Lillian Lorraine Horton
RINGGOLD, Va. - Lillian Lorraine Horton, 70, of 1548 Mount Hill Road, died Monday Feb. 21, 2000 at Forsyth Memorial Hospital, Winston-Salem, N.C.
Born June 22, 1929, in Abingdon, she was a daughter of Ernest C. Cumbo and Stella M. Arnold Cumbo.
She was married
to Lester Lee Spence who predeceased her, and later married
Grat M. Horton who also predeceased her.
She spent most of her life in Danville where she was a bus driver for the Pittsylvania County School System for 24 years. She was of the Pentecostal Holiness faith.
In addition to her husbands and parents, she was predeceased by a sister, Irene Pruitt.
Survivors include three daughters, Patricia Spence Simmons and Sharon Spence Gammon both of Ringgold, and Barbara Ann Smith of Deltona, Fla.; four sons, Larry L. Spence of Eden, N.C., Steven Spence of Ringgold, Dale Hundley of Salisbury, N.C., Timothy Wayne Spence of Danville; two sisters, Evelyn Adkins of Callands, Jewel Chavers of Danville; 10 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
A funeral will be held 2 p.m. Thursday at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Joey Yeatts and Rev. Roger Ewing officiating. Interment
will follow at Floral Hills Memory Gardens.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home and at other times at the residence of her daughter, Sharon Spence Gammon, at 1544 Mt. Hill Road, Ringgold.
Robert Dallas Howard
DANVILLE, Va. - Robert Dallas Howard, 71, of 880 Robertson Lane, went to be with the Lord, Sunday, February 20, 2000, at the University of Virginia Hospital, in Charlottesville, Va.
Born February 12, 1929, in Person County, N.C., he was the son of Gilbert Forest Howard and Fannie Newton Howard, who both predeceased him.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force, a member of the Lions Club, and the Gideons International. He was a member of Mount Hermon Baptist Church in Danville, Va. He was a member of Kempsville Baptist Church in Virginia Beach, Va; and he was a member of Cool Springs Baptist Church in Richmond, Va. He was owner and operator of Rosewood Memorial Park, Princess Ann Memorial Park, Kellum Funeral Home Inc., and Old Dominion University Apts. in Virginia Beach. He was also General Manager of Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Richmond, Va. He later was an overseer of operations at Danville Memorial Gardens in Danville, Va.
He was married
on March 26, 1970, to Jennie Sarno Howard, who survives.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons, Robert D. Howard Jr. of Arkansas, Ronald R. Howard of Virginia Beach, Va.; two daughters, Shirley H. Womble of Bowling Green, Va., Christine M. Howard of Danville, Va.; two brothers, James N. Howard of Dry Fork, Va., Billy L. Howard of Danville, Va.; three sisters, Elizabeth H. Saunders of Gretna, Va., Louise H. Fuller of Richmond, Va., Musettee H. Hendrick of Danville, Va.; and seven grandchildren, Shane R. Howard of Virginia Beach, Sarah N. Womble of Bowling Green, Va., Katelyn E. Womble of Bowling Green, Carter C. Howard of Arkansas, Clark Pryor of Arkansas, Jeremy Halliwell, and Courtney Halliwell, both of Virginia Beach.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Mount Hermon Baptist Church Building Fund, or Gideons International, 5023 Worsham Court, Danville, Va. 24540, or Alex Sawyer Hospitality House of U.Va. Charlottesville, Va, 22903.
A funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Mount Hermon Baptist Church with the Rev. Don Davidson officiating. Interment
will follow at Lambert Memorial Baptist Church cemetery, in Roxboro, N.C.

Alpha Murrell W. Moore
DANVILLE, Va. - Alpha Murrell W. Moore, age 85, of 3504 Horseshoe Road, died early Monday morning February 21, 2000, at Danville Regional Medical Center after one year of declining health.
Mrs. Moore was born in Pittsylvania County on April 19, 1914, a daughter of the late George Franklin Murrell and Ada Melissa Adkins Murrell. She was first married
to Ernest Womack who died in 1943, and later married
Charlie Moore who died in 1989.
Mrs. Moore had spent most of her life in the Danville area, and worked at Dan River Inc., for a number of years before retiring. She was a member of Vandola Baptist Church. She was the last surviving member of her generation.
Survivors include two sons: Dallas Womack and daughter-in-law Jeanette Womack of Danville, and Charlie Wayne Moore and daughter-in-law Marsha Moore of Axton, and two daughters: Vera Reid and son-in-law Philip Reid, and Judy Wells and son-in-law Tommy Wells all of Danville, and five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren also survive.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Dr. Leroy Clack. Interment
will follow at Highland Burial Park. The family received friends at the funeral home on Tuesday evening from 7:00-8:30 p.m., and at other times at the residence of her daughter and son-in-law, Judy and Tommy Wells, at 3584 Horseshoe Road.
Ottie M. Prunty
AXTON, Va. - Ottie M. Prunty, 91, of 2793 Still Meadows Road, Axton, died Feb. 20, 2000, at the Memorial Hospital.
Born Feb. 18, 1909 in Bedford County, she was a daughter of Robert Murphy and Elila Serelda Brown Murphy, who both predeceased her.
She married
Claude Sawnson Prunty, who also predeceased her. She was a member of Sharon Grove Baptist Church, and the Ladies Auxiliary of Sharon Grove. She was the Baptist faith. She was a housewife.
In addition to her spouse and parents, she was predeceased by three daughters, Queen N. Prunty, Rosetta Prunty and Mary F. Arthur; and two sons, Carlton Prunty and Cabel Edward Prunty.
Survivors include three daughters, Stella M. Rogers of Axton, Greta L. Lipford of Callands, Virginia A. Baker of Staunton, Va.; four sons, Claude Vermon Prunty of Axton, George W. Prunty of Jamestown, Raymond H. Prunty of Callands, Harry L. Clements of Axton; one brother, Charlie Murphy of Moneta; three sisters, Ethel Mae Cora Lie Murphy, Alice Edna Murphy and Ola Norman, all of Moneta; 33 grandchildren, 53 great-grandchildren, and five great-great-grandchildren.
A funeral will be held 1 p.m. Thursday at Sharon Grove Baptist Church with the Rev. Ronald D. Clarke officiating. Interment
will follow in Floral Memorial Park. Visitation will take place one hour before the funeral, and at other times at the residence.

James Earl Shelton
DANVILLE, Va. - James Earl Shelton, 74, of 541 Page St., died Tuesday, Feb. 22, 2000, at his residence after several years of declining health.
Born May 29, 1925, he was a son of Tony David Shelton and Clara Mize Shelton. He lived most of his life in Pittsylvania County and was a member of Westover Hills Christian Church. Prior to his retirement due to disability, he worked as a logger. He was a U.S. Army veteran, serving during World War II.
He was married
to Bessie Tranberger Shelton, who survives.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include one daughter, Marie S. Gauldin of Chatham; two sons, Michael Shelton and Bruce Shelton, both of Danville; three brothers, Ed Shelton of Bassett, Clyde Shelton of Bassett, and Linwood Shelton of Fieldale; one sister, Frances S. Thacker of Ferrum; four grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.
A funeral will be held 4 p.m. Thursday, from Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel with the Rev. Daryl Joyce officiating. Interment
will follow in the Danville Memorial Gardens, with military honors by the American Legion Post No. 1097.

Evelyn Yeatts Thompson
DANVILLE, Va. - Evelyn Yeatts Thompson, 84, formerly of 139 Davenport St., died Tuesday, Feb. 22, 2000, at Roman Eagle Memorial Nursing Home.
Born Sept. 14, 1915 in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of Daniel P. Yeatts and Rosa D. Yeatts.
She was married
to Doc A. Thompson, who predeceased her.
She was a member of Mount Olivet United Methodist Church. Prior to her retirement, she worked at Dan River Inc., 8A after 43 years of service.
In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by her parents and one daughter, Ila Mae Thompson.
Survivors include one daughter, Louise T. Faucette of Danville; one son, Danny Thompson of Danville; four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
A funeral date has not yet been set.

Rev. Sam Adams
CASCADE, Va. - Rev. Sam Willie Adams, 71, of 2606 Cascade Road, died Monday, Feb. 21, 2000.
He was born in Pittsylvania County.
He was married
to Dorothy Reed Adams, who survives. He was pastor of Galilee Missionary Baptist Church for over 40 years, and was retired from Fieldcrest-Cannon.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include three daughters, Brenda Williamson and Vanessa Jamison, both of Martinsville, and Forrestine Dickerson of Richmond; two sons, Winford Adams of Martinsville and Mark Adams of Richmond; five sisters, Pastor Lavender Williams of Danville, Vivian Millner and Tama Millner, both of Martinsville, Fairy Davis of Richmond, and Mary Lightfoot of Cascade; five brothers, Rudolph Adams of Pittsburgh, Phillip and Steve Adams, both of Hampton, Frank Adams of Cascade, and Dearl Adams of Collinsville; 11 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
He was predeceased by a son, Sammy Adams.
A funeral will be noon Saturday at Galilee Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. Michael Penn officiating. Burial will follow in the Adams Family cemetery, Cascade.
The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 p.m. Friday at the church.

Hedy Villar Alabanza
DANVILLE, Va. - Hedy Villar Alabanza, 55, of 288 Fox Hollow Drive, died Tuesday, Feb. 22, 2000, at Duke University Medical Center in Durham, N.C.
Born Dec. 23, 1944, in Paracale, Philippines, she was the daughter of Lope Villar and Magdalena Moya Villar.
She was married
to Dr. Thomas M. Alabanza on March 29, 1970, who survives.
She had been a resident of Danville for 27 years where she was a homemaker and member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, the Luncheon Pilot Club, The Wednesday Club, and Danville-Pittsylvania Academy of Medicine Auxiliary Unit.
In addition to her husband of the residence, survivors include four sons, Richard Alabanza of Richmond, Ronald Alabanza of Charlottesville, Mark Alabanza of Greensboro, N.C., Paul Alabanza of Chapel Hill, N.C.; one daughter, Abigail Alabanza of Danville; two brothers, Neftali Villar of Paracale, Philippines, Alexis Villar of San Pedro, Lagona, Philippines; two sisters, Thelma Era and Nymia Prepena of Paracale, Philippines.
She was predeceased by one sister, Sonya Ong.
A mass of Christian burial will be held 11 a.m. Saturday from Sacred Heart Catholic Church with Fr. David V. McGuire officiating. Interment
will follow in Danville Memorial Gardens.
A wake service will be held 7 p.m. Friday from Townes Funeral Home by Fr. David V. McGuire with the family receiving friends following the service until 8:30 p.m.
The family will receive friends at other times at the residence between 3-5 p.m.

C.L. Carter
DANVILLE, Va. - Claude Lee (C.L.) Carter Jr., 71, of 310 Parkland Drive, died on February 22, 2000, at his residence after 8 weeks of declining health.
Born January 27, 1929 in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of Claude Lee Carter Sr. and Jessie Gibbs Carter, who both predeceased him.
He was married
to Elizabeth Frances Wyatt Carter on June 30, 1951, who survives.
Mr. Carter had lived most of his life in Danville where he had worked for Blackwell Motor Company in the parts department until his retirement in 1993. He served with the U.S. Army in the Philippines as sergeant with the Military Police.
In addition to his wife of the residence, he is survived by two sons, Victor Alan Carter of Blairs, Va., Baron Lee Carter of Danville; two sisters, Ernestine C. Adkins of Danville, Thelma C. Turner of Roanoke; and one granddaughter, Amanda Elizabeth Carter.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Hubert Carter, Frank Carter and Jack Carter.
A graveside service will be held 11 a.m. Thursday in Highland Burial Park with the Rev. Lee Ellison officiating.
The family received friends Wednesday night, from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel.
The family will receive friends at the residence of his son Baron Lee Carter, 201 Evergreen Place, Danville.

VIRGILINA, Va. - Catherine Seamster Comer, 56, of 5223 Virgilina Road, died Tuesday, Feb. 22, 2000, at the home of her son.
She was born June 26, 1943, in Halifax County.
She was employed with Burlington Industries, and was a member of the Church of God of Prophecy on Hwy. 360.
Survivors include three sons, Timothy Wayne Powell of Roxboro, N.C., Michael Dale Powell of South Boston, and Collie Alton Powell Jr. of Richmond; one brother, Ira Seamster Jr. of South Boston, and seven grandchildren.
A funeral will be 2 p.m. Friday at Brooks Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Tommy Robertson officiating. Interment
will be at Clover cemetery.
