Grace Owen

ORMOND BEACH, Fla. - Grace Hall Owen, 88, of Silks Oaks Drive, died Sunday, Feb. 27, 2000.
She was born in Atlanta.
She was married to Clyde Owen, who predeceased her. She had been a resident of Ormond Beach for 38 years. She enjoyed traveling, sewing, gardening and playing bridge.
Survivors include one son, Roby Tumlin of Doraville, Ga.; one sister, Mabry H. King of Fleetwood, N.C.; three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 11, at North Peninsula Baptist Church, Ormond Beach, with Bob Moorehead officiating.
Woodward Funeral Home, Ormond Beach, is in charge of arrangements.

John Swanson

DANVILLE, Va. - John Addison Swanson, 74, of 230 Broad St., died Sunday, Feb. 27, 2000, at the residence.
Born May, 5, 1925, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of Thomas and Sarah Witcher Swanson.
He was a brick mason and a member of Macedonia Baptist Church.
Survivors include three sons, Raymond Swanson, Freddie Swanson and Eric Swanson, all of Penn Grove, N.J.; two daughters, Terry Swanson and Barbara Jean Swanson, both of Penn Grove, N.J.; and two sisters, Arlene Jones and Mary Jones, both of Danville.
A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Oak Hill cemetery with the Rev. Jesse Swann officiating.
The remains may be viewed from 1-8 p.m. Wednesday at L.H. Brooks and Bros. Funeral Home. At other times, the family will be at the residence.

Gertrude Oakes Bane

SOUTH BOSTON, Va. - Gertrude Oakes Bane, 86, of 4106 Rodgers Chapel Road, Clover, Va., died March 1, 2000, at the Woodview Nursing Home.
Born Jan. 13, 1914 in Chatham, she was the daughter of Joseph Green Oakes and Mary Elizabeth Woodson Oakes. She was married to Ira Aubrey Bane Sr. She was a member of the Rodgers Chapel Baptist Church.
Survivors include two sons, Warren Bane of South Boston and Aubrey Bane Jr. of Sutherlin; one daughter, Elizabeth Saunders of Petersburg; one sister, Ruby Hammock of Danville; three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday from the Rodgers Chapel Church cemetery with the Rev. Doug Spurlock officiating.
The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 p.m. at Powell Funeral Home and at other times at the residence of her son, Warren Bane, 2148 Cherry Hill Road, South Boston.

Isabelle Chitwood Bowles

ROCKY MOUNT, Va. -Isabelle Chitwood Bowles, 89, of Rocky Mount, died Feb. 29, 2000, at her home.
She was the daughter of William Henry Chitwood and Alice Hubbard Chitwood. She was married to Thomas D. Bowles, who predeceased her.
Survivors include one daughter, Barbara France of Penhook; three sons, Charles Bowles of Chatham, James Bowles of Penhook, Tommy Bowles of Los Lunas, N.M.; four brothers, Ulis Chitwood of Rocky Mount, Coleman Chitwood of New Castle, Del., Oliver Chitwood, and Clifton Chitwood, both of Conway, S.C.; three sisters, Peggy Turman and Edith Perdue, both of Rocky Mount and Madeline Brown of Salem; and four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at the Flora Funeral Chapel with the Rev. B. Glenn Voss officiating. Interment icon will follow in Franklin Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. Thursday at Flora Funeral Service, Rocky Mount.

Edna Cooke

CHATHAM, Va. - Edna Odella Jefferson Cooke, 86, of 10753 Anderson Mill Road, died Wednesday, March 1, 2000, at the Gretna Health Care Center.
Born Sept. 22, 1913 in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Johnny Coleman Jefferson and Ida Wade Jefferson. She was married to Clarence Cooke, who predeceased her. She was a member of Museville Christian Church and was retired from Dan River Mills.
She was predeceased by three brothers, O.C. Jefferson, Kenneth Jefferson and David Jefferson.
Survivors include two sons, C.D. Cooke and Kenneth Douglas Cooke both of Chatham; three sisters, Octavia J. Oakes and Janet J. Lawrence, both of Chatham, and Gladys J. Bailey of Richmond; four grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.
A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Friday from the Museville Christian Church with the Ministers Randal Johnson and Ted Clifton and the Rev. Joseph Glass officiating. Interment icon will be in the Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends from 7-8 p.m. Thursday at Scott Funeral Home and at other times at the residence.
Scott Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Ethel Hodges

DANVILLE, Va. - Ethel Scott Hodges, 71, of 180 Lamberth Drive, Lot 15, died Wednesday March 1, 2000, at Danville Regional Medical Center, after several years of declining health.
Born March 15, 1928, in Danville, she was the daughter of David Luther Scott and Bessie Jo Lipford Scott. She was married to Harold Clyde Hodges, who predeceased her. She spent most of her life in Danville where she worked for Dan River Inc., and was later employed in home health care. She was a member of St. John's United Methodist Church.
Survivors include one son, Clyde Scott Pruitt of Danville; two sisters, Gertrude Scearce and Geneva Harville, both of Danville; one granddaughter and three step-grandchildren.
A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Floral Hills Memory Gardens with the Rev. Steve W. Greer officiating.
The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 p.m. Thursday at Swicegood Funeral Home and at other times at the residence.

Ruth Farmer Johnson

GRETNA, Va. - Ruth Farmer Johnson age 79 of 3082 Blue Ridge Dr. Gretna died Wednesday March 1, 2000 in Virginia Baptist Hospital.
Born July 4, 1920 in Pittsylvania County she was a daughter of the late Tom Farmer and Lucy Owen Farmer. She was also predeceased by one brother and one sister, Oliver Farmer and Doris Yeatts. She was a member of Midway Baptist Church. Mrs. Johnson was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother. She was married to the late Nelson Silas Johnson.
Survivors include four sons and daughters in law, Kenneth and Dawn Johnson, of Windsor, Aaron and Emma Johnson, Tommy and Jo Ann Johnson both of Gretna, Dennis and Sallie Johnson of Lynchburg; 7 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren and 1 step-great-grandchild.
Funeral services will be conducted 2:00 p.m. Friday at Midway Baptist Church by the Rev. Dr. Lynn Marstin. Interment icon will follow in Gretna Burial Park.
The family will receive friends 7 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday evening at Colbert-Moran Funeral Home and other times at the residence 3082 Blue Ridge Dr., Gretna.
In lieu of flowers the family suggests memorial contributions be made to the Midway Baptist Church building fund 2136 Midway Rd., Gretna, Va. 24557.

Bernyce Pinchback Oliver

DANVILLE, Va. - Bernyce Pinchback Oliver, 89, of 138 Pearl St., died Feb. 28, 2000 at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born March 5, 1910 in Danville, she was the daughter of Jerry Pinchback and Emma Henderson Pinchback. She was married to Fletcher Oliver, who predeceased her. Prior to her retirement, she was employed at Dan River Mills. She was a member of Trinity Baptist Church.
Survivors include two daughters, Gwendolyn O. Reid of Winston-Salem, N.C., Lavetrice Oliver of Danville; two sons, Fletcher Oliver Jr. of Danville, Jerry A. Oliver of Tacoma Park, Md.; two sisters, Juanita L. Drake and Ada P. Lee, both of Danville; two brothers, Warner Pinchback and Charles Pinchback, both of Danville; and several grandchildren.
A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at Trinity Baptist Church with the Rev. Brandon Smith officiating. Interment icon will follow in Floral Hills Memory Garden.
The family will receive friends at the residence.

Isabelle Stowe Compton

DRY FORK, Va. - Isabelle Stowe Compton, 73, of 231 S. Ridge St., Apt 312, Heritage Towers, died Thursday, March 2, 2000, at her residence.
Born Jan. 26, 1927, in Dry Fork, she was the daughter of Lessie Shelton Stowe and Irvin Dodd Stowe, who survives.
She was married to Curtis G. Compton, who predeceased her. She was a homemaker and a charter member of the Calvary Church of the Nazarene.
In addition to her father, she is survived by two sons, Theron "Bernie" Compton, Marlon Y. Compton, both of Danville; two daughters, Melody C. Murphy of Pelham, N.C., Deborah C. Collins of Providence, N.C.; two brothers, Doug Stowe of Dry Fork, I.D. Stowe of Danville; one sister, Ann S. Sigmon of Danville; six grandchildren, and one great-grandchild.
In addition to her mother and husband, she was predeceased by one brother, Wellons Stowe.
A funeral will be held 2 p.m. Saturday from Barker Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Ron Graham and the Rev. Rick Withrow officiating. Interment icon will follow in Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 p.m. Friday at Barker Funeral Home Chapel, and at other times at the residence of her son Marlon Compton, 102 Cedarwood Lane.

Lorene Craft

CHATHAM, Va. - Lorene Jacobs Craft, 72, of 5768 Climax Road, died Thursday, March 2, 2000, in Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Dec. 30, 1927 in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of the late Ollie Jacobs and Elsie Chism Jacobs, who survives. She was married to William Henry Craft, who predeceased her. She was a member of New Bethel Church of the Brethen, and she was a homemaker.
In addition her husband, she was predeceased by two sons, David Craft and Marshall Turner Craft.
In addition to her mother, she is survived by one daughter, Janet Craft of Chatham; a son, Wesley Craft of Hurt, Va.; two sisters, Charlotte Pierce and Dot Jacobs, both of Gretna, and one brother, Haywood Jacobs of Gretna.
A funeral will be held 11 a.m. Saturday at New Bethel Church of the Brethren with Dr. Alvery Parr, Curtis English and Minister Rudy Hearn officiating. Interment icon will follow in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 p.m. Friday at Colbert-Moran Funeral Home and at other times at the residence of her daughter Janet Craft, 880 Piney Road, Chatham.
Colbert-Moran Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Eugene Drew

DANVILLE, Va. - Eugene William Drew, 82, of 438 Jeanette Drive, died Thursday, March 2, 2000, at his residence.
Born Nov. 29, 1917 in Chemung Co., N.Y., he was the son of Ray Drew and Ethel Wood Drew. He was married to Violet Aherron Drew, who survives.
He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II and a member of Mosley Memorial United Methodist Church. He was a land surveyor.
In addition to his wife of the residence, he is survived by one son, Bill Drew of Merritt Island, Fla.; one daughter, Susan Drew Barnard of Dayton, Ohio; four grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.
A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday with the Rev. Woodrow Giles and the Rev. Daryl Joyce officiating. Interment icon will be in Highland Burial Park with military graveside honors given by American Legion Post No. 325.
The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 p.m. Saturday at Townes Funeral Home and at other times at the residence.
