Aug. 17, 1942, in Campbell County, she was a daughter of Lucille Childress Rowland, who survives, and John Board Goodman Sr.
She was a homemaker and member of Piney Grove Baptist Church.
In addition to her mother, survivors include two sons, Douglas Simpson and Ray Simpson of Gretna; three daughters, Shelia Smith of Chatsworth, Ga., Yvonne Wells of Martinsville, and Gail Thomas of Gretna; her stepfather, Arthur Anderson Rowland of Gretna; one brother, Roger Goodman of Gretna; two sisters, Vera Neal and Shirley Hull, both of Gretna, and six grandchildren.
She was predeceased by a brother, John Board Goodman.
A funeral will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Piney Grove Baptist Church with the Rev. Chuck Haley officiating. Interment
will be in the Rowland Family cemetery.

Betty Walden
CHATHAM, Va. - Betty Compton Walden, 35, of 5789 Climax Road, Chatham, Va., died Feb. 14, 2000, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born July 5, 1964, in Pittyslvania County, she was the daughter of the late Hubert Marshall Compton and Lellia Keatts Compton.
She was a member of Open Bible Baptist Church.
She is survived by her husband, John Wayne Walden of Chatham; three daughters, Michelle Walden, Samantha Walden, Crystall Dawn; and one son, Johnathan Walden, all of the residence; two sisters, Ann C. Moser of Chatham and Linda C. Walden of Danville; three brothers, Earl Compton of Chatham, James Compton of Danville, and Dickie Lewis Compton of Nashville, Tenn.
She was predeceased by one brother, Wayne Compton.
A funeral will be 2 p.m. Wednesday, at the Scott Funeral Home Chapel with Minister Rudolph A. Hearst officiating. Interment
will be in the Wagner Family cemetery in Chatham, Va.

Fannie Whitlow
SOUTH BOSTON, Va. - Fannie Neal Whitlow, 86, of Woodview Nursing Home died February 13, 2000, at the nursing home where she had been a resident for four months.
Born April 23, 1913, in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of Less Neal and Kate Neal Neal.
She was married
to Orvin Whitlow, who predeceased her. She spent most of her life in Danville.
She was a homemaker.
Survivors include one daughter, Sylvia B. Jefferson of Keeling; five grandchildren and several great grandchildren.
A private graveside service will be at Highland Burial Park.

Iris Merchant Allen
FISHERVILLE, Va. - Iris Merchant Allen, 79, of Mt. Solon, died Tuesday, Feb. 15, 2000, at the Augusta Rehabilitation Center, Fisherville, after one month of declining health.
Born April 11, 1920, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Joe Merchant and Estelle Shumate Merchant.
She married
Syd Leroy Allen on Dec. 14, 1940, who predeceased her Dec. 15, 1994.
She spent most of her life in Pittsylvania County but moved to live with her daughter at Mt. Solon before entering the Rehabilitation Center in Fisherville. She was a waitress at Carter's Grill for many years and was a member of Providence United Methodist Church and the United Methodist Women's Club of the church.
Survivors include one daughter, Marcia Allen Elliott of Mt. Solon; one son, Fred Allen of Sutherlin; one brother, Joe Merchant of Danville and three grandchildren.
A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Danville Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Dr. Leroy Clark officiating.
The family will receive friends at the graveside immediately following the service and at other times at the residence of her son, Fred Allen, 1088 Reeves Mill Road, Sutherlin.

Virginia Barley
KEELING, Va. - Virginia Brown Barley, 72, of 1348 Oak Grove Road died Monday, Feb. 14, 2000, at her residence.
Born June 24, 1927, in Henry County, she was the daughter of George Washington Adams and Susie Kaye Lampkin Adams.
She was married
to William Henry Barley, who predeceased her. She was a homemaker and also worked as a cafeteria aid in the Danville City School System prior to her retirement.
Survivors include two daughters, Beatrice Childress of Keeling and Ruth Adams of Ringgold; one son, Charles Adams of Danville; three sisters, Frances Adams of Danville, Flossie Royal of Blairs, and Annie Elizabeth Hampton of Cascade; three brothers, James Russell Adams of New Haven, Conn., Monroe Adams of Chatham, and Charlie Adams of Danville and numerous grandchildren.
A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at the chapel of Fisher and Watkins Funeral Home with the Rev. Thomas Brooks officiating. Interment
will follow in Highland Burial Park.

Barbara Hamlett Davis
DANVILLE, Va. - Barbara Hamlett Davis, 75, of 3892 Mount View Road, died Feb. 16, 2000, in Danville Regional Medical Center after two years of declining health and one week in the hospital.
Born Aug. 6, 1924, in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of Walter Fleming Hamlett and Mattie Simpson Hamlett.
She was married
to Brice Harlow Davis, who predeceased her.
She lived all of her life in Pittsylvania County. Prior to her retirement, she worked at Dan River Inc., as a lab technician in the Research Department for over 25 years. She was of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include two sons, Ronald L. Davis Sr. of Chatham and Edgar (Pat) Davis of the residence; three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by one granddaughter.
A funeral will be 2 p.m. Friday at the Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel with the Rev. Billy Scearce officiating. Interment
will follow at Highland Burial Park.
